00:00A police operation in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro has left at least 132 people dead
00:09in what has become the largest and deadliest gang raid in Rio's history.
00:13The grisly operation saw explosions and gunfire ring out in the Brazilian state
00:18and left neighborhood streets lined with bodies just days before Brazil is set to host a major
00:24upcoming world event.
00:26So what prompted the brutal bloodbath?
00:28Here's everything you need to know.
00:30In the dark of Tuesday morning, October 28th, 2,500 Brazilian civil and military police
00:36entered the Alimau and Peña complexes of Rio de Janeiro, accompanied by helicopters,
00:42armored vehicles, and drones.
00:45The state of Rio de Janeiro launched the raid, which it labeled Operation Containment,
00:50aiming to combat the territorial expansion of the Commando Vermelho, or Red Command,
00:55which is one of the country's largest and oldest criminal groups,
00:59according to think-tank Insight Crime.
01:02The Red Command is notoriously involved in the drug trade in Brazil and South America,
01:07and has a strong foothold in the poorer neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro,
01:11known as favelas.
01:13The group has faced repeated targeted clashes with government troops and local militias in the past,
01:18who have aimed to take the favelas under their control.
01:21According to the government of Rio, the latest raids in Alimau and Peña have been in the works
01:27for over a year.
01:29Police used armored vehicles to topple barricades set by the Red Command,
01:33while also setting blockades of their own to close off strategic avenues and highways in the area.
01:39Shootouts and gunfire soon broke out, and have since left at least 132 dead,
01:44four of whom are confirmed to be police, as well as dozens injured, including civilians.
01:50According to a video posted by the state,
01:52Red Command could be seen responding to the raid by using drones,
01:56which reportedly dropped explosives on police.
01:59Various videos shows the complex is looking like a war zone,
02:03as explosions and rising black smoke scattered across the city skyline.
02:06In the aftermath, over 40 bodies could be seen lining the streets of the Peña favela on Wednesday,
02:13a witness told Reuters.
02:15The UN Human Rights Watch chimed in on the deadly assault, saying,
02:19We are horrified by the ongoing police operation in favelas in Rio de Janeiro.
02:24We remind authorities of their obligations under international human rights law,
02:28and urge prompt and effective investigations.
02:31The harrowing ordeal comes as the state of Rio prepares to host a major climate conference,
02:37to kick off the COP30 World Leaders Summit in Brazil next week.
02:42The government has been known to conduct similar operations ahead of hosting major world events.
02:47In April of 2014, over 2,000 troops entered the favelas of Rio,
02:52to conduct a series of, quote,
02:54pacification efforts, ahead of the country's hosting of the FIFA World Cup.
02:58The state of Rio announced that following its raid on October 28th,
03:02over 80 criminals have been apprehended,
03:05along with over 400 pounds of drugs and dozens of firearms.
