00:00All right.
00:01Yes, it is always better to do this off of a win,
00:04but we'll just have to make do with what we got this time.
00:06We go, as always, through all the different positions.
00:09We start on offense with the quarterback.
00:11I know initially you might look at 15 points.
00:13You look at Mac Jones throwing an interception, only 193 yards.
00:17You might think this was a bad day for Mac Jones.
00:20I didn't think it was all that bad.
00:21I thought Mac performed pretty darn good.
00:24It was elsewhere that let him down,
00:26including his offensive line and his skill position players.
00:29I thought Mac was fine, a B- for Mac Jones in this game for me.
00:33Yeah, that's exactly what I've got him at as well.
00:36B-, I mean, sure, you're in kind of a desperate late-game situation
00:41when he throws his interception.
00:43That is an interception that's on him,
00:45but not all interceptions are built the same.
00:47I wasn't overly offended by it.
00:49Again, he suffered from drops, key drops.
00:53Juwan Jennings, in this particular case, again,
00:56he suffered from poor protection from his offensive line,
00:59and we know his limitations, and apparently he had another lower body injury
01:03that he suffered in this game with kind of a knee bruise.
01:08But the Niners were not able to move the ball.
01:10At no point did I look at it and say,
01:13that's because Mac is making poor throws or poor decisions.
01:17Kosh and Ian did say after the game, he missed some plays.
01:20So I don't think it was a great game,
01:21but I think that's reflected by what we just gave him at B-.
01:23Yeah, I had him in a C+, he was beleaguered, he was under siege.
01:28There were a couple plays where the check down was available and he didn't take it.
01:32A couple of nice scrambles on one bad wheel, maybe two bad wheels,
01:36and a couple of the biggest plays of the game.
01:38The deep shot to Juwan, you leave everyone in to block, beautiful ball.
01:43And the other one to the rookie, was it?
01:46Jordan Watkins.
01:47Jordan Watkins, thank you.
01:49Jordan Watkins.
01:49High throw had to be, and it went right through his hands.
01:52So those were plays that he made, they didn't.
01:55So I gave him a C+.
01:56All right, up next is skill positions.
01:58That's wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs.
02:01It was not much from any of those groups.
02:04George Kittle had an awesome touchdown catch.
02:06Jake Tondris on National Tight End Day also got in on the action.
02:09Other than that, a lot of negatives.
02:11There was the drops that you're talking about,
02:13one by Juwan, one by Jordan Watkins.
02:15There was the really bad Juwan Jennings face mask penalty
02:18that took away a 13-yard Mack Jones scramble.
02:21You got nothing from Christian McCaffrey.
02:23Not that that's necessarily his fault.
02:25Probably more to do with the offensive line and game script.
02:28But you really got nothing from your skill positions
02:30other than that one great George Kittle catch.
02:33A D for skill positions from me.
02:35C- and a lot of the demerits of what you pointed out.
02:38Christian McCaffrey had a couple plays where he made something out of nothing.
02:44The Kittle catch was fantastic.
02:46The Tondris grab as well.
02:48And also, the Juwan Jennings catch at the goal line.
02:51I think that was on third down.
02:53It was third and very long.
02:55Third and 17.
02:56He goes up among two.
02:57That was a great catch.
02:58And he fought for it.
02:59He took a lick.
03:00And that eventually led to the Tondris touchdown.
03:03So, some positives.
03:04I was a little bit more gentle and gave him a C-.
03:06I did, too.
03:07I don't want to go.
03:09To me, Ds and Fs are like,
03:10if you're leading the charge for why they lost.
03:14And for me, I think you lost this game in the trenches.
03:17So, we'll get to that with the offensive and defensive line.
03:21But two drops are two drops.
03:24Some key plays that need to be made.
03:26I just don't know what the real opportunities were
03:29for the skill position players for the most part in this game.
03:33I'd have given them a higher grade if they did more with the opportunities they had.
03:36They didn't, but I don't see them as the main problem.
03:40So, C- for me.
03:41Well, let's get to the main problem.
03:43The offensive line.
03:45I have a little bit of, you know, I feel firm a bit
03:48because you're down two starters
03:49and you're going up against a great defensive unit.
03:52Will Anderson is one of the toughest guys to block in the NFL.
03:55But when you consider the Niners only ran the ball eight times,
03:58there were two other Mac Jones scrambles.
04:00Those were not called runs,
04:02but eight called runs that stood in this game.
