00:03:48People use the term
00:03:50Is space becoming a warfighting domain
00:03:53And my answer to that is
00:03:56The first time a human being went into space
00:03:59It became a warfighting domain
00:04:00Human beings don't know how to behave

00:08:22This is the deepest, darkest days of the Cold War
00:08:27And Russia was our dreaded enemy
00:08:30And now here they had launched this satellite
00:08:33And it could have a bomb in it
00:08:35And everybody is fearful about that
00:08:37Sir, what do you think about this achievement of the Russians?
00:08:41It's frightening
00:08:41We should find out what they're doing that we're not doing
00:08:45At 7 minutes past 1 this morning
00:08:50A man went around the world
00:08:53The spaceship was built in Russia
00:08:56The name of the man, Yuri Alexievich Gagarin
00:09:00Khrushchev greeted the hero saying
00:09:04Now let the capitalist countries try to catch up
00:09:07We were embarrassed by them on world stage
00:09:12Because our failures were so public
00:09:16They were running away with it
00:09:18They were running away with it
00:09:19The world's first woman astronaut
00:09:22Valentina Tereshkova
00:09:24The American public were clamoring
00:09:31You know, you've got to beat the Russians
00:09:33The exploration of space will go ahead
00:09:39Whether we join in it or not
00:09:42And no nation
00:09:44Which expects to be the leader of other nations
00:09:48Can expect to stay behind
00:09:50In this race for space
00:09:52We mean to be a part of it
00:09:57We mean to lead it
00:09:58Liftoff, we have a liftoff
00:10:0232 minutes past the hour
00:10:04Liftoff on Apollo 11
00:10:06As a kid, I soaked up this patriotism
00:10:16You know, we wanted nothing but evil to befall communism
00:10:20And we wanted America to be first
00:10:22It's still amazing when you think about it
00:10:2712 years after Sputnik
00:10:29We had men on the moon
00:10:31It is said that 500 million people gathered at TV sets around the world
00:10:45To wait for the first earthling to set foot on the moon
00:10:47Never before had so many people
00:10:51Been attuned to one event at one time
00:10:53You're a go for landing, over
00:10:55I do understand, go for landing
00:10:56Picking up some dust
00:11:01Three feet, two and a half down
00:11:04Four forward
00:11:06Four forward, drift into the right a little
00:11:08I believe they're setting up the flag now
00:11:18You can see the stars and stripes
00:11:20On the limit
00:11:21Beautiful, just beautiful
00:11:24Neil and Buzz
00:11:27The President of the United States
00:11:30Would like to say a few words to you, over
00:11:32That would be an honor
00:11:35For every American, this has to be the proudest thing of our lives
00:11:40For one priceless moment
00:11:43In the whole history of man
00:11:46All the people on this earth are truly one
00:11:50There was no black people doing that
00:12:15So that wasn't our world
00:12:19But we knew that we had friends
00:12:25Who were going to Vietnam
00:12:28And they didn't come back
00:12:29We understood war
00:12:32Not only that
00:12:40In 69, we're still segregated out here
00:12:44Lake City was a typical small town
00:12:50In South Carolina
00:12:51We knew our place
00:12:53As black people
00:12:55Growing up
00:12:58During the 60s
00:12:59It felt normal
00:13:00Because that's the way it was
00:13:02We had our own
00:13:08Black schools by law
00:13:10You had white water fountains
00:13:16And you had colored water fountains
00:13:19And we thought there was always something special
00:13:23About the white water fountain
00:13:24Because why do we have two?
00:13:27Is that water better than our water?
00:13:30Some of us got the courage
00:13:32I was one of them
00:13:33I would look around
00:13:34And I would go and take a sip
00:13:36It was just water
00:13:38The house that we lived in
00:13:42For most of our young lives
00:13:45It was quite dilapidated
00:13:46And Ron and I lived in the same bedroom
00:13:49Slept in the same bed
00:13:51My brother Eric slept in the same bedroom
00:13:54On a fold-down couch
00:13:55We fought like dogs all the time
00:13:59Like brothers would
00:14:00That's Ron
00:14:03And that's my dad
00:14:05And that's me
00:14:06And I still got that body in here somewhere
00:14:08The only connection we had with space
00:14:12Was Star Trek
00:14:13That was it
00:14:13We saw ourselves there
00:14:16There was one person in particular
00:14:18Lieutenant Uhura
00:14:19Take over navigation
00:14:20From the first time
00:14:23That we saw her on screen
00:14:24We were absolutely smitten
00:14:26Oh, she just took our hearts
00:14:31We've never seen a black woman on television
00:14:35That not only was a black woman
00:14:38But she was an officer
00:14:40For what I understand
00:14:41Fourth in command of a starship
00:14:43So that told us
00:14:46That there is a possibility
00:14:48For us to have a future
00:14:49In space
00:14:51And I think Ron and I both saw that
00:14:53Though Ron took it a little more serious
00:14:56A lot more serious than many of us
00:14:57Flying in space was a fantasy
00:15:00That everybody had
00:15:01Most kids wanted to see themselves
00:15:03Fooling around on the moon
00:15:04And doing the type of things
00:15:06You saw on TV
00:15:07And so did I
00:15:08But it was only a fantasy
00:15:10He went to MIT
00:15:13To earn a PhD in physics
00:15:15And he did that
00:15:17By the time he was 26
00:15:18However, there were some challenges
00:15:25Between him and space
00:15:27How's he gonna get there?
