00:00The fact that Bigfoot is a suspect in a missing person's case blows my mind.
00:10A local wilderness expert named Skip Welch had taken the girl up to Ghost Canyon for a Bigfoot adventure.
00:16He returned, but she is still missing.
00:19By all accounts, Teresa was a loving teenage girl with her whole life ahead of her.
00:25And it's sad to me that that was tragically cut short.
00:30I want to know if she actually is gone or if she's still out there.
00:33If you guys are going to go deeper into this, it's going to get weird.
00:38He was able to convince a bunch of these college students to go up to this place, Ghost Canyon, with him.
00:43Everyone we've talked to has told us how weird Ghost Canyon can be.
00:50I see what looks like a white gorilla. They chased us for at least 500 yards.
00:54Do you think Skip had anything to do with Teresa Beer going missing?
00:58I still don't believe my heart of hearts that he came here and killed that girl.
01:03I absolutely do believe Bigfoot is up in that area.
01:06I just don't think he's involved in Teresa's disappearance.
01:09There's no evidence to show that he's attacking anyone.
01:14Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
01:15What'd you find now?
01:16He would shoot drugs and we used to sell meth.
01:18Blind Johnny is not just a user. He's also selling.
01:22He's basically using these girls to get his drugs.
01:26To be drug mules and then potentially selling girls to his friends.
01:31That's a huge statement.
01:32They can't find yourself.
01:32In an empire.
01:33At his time.
01:35Remember that?
01:36It's a도ss.
01:36For many years.
01:37For more information.
01:38To be linked in the nature of whatош grinds on back.
01:38We can't find yourself.
01:39That's a big thing.
01:41We can't find yourself.
01:43We can't find ourselves.
01:43Trust me.
01:43We can find ourselves on the town.
01:45We can't find ourselves ourselves.
01:57This is a memorable.
01:58I'm glad we're finally able to meet with Tammy, because I think she's going to be key to figuring
02:10out just how involved Blind Johnny was in all this. At this point in the investigation, we're
02:16taking a hard look at Blind Johnny. He was Teresa's uncle and guardian back when she vanished in 1987.
02:24Blind Johnny's absolutely dead center in my crosshairs. In my opinion, he's the person we need
02:31to look at the hardest right now. As we were looking through the case files, we came across
02:37some pretty damning statements from Blind Johnny's ex-girlfriend, Tammy Newman, and it's clear based
02:43on what she said that we need to dig quite a bit deeper with her. Yeah, you know, I think meeting
02:48her is probably one of the most pivotal points in this investigation. Maybe he was, you know,
02:55connected in Teresa's disappearance. I think Tammy's going to give us that insight and that background
03:00on who Blind Johnny really was and what he was all about.
03:06What happened to Teresa Beer on June 1st, 1987, it was a unique missing person case. She went missing
03:12up here in the Sierra National Forest. The entire town got caught up in this Bigfoot hysteria. Since
03:20Bigfoot made the headlines on this missing person investigation, my personal opinion, it took away
03:24from the case. This case eats at me because she never had a fair shake at life. She never had a chance
03:32to become the woman she probably could have been. She's a very nice, down-to-earth girl, but she was
03:39bounced around from a lot of places. That complicates a child's life. My goal in this case is
03:47ultimately justice for Teresa Beer. I'm hoping Tammy will be up front with us, tell us how it was.
03:59Finally, we can get some answers on Blind Johnny and maybe the connection to Skip.
04:05I'm truly getting this feeling that we have only scratched the surface, even Blind Johnny
04:13alone.
04:13Right.
04:14Getting a vibe that there is so much more going on.
04:27We're in a older part of town where we will be meeting Tammy.
04:35Put it this way, my cop meter is on high right now.
04:43So my impression of this area, Motel Row, where Blind Johnny and Tammy and Teresa were living
04:49in, it's rough. It's a rough spot.
04:53What was this neighborhood like back in the 80s?
05:02Prostitutes.
05:03Just a lot of drug deals, 24-7.
05:06Is that why they called it Motel Row?
05:08Yeah.
05:11Well, what was the main drug of choice around in this neighborhood during their...
05:15Methamphetamine.
05:16Methamphetamine.
05:16So what was it like living here with Blind Johnny after Teresa disappeared?
05:23It was scary.
05:25Mm-hmm.
05:26I believe that we could all very well be Teresa Muir.
05:31I believe that with my whole heart.
05:36That could have been you.
05:37That could have been me.
05:39Absolutely.
05:40Absolutely.
05:40Absolutely.
05:46We understand that this goes back a long way, and I know it's a lot of pain.
05:52I can see that on your face now.
05:54But I can...
05:55I'm lucky to be alive.
05:57I'm so lucky to be alive.
06:00No, we get it.
06:00Yeah.
06:01You don't understand.
