00:00White has resigned because this bishop is overloaded.
00:05It's a deadly pin, an absolute pin, because the king is here,
00:09and rook cannot be protected.
00:11So white has to take on e4, and then rook takes on e2,
00:15and white position collapses.
00:17And if you take on d2, then after e d2,
00:20it's an amazing situation where white rook is dominated
00:24because it cannot stop this pawn from promoting,
00:27and the bishop, which technically controls the square, it's pinned.
00:32So that's why bishop will be eliminated, and the promotion is inevitable.
00:36So, simple, but very effective.
00:39Bishop e4, and white is lost.
00:50And now it's time for test, for challenge.
00:54This time, it comes from my own game.
00:58The game I played against Vasily Ivanchuk, another Linares tournament.
01:03Not my best Linares, actually Karpov's best Linares, 1994.
01:07But I played a few nice games, and this is one of them.
01:10Look at this complicated, crazy position.
01:13It was a really crazy opening.
01:15Ivanchuk came up with a novelty in the Phoenix variation.
01:18But I managed to find sort of a good antidote.
01:23And Ivanchuk's attack on H-File was not as effective as my build-up against his king.
01:35But still, everything looks quite uncertain.
01:38And it's very important for white to find the right move
01:44to make sure that the game is turned in his favor.
01:50Can you find it?
01:52Pause.
01:53Try.
01:54Try.
02:15Try.
