00:00If you can't find Buckner, what then?
00:06You gonna stop them when they ride in?
00:12Well, don't feel too bad about it.
00:14Maybe your town isn't that important.
00:17Towns like this all die out sooner or later.
00:21They don't leave too many mourners.
00:24Few leaning headboards to prove that men were here long enough to die.
00:27A few rotting walls left standing.
00:35I guess it really isn't worth dying for.
00:57These are some of the hundreds of thousands of cattle that were driven up the dusty trail from Texas to the Kansas railheads in the 1870s.
01:08The trip was hard on men and beef alike, so the drive sometimes stopped a while in southern Kansas, where the water was free and the grass green.
01:16They had some pretty good poker games in those towns along the way, and Kiowa City was one of them.
01:21A town made prosperous by the trail drives, a prosperity they weren't always happy with.
01:26The trail hands felt they were cheated in the stores and saloons.
01:29The townspeople felt that the cowhens were a bunch of savages.
01:33I don't know about that, but they weren't very good poker players.
01:37Well, boys.
01:48See ya.
01:48How many of them kings you sneak off the bottom of that deck?
02:07You know, friend, a man can lose more than his money with talk like that.
02:11I'll say it again.
02:14You deal crooked.
02:20I'm gonna kill you, Mr. Tin Horn.
02:31Thanks, Marshal.
02:32You just saved a life.
02:34I'm not sure just who.
02:37I'm a great believer in peace and quiet.
02:40I think I'll go to bed.
02:41Before some of his Texas friends decide to pick up the argument.
02:46Come on, boys.
02:46Give me a hand here.
02:54The only difference between day and night on Trail Street is that the nights are just a little noisier.
03:00Not much noisier.
03:02But this morning it was quiet.
03:04Too quiet.
03:11Maverick.
03:11You better keep in off the streets.

05:55town's paying me to see they don't
06:00anyway
06:02if I run I can't come back
06:05Marso's wages are pretty poor pay for getting killed
06:11I knew what I was getting into when I took the job
06:15you better get out before the music starts
06:18if I hadn't grown those three kings
06:23none of this would be happening
06:25do you think I can help Walt
06:28I said you couldn't
06:29if I can keep this just one man
06:32against one man I'll have a chance
06:34the two of us would be asking for a shootout
06:37you better go out there with this
06:46Wade sees a shotgun he might decide to parley instead of shoot
06:50keep one eye on Red Scanlon
07:04I still say they're not paying you enough
07:07you'd better get off the street Mr. Buckner

13:41I'm not saying it's right
13:42I'm not saying it's right
13:43I'm not saying it's right
13:44Let's go.
14:14Mr. Wade?
14:15Yes?
14:18I'm Walt Hardy's wife.
14:21Go home, Mrs. Hardy.
14:23If you'll just listen to me a minute.
14:25My husband didn't mean to hurt that boy.
14:28He just hit him a little too hard, but he didn't mean it.
14:31Walt's not a mean man.
14:34He's kind.
14:36Mr. Wade, don't hurt my husband.
14:40Get her away from here.
14:41If you and Walt would just sit down together, maybe have a drink or something, just talk it over like folks.
14:50That's all, Mr. Wade.
14:52If you'll just talk together.
14:54Try to understand.
14:55No, Mr. Wade.
15:07No, no.
15:10You're a young man.
15:12You don't want to live with us the rest of your life.
15:15Here, take care of her.
15:16No, stop him.
15:20Somebody stop him.
15:22No.
15:24No.
15:24All right, Hardy.
15:44Come on out.
15:45What's on your mind, Jack?
16:04You killed one of my boys.
16:09Get him, Red.
16:10That does it.
16:30Let's go get a drink.
16:31You feeling hostile?
16:42You always have somebody do you killing for you, Wade?
16:45This Maverick's a real gambler.
16:47Likes to push his luck.
16:48Shut up, Red.
16:49I wasn't afraid of Hardy, if that's what you're getting at.
16:52Then why didn't you give him a chance?
16:54Because he didn't have one coming.
16:56He didn't give my trailhead a chance.