06:03I know what I went through, and I went through a lot of hell.
06:08And there's more.
06:10There's not just me.
06:11Back in 1987, I was a 17-year-old girl, enamored with the drug life.
06:27You were 17, and how old was Blind Johnny at the time?
06:30What was he, 47, 48?
06:32Okay.
06:34He introduced me to drugs.
06:37What kind of drugs?
06:38He had somebody inject it.
06:40Into you?
06:42Okay.
06:46Did you want it at the time, or did he try to manipulate that?
06:49It was manipulate.
06:51It was all to gain control.
06:54When you say manipulate, how did Johnny manipulate you?
06:58I'm just kidding.
06:59What would he do?
07:00By brainwashing us.
07:01Like...
07:01He would brainwash...
07:02Well, there was other girls eventually.
07:05Okay.
07:05He would brainwash us against our parents.
07:08They weren't worried about us.
07:10They didn't care.
07:11Look where we're, you know?
07:12Right, right.
07:12He's taking care of us.
07:14He's paying for our clothes.
07:15He's feeding us.
07:16He's this.
07:17He's that.
07:19I'm your daddy type.
07:21Right, right.
07:22And he would be abusive, and you would stay.
07:25You would stay.
07:30Once you're turned out, and you need the drugs, and nobody cares about you, you can't go home
07:37to your white-collar family because you're a disgrace, what do you do?
07:42You keep feeding your habit any way you can.
07:46So I wanted to ask you about that because it was mentioned that Blind Johnny would have
07:55the girls, like, pack away the drugs, like, pack away the drugs, and then sell them.
07:59Yeah.
08:00John ended up getting us little young girls and having us young girls deliver the drugs
08:05so that, because little girls don't get in trouble.
08:08I think it's absolutely disgusting what he did to these girls.
08:14He manipulated them in such a way that they felt obligated to be around him and depend on
08:20him, and they're still very much upset and traumatized by it.
08:25My mom tried so hard to get him arrested.
08:31He kicked in our door.
08:34He held a gun in front of my mom.
08:36And Johnny was crazy.
08:40Johnny was, he was bad.
08:43He was really bad.
08:46Blind Johnny was a dangerous guy.
08:49I mean, anytime you deal with the world of narcotics, it's dangerous, right?
08:53You don't know who's coming and going out of your house, different people.
08:56I don't know what to make of that and how that coincides with Teresa's disappearance,
09:01but it was sure really strange.
09:03So do you know to what extent Blind Johnny was involved in Teresa's disappearance?
09:09I don't know that he did.
09:16I have no, he never talked about her.
09:19Nobody ever talked about her.
09:22The conversations maybe you've had with Teresa during that time, do you remember her saying
09:27anything that at all?
09:28She never really talked.
09:31She was so quiet.
09:32I would go in and try and make conversation with her.
09:36She was in the bedroom.
09:38She would be making a bologna sandwich or doing whatever he told her to do.
09:43Why did he even take Teresa in in the first place?
09:48For the welfare, for the money.
09:50Oh, gotcha.
09:52She was just a slave as, as, that was it.
09:56Cook the food, do this, get, do, do, do, that's it.
10:00She was scared of him.
10:02Yes.
10:02First of all, I can't even imagine what it would be like to have to live in a situation
10:09like that as a mom.
10:10I don't understand how you could not show love to a family member, especially a child.
10:18Putting yourself in Teresa's shoes, Skip comes over and says, hey, we're going to go see
10:23Bigfoot and you get to get out of this house.
10:27Of course she's leaving.
10:29After Teresa went missing and Johnny and Skip stayed friends, did you ever overhear them
10:38talking about it?
10:39Nothing.
10:40I only met that dude twice and I did not like him.
10:46He was gross.
10:47He had cutoffs on, t-shirt, he was dirty, he was greasy, his hair, he was creepy.
10:59What do you think happened to her when she went up into the mountains with Skip?
11:05I think Skip was supposed to take her to school and Skip talked her into, or he didn't
11:13talk her in, once you're in the car, you're in the car.
11:15And Teresa was not feisty, she was submissive, she was quiet, she was withdrawn.
11:26What were your thoughts when you heard that Skip said that Bigfoot took her?
11:31The son of a bitch killed her.
11:40Nothing came and stole her.
11:42Nobody came and took her.
11:43Bigfoot is not there.
11:45Show me a story where he's carnivorous and goes and kills and devours.
11:51But I ain't never.
11:53But I'm going to tell you like this.
11:55They're both pieces of s***.
11:57S***, John and Skip are s***, plain and simple.
12:06How they got to live out their lives in freedom is beyond me.
12:23What is the deal with Blind Johnny?
12:25Blind Johnny did not care about Teresa at all.
12:29Well, it doesn't sound like anybody really cared about her.