00:15:31First of all, most astronauts were military
00:15:34They're all pilots
00:15:36They all were white men
00:15:39Just a minor detail
00:15:42The probability of him becoming an astronaut
00:15:46It wasn't there
00:15:47It wasn't there
00:15:48Now you don't really have to be an astronaut
00:15:50Have a billion dollars
00:15:51They'll get you in space somehow, right?
00:15:54Right
00:15:54So that was not an option
00:15:56Is the orbiter ready to be rolled out?
00:16:07Yes, sir
00:16:07The orbiter is ready
00:16:09As we witness today
00:16:19The rollout of the space shuttle
00:16:22We are on the verge of a new era
00:16:24Not only in space flight
00:16:26But in the lives of men
00:16:28And women and children
00:16:30All across this earth
00:16:31The space shuttle is designed to carry satellites and scientists
00:16:42Into and out of orbit
00:16:44For the next several decades
00:16:45It's as large as a medium-sized airliner
00:16:49And designed to be used over and over again
00:16:52Like an airliner
00:16:53The key word is reusability
00:16:55To lower the cost of space flight
00:16:57The space agency has begun accepting applications
00:17:01For would-be astronauts
00:17:02Who want to take part in the space shuttle program
00:17:04And the agency says
00:17:06It is committed to give women
00:17:08And members of minority groups
00:17:09A chance to participate
00:17:11Each candidate will undergo a week of interviews
00:17:13Psychological tests
00:17:15And medical exams
00:17:16Twenty will be selected as pilots
00:17:18Twenty will be chosen as mission specialists
00:17:20Crew members who perform scientific
00:17:22And medical experiments in space
00:17:24This was the first selection
00:17:28That they didn't require you to be a pilot
00:17:30Now they were going to take scientists
00:17:33Because space shuttle was going to be
00:17:34A vehicle to do science with
00:17:36I was also told the plan at that time
00:17:38Was to go to Mars
00:17:39And they needed physicians on board
00:17:42What better physician than an emergency physician
00:17:44I mean, come on, we're the guys
00:17:46We were so stoked
00:17:49I mean, that's all we could think about
00:17:52From that moment
00:17:53Tell me about meeting Bill
00:17:56Um, so I was a third year medical student
00:18:00Uh, he was a year ahead of me
00:18:03We became interested in each other
00:18:06And then, um, we lived together
00:18:09Got engaged and got married
00:18:11What was it that you liked about Bill?
00:18:13Well, one of the first things we talked about
00:18:16Was space
00:18:17He'd wanted to be an astronaut
00:18:19Since he was six years old
00:18:21This is from, um
00:18:23I think it's October 1952
00:18:27And the teacher says
00:18:29When we can keep Billy down to Earth
00:18:32And not let his mind wander
00:18:34To the clouds and rockets
00:18:35He is so much more willing to do his best
00:18:38So my mother writes back
00:18:40We have the same problem at home
00:18:44He is still extremely rocket conscious
00:18:47Yeah, I was very rocket conscious
00:18:50You bet
00:18:50And, uh, still am
00:18:52Rocket conscious
00:18:54That's the way to be
00:18:54You know, it was neat
00:18:57I just felt incredibly lucky
00:18:58That I met someone
00:19:00Who felt the same way I did
00:19:02About everything
00:19:03I really believe that space exploration
00:19:07Is, uh, man's ultimate destiny
00:19:10And I think the next new frontier is space
00:19:12And I want to be part of that pioneering effort
00:19:14Basically, at the time I was growing up
00:19:19Your options were to be a nurse
00:19:21A teacher
00:19:23Or a secretary
00:19:25And none of those interested me
00:19:34Roger, liftoff and the clock is starting
00:19:38Freedom 7 is go
00:19:41It was really Alan Shepard's flight
00:19:44That motivated me
00:19:46He was the first American to go into space
00:19:50Oxygen go
00:19:52All systems are go
00:19:54What a beautiful view
00:19:58So, at that moment
00:20:01I decided I wanted to be an astronaut
00:20:03But I never told anybody
00:20:05Because I was afraid people would laugh at me
00:20:08Here it is
00:20:10Medicine seemed to me like
00:20:12The best potential option
00:20:14Because in the back of my mind
00:20:17And I thought
00:20:17And maybe if I don't get to be an astronaut
00:20:19I could be a doctor on a space station
00:20:22But that building concrete's hard
00:20:24Harder than my head is
00:20:26You're gonna hurt a bit, okay?