04:05And the fact that Mac Jones had no time to throw
04:08almost every time that he dropped back,
04:11I thought it was a disastrous game.
04:12I can't give an F because it's an offensive line unit
04:15that is young and inexperienced for the most part
04:18going up against a great unit, but a D-.
04:20They were terrible.
04:21Yeah, I went with a D for a lot of the same reasons.
04:25I don't think necessarily this group is as awful
04:28as we're making it out to be this week
04:31considering I think that's the best defense in football,
04:34number one, and number two, yes, missing two of their five starters.
04:38But then the rest is the rest.
04:41You know, you have those ends with Anderson
04:44really kind of leading the way with Texans.
04:46They had a day, and McKibbitz got really, really beat,
04:50and we're waiting for Dominic Pune to get healthy
04:52and look a little bit better, and he's not.
04:55And they completely abandoned the run game
04:57because they just couldn't move the ball with it.
04:59So I can't do anything better than a D.
05:00It's a D for me as well, and I'm just looking at some of the notes,
05:04and in the opening possession, you come out with illegal formation.
05:08You've got Hennessy gets beat, McKibbitz gets beat,
05:11third quarter McKibbitz gets beat, back-to-back plays.
05:14Part of it is on coaching.
05:15We'll get to that later.
05:16But they had a really hard time getting anything going on the ground.
05:20You guys mentioned it.
05:21They had to abandon it, and Mack was just getting pummeled back there.
05:25So I gave him a D.
05:26Over to the defensive side of the football, the front seven.
05:29That's the down linemen and the linebackers.
05:32This is an incredibly young Niners unit,
05:35and they had more injuries in the game.
05:37So I feel for them in that regard.
05:39But you're also going up against one of the worst,
05:41if not the worst, offensive line in the NFL.
05:44And they made C.J. Stroud look like a good quarterback.
05:47And I think he still is a good quarterback,
05:48but the point is he's looked terrible all season long
05:51because of that offensive line.
05:53The Niners' defensive line and the linebacking crew
05:55did not get to C.J. Stroud at all.
05:58I thought they were absolutely terrible in this game as well.
06:01A D-minus for the front seven for me.
06:02D-minus, yeah.
06:03And you can throw in 118 yards on the ground for Marks and Chubbs.
06:07Stroud with a couple of scrambles.
06:08But you really hit on it, Grandy.
06:1030 for 39, C.J. Stroud.
06:13And I think you end up hitting him twice.
06:16And even the interception you got was more of just a case of him throwing it
06:21because the half was going to end.
06:22It wasn't because he was under immense pressure.
06:24And it's got to get better.
06:26The trade today, Keyon White added.
06:28Hopefully that will get you a little bit more pressure.
06:31But I was really disappointed with that total effort.
06:34They almost had 500 yards of total offense against you.
06:37It's a D-minus.
06:38I'd like to have compassion.
06:40I get that they're young.
06:42I get that there were more injuries.
06:45I understand.
06:46I understand.
06:47That was an F.
06:48That was an F.
06:52Which stands for bleeping F.
06:55Okay?
06:55That, I've said it all week.
06:57It's the worst offensive line in football, and they look like a brick wall this time around.
07:01I don't care who you are, but you've got to find your way to C.J. Stroud.
07:06You have got to make tackles when Nick Chubb and Woody Marks, not stars, are in front of you.
07:12They did next to nothing.
07:14I can count how many plays that group made.
07:18Like, actual plays.
07:20I can count them with zero fingers.
07:22So, for me, it's a total F.
07:24Up next is the secondary.
07:25This is where I gave my worst grade of the day.
07:28And I know that defense is a team game, and the defensive line and how quickly they can get pressure on a quarterback is going to impact how well a secondary can play.
07:38But when you consider the Texans are down their three top receivers that they, you know, if everyone was healthy in this game, they don't have Christian Kirk.
07:48They don't have Nico Collins.
07:49They don't have Tank Dell, who's still recovering from a really, really rough injury from last year.
07:55And you got beat to the tune of C.J. Stroud throwing for 318 yards and two touchdowns.
08:00You did have an interception to stop that streak, but also D'Almodo Lenore didn't get out of bounds or didn't get down in time, whatever.
08:07And that's still largely a healthy secondary group for the Niners.
08:11You don't really have any absences there currently right now.
08:14And they did that versus that Texans pass offense versus those wide receivers.
08:20I thought it was terrible.
08:21An F for me from the secondary.
08:22I went D on this one only because I'm a firm believer that the Niners do their defense from the front to back.