12:34After interviewing Tammy and hearing about the living conditions that Teresa was in,
12:40I mean, it was infuriating.
12:43It is stunning how her uncle, Blind Johnny, failed her.
12:47Just stunning.
12:48If Teresa was going through what she was going through today, they would not give him custody.
12:54She would not be placed with him.
12:55And she would not be in that environment.
12:58Do you think that it was just that she got lost in the system?
13:01No.
13:02I just think that that system at the time was just not as robust.
13:06It's really heartbreaking hearing how Teresa fell through the cracks of the system,
13:12and it actually brings it all back into focus for me.
13:16Teresa was a real person.
13:18She was more than just a headline.
13:20And even though she was surrounded by a lot of dark things,
13:23she really still does deserve justice at the end of the day.
13:26If I had this case and I had this, I'm going to call him a dirtbag,
13:33I would have, you know, looked at him first.
13:36But Fresno had their investigation.
13:38Blind Johnny never got arrested for Teresa disappearing.
13:45The police had plenty of reason to suspect Blind Johnny
13:48had something to do with Teresa's disappearance.
13:51Teresa was last seen leaving Johnny's apartment on June 1st, 1987.
13:55Johnny reported her missing at 9 p.m.,
13:58despite telling her school that she was homesick several hours earlier.
14:02For all these reasons, the police interviewed and investigated Blind Johnny,
14:06but he was never formally charged with any crime.
14:08I think we've got to look at all angles in this.
14:11We received more answers today, but now we're raising more questions.
14:16I just have a feeling that this is going to take a hard left,
14:20and my brain is going to literally implode.
14:25To me, we have to start from the beginning again
14:46and just retrace our steps on all this.
14:49Let's just go over our theories a little bit, right?
14:51Wait, so Blind Johnny, we obviously know that he's a bad guardian.
14:57We found out he's a massive heroin addict.
14:59So is it possible that Teresa knew too much or saw too much
15:03and Blind Johnny just wanted to get rid of her?
15:06I think that's an interesting theory,
15:09but I just think that Blind Johnny was a deadbeat dad,
15:12or guardian, let's say in this case, that took Teresa,
15:14and he didn't care about the kids.
15:17But based on what Tammy told us,
15:19I think Skip is the one we need to be looking at right now.
15:23He took Teresa up there, and the hook was,
15:25I'm going to show you Bigfoot,
15:27I'm going to show you all these neat things,
15:29these weird things.
15:30She was enthralled probably by that stuff.
15:31But do I think Bigfoot actually grabbed her?
15:35I don't buy that.
15:41I don't believe Bigfoot was involved in Teresa's disappearance.
15:46But Skip certainly did.
15:49But what were his intentions
15:51when he took Teresa up to Ghost Canyon?
15:56We know from the police reports that at one point
15:58he was arrested in connection to Teresa's disappearance
16:01on account of child stealing.
16:03However, authorities eventually dropped those charges.
16:07So I want to know,
16:09what did the police think of Skip?
16:11And where was their focus
16:12in the early days of this investigation?
16:14Hey, Jess, check this out.
16:31What you got?
16:32I found something kind of odd in the police report.
16:35The investigators are referencing
16:36an exact campsite location
16:38where Skip claims Teresa was abducted
16:40by Bigfoot or ran off.
16:42Wait, what?
16:43Yeah.
16:44It's a little murky,
16:45but it sounds like Skip actually took authorities
16:47to this campsite at one point.
16:49Uh-huh.
16:49And that caused the police to become suspicious.
16:53According to the police report,
16:55nearly 10 days after Teresa disappeared,
16:57Skip took authorities to a campsite
16:59where he claimed Teresa was abducted
17:02or disappeared from.
17:04The crazy part about it is that
17:06the campsite was over 20 miles away
17:08from Ghost Canyon.
17:09I mean, from my experience,
17:15something isn't adding up.
17:18We need to go to the campsite
17:21where he took investigators to
17:22because I think that's going to give us
17:24a little bit better grasp
17:26on what this case is about.
17:28Ugh, this is just layer cake
17:30after layer cake after layer cake.
17:32I want to know more about this location.
17:37Things do get missed.
17:38You never know.
17:40What was Skip doing?
17:42And what was he thinking?
17:43How far up is this campsite?
17:52From that report,
17:53this is like 27 miles.
17:54I mean, we're out here really remote.
17:57There's nothing.
18:08All right.
18:11There it is.
18:13Let's check this out.
18:14Yeah.
18:15Wow.
18:19Okay.
18:21Look at that.
18:22Look at that.
18:25So where are we exactly?
18:28Looking at the GPS here,
18:29from where we are
18:31to those coordinates of Ghost Canyon,
18:33I mean, that looks
18:35almost like 20 miles north of here.
18:38Oh, okay.
18:39That's far.
18:41All right.
