00:00Welcome to the latest video from the Car Magazine Tuning Blog, where we introduce the Cupra Formant
00:11Mentor. A vehicle that is no longer an unknown quantity on German roads. The Cupra Formant
00:19Mentor, the first independent model of the seat offshoot, has developed into a real box office
00:24since its introduction in 2020. With the revision for 2024, the Pre-Mentor is once again presented
00:32in a fresh guise that has a lot to offer both visually and technically. The most striking
00:39feature of the new Pre-Mentor is the completely redesigned front section. The previously familiar
00:45face has completely disappeared and has been replaced by the brand typical Cupra design.
00:50The headlights are now designed in a triangular shape and house triangular daytime running
00:57lights, which give the vehicle a more dynamic and sporty appearance. The protruding nose of the
01:03vehicle, affectionately called the Shark Nose, further enhances the sporty impression. The
01:09open-air intake in the apron further contributes to the pronounced sportiness of the exterior.
01:14In profile, the design of the Fermentor remains largely unchanged. However, Cupra offers new rim
01:22options in 18 and 19 inches, which further emphasize the sporty appearance. Particularly noteworthy is the
01:30new continuous light strip at the rear, which elegantly showcases the illuminated brand logo.
01:36The taillights are based on the design of the daytime running lights and consist of three triangular light
01:42elements. In addition, the rear bears the lettering Vor Mentor on the side, which gives the vehicle a
01:49striking finish. The interior of the Fermentor receives some high-quality updates as a result of
01:55the facelift. The steering wheel and the dashboard remain essentially unchanged. However, the center console
02:03around the gear shift lever has been redesigned and padded on the sides. The new infotainment screen
02:10with a diagonal of 12.9 inches and the instrument cluster with a screen diagonal of 10.25 inches
02:16ensure modern and user-friendly operation. The often criticized slider for volume control and the air
02:24conditioning control are now illuminated, which makes operation much easier in all lighting conditions.
02:30The Vor Mentor demonstrates its sporty ambitions not only through its exterior design, but also through
02:42the equipment lines offered. Sports seats are standard, and the top models in the VZ equipment range are
02:49available with optional bucket seats with a microfiber cover made from recycled materials.
02:54A new sound system from Sennheiser with 11 speakers and a subwoofer is also optionally available and
03:02delivers an impressive sound experience while driving with an output of 390 watts.
03:09According to SIAT, the Fermentor's trunk offers a volume of between 420 and 450 L, depending on the version.
03:18For the facelift model, there are currently no precise details on the capacity with the rear seats folded down.
03:24A DAZ has already tested the crossover SUV in two different versions, as a plug-in hybrid and as the
03:31new top model. The plug-in hybrid powertrain of the Fermentor represents the latest generation in the
03:38Volkswagen group. A 1.5L turbo petrol engine shares the workload with an electric motor.
03:45According to users' experiences online, this combination works impressively on the first few drives.
03:51In comfort mode, the Fermentor always starts electrically and only switches to the petrol
03:58engine when increased power is required. The transition between the two drive types is seamless,
04:05so that the occupants hardly notice it. However, when overtaking quickly on the motorway,
04:11the combustion engine immediately jumps to high revs, which makes the drive seem a little strained.
04:16In hybrid mode, acceleration and intermediate track are satisfactory. However, anyone driving
04:23fully electric should not expect exceptional acceleration values. However, the performance
04:29is perfectly adequate for everyday mixed traffic in the city, country and motorway.
04:35One minor point of criticism is the wind noise on the motorway, which is particularly noticeable in the
04:41partial load range of the otherwise quiet and refined drive. The handling of the Vormentor is balanced
04:47overall and ideally suited for everyday use. Even in comfort mode, the SUV's steering and chassis remain
04:55precise and direct, while uneven surfaces are reliably cushioned.
05:01In Cupra mode, the dampers stiffen noticeably without restricting ride comfort too much,
05:06which gives the vehicle a sporty touch and further underlines its dynamics.
05:12The steering of the Vormentor is pleasantly precise and not overly sharp in all driving modes,
05:18which enables a comfortable and controlled driving experience.
05:22According to users mentioned online, however, the cornering behavior of the plug-in hybrid is
05:28noticeably influenced by the center of gravity and the additional weight.
