00:00Milwaukee Brewers' second base Bryce Turang explains why he refused to take one for the team in loss to Dodgers.
00:08If the Milwaukee Brewers failed to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series and reach the World Series,
00:15then second baseman Bryce Turang might have a moment that will haunt him for life.
00:20Turang, a former first-round pick, came to the plate with two outs against the Dodgers, losing 2-1 with the bases loaded.
00:27Facing a 1-2 count against Blake Trinan, he had a chance to tie or win the game for the Brewers.
00:33However, with a chance to tie the game, Turang instinctively avoided a pitch that was about to hit him instead of taking one for the team.
00:41One pitch later, he struck out.
00:43Afterward, Turang explained his surprising reaction.
00:47Naturally, the brain alerts the body to avoid harmful objects.
00:51While many athletes overcome this reaction, Turang hasn't.
00:54His instincts took over against the Dodgers, missing an opportunity to tie the game by getting hit.
01:01Well, if you see me look in the dugout, I'm thinking,
01:03Damn, Turang said.
01:05I know it. Everybody knows it.
01:08I couldn't tell you why I did it.
01:10I just got out of the way. That's just how it is.
01:13Unfortunately, it didn't dawn on Turang until too late that he should have just dealt with the pain of getting hit by the pitch.
01:19You turn your leg. You wear it, he said.
01:22Just like a natural reaction to get out of the way.
01:25The last pitch, he's a big sinker guy.
01:27He threw a four-seamer up at the top. That's just what it is.
01:30You move on. As much as it sucks, you move on.
01:33Rather than crucify his platinum-glove second baseman,
01:37Brewers manager Pat Murphy attempted to provide some perspective.
01:40When the ball is coming towards you, your natural thing, it's a breaking ball.
01:45Your natural thing is to do that, Murphy said.
01:48And I know he was thinking the same thing after the ball passed.
01:51It happens. He'll learn from that situation.
01:53But it's hard.
01:54Even if you try to maneuver yourself, it's hard to get hit by the pitch because it's so reactionary.
02:00You can understand why Murphy wouldn't throw his player under the bus, especially not publicly.
02:04But in a series where the margins are so slim, Tarang's self-preservation instincts could prove immensely costly.