18:42Do you want me to read out
18:42what the Fresno Police Department
18:44says about the campsite?
18:47Yeah.
18:48It says,
18:50upon exiting the vehicle,
18:52immediately,
18:53Welch pointed to the meadow
18:55and stated that this was the area
18:57that he had last seen her in.
18:59Okay.
19:01Meadow.
19:02So next thing in these notes,
19:04it says,
19:04we were approximately 20 to 30 feet
19:07from this small grove of trees
19:09and I observed a blanket
19:11hanging from a tree
19:12within that grove of trees.
19:17Maybe this is it.
19:20I mean,
19:21my first impression
19:22is when I went up to the campsite,
19:24if you can wander off from there,
19:25you can get turned around.
19:26I mean,
19:27it's the mountains.
19:28It's a remote location.
19:29As a law enforcement officer,
19:33you try to get into
19:34the mind of the suspect.
19:36I mean,
19:37you have to.
19:37You have to try to
19:38really place yourself
19:40in that mind frame
19:41on what the suspect's doing
19:43and why.
19:44The answer is always why.
19:46What else does it say on that?
19:47Okay.
19:47So along with the blanket,
19:49there was a plastic bag
19:50and inside the bag,
19:51there was blue sweatpants
19:53and a pair of shorts
19:54that were maroon in color
19:55that stated Fresno High on them.
19:58So next thing in these notes,
20:00it says they found
20:01a cloth beige purse
20:03and the camera
20:03that they found
20:04appeared to be
20:05a Polaroid type of camera
20:06that was immediately
20:08adjacent to the purse.
20:11Also,
20:12we observed
20:12several Polaroid pictures,
20:14probably from that
20:15Polaroid camera
20:15that they had found
20:16that was laid out.
20:17Right.
20:17We observed several pictures
20:18of the countryside
20:19along with a picture
20:21of Welch playing guitar.
20:26That's weird.
20:27Something about this site
20:31smells fishy.
20:34Did Skip actually
20:36take Teresa here
20:37or was he just trying
20:38to throw the authorities
20:39off the trail?
20:40It sounds like,
20:41now that I'm reading
20:42through this whole thing,
20:43like as we go through
20:44and like seeing the area,
20:45it sounds like
20:46it looked set up.
20:48Check this out.
20:50During a period
20:51of the search
20:51in the late afternoon,
20:52I was seated by Welch
20:53on a large rock
20:55and he began to talk
20:56and then he began to cry.
20:59I asked him
21:00if there was something wrong.
21:02He stated that he felt
21:03so sorry for the girl
21:04up on the mountain.
21:06So looking at Ghost Canyon
21:10earlier,
21:11that's more up
21:12in a mountain.
21:13This is not up
21:14in a mountain.
21:14I mean,
21:15we're more down
21:15in a depression.
21:17That's a mountain.
21:21It sounds like Skip
21:22had a lot of guilt
21:23leading investigators
21:25up to that campsite.
21:26But why?
21:28Was he purposely
21:29trying to confuse authorities?
21:31Was he trying
21:32to stage this campsite?
21:35I'm starting
21:35to get a better understanding
21:37of why the police
21:38became suspicious
21:38when Skip brought them here.
21:41I mean,
21:42I don't know
21:42what this could have been,
21:43but you never know.
21:44I can tell you one thing.
21:47I know the truth
21:47is going to come out.
21:56Let's just reassess everything
22:23because, honestly,
22:24it just keeps moving around.
22:30Here's my issue
22:31with Skip up to this point, right?
22:33Skip's too murky.
22:34I have no idea
22:35at this point
22:35what's going on with Skip
22:37because we're hearing
22:37from people like Kenny,
22:40who seems very credible,
22:41that he doesn't think
22:42Skip at all
22:43was a violent man.
22:44And then I've got
22:45other people like Tammy
22:47saying that, you know,
22:49he's a weirdo.
22:52I really think
22:53it's important
22:54that we talk
22:55to a main family member,
22:58you know,
22:58somebody that knows
22:59directly
23:00what type of person
23:01Skip was.
23:03I did find
23:04in these files
23:05Skip's half-brother,
23:07Robin,
23:07he knew that he was
23:09somewhat mentally unstable
23:10in regard to the beliefs
23:11in Bigfoot.
23:13On several occasions,
23:15Skip had pointed out
23:16certain things to him
23:17in regards to Bigfoot,
23:18but that he,
23:20Robin,
23:20was unable to see
23:22the same things
23:22that supposedly Welch
23:23was saying.
23:24Robin's like,
23:25dude,
23:25I'm not seeing anything
23:26that you're talking about.
23:29Any time you can meet
23:30with a direct family member,
23:32I mean,
23:32that speaks volumes.
23:33Let me just give him a ring.
23:34Your call has been
23:43forwarded to voicemail.
23:45The person you're trying
23:45to reach is not available.