16:57Your boys feel pretty good again now, huh?
17:02That's right.
17:04Now, stay out of my way.
17:08I'll ask you again.
17:10You buying in?
17:12You'll know if I do.
17:13Oh?
17:14How?
17:15I'll never turn my back to you.
17:24You saw it.
17:25This was murder.
17:27Cold, deliberate murder.
17:31Well, what are you going to do about it?
17:33There's not much this town can do, Mr. Buckner.
17:36Most of the people in this town don't even own a gun.
17:39Those that do don't know how to use one.
17:42If anyone tries to do anything,
17:44it just means more people kill, like Walt was.
17:48Is that all this means to any of you?
17:50Can you see a man murdered in cold blood and forget it?
17:53Simmer down, George.
17:54There ain't nothing we can do.
17:58Well, I'll do something.
18:00I'll make Jack Wade's name a byword for cowardice.
18:03I'll label him a back-shooting assassin
18:05and make Kansas so hot for him,
18:07he'll never again drive a herd up here from Texas.
18:08You do that, George, and you're as good as dead.
18:12The marshal fell mortally wounded
18:23without a chance to return a shot.
18:26The assassins then adjourned to the idle hour saloon
18:29where they drank several glasses of whiskey
18:32before riding out to their camp on Kiowa Flats.
18:37Set that up on a broadside and get it circulated.
18:39You're buying yourself a lot of grief, George.
18:43I'll handle the grief as it comes.
18:45For a second, though, you do a side of loafing red.
19:01I'm thinking.
19:03Good water, good grass hereabouts.
19:06Wouldn't hurt none to lay the herd over another day.
19:09That ain't what's on your mind.
19:11Ain't it?
19:12You're looking for more killing, more trouble.
19:14No, sir.
19:16I just don't like to leave grass fires smoldering behind me.
19:19There's to be no more trouble in Kiowa City.
19:25You're the boss.
19:26Put somebody to load that chuck wagon and let's roll.
19:28Can't till Harry gets back from town.
19:30Send him in for some flour.
19:31Ha-ha!
19:48Ha-ha!
19:52Ha-ha!
19:53Son, where'd you get this?
20:11Mr. Buckner gave me two bits to deliver them.
20:13Said to give one to every man I saw.
20:16Did you read this?
20:17I told you to look out for Buckner.
20:20He's a rabbit, but he brays like a Rocky Mountain canary.
20:23Loud enough to bring down the roof.
20:25Well, it probably can't be stopped now, but at least it can be avoided.
20:29Where are you going?
20:31Well, I'm gonna pack my things and ride out before Wade and his outfit ride in.
20:35You're out of scared of him.
20:37Me?
20:38Scared of Wade and 50 well-armed trailhands?
20:42Perish the thought.
20:43Shortly before nine o'clock, Jack Wade emerged from Lil's hotel.
20:54A heart-rending scene ensued as Mrs. Hardy pleaded with him for the life of her husband.
20:59That's pretty strong stuff.
21:04Brutally ignoring the cries of the distressed woman, Wade and his hired gunman, Red Scanlon,
21:08proceeded to the town jail, where Wade called to Marshal Hardy to come out.
21:11As Hardy appeared, Wade engaged him in conversation.
21:15Then Scanlon opened fire.
21:20The Marshal fell mortally wounded without a chance to return a shot.
21:23The assassins?
21:26Who put this out?
21:27I don't know. A kid gave it to me.
21:29That's pretty rough medicine.
21:30You know what Whiskey Jack would do if he was still alive?
21:33We might pull out of this.
21:34That whole town would be up a tree before he was through with it.
21:37Towns like this have been cheating and belittling our kind ever since the first trail drive.
21:40They'd take our money and hate us for every dime.
21:44Your poor never forgive them for that.
21:46I said leave my old man out of this.
21:50Tell the boys to saddle up. We're riding him to town.
21:59You run off 50 or 60 more of those broadsides,
22:02I'm going to take them up to the Capitol with me and spread them around the state offices.
22:05We want to talk to you, Mr. Buckner.
22:09Not now, gentlemen.
22:11I'm packing to leave on the coach for Topeka.
