It is said that a Mongolian learns to ride a horse before learning to walk. This national sport is celebrated during Naadam, the country’s national festival, which features horse racing, archery competitions, and wrestling matches. From the vast deserted steppes to Ulaanbaatar, the entire country becomes an arena.

04:13in Mongolia and why it has generated such popular enthusiasm.
04:18For Nadam, the horses are prepared months in advance.
04:22Despite their size, Mongolian horses are very fast and very hardy.
04:30Races are organized according to the age of the horses.
04:33And they take their place on the steppes.
04:35over distances varying from 15 to 35 km,
04:38according to the category.
04:41Some of the riders are barely as tall as their mounts.
04:44The youngest are 5 years old, the oldest 12.
04:47The Mongols ensure that this mixed competition
04:50is not too dangerous for the young riders,
04:52many of whom can ride just as well as their parents.
04:57It was partly due to such horses
04:59that Genghis Khan conquered half of Asia.
05:11The horses are unchained.
05:13"Han to the woman, the horses are unleashed in anger"

05:29Here we go.
05:59At a national festival, the Nadam brings together whole families during this festive sporting event.
06:29Wrestling is the main event.
06:37More than just a simple game, it's an art, a true institution, just as sumo is in Japan.
06:42Oddly enough, there are no weight, age or rank categories.
06:53All participants are mixed together and take part in the tournament equally.
06:58A child, for example, might end up in competition with an adult.
07:01Wrestling has been practiced since the beginning of time.
07:19The rules are simple.
07:22The participant who brings his opponent to the ground first wins and will go on to the next round.
07:27Nine rounds are held over the three days of competition.
07:44Wrestlers who win five rounds in a row are awarded the title of Falcon.
07:48A wrestler who wins six rounds becomes an elephant.
07:52The winner of the whole competition is changed into a lion.
07:55If a lion wins again the following year, he becomes a giant.
07:59A giant who wins a third time becomes a national giant.
08:03And if the national giant is strong enough to win four times in a row, he is declared invincible, naturally.
08:09A giant who wins this way to win four times in an increase.

32:25Hulanbator is the capital of Mongolia.
32:27It's the political, economic, industrial, scientific and cultural center.
32:35Administratively, it has the status, unique in Mongolia, of a federal municipality comparable to that of a province.
32:46The city stretches from east to west in the bottom of the Tuul River valley.
32:50Today, the Mongolian capital numbers about 1.3 million inhabitants, or about 45% of the total population of Mongolia.
32:59Ulaanbaatar is a modern city, mixing Soviet architecture with new constructions.
33:13During Nadam, everything is closed. It's the time for Mongols to meet and celebrate for three days.
33:20Cars proudly sport the colors of the Mongolian flag, and everyone dresses up for the festivities.
33:28The city center is easily visited on foot.
33:31Ulaanbaatar is centered around Genghis Khan Square, formerly Sukhbata Square.
33:37The statue of the revolutionary hero Sukhbata was erected here, and since 2006, a giant statue of Genghis Khan has dominated the square.

42:13The Mongolian railway network consists almost solely of the Trans-Mongolian line that links Moscow to Peking.
42:197,621 kilometers apart.
42:24The journey from Moscow to Ulaanbaatar
42:27It takes five days.
42:28From Beijing, it takes approximately 30 hours.
42:32So, access to Ulaanbaatar is easy.
42:34by train from the Russian or Chinese state.

44:55The Ulaanbaatar-Nadam is the biggest in Mongolia.
44:58It's also the most famous and the best organized.
45:01For the residents of Ulaanbaatar, this is a major event.
45:07They're not going to lose that for nothing in the world.
45:12Various activities take place inside the stadium,
45:15where the competitions are held.
45:17It's a bit like a fairground.
45:22You can eat traditional dishes,
45:24open popular songs,
45:26or have your picture taken in traditional costume.
47:01Women are allowed to participate in the archery and horse racing events.
47:11They are not, however, allowed to participate in the wrestling competition.
47:15This has not always been the case.
47:22In the past, women fought and sometimes beat men in wrestling matches.
47:28In order to prevent such embarrassment,
47:30women were barred from participating in wrestling.
47:33A new regulation was created.
47:40The traditional Bolero jacket was reversed,
47:44so that the little jacket would henceforth cover the back and not the chest,
47:48thus making this costume unsuitable for the fair sex to wear.
47:52Several hundred wrestlers take part in the Ulaanbaatar Nadam.
48:12They are so many, in fact, that they might wait several hours before fighting.

50:47The newfound freedom for Mongols and their impressive faculties to adapt is helping this essentially rural country to develop its wealth and its resources.
50:56Nadam is one of its attributes that Mongolia is constantly developing.
51:00It's talked about both within Mongolia and abroad.
51:04But Nadam is much more than a simple sports competition.
51:07It represents an important part of Mongolian culture.
51:10The festival thus allows traditions to be preserved by all generations of Mongols.
51:15Though it's not a mission, it has been some part of it.