23:47Interviewing witnesses
23:48in this case is hard.
23:49To try to get people
23:51after almost 40 years
23:52to come forward
23:52to sit down,
23:54that's really difficult
23:55because they do not
23:56want to open up
23:56that box of pain.
23:57It's a lot of pain
23:58and suffering in this case
23:59for everybody involved.
24:00The one person
24:17that keeps coming up
24:18is his daughter,
24:19Chandra.
24:21That's Kenny's
24:22ex-girlfriend.
24:23She was supposed
24:23to go up with Skip
24:25and Michelle
24:26into the woods
24:26to go squatching
24:27and Skip told her
24:28stay home
24:28at the last second.
24:29Chandra being his daughter,
24:31she's really going to know
24:33what Skip was about.
24:34I mean,
24:35when you hear it
24:35from blood relatives,
24:36I mean,
24:36that's a different picture
24:37right there.
24:38That's a very good point.
24:39And I just feel like
24:40if we can get a hold
24:41of Chandra,
24:42maybe Chandra can give us
24:43maybe the final assessment
24:45on what Skip's personality
24:47actually was.
24:49She grew up with Skip.
24:51It's her father.
24:53If anybody's going to know
24:54what type of person Skip was,
24:56it should be Chandra.
24:57I think it's imperative
24:59to talk to her.
25:02Let me give her a call.
25:05Hold on.
25:09Come on, pick up.
25:18Hello?
25:19Hi, Chandra?
25:21Yes, this is she.
25:22My name's Jessica Chobot.
25:23I'm with Robert Collier.
25:26We're reinvestigating
25:28the Teresa Beer case.
25:31Um, okay.
25:33I'd love for us
25:35to chat with you
25:36and meet with you
25:37so we could maybe
25:39ask you some questions
25:40about Skip.
25:42Um, well, um...
25:45Would you be down
25:46to possibly meet with us?
25:53Okay.
25:54Okay, great.
25:55We'll see you
25:55in just a little bit.
25:57Thanks, Chandra.
25:59Bye.
26:01I'm very curious
26:03to hear what Chandra
26:05has to say
26:06about her dad
26:07and then try
26:09and wade through that
26:10and try to find the truth.
26:31Chandra?
26:31Yes.
26:32Hi.
26:32Hi.
26:33I'm Robert.
26:34Hi, Robert.
26:34How are you?
26:35Good.
26:35Nice to meet you.
26:35Hi, Jessica.
26:36Nice to meet you.
26:37Can we sit down with you?
26:39Thanks.
26:41Obviously, we're here
26:42to reinvestigate
26:44the Teresa Beer case
26:46and your father's name
26:48comes up a lot.
26:49Mm-hmm.
26:49Um, most people think
26:51he had something
26:52to do with her disappearance.
26:53Right.
26:53So I just wanted
26:54to sit down with you
26:55and get your side
26:57of the story,
26:57what your father was like,
26:58and your opinion
26:59on the whole thing.
27:00Yeah, most of all.
27:03This is my dad
27:04right here and my mom.
27:06He was kind of a hippie.
27:08Mm-hmm.
27:08Um, he's a mountain man.
27:10Okay.
27:10He'd been in mountains
27:11ever since I can remember
27:12researching Bigfoot
27:13and was just what he did.
27:15He's a great dad.
27:17He was really loving.
27:18Um, I can remember
27:19a lot of things
27:20that he did with me.
27:21He used to color
27:21with me all the time
27:22and he tucked me in
27:24every night
27:25that I can ever imagine
27:26until I was 12 years old.
27:28You know,
27:28and he was just a great guy.
27:31He had a different
27:32type of personality.
27:33He was kind of quirky.
27:34You know,
27:35he just,
27:35but he was,
27:35he was a good guy.
27:37And this is my family
27:38also right here.
27:40Okay.
27:42That's one heck
27:43of a necklace
27:43that your dad's
27:44sporting there.
27:44He loved my mom
27:47so much
27:47and he,
27:48he did everything he could
27:49to be able to
27:49as good a life
27:50with her
27:50as he possibly could.
27:53And this is my dad
27:54and his mom
27:55and my uncle
27:56and my aunt.
27:57This is in 1962.
27:59No, 1962
27:59there was a fire,
28:01um,
28:02a couple doors down
28:02from where my dad lived
28:03and my dad noticed
28:05the flames and stuff
28:06and the smoke
28:06coming from the house
28:08and there was,
28:09there were six kids
28:09in the house
28:10and he passed through
28:11the window
28:11and jumped through
28:11the window
28:12and he went in there
28:13and he pulled
28:13every single one
28:14of those kids out.
28:15And they were all,
28:16every one of them
28:17died from smoke inhalation.
28:18And then,
28:19then they,
28:20that's the man
28:20that my dad was.
