00:00Hello and welcome to the video by CarMagazine TuningBlock on the topic of the Mercedes-AMG C63S
00:11Performance. According to users online who have shared their experiences, the new Mercedes-AMG
00:17C63 SE Performance is a technical masterpiece, but it lacks soul. With its 680hp, which is made
00:26up of a 476hp 2.0L 4-cylinder engine and a 24hp electric motor, it impresses on paper.
00:36But the question arises, what is it good for? Compared to the same period last year, Mercedes-AMG
00:43sold over a quarter fewer cars in the first quarter of this year. Some users suspect that
00:49this is due to the unemotional and less popular 4-cylinder models such as the new C63 SE Performance.
00:56As the famous quote goes, their scientists were so busy wondering if they could, they
01:02didn't think about whether they should.
01:06This statement also seems to apply to the new C63 SE Performance.
01:12The car is equipped with some of the cleverest technology ever installed in a road car.
01:16For example, there's a turbocharger with an integrated motor that helps recover used energy.
01:26It also has a high-performance battery that's calibrated to deliver a boost at any time.
01:33Even the weight distribution of 49-51% is impressive for a sedan.
01:37However, according to online reviews, this C63 commits two serious sins.
01:44First, at 2,185 kg, it's incredibly heavy.
01:49Second, the new engine destroys the character of the car, which was previously so immensely
01:54important to the C63's ethos.
01:57Many wonder, what is the C63 without its V8?
02:00Some users admit that despite all the criticism, the new C63 has its raison d'etre.
02:07With 680 horsepower, it's undoubtedly powerful, but there's still the feeling that it's lost
02:12the spirit of its predecessor.
02:15Instead of the sonorous sound of the V8 engine, there's now a 4-cylinder hybrid, which is
02:20technically impressive but less emotionally evocative.
02:22According to users, the idea for the hybrid 4-cylinder came from the engineers within
02:28AMG and not from the parent company.
02:31They wanted to take the C63 in a new direction and bring Formula 1-inspired technology to a
02:36road car.
02:38However, the implementation of this idea does not seem to have convinced everyone.
02:42The C63 SE Performance makes extensive use of its hybrid system.
02:46Getting 476 horsepower from 2L of displacement involves compromises, especially in terms of
02:53responsiveness and drivability.
02:56To achieve this power, a huge turbocharger is necessary.
03:00And with such a turbocharger comes a correspondingly massive turbo lag.
03:05There are two ways to tackle this problem.
03:08The first would be a relatively high revving engine with high compression, which quickly gets
03:13the turbo up to speed and generates a lot of power.
03:16However, such an engine would be difficult to approve these days.
03:20Or you could do as AMG did with the C63, a low compression ratio of 91, a large turbo and
03:262.5 bars of boost pressure.
03:29Normally, such an engine would be barely drivable.
03:33It would take a long time to get the turbo up to speed, would have little power at low revs
03:38and would deliver abrupt power delivery.
03:40But with 204 horsepower of electric assistance, things suddenly look different.
03:49With an electric motor on the turbo, which revs it up in advance, you could get an engine
03:53that really responds well.
03:56According to users online, the C63 really impresses here.
04:00Mercedes has packed the hybrid system into the rear differential to optimize weight distribution.
04:08The engine itself only has a 48-volt system and no high-performance hybrid technology.
04:14This creates a strange power distribution dance.
04:17The engine transmits the power to all four wheels via the front-mounted new transmission and the
04:23drive shaft.
04:25At the same time, the electric motor sends the power to the front via the same drive shaft
04:29to drive the front wheels if necessary.
04:34Successfully balancing the three main systems of engine, electric motor and turbocharger is
04:38a technical masterpiece.
04:39Some users report that the C63 is the first turbocharged engine that truly responds like
04:46a naturally aspirated engine, with instant, bottom-end thrust and a nice, peaky power curve.
04:53With the initial throttle input, the electric motor delivers nearly maximum power to generate
04:58massive torque.
05:00At the same time, the turbocharger spools up to 0.5 bars in a flash with electric assistance.
05:06At low revs, the electric motor provides the majority of the propulsion until the turbo kicks in.
05:13Then a finely-tuned interaction takes place.
05:16The boost pressure increases to 2.5 bars, while the electric motor continues to deliver power,
05:22so that the power buildup of the combustion engine feels more natural.
05:26The car accelerates like a rocket.
05:30It really is incredibly fast, almost scary when you consider the physics behind it.
05:34But despite its impressive acceleration, there are points of criticism.
05:40At almost 2,200 kg, users say the C63 SE performance is one of the most dynamically capable sports
05:47sedans they have driven in a long time.
05:52However, this trick is easy to decipher, because the good handling comes at a price elsewhere.
05:56The C63's suspension is extremely firm in all situations.
06:04It rumbles and bounces over every bump, never losing its dynamic stability, but demanding
06:09a high level of attention from the driver.
06:13Nevertheless, the car's mechanical balance in slow corners is undeniable.
06:17It digs cleanly into the bend and nicely turns the rear end in the middle of the bend, where
06:24most cars in this weight class would rather push outwards without motivation.
06:29Of course, you can equip almost anything with stiff springs and dampers and it will probably
06:33handle the bend well.
06:34But for many, the C63 is simply too firm to be considered an everyday car.
06:41Especially when compared to competitors such as the BMW M3, the outstandingly sprung Alfa
06:46Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio or the Cadillac CT4 Blackwing.
06:51This clearly shows how heavy the new C63 really is.
06:55This leads many back to the question of why.
06:57Despite its technical superiority and largely impressive performance, some users don't
07:04understand why this car exists the way it does.
07:09The C63 has traded speed and emotion for, well, just speed.
07:15Many can't shake the thought that an 800kg lighter C63 with an 8-cylinder would simply be
07:21better.
07:21Yes, the C63 SE performance is technically impressive and technically better.
07:29But at what price?
07:31Nobody falls in love with a calculator and that's exactly the problem with the C63.
07:38In conclusion, the Mercedes-AMG C63 SE performance is a vehicle that divides opinion.
07:43While some admire the technical masterpiece, others miss the soul and character that its predecessor
07:51with its V8 engine offered.
07:55It remains to be seen how this model will fare in the future and whether it can still win
07:59the hearts of fans.