22:12Raise the devil and now you're flying to hide in church.
22:15What do you mean?
22:16Did you ever see a town getting treed, Buckner?
22:18Treed?
22:19Ripped to bits.
22:20Looting, burning, tearing everything to flinters.
22:22That's what's going to happen here in Kiowa if Wade rides in.
22:25Then I hope he does ride in.
22:27Blast your eyes.
22:28Perhaps then you'll take up arms to defend your property
22:30when you wouldn't move to save a man's life.
22:32If Wade and his trail tramps do wreck Kiowa,
22:35it'll be because you gentlemen are too cowardly to defend it.
22:39Good day.
22:42Regular game cock, ain't he?
22:44What's he going to Topeka for?
22:46Rouse up the governor against Wade.
22:49Hasn't he done enough rousing for one day?
22:50Okay.
22:58Gone someplace, Maverick?
23:21Considering to.
23:23You've been considering wrong.
23:25No one rides out.
23:26Well, what if one does?
23:30You're liable to meet with an accident.
23:33Well, like the bear said to the trap,
23:35I'll stay because of my foot.
23:38How far do you have to be pushed before you get mad?
23:41Pretty far.
23:43But why are you pushing so hard?
23:46I don't like the way you wear your head.
23:48It's too high and your neck's too stiff.
23:51I just don't like you, Maverick.
23:53I see you're wearing your gun.
23:59Just in case I run across a snake.
24:10Yes, sir.
24:11There's nothing like a good wet down before you drag your herd, Mr. Wade.
24:15Got a long, dry spell ahead.
24:17Man has to get a little liquor in just to face the idea of chousing them cows up the trail.
24:25Best liquor in the house, Mr. Wade.
24:27Save it for my best customers.
24:29All right.
24:30Everything's fine.
24:35Who wrote this, Gus?
24:36It's none of my doing, Mr. Wade.
24:39Well, drink up, boys.
24:41Everything's on the house.
24:41I ask you, who wrote this?
24:45Mr. Wade, I tell you, I didn't.
24:47Who wrote it?
24:49I swear I don't know, Mr. Wade.
24:56Gus, are you trying to pause in me?
24:59Why, Mr. Wade, I...
25:01See if that tastes like drinking liquor to you.
25:08Tastes like sheep dip, if you ask me.
25:11You fixing to bust up my place?
25:22All right, boys.
25:24Wait a minute.
25:25Hold it.
25:27Gus just remembered something, didn't you, Gus?
25:30His name's Buckner.
25:32Runs the print shop.
25:33Where will we find him?
25:36He's going out on the night coach.
25:38Going to the governor about how he's being killed.
25:40All right, boys.
25:47Bust it up.
25:48Please, boys.
25:49Don't bust it.
25:49Don't bust it.
25:50Oh, shit.
26:00See you.
26:00I don't want to.
26:01Where's Buckner?
26:27Mr. Buckner ain't here.
26:28Don't fool me. Where is he?
26:32He left town.
26:34He ain't had time to leave town.
26:38Make him talk.
26:52Come on, come on.
26:53What good is it gonna do for you to keep quiet?
26:55Where did Buckner go?
26:58He's passed out.
27:13He's dead.
27:14Shouldn't have hit him so hard.
27:16Let's go.
27:17Let's go.
27:18Let's go.
27:19Let's go.
27:20Let's go.
27:21Let's go.
27:22Let's go.
27:28Let's go.
27:36Let's go.

