Parents involved in a free early learning program which has supported more than 500 families in Perth's southern suburbs over the last decade say it has inspired them to become educators themselves. The parents say their children are entering the classroom with valuable skills from the program, which is aimed at empowering families to be their child's first teacher.

00:00Perth mother Asma was a teacher before she had children and thought she had lost her passion for education.
00:08That kind of fizzled away and I was kind of doubting myself.
00:12Oh, I don't know if I want to go back to teaching.
00:15This changed when she discovered the Home Interaction Program for parents and youngsters, also known as HIPI.
00:21The National Early Education Program supports families through home visits with trained tutors,
00:27offering learning tools with play-based materials.
00:30Just helping parents to do the job that they do best because parents are the first and most important teachers.
00:36But they often don't have the resources, they think what do I need to do, what can I say to help my child.
00:43Some parents like Asma apply to become mentors through the program, preparing them for further employment.
00:50HIPI is a wonderful program, not only for the child but also for the parents.
00:56It builds bridges between communities.
00:59It was the perfect kind of job for me to ease into the workforce and I'm glad I did.
01:06It largely supports families with English as a second language, no or low income or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
01:13Parents are encouraged to maintain their first language with their children.
01:17Since 2014, Communicare says it's delivered the program to more than 540 families in the Perth suburbs of Gosnells and Armidale.
01:27As well as being financially accessible, parent Rissangi says HIPI offers a sense of community.
01:32I was in a student visa so childcare was very expensive so I was looking for paths where I can socialise my child and where I can get some help.
01:44She says her son was ready for activities and interactions at kindy.
01:48When he comes outside, he speaks English and when he's at home he speaks our English language.
01:54That's a beautiful thing because he's getting ready for school.
01:57Empowering parents and children for their early learning journey and strengthening their bond.