28:21He would do that
28:22for anybody.
28:25To shift gears
28:26into Teresa then,
28:28knowing how dangerous
28:29and your father
28:29knowing how dangerous
28:30it was to go up there,
28:32why did he decide
28:33to take Teresa up there?
28:37She told my dad
28:37what her uncle
28:38John did to her.
28:40Oh, Teresa told you guys
28:41about the abuse
28:42that she was getting
28:43from blind Johnny at home.
28:44Yes, and she wasn't
28:44going back home.
28:47Why wouldn't he just
28:48take Teresa
28:49straight to the police?
28:50I don't know,
28:51but I know that
28:52he was trying to help her.
28:53I think that the only
28:54reason why they were there
28:55was because my dad
28:56was supposed to meet
28:57somebody there.
28:57They were supposed
28:58to take her
28:58to the police department
28:59in whatever county it was,
29:01the county,
29:02one county over or something,
29:03I don't know exactly
29:04because he didn't go
29:04into detail.
29:05Who was this somebody?
29:06I don't know.
29:07I don't know.
29:08They were supposed
29:08to take her to the authorities
29:10when she disappeared.
29:11What was your relationship
29:16with Teresa?
29:17How did you know her?
29:18I didn't know her.
29:18I really didn't.
29:19I met her one time.
29:20It was at my Aunt Mary's house.
29:22This is before she went
29:23to Ghost Canyon.
29:24And I sat down
29:25and I said,
29:26hi.
29:26And she looked like
29:28she had been crying.
29:29Mm-hmm.
29:29And I told her my name,
29:39her daughter.
29:41And she says,
29:41I know.
29:42And I says,
29:43how are you?
29:43Are you OK?
29:44And she says,
29:45no, I'm not OK,
29:45but I'm going to be OK.
29:51Your dad's helping me.
29:52I said, what do you mean?
29:56She says,
29:57he's going to get me
29:58away from here
29:59and we're going to go
29:59get help.
30:00And he's got it worked out
30:02to where I'm going to be
30:02able to get away from here.
30:04And he says,
30:05is that what you want to do?
30:06Are you sure?
30:07And she says, yeah.
30:08She says, this is my friend
30:09and I trust him.
30:14And about that time,
30:15my dad came over
30:16and he says,
30:17come on,
30:18does anybody want to go
30:19look for Bigfoot?
30:20And they left.
30:22Was that also
30:26the last time
30:27you saw her?
30:29Yeah.
30:32Later on,
30:33when the police
30:34were questioning
30:35your dad,
30:35he also then mentioned
30:36that he suspected
30:37Teresa had either run off
30:39or was taken by Bigfoot.
30:40Do you know
30:41why he said that?
30:42Because there's
30:43a lot of Bigfoot up there.
30:44He knows that they're there
30:46because he didn't
30:47know what to say.
30:49This hurt him so bad.
30:50It was so freaked him
30:51out so bad
30:51because she was missing
30:52and he couldn't find her
30:53anywhere.
30:54And all of a sudden,
30:54she's disappeared
30:55off the face of the earth.
30:56I can't imagine.
30:57I just can't imagine.
30:58I know that I would
30:59have been freaked out.
31:01He was not a bad man
31:03at all.
31:04Maybe he was really bad
31:05judgment.
31:07Right.
31:07You know,
31:08but he's not a killer.
31:13Okay, I also want
31:13to tell you guys something.
31:15My dad said
31:16last time he saw Teresa,
31:18he was talking
31:19to two guys
31:19on motorcycles.
31:21That stuck in my mind.
31:23And then they
31:24write down this.
31:30All right,
31:30what's this?
31:31This is about
31:32the speed freak killers.
31:34Okay.
31:37I mean,
31:38they're a famous
31:39group of serial killers.
31:41Yes.
31:42Very dangerous people.
31:43The speed freak killers
31:47on motorcycles?
31:49Yeah.
31:49They're roaming around
31:50on motorcycles.
31:50That's what I understand
31:51them to be, yeah.
31:56And if you read on there,
31:58it says that Teresa Beard
31:59is one of the possible
32:00victims of the speed
32:01freak killers.
32:03Wait, what?
32:06She's listed in this?
32:07Yes.
32:09Yeah, I see it right there.
32:11The speed freak killers.
32:13The San Joaquin County Sheriff
32:15now announcing
32:16a gruesome discovery today
32:18that could be tied
32:19to the speed freak killers.
32:22These two men
32:23were operating
32:23up and down California,
32:25murdering young women.
32:26The speed freak killers,
32:28given that name
32:29because of their
32:29drug-fueled crime spree.
32:32They were eventually
32:33convicted of four murders,
32:35but are suspected
32:36in the deaths
32:37of as many as 70 people.
32:39And they were still active
32:40at the time
32:41Teresa went missing.