00:20:29Ron gave me a call one day
00:20:31And he said
00:20:32Hey, man
00:20:34I don't know if I should tell you this
00:20:37But I'm gonna be an astronaut
00:20:40So I'm looking at the phone
00:20:43I said
00:20:43You're gonna be a what?
00:20:45What makes you think you're gonna be an astronaut?
00:20:48And he said
00:20:49Because I applied
00:20:51I said
00:20:52Well, how many people applied?
00:20:53He said
00:20:55I don't know
00:20:56Nine, ten thousand
00:20:57I said
00:20:58Well, how many astronauts
00:21:00Are they looking for?
00:21:02They're looking for 35
00:21:03At this time
00:21:05I knew my brother had lost it
00:21:07I'm thinking
00:21:09Well, I'm gonna be the Pope
00:21:10So, I mean
00:21:11So, I mean
00:21:13So, we can play this all day
00:21:16You know
00:21:17The National Aeronautics and Space Administration
00:21:20Today chose the 35 persons
00:21:23Who arrived the space shuttle
00:21:24Into orbit
00:21:25And back in the 1980s
00:21:27Among the women selected
00:21:29Four are single
00:21:30Two are married
00:21:30One with three children
00:21:32I'm just hoping that I can do
00:21:34A good job
00:21:35And repay the confidence
00:21:37That NASA
00:21:37And all of these other people
00:21:39Have in me
00:21:40Another of the new astronauts
00:21:42Is Dr. Ronald McNair
00:21:43It wasn't until recently
00:21:44That I saw a break
00:21:46To make a dream
00:21:46You know
00:21:47Come true
00:21:47I rushed through the phone
00:21:49I said
00:21:50Congratulations, man
00:21:51You did it
00:21:52He actually did it
00:21:56I mean, could this be happening
00:21:58He's about to take
00:22:00His own Starship Enterprise
00:22:01Into space
00:22:04One of the six women
00:22:06Chosen as astronauts
00:22:07Is a medical doctor
00:22:08Anna Fisher learned
00:22:10Of her appointment
00:22:10When a NASA official
00:22:12Called to ask
00:22:13If she was still
00:22:13Interested in the job
00:22:15Oh, you know I am
00:22:16I can't believe it
00:22:21Oh
00:22:22I
00:22:23Okay, I
00:22:26I don't know what to say
00:22:27Except thanks so much
00:22:29Dr. Fisher's husband
00:22:31Also was considered
00:22:32For the job of astronaut
00:22:33But William Fisher
00:22:34Was not chosen
00:22:35Instead
00:22:36He'll move to Houston
00:22:38With his wife
00:22:39You know
00:22:41I wasn't feeling bad at all
00:22:42I was happy for her
00:22:45I thought she was perfect
00:22:46For the job
00:22:47There wasn't one iota
00:22:48Of resentment
00:22:50Or of disappointment
00:22:52You know
00:22:53It was just
00:22:53Yes for her
00:22:54No for me
00:22:54The 35 candidates
00:22:57Begin two years
00:22:58Of unisex
00:22:58Interracial training
00:23:00At the Johnson Space Center
00:23:01Those who pass
00:23:02Will become astronauts
00:23:03My friends
00:23:06Said
00:23:06What?
