23:44I've just realised I've come dressed as the book

23:54What was it like writing your own life story?
23:56Well yes, my first work of non-fiction
23:59Yes
24:00I found it
24:01I found it really, really very illuminating
24:04I'm not a very reflective person in real life
24:06I don't tend to think about what I'm doing or why I've done it
24:09And so
24:11Looking back over 40 years
24:14This is the first time
24:16I'm standing in my truth
24:18As young people say
24:19I said that to my daughter
24:21She said yes
24:22Because she read a bit of it
24:23She said standing in your truth
24:24I think you're up your neck in it
24:26You have done so much
24:27And you've packed it into this incredible book
24:29It's an amazing account of those early years
24:31Working with some incredible people
24:33Like this photo is amazing
24:35Like the comedy royalty from the UK
24:38All captured in one photo is incredible
24:40What were those days like?
24:42Well that's a photo of a failed sketch show
24:45Called Al Fresco
24:46That was made in 1982
24:49No, but what a funny thing
24:51Because I walked into a room one day
24:53In late 1981
24:54I just started as a shouty mouthy alternative comedian
24:57And Granada TV in Britain
24:59They were trying to put a sketch show together
25:01And they were assembling young talent
25:03None of whom were known or in any way famous whatsoever
25:06We were all like real newbies
25:07And I walked into this room
25:09One moment
25:10And I met Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Robbie Coltrane
25:14All at once
25:15All of whom became lifelong friends
25:17But the first thing we did was make this sketch show together
25:19Which was a complete flop
25:21Seldom
25:22Seldom in the history of television
25:25Has something been less than the sum of its parts
25:27No
25:29Than that one
25:30But yeah, they're all up for
25:31In fact, Dame Emma Thompson now
25:33Yes
25:34In fact, actually out of those photos

26:12When you're working on those shows
26:14Did you have a hint that they were going to be as successful as they ended up being?
26:17Of course we had no idea we were making a hit
26:19But even after we all were lucky enough to actually do really well
26:23You can never plan for a hit
26:25As I've discovered
26:26And it's all in the book
26:28But you just have the only thing you can do
26:32I think in any walk of life
26:34Is to follow Polonius' advice to Hamlet
26:37Above all to thine own self be true
26:39If you write what you think is funny
26:41Then there's a chance other people will think it's funny
26:43If you try and write something that you
26:45You're trying to second
26:46Oh they'll like this
26:47Because somebody else did that last year
26:48So you can't plan a hit
26:50You can't plan a miss
26:51You've just got to do your best
26:52And hope for the best
26:53Well you have done your best
26:54Over an incredible career
26:55Your writing is amazing
26:57Were you ever tempted into acting?
27:00I have been tempted into acting once or twice
27:02Very rarely
