00:00Why is Socrates so important and why is he a big turning point or rather a take-off?

00:05Because he brought another dimension to Greek thought.

00:09He turned it inward.

00:11The four Hellenistic schools, they all come from Socrates.

00:15All of them owe their allegiance to Socrates.

00:19A bit similar to how the six Indian schools all claim reverence and allegiance to the Vedas.

00:26That is the importance of Socrates in Greece.

00:28You could say he is the Ved there.

00:30He said the primary purpose of philosophy must be life.

00:34How to live.

00:35This was a big change, a radical departure.

00:38Because we are living people and there can be no question bigger than this one.

00:42So he changed the entire direction of philosophy.

00:45And he also brought in new methods.

00:47The Socratic method, you have heard of it.

00:49Cross-examination and dialectics.

00:51So fond he was of discussions that in spite of not being rich,

00:57he would actually pay people to discuss with him.

01:00Bluntly, you could say he was bribing them.