28:44why couldn't you have stopped to think for a second before you sounded off with this
28:56the man who shouts brave and loud and then runs when he gets answered
29:01that man makes me sick
29:04what are you going to do i don't know
29:08how to turn you over to wait before your fool antics get some more people killed
29:12you haven't any right to do that let go
29:16anyone but you maverick you haven't any right to turn me over
29:20what do you mean we're two of a kind you and i we both let our friends be killed
29:25we were both afraid maverick and you know it
29:28get away from me you can't condemn me maverick
29:32not without condemning yourself
29:34maverick that's far enough
29:42don't get proddy you've been drinking tiger milk
29:46shut up red where's buckner
29:48how would i know
29:50don't lie to me
29:52i don't think i heard you right
29:54maybe you can hear me better
29:56red you're not fast enough or good enough to hit me from where you're standing
29:59and try to get any closer and i'll kill you
30:01that's a gambler's bluff
30:03it might be
30:05hold it
30:06let me try him wade
30:07i said hold it
30:08you're siding with the wrong people
30:11i'm a fence straddler wade i don't side with anybody
30:15i just like to be left alone
30:16see that you don't slip off of that fence onto the wrong side
30:20spread the word around
30:22if buckner gets out of kiowa
30:24i'm gonna take this town apart
30:27you tell folks that
30:29i'm gonna tree this town like no town ever got treed before
30:33you tell them if i don't have buckner in my hands by nine o'clock tonight
30:38i'm taking the town
30:40i knew he was gonna wreck me
30:57that's why i told him about buckner
30:59tried to save my property that's all
31:01just tried to keep him getting busted
31:04but he went ahead anyhow and busted
31:06busted it good
31:07well you did your best to save it
31:11wasn't worth it
31:16nothing's worth feeling the way i do now
31:19feeling brave
31:21some
31:23don't get too brave
31:25i'm telling you i'm through being scared by men like wade and scanlon
31:29it's not a good way to feel
31:30are you afraid of him
31:33i should be so i guess i am
31:37you let wade push you around
31:39did i
31:39he pushed you around like he pushed the rest of us
31:43he stood out there and dared you to do something about walt hardy
31:47that's pushing
31:48a man's a fool to call a hand when he knows his beat
31:52that's one of the rules of my business
31:54just what is your business
31:56staying alive
31:58enjoying good food
31:59an untroubled mind
32:01and a good digestion
32:02is that all
32:04when my brother and i left home
32:07my pappy said
32:08if either one of you comes back with a medal
32:11i'll beat you to death
32:13cousin
32:14you sure turned the devil loose when you told about buckner
32:18now we can't find him nowhere
32:20what do you plan to do if you find him
32:23why
32:25turn him over to wade
32:27only thing we can do now
32:30it's either that or the whole town goes
32:32you shouldn't have ripped that about wade
32:34he had no right to do that
32:36not if he runs after
32:37if you can't find buckner what then
32:40you gonna stop him when they ride in
32:43well don't feel too bad about it
32:49maybe your town isn't that important
32:51towns like this all die off sooner or later
32:55they don't leave too many mourners
32:58a few leaning headboards
33:01to prove that men were here long enough to die
33:03a few rotting walls left standing
33:06i guess it really isn't worth dying for
33:11any side
33:22nope
33:23threw a brace of men on each of the rows
33:25and put the rest of the outfit
33:26work in the washers
33:27where a man might try to sneak through
33:28that buckner
33:30he's either got jackrabbit blood
33:32and he's halfway to topeka
33:33or else he ain't left town
33:34and i don't think he has
33:36but declare i can almost smell him
33:38if he's in there we'll root him out
33:40if we don't i'll turn the hands loose
33:42you reckon those people will fight
33:44maybe
33:45that ought to make her a real hoedown
33:47might be somebody to get killed
33:48i'm short-handed as it is
33:50trail hands come cheap
33:51when do we start the ball
33:53i gave him until nine o'clock to turn up buckner
33:55we'll wait till then
33:56how'd you get in here
34:11in the back way
34:12well you just skin out the same way
34:15did anyone see you come up here
34:20no i don't think so
34:22you don't think so
34:23you got your own neck in a noose
34:26now you're trying to fit mine in it
34:27and you don't think so
34:29there wasn't any place to go
34:32come back here
34:38it'll be dark soon