32:42There have been numbers
32:43up to 100 bodies
32:44that could be out there still.
32:46So those families
32:47deserve closure.
32:49To add a group
32:50of serial killers
32:51onto our list of suspects
32:53blows my mind.
32:55But Teresa's name
32:56is on this list
32:57for a reason,
32:58and we need
32:59to look into it.
33:00Who put this list together?
33:02Is it this,
33:03the guy right here?
33:04Yes.
33:04Private investigator Rob Dick?
33:05Yes.
33:07Have you contacted him at all
33:09or been in touch with him
33:09or is this all
33:10that you found?
33:11No, I haven't been
33:12in contact with him.
33:13Oh, there she is again.
33:15There was a list
33:16of pictures
33:17of girls' pictures
33:17and it would say
33:19underneath the girls' pictures
33:20it would say
33:20either possible victim
33:22or it would say victim
33:24under each girl's picture.
33:26Okay.
33:26And under Teresa's name
33:27it said possible victim.
33:29Oh, right there.
33:33Okay, these are the
33:34speed freak killers.
33:35This is Shermantine.
33:36Okay.
33:37And this is her target.
33:39Okay.
33:41And they both eventually
33:42ended up in prison.
33:43Yeah, one committed suicide
33:45in prison,
33:46hanging himself.
33:46Do you know
33:47which one's still alive?
33:49This one.
33:49Shermantine, okay.
33:52So based on your investigation
33:54into this
33:55with the speed freak killers,
33:57you're saying
33:57that it is possible
33:58that they were involved
34:00in Teresa's disappearance.
34:01Yes.
34:02That's exactly what I'm saying.
34:03I believe that they are
34:04the ones getting after
34:05and killed her, yes.
34:06Okay, these are the
34:19speed freak killers.
34:19This is Shermantine
34:20and this is her target.
34:22I believe that they are
34:23the ones that kidnapped her
34:24and killed her.
34:26I know my dad didn't do this.
34:27I know my dad
34:28didn't hurt her at all.
34:29I know he was only
34:30trying to help her
34:31and it just went bad somehow.
34:32This was a curveball
34:36that I was not expecting.
34:40We'd have to look more
34:41into this
34:41and interview
34:43the private investigator
34:43that compiled this information.
34:45I mean, it's huge.
34:47I just hope
34:48that we find out
34:50what happened to her.
34:51Yeah.
34:51I don't care
34:52who ends up being guilty.
34:55I just want someone
34:56to find closure for her
34:57because she deserves that.
35:02Chandra had a lot
35:04of good information,
35:05but I want to know more
35:06about this
35:07speed freak killers list.
35:09To my knowledge,
35:09they were working mostly
35:11in Northern California
35:12and I want to know
35:13why Teresa Beer
35:14made this list.
35:27Totally didn't see
35:28that one coming.
35:29Add that to the list
35:31because a pair
35:32of prolific serial killers
35:33was not where I was thinking
35:36this was going to end up.
35:37Me neither.
35:40Could you imagine
35:41finally getting away
35:43from your terrible home life?
35:46Right.
35:47Getting lost in the woods
35:49only to then run into
35:51a set of serial killers?
35:53Right.
35:54Why is Teresa's name
35:55on this
35:57speed freak killers list?
35:59I mean,
35:59that's what we have
36:00to find out.
36:01But you know what?
36:02We don't know enough
36:03about these guys.
36:05So far,
36:06investigators have recovered
36:08400 bone fragments.
36:10Discovering bones.
36:12Human.
36:12Deep in a well
36:13that have been tied
36:14to the speed freak killer case.
36:16Back in 1984,
36:18the speed freak killers
36:19embarked on a drug-fueled
36:21killing spree
36:21that lasted nearly 15 years.
36:25The two buddies
36:25were convicted
36:26of four murders
36:27in San Joaquin County,
36:29but it's believed
36:30they killed a lot more.
36:33Their heinous crimes
36:34struck fear
36:35in the hearts
36:35of people that lived
36:37in the Northern California area
36:38where they were known
36:40to operate.
36:40But could Teresa's disappearance
36:44hundreds of miles
36:45south of their killing area
36:46be the result
36:48of this murderous duo?
36:52To answer that question,
36:54we've tracked down
36:54Rob Dick,
36:56the P.I.
36:57who put Teresa's name
36:58on that list.
36:59Hi, Rob.
37:09Hi, yeah.
37:10Robert.
37:11Oh, nice to meet you.
37:11Nice to meet you.
37:12Rob and Robert.
37:12Hi, Jessica.
37:13Nice to meet you.
37:14Nice to meet you.
37:14Come on in.
37:14All right.
37:15Thanks.
37:16Thanks for having us.