05:31Although the body does not rock, the Fenter is not completely immune to longitudinal movements in
05:38any driving mode. Whether this has a noticeable effect in the ADA-AK evasion test will only become
05:45apparent once the vehicle has been tested in a detailed test. The top model of the Vormentor has to
05:52prove its strengths not only on the highway or in the city, but also in more demanding driving situations.
05:58With its 333 horsepower and all-wheel drive, the Cupra almost always offers sufficient traction,
06:05even when driving in a sporty manner. The Vormentor was able to demonstrate its capabilities on a closed,
06:13winding mountain road. In Cupra mode, the drive becomes significantly more dynamic,
06:19which enables powerful acceleration from a standstill.
06:22A sound generator in the interior and the sporty exhaust system ensure an acoustically appealing
06:29driving experience, while the tightly tuned chassis provides a precise feel for the road.
06:36Winding roads present the chassis with demanding challenges, which the Vormentor masters with flying
06:41colors, according to users online. Thanks to the torque splitting on the rear axle,
06:47the power is distributed efficiently to the wheels, which gives the SUV a surprisingly light-footedness.
06:54The vehicle also masters fast changes of direction, crests and compressions with ease.
07:01However, the weight of the Fermentor is particularly noticeable in the steering,
07:05as the vehicle tends to drift to the outside of the bend without targeted steering input.
07:09The brakes offer reliable deceleration and the Vormentor demonstrates dutiful and safe braking
07:17behavior before tight hairpin bends. The steering behavior is impressively good for an SUV in this
07:24class. Despite its sporty genes, the Cupra Formant Mentor remains a long way from being a full-fledged
07:30sports car. This is mainly due to its weight and the tuning designed for everyday suitability,
07:36which prevent it from exploiting its maximum potential on the racetrack.
07:41The Vormentor shows its strengths much more as a vehicle suitable for everyday use with a sporty
07:46character, which is particularly impressive on winding country roads. However, it is not suitable as a
07:52track tool. With the facelift, Cupra is expanding the range of engine options, including petrol, plug-in hybrids
08:00and a diesel. A total of eight different drive variants are available, covering outputs from 150
08:07to 333 horsepower. This wide range makes the Vormentor a versatile option that meets different
08:15driver requirements. The entry-level model is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine,
08:23which transfers 150 horsepower to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.
08:31Cupra also offers a mild hybrid engine with the same output,
08:34which is combined with a dual-clutch transmission and is supported by a 48-volt starter generator.
08:42The small electric motor enables the vehicle to coast and ensures a smoother start of the automatic
08:47start-stop system, which is particularly noticeable at traffic lights. The only diesel in the range,
08:55a 2.0 LTDI, also produces 150 horsepower and uses a DSG dual-clutch transmission for gear selection.
09:03The next larger engine option is a 2LTSI engine, which delivers 244 horsepower.
09:12This engine is only available with a dual-clutch transmission and sends its power to all four
09:16wheels via all-wheel drive. The top models in the series, known by the abbreviation VZ,
09:24an abbreviation for the Spanish word VELOS, which means fast, offer two different power levels.
09:31The front-wheel drive version produces 265 horsepower, while the all-wheel drive version boasts 333 horsepower,
09:39which corresponds to an increase in power of 203 horsepower compared to the V facelift.
09:44Both models are also equipped with a dual-clutch transmission.
09:50Cupra no longer offers a five-cylinder engine in this series. The Cupra Formant Mentor is also
09:56still available as a plug-in hybrid. Cupra uses the latest powertrain from the Volkswagen Group.
10:03The facelift model can now be charged with up to 50 kilowatts using a fast charger.
10:08Up to 11 kilowatts are possible at a home wallbox or a public charging station. A significant improvement
10:15over the pre-facelift, which only offered 3.7 kilowatts of charging power. The battery has a
10:22capacity of 19.7 kilowatts hours and enables an electric range of up to 100 kilometers according to
10:29WLTP measurements. There are two power levels to choose from for the plug-in hybrid, a version with
10:36204 horsepower of system power and a more powerful version with 272 horsepower.
10:44Both drives combine a 1.5L petrol engine with an electric motor to offer balanced performance both
10:50in everyday use and on longer journeys.