34:43you're gonna leave then
34:44go on sit down
34:46you can't blame me for attacking jack wade the way i did
34:57he murdered a man
34:59i can blame you for doing it
35:00when you knew you didn't have the backbone
35:01to take the consequences
35:02mr maverick i believe in the law
35:05the law says
35:06there isn't any law out here
35:07except what a man can make and enforce for himself
35:09it can't last long
35:11but that's the way it is for now
35:13jack wade's been living by his own rules all his life
35:16he's got enough horses in his remuted amount of regiment
35:2040 or 50 men who treat him like king of the mountain
35:22if you're gonna talk to a man like that about laws
35:26you better be ready to back it up
35:28what will he do to me
35:30kill you
35:32well what did you expect
35:37i thought the men in this town would stand behind what i did
35:40it just doesn't seem right
35:54to let an innocent like you get killed
35:56where are you going
35:59to see if i can make a deal
36:00a deal what kind of a deal
36:02i don't know
36:02i'll think of something
36:03i hope
36:04what have you told wade
36:06that i promised to get out another broadside
36:08taking back what i said in the first one
36:10if you told him i promised i wouldn't go to see the governor
36:12is that what you want me to do
36:15do you think he'd just forget the whole thing then
36:17if i did that
36:18i don't know
36:19i doubt it
36:20but i'll try
36:21you can't stay here
36:24as soon as it gets dark you better leave
36:25where will i go
36:27i don't know
36:28but this is going to be one of the first places they look
36:30and if you get killed anyway
36:33try not to mention my name
36:36just about 7 30
36:50hour and a half to go
36:51wade
36:52we'd like a word with you
36:54that's far enough
36:56just keep your hands in sight
36:58say your piece
37:01like to make a deal
37:03i'm listening
37:04we want to know your intentions for mr buckner
37:07well some of the boys in favor of shooting
37:12red here is in favor of roping and dragging him
37:15me
37:16i ain't made up my mind
37:18mr wade
37:20i'd like to see this thing settled without no bloodshed
37:24why mr somers
37:26so would i
37:27but that printer wrote some hard things about me in my hands
37:30mighty hard
37:31and what's more he printed them
37:33now what do you think that my boys are going to think of me
37:36if i just turn the other cheek
37:38mr wade
37:39my boys have got to work off steam one way or another mr somers
37:42i'd say the best thing you could do would be to turn up buckner
37:46save a heap of trouble
37:48what if buckner promised to print another broadside
37:51take back all his nasty lies
37:53and tell the town what
37:54really nice gentlemen you and your boys are
37:57i said we wanted buckner
37:58when we get him we'll ride out
38:01he'll promise not to go to see the governor too
38:03let buckner tell us that
38:05and you got one hour and a half to get him here
38:08i want to hear it from you wade
38:10will you take our deal
38:13just don't reckon i can
38:20sorry
38:22i hope they don't
38:30don't what
38:31turn buckner over
38:33i think i'd like taking this town apart
38:36sorry
38:37so
38:40i hope they don't really want to pretend that we just talked about it
38:43that's a huge thing
38:45i believe you
38:47don't know
38:47and i don't think they're the reasonifying
38:48there's some of those things
38:49i don't know
38:49i don't think they're the key
38:53but if we get the picture
38:54you're the key
38:56i write them
38:58kok白
38:58or
38:59what
39:00i y
39:01you
39:01could
39:02and
39:02see
39:03i
39:03what
39:03i
39:05tell 50
39:05are
39:05Who is it?
39:23George Buckner.
39:26What are you doing here?
39:28Please. I need help. Please.
39:32Come in.
39:35You know, for a man who writes brave, you're pretty meeching.
39:44You should never have written those things you did about Jack, Mr. Buckner.
39:48I know.
39:50It's not just yourself. It's the rest of the town's gonna suffer.
39:54Why can't you be a man, go out there, take what's coming to you?
40:03I guess you ain't much of a man.
40:05I won't be staying long.
40:08Maverick's gone out to make an arrangement with Mr. Wade.
40:11Arrangement?
40:13I agreed to print a retraction.
40:16Kind of an apology.
40:18I said I wouldn't go to see the governor.
40:20And you'll go right on living here?
40:23Why not?
40:24Well, I guess if you have to ask, I can't tell you.
40:29I didn't have to ask.
40:32It don't matter.
40:34Look, I know Jack Wade.
40:36He won't settle for an apology.
40:38He'll get you or he'll tree the town.
40:39Did you ever see a town get treed, Mr. Buckner?