37:20Well, Rob,
37:22we're trying to reinvestigate
37:23the Teresa Beer case,
37:24and while we were
37:25doing our research,
37:26we came across a list
37:27where Teresa's name
37:28shows up as a person
37:30that might have been
37:32a victim
37:32of the Speed Freak killers.
37:34And so we were kind of
37:36wondering if you could
37:38run us through
37:38your theories
37:39as to why you think
37:40she should be included
37:41in that list,
37:42because as far as
37:43we're aware,
37:44they only worked up
37:45in Northern California
37:46and not this far south.
37:48Well, actually,
37:49that's not completely true
37:51because they went
37:51the whole state
37:52of California,
37:53including, actually,
37:55the Western states
37:56all the way over to Utah.
37:57Oh, really?
37:58Yeah.
38:03We know that the timeline
38:04for when they were
38:05actively killing
38:06and Teresa going missing
38:08matches up.
38:09But I guess my question is,
38:10would they have killed
38:11around here?
38:12They went everywhere,
38:13pretty much,
38:13on the west coast.
38:14So it's possible, right?
38:15They could have came
38:16this far south.
38:18I have a California map,
38:19actually, in my office.
38:20It's hand-drawn by
38:21Shermantine
38:22as to their hunting grounds.
38:27Were they just
38:28killing for opportunity?
38:30Were they killing
38:30for pleasure?
38:32It's rumored
38:32that they were hunting
38:34the ultimate sport,
38:35which were human beings.
38:36Just human beings, yeah.
38:41They like back roads.
38:44Yeah, where things
38:45are isolated.
38:46Less witnesses,
38:47less people to see.
38:49These guys were always
38:50camping.
38:51These guys were always
38:52up in the woods.
38:54If they were to come
38:55across her,
38:56I mean,
38:56she would fit
38:57as a perfect victim.
38:59Back when we started
39:01getting victims
39:02that were theirs,
39:03I just compiled a list
39:04of everybody
39:05that could be a potential
39:06just with victimology.
39:08Right.
39:09She fit the profile
39:10for what their MO
39:11for going after somebody
39:13would have been.
39:13100%.
39:14A lone 16-year-old female,
39:19no witnesses,
39:20back roads,
39:21forest.
39:22I mean,
39:22what perfect opportunity
39:23to do it?
39:27Did I see
39:27Teresa's name over here?
39:29Yeah.
39:29I put together
39:30a binder for each victim,
39:32photo,
39:33front and center,
39:34and then just
39:34whatever information,
39:36how many witnesses,
39:38family members
39:39that we might talk to,
39:40things like that.
39:40So I'm curious
39:42in how many victims?
39:44That's the magic question.
39:45Law enforcement
39:46has said
39:46it could be up to 30,
39:48and Wesley laughed at me
39:50and said,
39:50you've got to multiply
39:51that times three.
39:52Really?
39:53Oh, my God.
39:53You know,
39:54and some of their victims
39:54were acquaintances
39:55and lot lizards.
39:57What are lot lizards?
39:59Prostitutes and truck stops
40:00because they're transient,
40:03they come from all over.
40:07They're not in contact
40:08with their family anymore,
40:09usually,
40:09and they're not missed.
40:11They're not missed.
40:11Correct.
40:12Yeah, so you never know.
40:15Interesting.
40:16Well, who were you talking to
40:17that told you
40:18that they were looking
40:18always for lot lizards?
40:20Who was your contact?
40:22Wesley Shermantyne,
40:22which is one of the two.
40:24I built a relationship
40:25with him,
40:26and I've dealt with him
40:27for the last 20 years.
40:29And we're still investigating
40:30their potential victims.
40:33Have you ever talked
40:34to Shermantyne specifically
40:36about the Teresa Beard case?
40:37Yeah, I kind of touched
40:39the surface a little bit.
40:41In fact, I actually
40:41have a recording of it.
40:43Oh, he actually called you?
40:45Yeah.
40:45He calls me all the time,
40:46so I just thought
40:47I'd bring it up
40:48and see where it went.
40:49Wow.
40:49Both sides.
40:50Can we listen?
40:51Can we hear it?
40:52Yeah, I can play.
40:53All right, great.
40:53You have a prepaid call from
41:00an incarcerated individual
41:05at the California State Prison.
41:09Hey, are you busy?
41:11I'm just driving back
41:12to the office now.
41:14I've got to ask you
41:15about that victim.
41:17About 25 miles northeast
41:19of Bass Lake.
41:21Bass Lake.
41:22Yeah, Bass Lake.
41:30The man was evil.
41:33Period.
41:35He was screaming
41:36at everyone to stop
41:37while they were digging up
41:38the yard.
41:38Wow.
41:39He might have buried
41:41a body on your property.
41:43We really do have
41:45a legitimate chance
41:46of maybe solving this.
41:48I could be in the basement
41:50with Teresa.
41:52Holy !
41:53I found bones!