08:29In other words, you got to be able to rush the passer to give the secondary a chance.
08:34And if you just let any quarterback sit back there and pick you apart, that's exactly what he's going to do.
08:40So that's kind of where my compassion went, along with the fact that even though it was a stupid interception that shouldn't count, it was an interception.
08:48It's the first one they've had since, like, I don't know, the Obama administration or something like that.
08:53So whatever it was, I gave them a couple points for that and ended up on a D.
08:58D-plus for me.
08:59They got to pick.
09:00They got to pick.
09:02It's the most worthless pick you could ever have.
09:05And I don't know if he should have gotten out.
09:07I think that's a big ask for him to, like, be able to count it down.
09:11If you look deep in the weeds, as I do, opening possession, third and one, Jair Brown, tackle for loss, forces a field goal.
09:19There were a couple of those plays where the secondary actually rose up and made an important play.
09:24But I'm looking at my notes, Noel goes for 45 yards, Mustafa beat.
09:30Brown had that blitz and he just missed.
09:33You had Mustafa fell down on one.
09:36It was a disaster, but they got to pick.
09:38It's a D-plus.
09:39Come on.
09:40Up next is special teams.
09:41I had a hard time with this grade because I didn't really think special teams did a whole lot because they didn't have a lot of opportunities.
09:49Eddie Pinero did not kick a field goal in this game, made just one extra point.
09:54That was it.
09:55Now, the punts were good.
09:56And honestly, the field position game, it favored the Niners.
09:59The kickoff return by Brian Robinson was one of the big reasons why they scored their first points just before the half.
10:05So they were definitely good.
10:07I don't think they had enough opportunities to be great.
10:10A B-plus on special teams.
10:12A-minus.
10:13A-minus.
10:14A-minus.
10:15The opening possession.
10:16You go three and out.
10:17You punt it and they're backed up to the six.
10:20You mentioned the kick return.
10:21That led to a touchdown.
10:22And Pinero kicked and made what he had to make.
10:26And you know what?
10:26Sky Moore ran away from a few balls inside the 10.
10:29It's an A-minus.
10:30I'm going A.
10:32I'm going A.
10:33Because, like, granted, you said it, like they didn't have an opportunity to be great.
10:37But what do you have in life?
10:38You can only do what you have an opportunity to do.
10:41And the special teams did what we asked them to do every single opportunity they got.
10:46So it's not their fault.
10:47It's kind of like having a really easy schedule but then winning all of the games.
10:51So, okay, fine.
10:52I'll give you an A.
10:53And last but not least, it is coaching.
10:56Not a good performance by the Niners coaching staff.
11:00I don't know how much you want to include Robert Sala in this.
11:02Obviously, he's been amazing so far this year.
11:05I thought some of the way that they defended on third downs was questionable.
11:09The amount of space they gave to Texans receivers on third and fours, third and fives, led to easy conversions.
11:15The game plan offensively, I know it kind of gets hijacked when the opposing team goes on a 10-play drive.
11:21And suddenly, you're behind double digits.
11:23And you've held the ball for like three minutes in the entire first half.
11:27I know that it's hard.
11:28But you've got to find a way to get the ball to your studs more often.
11:31Christian McCaffrey, only 11 total touches.
11:33That's unacceptable.
11:34A D coaching for me.
11:35I just did not like it from the beginning.
11:37Yeah, I get it.
11:38I go C-.
11:39It's hard for me when I see certain things like on the very first play of the game, you walk out there and have an illegal shift or illegal motion or whatever to a degree that has to go on coaching.
11:50I think it's more of a player mistake.
11:52But bottom line is, I don't know what kind of opportunities they really had to run the game plan they want.
11:58But that's partially on them.
12:00The guys came out flat.
12:01They're super short on having the horses.
12:03But, as Kyle put it, the guys who are out there have to play as well as they can.
12:09They did not C- for me.
12:11C- didn't love all the play calling.
12:13And Robert Sala's blitzes were so predictable.
12:16Third down, oh, now we're going to blitz.
12:19And they still didn't get home.
12:20That's not necessarily on the coaching.
12:22But, by and large, when your team comes out flat, that's a reflection in large part on the coaching.
12:28So, I also gave them a C-.
12:30All right, and that's Randy's grades.
12:31Go Randy's grades.
12:31Hopefully it's better next week.
12:32Every Tuesday.
12:33Well, yeah, it better be.
12:34A lot of red pen on that sheet.