40:48You know, folks back east think cowboys are real romantic-like.
40:51They write books about them that way.
40:53But they ain't like that.
40:54They're dirty, sweaty, smelly.
40:56No, please, you don't...
40:57No, no, you listen to me so you know what they're going to do to this town.
41:00They come off the trail hungry for everything.
41:03That's why trail towns like this have deadlines and town marshals to keep the savages down here where they belong.
41:08But our marshal here is dead.
41:12And no deadline's going to stop Wade and his crew.
41:16Why do you tell me these things?
41:19Just so you'll know what you're costing this town.
41:21You had to be so brave in that paper of yours.
41:24Why ain't you brave now?
41:30I never thought of myself as a coward.
41:34Not until they killed Charlie.
41:35I could have saved him.
41:40All I had to do was open that door and walk in.
41:46Why didn't you?
41:48I heard them beating him.
41:50The sounds.
41:52And I wanted to.
41:54Even then I wanted to.
41:58I...
41:59I just couldn't force myself to open the door.
42:05And I see this little gal just yesterday.
42:09Say howdy to her.
42:10She flips her head at me.
42:11Walks off like I was dirt.
42:16How much longer?
42:17About 45 minutes.
42:18I hope you didn't make that deal with Jack Wade.
42:36Why not, Lil?
42:39Do you think it'll help Buckner?
42:41But it'd keep him alive.
42:42And that's all.
42:43Did you make the deal?
42:44No, Wade refused.
42:50Well.
42:51What are you brave men waiting for now?
42:56Where's Buckner?
42:57Why do you want to know?
42:58So you can turn him over to Jack?
43:00You hiding him, Lil?
43:05He came to me.
43:06I didn't throw him out.
43:14Isn't there a man in this town willing to fight for what's his?
43:19Ain't much we can do, Lil.
43:21You can fight!
43:23Did you ever think of that?
43:25And what about you?
43:27You wear a gun.
43:28Don't you know how to use it?
43:29If I have to.
43:31And you don't figure you have to now, huh?
43:32Lil, you're making that fence I've been straddling pretty uncomfortable.
43:37Well, then why don't you get off it?
43:39Before Jack and his men knock it right out from under you.
43:43I think you've already pushed me off of it.
43:44Just by walking in here now.
43:47Or by hiding Buckner.
43:48I don't know which.
43:53Anyone else here feeling light in the head?
43:58Guess we ain't got much choice.
44:00They're going to come anyway, no matter what we do.
44:03Jed Williams and his brother can help, I suppose, if I put it up to him.
44:07We'd better get word uptown.
44:09Tell the folks not to show no lights.
44:10To keep inside.
44:11How about roping off the streets?
44:13I don't think we have time for that.
44:14We can throw up a barricade.
44:16That might slow him up a bit.
44:17I can tell you one thing.
44:18We maybe will damage him some, but we ain't going to stop him.
44:21And I had to raise a family in this town.
44:23I have to buy money for a5299ickers.
44:25And I've been trying to put them on the train.
44:25And nobody will bring those, you guys.
44:27And the rain for me will be here.
44:27And the rain for you.
44:40Well, I can't do this.
44:42I can't do this.
44:42You know, I can't do this.
44:44It's about that time.
45:02All right, boys, come on.
45:14All right, boys, come on.
45:44All right, boys, come on.
46:14All right, boys, come on.
46:44Your boss is dead, and so Scanlan.
46:47Leave now, and there won't be any more shooting.
46:49Well, what about it?
46:55All right, boys, come on.
47:02All right, boys, come on.
47:09All right, boys, come on.
47:16All right, boys, come on.
47:24All right, boys, come on.
47:31All right, boys, come on.
47:33All right, boys, come on.
47:35All right, boys, come on.
47:42What's the room, gents?
48:06What will it be?
48:08Stir to draw.
48:09All right, boys, come on.
48:11All right, boys, come on.
48:16All right, boys, come on.
48:20All right, boys, come on.
48:24All right, boys, come on.
48:26All right, boys, come on.
48:27All right, boys, come on.
48:31All right, boys, come on.
49:01I'll see you next time.