00:23:08You know
00:23:08Like
00:23:08Shy
00:23:09Studious
00:23:11Anna
00:23:11Is going to be
00:23:12An astronaut
00:23:13Nobody still
00:23:15Quite believed it
00:23:16And I have to say
00:23:17That I
00:23:17Almost didn't believe
00:23:18It myself
00:23:19Still
00:23:19It just seemed
00:23:20So surreal
00:23:21And I realized
00:23:23It was
00:23:24Historically significant
00:23:26Shannon Lucid
00:23:28She's a postdoctoral fellow
00:23:30Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation
00:23:32In Oklahoma City
00:23:33But I didn't spend
00:23:34A lot of time
00:23:35Thinking about it
00:23:36Judith Resnick
00:23:38Product development
00:23:39With the Xerox Corporation
00:23:41Other than being
00:23:41Very happy
00:23:42That women were now
00:23:43Being given the chance
00:23:45Next is Sally Ride
00:23:47And
00:23:48Thinking to myself
00:23:50Now don't screw up
00:23:51Who got to
00:23:53Make sure that
00:23:54All of us succeed
00:23:55So that the women
00:23:56That come after us
00:23:57Will have the same
00:23:58Opportunities
00:23:59Catherine Sullivan
00:24:01Ronald McNair
00:24:04A mission specialist
00:24:05Captain Richard Mullane
00:24:08Oh god
00:24:10Look how young
00:24:11Oh my god
00:24:12Look like a child
00:24:14One thing I learned
00:24:16One thing I learned rapidly
00:24:17There
00:24:17That white males
00:24:18Were invisible
00:24:18To the press
00:24:19I could have
00:24:20Walked naked
00:24:21Across that stage
00:24:22At that point
00:24:22Nobody would have
00:24:23Seen it
00:24:23Because they were
00:24:24All focused
00:24:25On those women
00:24:25And African American
00:24:27Astronauts
00:24:27And mostly the women
00:24:29I certainly
00:24:32Harbored my suspicions
00:24:35About the civilians
00:24:36And the women
00:24:36Because I had never
00:24:37Worked with civilians
00:24:38Or women
00:24:39So I was suspicious
00:24:40Of
00:24:41Of them
00:24:43Whether they were
00:24:44Going to be able
00:24:44To really
00:24:45Fill the role
00:24:46Of an astronaut
00:24:47For 20 years
00:24:49In this country
00:24:49The word astronaut
00:24:50Automatically meant
00:24:51A man
00:24:52But that's changed
00:24:53What happens
00:24:54When you meet
00:24:54A man
00:24:55And you say
00:24:56I'm an astronaut
00:24:57Does he say
00:24:58Yeah you're too cute
00:24:59To be an astronaut
00:25:00Come on
00:25:00Little lady
00:25:01You can't be an astronaut
00:25:02I just tell him
00:25:03I'm an engineer
00:25:04You don't tell him
00:25:05You're an astronaut
00:25:06Not unless he asks
00:25:07I had been in combat
00:25:09And these people
00:25:11Had done nothing
00:25:12But studied
00:25:13And been in laboratories
00:25:15And stuff like that
00:25:16I was in Vietnam
00:25:20In 69
00:25:21And uh
00:25:2330 of my classmates
00:25:24Out of the army
00:25:25Academy
00:25:25Died over there
00:25:27So it was a
00:25:28A grim time
00:25:29This was a war
00:25:34Against communism
00:25:35Which we had all
00:25:36Been taught
00:25:36Was the greatest evil
00:25:37That existed
00:25:38So I wanted to be there
00:25:40I wanted to go do
00:25:41What I saw those
00:25:42Heroic airmen
00:25:43Do it in world war 2
00:25:44Fight the enemy
00:25:45There's no way
00:25:52That a civilian
00:25:53I don't care
00:25:54Who they are
00:25:55Male, female
00:25:56That a civilian
00:25:56Is going to be able
00:25:58To equal
00:25:58That flying experience
00:26:00On the edge
00:26:04Of a mangrove swamp
00:26:05South of Miami
00:26:06Was six women
00:26:07Who want to be
00:26:08America's first
00:26:09Female astronauts
00:26:10Began their training
00:26:11Survival training
00:26:13Excellent
00:26:14A few had difficulty
00:26:16Muscling themselves
00:26:17Into life rafts
00:26:18But so did
00:26:19Some of the men
00:26:20The only special
00:26:22Consideration for the women
00:26:23Was protection
00:26:24From photographers
00:26:25Which they needed
00:26:26It was such a sense
00:26:29Of belonging
00:26:30And such a sense
00:26:31Of finally being
00:26:33Where I wanted to be
00:26:34I guess because
00:26:35I studied so hard
00:26:37It was like the first
00:26:38Time ever in my life
00:26:39I was ever able
00:26:40To just like
00:26:40Really have fun
00:26:41As a little girl
00:26:44Did you mostly want
00:26:44To grow up
00:26:45And be an astronaut
00:26:45A doctor
00:26:46Or a wife and mother
00:26:48All of the above
00:26:49You know
00:26:51It was hard
00:26:52Because you know
00:26:52I wanted to be
00:26:53Real excited
00:26:54But I didn't want
00:26:55To you know
00:26:56Make Bill feel bad
00:26:58What was the motivation
00:27:11That kept you going
00:27:11Because that must have been tough
00:27:12Well you know the answer
00:27:14To that
00:27:14They hadn't told me no
00:27:15They hadn't told me no
00:27:17They said go ahead
00:27:18And get another degree
00:27:19Get more experience
00:27:20And come back
00:27:21When we have our next selection
00:27:23The space agency today
00:27:25Selected 19 new candidates
00:27:27To be astronauts
00:27:28This is the second group
00:27:29Of pilots and scientists
00:27:30To be selected
00:27:31Specifically for the
00:27:32Space Shuttle program
00:27:33NASA's Space Shuttle program
00:27:35Does not lift off
00:27:36Until next year
00:27:37But it is getting
00:27:38A little pre-flight publicity
00:27:39With the announcement
00:27:40Of a husband and wife
00:27:41Astronaut team
00:27:42They are Bill
00:27:43And Anna Fisher
00:27:45Did it change things
00:27:47Between you both?
