00:00The problem is that some of these moves that are logical and you may call them positional,
00:07they're expected by your opponent.
00:10And if you want to change the nature of the game, if you want to make it sharper,
00:15if you want to create something that's less comfortable for your opponent,
00:21then you move on with the moves that are not perfect by pure chess standards.
00:30One of the greatest experts on such moves was the second world champion, Emmanuel Lasker,
00:36who always believed that chess was a fight.
00:39It was all about winning.
00:41It's all about playing an opponent.
00:44And moves, except those moves that were winning instantly
00:49or the moves that were very obvious, like in the opening,
00:52but in a normal game, in the middle of the game,
00:56the choice that you make should be based exclusively on making your opponent less comfortable,
01:05guaranteeing that the type of the position that you're playing is something your opponent doesn't expect,
01:10doesn't feel comfortable of playing with.
01:13And Lasker was the world champion for 27 years,
01:19and one of the reasons of his longevity on the top of the world of chess
01:24was his ability to adjust his own play to the psychological deficiencies of his opponents.
01:35Sometimes you can probably play against your own instincts
01:40to make an opponent even less comfortable.
01:44But when I say against your own instincts,
01:48we're talking about very strong players.
01:51Because if I say I'm not comfortable playing positional endgame
01:55or a quiet position,
01:57that means I'm not as comfortable as Karpow or Kramnik.
02:00Thank you very much.