00:27:48No it was much easier
00:27:50After that
00:27:50Because I didn't feel guilty
00:27:52About being selected
00:27:54And him not being selected
00:27:55Besides I had seniority
00:27:59My fellow citizens
00:28:09Of this great nation
00:28:10I accept your nomination
00:28:12For the presidency
00:28:14Of the United States
00:28:15For those who have
00:28:20Abandoned hopes
00:28:21We'll restore hope
00:28:23And we'll welcome them
00:28:24Into a great national crusade
00:28:26To make America
00:28:26Great again
00:28:28T-minus 10
00:28:349
00:28:358
00:28:357
00:28:366
00:28:375
00:28:384
00:28:39We've gone for
00:28:40Main engine start
00:28:41We have main engine start
00:28:42The very first shuttle launch
00:28:44Was a very very big deal
00:28:46Not just to NASA
00:28:47But to all us new astronauts
00:28:49Because we didn't know
00:28:49We had a career yet
00:28:50To that point
00:28:51It was theoretical
00:28:52America's first space shuttle
00:28:56You see everybody
00:29:01Getting a bigger and bigger smile
00:29:03As we got further and further
00:29:04Into the launch
00:29:05And then finally
00:29:05When we heard
00:29:06Main engine cut off
00:29:07Meaning
00:29:07Now you're safely in orbit
00:29:09We all just jumped up
00:29:10And cheered
00:29:10It was like
00:29:13Oh my god
00:29:13This thing is working
00:29:14It was like
00:29:15It is gonna work
00:29:16It's nearly six years
00:29:17Since the Americans
00:29:18Had a man in space
00:29:19And in that time
00:29:20The Russians have had dozens
00:29:21So on Florida's space coast
00:29:23Where the flight began
00:29:24There is a feeling
00:29:25Expressed here
00:29:26With more gusto than grammar
00:29:27Of an overdue triumph
00:29:29And of having got one back
00:29:31This put America
00:29:33Firmly in the lead
00:29:34In space
00:29:34One of those moments
00:29:37Where you just said
00:29:37Proud to be an American
00:29:38Yeah, we were able
00:29:39To pull this off
00:29:40Today, many people
00:29:42Found themselves
00:29:43Glued to TV sets
00:29:44So they could share
00:29:45A piece of history
00:29:46In the making
00:29:47Two
00:29:47One
00:29:48Let's go
00:29:49Re-entry and landing
00:29:54Were seen on television
00:29:55Through virtually all
00:29:56Of Western Europe
00:29:57The popular notion
00:30:01Is that America
00:30:02Needed a success
00:30:03Columbia was seen
00:30:05To be it
00:30:05You said you'd do it
00:30:07And you beat the Russians
00:30:07You beat everyone
00:30:08You spend a lot of money, you've got troubles in your country, you deserve success.
00:30:13Once again, the Soviets made only brief reference,
00:30:17and as they have since the mission began,
00:30:19concentrated on the shuttle's military potential.
00:30:22And many people are concerned that the arms race will be extended to space.
00:30:27The military was a big partner.
00:30:29In fact, the military drove some of the specifications for the size of the cargo bay.
00:30:34You know, they said, hey, we need a vehicle that can carry this type of weight into orbit.
00:30:38So the military had a lot to say about the design of the shuttle.
00:30:42And when you say military, what does that mean?
00:30:44We carry secret satellites, you know.
00:30:48And can you say what those payloads were?
00:30:49No, I can't talk about those.
00:30:51That's still classified.
00:30:51Oh yeah, still classified, yeah.
00:30:53Right.
00:30:53Yeah.
00:30:54You know, these are, you know, national secrets, you know.
00:30:57You're sworn to secrecy on these things.
00:30:59You don't talk about them.
00:31:03The space program in general, and the shuttle program in particular,
00:31:07going a long way to help our country recapture its spirit of vitality and confidence.
00:31:14We must never forget that as long as there are frontiers to be explored and conquered,
00:31:20Americans will lead the way.
00:31:26Jet Magazine, yeah.
00:31:27Have a look.
00:31:28Yeah, I have this.
00:31:30This is the epitome of rock star right here.
00:31:34I got this thing blowing up like this at my house to this day.
00:31:39There's my brother.
00:31:40There's my brother.
00:31:43Three black men in a space suit, that was special.
00:31:47That got me.
00:31:48I was, I was impressed.
00:31:50I was at the Navy's test pilot school.
00:32:03You're flying an airplane in a place that's never been flown.
00:32:06Either you're flying a speed that's never been flown, an altitude that's never been flown.
00:32:09So you're just trying to make sure that it didn't tumble or do something bad.
00:32:17Every once in a while, they'd come apart and you'd lose the airplane.
00:32:22And the guy flying it ends up bailing out.
00:32:31And this was something you enjoyed doing?
00:32:33Mm-hmm.
00:32:35Loved it.
00:32:35We had gotten word that there were three or four NASA T-38s coming in.
00:32:44And so I went out to the flight line, like a lot of us, to greet them.
00:32:47And then I saw this black guy get out.
00:32:50And I went, wow.
00:32:52So I rushed out to meet him and introduce myself.
00:32:55And when we had an opportunity, I took him home to meet Jackie, meet my wife and kids.
00:32:59I was mesmerized talking to him.
00:33:01And as he left to go back to Houston, he asked me if I was going to apply for the space program.
00:33:05I said, not on your life.
00:33:07And he looked at me real strange.
00:33:09He said, why not?
00:33:09I said, they never picked me.
00:33:11And he paused for a moment and then looked.
00:33:13He said, that is the dumbest thing I ever heard.
00:33:16How do you know if you don't ask?
00:33:19And I felt like that'd be it.
00:33:21I said, holy cheese.
00:33:23That's why I say Ron McNair is my idol and my role model, because he painfully reminded me that I had forgotten what my mom and dad taught me growing up, that I could do anything I wanted to do.
00:33:38But anyway, I ended up being selected in the second group of spaceships last month.
00:33:51That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
00:34:04And he was right.
00:34:05Dr. Ron McNair is 33 and becomes the second black American in space.
00:34:12He's considered an authority in some types of laser physics, but he's also an accomplished musician and an award-winning black belt karate instructor.
00:34:20When Ron was selected for his first flight, how did your mom and dad react?
00:34:31Well, my mother got real nervous about that.
00:34:34I mean, her baby's going to go into space.
00:34:39Well, my dad, he's ready to pass out cigars.
00:34:41I mean, my boy, the astronaut, I mean, it's different for guys.
00:34:45We got down to about four seconds prior to liftoff, when the main engines began to throttle up to 100%.
00:34:52All of a sudden, the vibrations set in like I've never seen before.
00:34:57The countdown continued, three, two, one, a T minus zero.
00:35:02I got a boop like I've never felt.
00:35:06And that 404 million pound vehicle literally leaped off of the launch pad.
00:35:12And we were on our way.
00:35:18Challenger Houston, you're going to end throttle up.
00:35:23Go end throttle up.
00:35:24Ron McNair may be in space, but his father's in heaven, thrilled to death that his son is aboard the shuttle.
00:35:46Oh, wow.
00:35:46Carl McNair has been monitoring the flight in the office of his auto body shop in Harlem.
00:35:52Ron was just a model kid.
00:35:55He was just perfect.
00:35:57And when Ron McNair comes back to Earth, it's a safe bet his father will still be on cloud nine.
00:36:03I just wish every father could have a son like I have.
00:36:08I need that.
00:36:10I've never seen that.
00:36:13Oh, wow.
00:36:14That's a, that's an incredible piece because I haven't heard him say that much about it.
00:36:28Yeah, give me a moment.
00:36:30Okay.
00:36:53You okay?
00:36:54Yeah.
00:36:54Yeah.
00:36:54I can't imagine what went through his head as an eighth grade dropout, being the father of one of the first African-American astronauts.
00:37:12I can't imagine what he must have felt like an astronaut at that time.
00:37:24The only thing that could be greater than that is perhaps to be the president of the United States.
00:37:32How about let's giving a standing ovation to this wonderful crew?
00:37:47Thank you very much.
00:37:49Would all my family members please stand?
00:37:50Let me just see who's here.
00:37:52All of them.
00:37:52I want to see who's here.
00:37:54All right.
00:37:56Great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great.
00:37:58It's incredible.
00:38:04From slavery to space in four generations.
00:38:09Thanks a lot.
00:38:15NASA officials hope that today's successful launch will get them back on schedule for what should be a very busy year, critical to the space agency's future.
00:38:28The shuttle was not going to make any economic sense if it wasn't flying and flying often.
00:38:33In fact, the plan was 24 missions a year, a mission every two weeks.
00:38:38And so that translated into pressure on the agency to rapidly expand the shuttle flight rate.
00:38:44I remember sitting in meetings where some issue was being discussed.
00:38:53And one of the first things out of my mouth or other astronauts that might be in a meeting would be, what's this going to do to the schedule?
00:39:02In other words, how many weeks are we going to slip to fix this problem?
00:39:06So, in a way, we were projecting the same sense of urgency.
00:39:11Hey, we got to get going.
00:39:12We got, you know, we wanted to fly and we wanted to fly often.
00:39:16And that trumped everything else.
00:39:24Every so often, I would just have to pinch myself and say, I'm just so lucky to be here.
00:39:30But, of course, you're not a real astronaut until you've flown in space, so.
00:39:42Anna was pregnant, and there was some concern to how that would affect her flight status.
00:39:47No one else had gotten pregnant as an astronaut before.
00:39:51I am told, Anna, that you gave birth on Friday, then you were back to work on Monday.
00:39:58Is that so?
00:39:59And if so, how did you do that?
00:40:01I just was very fortunate.
00:40:03Had an easy delivery and a very good baby.
00:40:05And I was feeling fine and very excited.
00:40:08I love my baby, and I love work, and I wanted to go back.
00:40:12At pilots' meeting early, before the first shuttle flight,
00:40:15they told us, we expect to lose one in 25 shuttle flights.
00:40:214%.
00:40:22John Young stood up, the astronaut who was chief of the office,
00:40:27and he said, now I want to say something to you.
00:40:28If that 4% bothers you, if you're concerned, he said, leave,
00:40:32because there's 1,000 people waiting behind you to take your place.
00:40:37The point was, you don't belong here if that's a concern.
00:40:41I'm proud of him in the brain, I'm like we're walking through the rain.
00:40:47You know, occasionally I would think, is it really going to be worth the risk?
00:40:53You know, something could go wrong,
00:40:56and this might be all the time that I ever am going to get with Kristen.
00:41:06So, since I knew that she would not actually remember me,
00:41:10we just took lots of videos.
00:41:12I know there were some people who thought that what I was doing was wrong.
00:41:24Anna Fisher is a good astronaut, she's a good doctor,
00:41:27she's a good citizen, but is she a good mother?
00:41:30That will be the question on millions of minds
00:41:33when the first astronaut mother goes up,
00:41:35leaving a year-old daughter behind.
00:41:36I would say it was probably
00:41:45two-thirds like this
00:41:49and one-third supportive, you know.
00:41:51It probably wasn't 50-50.
00:41:54What's that?
00:41:55What's that?
00:41:56Oh, that's a space shuttle.
00:42:01Space shuttle Discovery.
00:42:03Mommy's going to find a discovery in six weeks.
00:42:06Man, I mean, I watched that and I think,
00:42:14thank God I wasn't older.
00:42:16Thank God I couldn't understand what was going on.
00:42:19I would have been so scared and so upset.
00:42:24I mean, it was a blessing that I was as little as I was.
00:42:29Kristen's too little to know it,
00:42:31but this is going to be my last night long,
00:42:33and I want to have a few minutes before she gets tired.
00:42:39Oh!
00:42:41Let's wave to Daddy.
00:42:43I love you, baby.
00:42:45Let's wave.
00:42:46Can we wave?
00:42:47Oh!
00:42:50Bye, guys!
00:42:50I'm so torn on it, actually.
00:42:56Like, even as I sit here now,
00:42:58part of me is like,
00:43:00fuck yeah, go.
00:43:02Like, go to space,
00:43:04achieve your dream.
00:43:05It's incredible.
00:43:06And then there is another part that's like,
00:43:10oh, man, like,
00:43:11don't go.
00:43:13Don't go.
00:43:19But I look at those videos,
00:43:21and it was such a sweet year.
00:43:23And I think in some ways,
00:43:28it made her, you know,
00:43:30really treasure and savor those moments all the more
00:43:32because you know there's a chance
00:43:34that you're going to die.
00:43:44At T-minus, 2 hours, 28 minutes,
00:43:476 seconds and counting,
00:43:4951A crew is on their way.
00:43:50Even when you're going to war,
00:43:56you know there's a good chance
00:43:58that you might die.
00:44:00But how many other professions
00:44:01have an actual countdown clock
00:44:03to the moment when you might perish?
00:44:05Like, literally to the second.
00:44:1011, 10, we're go for main engine start.
00:44:147, 6, we have main engine start.
00:44:173, 2, 1,
00:44:19And liftoff, liftoff of discoveries
00:44:23of the shuttle has cleared the tower.
00:44:31She was the first mother in space.
00:44:34She was the first person
00:44:35who ever had to deal
00:44:37with this kind of scrutiny and decision.
00:44:39I mean, that took such discipline
00:44:51and strength to be able to do
00:44:53because I know she...
00:44:57I know how much she loved me.
00:45:02is this Rick?
00:45:16Yes, sir.
00:45:17How are you doing, Mr. President?
00:45:18Well, just fine.
00:45:19And you, it's good to hear your voice.
00:45:22Anna, I couldn't help but wonder
00:45:23if you'd recommend a career
00:45:25as an astronaut to your daughter, Kristen.
00:45:28Oh, that I would, Mr. President.
00:45:31It's a truly incredible experience
00:45:33and I'm going to recommend it to her highly.
00:45:37Oh, that's wonderful.
00:45:38All right.
00:45:39Bye-bye.
00:45:48People have asked me,
00:45:49do you think your mom was selfish
00:45:51for going to space?
00:45:56It's a fair question,
00:45:57but it's also a question
00:45:58that people aren't asking the men.
00:46:04We have a couple of men.
00:46:06You could ask any astronaut that question.
00:46:09I'd venture to say
00:46:10a lot of them
00:46:11were being a bit selfish.
00:46:19Maybe my mom was too.
00:46:22Hey, Kristen.
00:46:24Look at my caterpillar.
00:46:25Grandma's flying.
00:46:26Any time you're on a crew,
00:46:52you're together for so long,
00:46:55you know, probably the better part
00:46:56of two years,
00:46:58it's like a combat team almost.
00:47:01You know, the enemy of space out there
00:47:02ready to exploit any mistake
00:47:04you might make.
00:47:05A good astronaut
00:47:06is a very difficult thing to...
00:47:09And I didn't realize until years later
00:47:10the history I was surrounded with.
00:47:13Here was Sally Ride,
00:47:14the first American woman in space.
00:47:17I flew with Judy,
00:47:18second American woman in space.
00:47:20I was going to parties
00:47:22and palling around with, you know,
00:47:23Ron McNair
00:47:24and the other African-American astronauts
00:47:26who were making history.
00:47:30Looking back on it,
00:47:31I can see the ridiculousness
00:47:34of me thinking, you know,
00:47:35that I'm better than them
00:47:36just because I'd had this flying experience.
00:47:38They were incredibly smart people,
00:47:40very talented.
00:47:41And I feel privileged
00:47:46that I was around people like that.
00:47:48I was arrogant.
00:47:50That's the word.
00:47:51I was arrogant.
00:47:54I look back on it
00:47:55and I've got this sense of shame.
00:47:59How could I have ever,
00:48:01ever had that attitude?
00:48:04You know, and...
00:48:06At any rate, yeah,
00:48:07I'm glad I changed.
00:48:08We were young.
00:48:18We were brash.
00:48:21You know, we were eager
00:48:23to get into space.
00:48:26We...
00:48:27We had the right stuff, I guess.
00:48:34And it appeared
00:48:35that we were doing
00:48:36exactly what had been planned.
00:48:38and we were going to be operating
00:48:39a spacecraft
00:48:40at airline levels
00:48:42of reliability and safety
00:48:44and, hey, we've done it.
00:48:46You know, there was a feeling
00:48:46that we really had gotten there.
00:48:50And the garden of dreams
00:48:52was in full blossom.
00:48:54That's what it was,
00:48:54that feeling.
00:48:58Exciting, exciting times.
00:48:59The countdown clock is ticking
00:49:05for the space shuttle Challenger.
00:49:07The flight's seven-member crew
00:49:08arrived at the Kennedy Space Center
00:49:10late this afternoon
00:49:11and, if all goes well,
00:49:12Krista McAuliffe
00:49:13will become the first school teacher
00:49:15in space.
00:49:16Also making this journey
00:49:17into space aboard the Challenger
00:49:18will be Lake City,
00:49:19South Carolina native
00:49:20Ron McNair.
00:49:21Ron came to my apartment
00:49:26and he had this
00:49:28VHS cassette tape
00:49:29part of the footage
00:49:31that he'd taken in space,
00:49:32but he only was interested
00:49:34in one specific
00:49:36part of the tape.
00:49:38He was always fascinated
00:49:46with the launch itself.
00:49:50And he played that up
00:49:52until it entered orbit.
00:49:56Then he rewinded
00:49:57and he started over again.
00:50:01I had to buy new speakers on
00:50:04and he kept turning the volume up.
00:50:06Blew out one of my speakers
00:50:07and all because the roar he felt.
00:50:10He wanted to feel it.
00:50:11The same kind of power
00:50:13and the sensation
00:50:13that he felt
00:50:14when it was lifting off
00:50:15the launch pad.
00:50:18Because that's all he played,
00:50:20just that part,
00:50:20over and over again.
00:50:33He shared with me
00:50:34that he was planning
00:50:35to leave the space program.
00:50:37He'd gotten an offer
00:50:39to become a professor
00:50:41at the University
00:50:42of South Carolina.
00:50:44One of the schools
00:50:46that would not have allowed us
00:50:47in there
00:50:48back when we graduated.
00:50:50So he was planning
00:50:51on leaving NASA?
00:50:52That's right.
00:50:53He wanted one more flight.
00:50:55One more flight.
00:50:56And that was going to be it.
00:50:57Oh, God, no.
