The United Nations is prepared to support efforts, including Malaysia’s proposed peacekeeping role in Gaza, once key players decide on next steps to maintain the ceasefire.
Its secretary-general Antonio Guterres said it is not yet clear under what circumstances a peacekeeping force will be created.
00:00So, Malaysia earlier expressed interest to join a Gaza peacekeeping mission.
00:09I think yesterday the Prime Minister told about it, the interest in Gaza's peacekeeping mission from Malaysia.
00:18So, what will be the mechanism and what kind of role do you think Malaysia can play?
00:24First of all, in relation to Gaza, I would like to express my appreciation for what has been the constant coherent policy of foreign policy of Malaysia that has no double standards
00:38and that has been strongly advocating for the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and statehoods.
00:46It is not yet clear what kind of force in what circumstances will be created.
00:53What is important now is to make sure that the ceasefire holds, that the phase one of the agreement is fully implemented
01:01and the UN is ready to play whatever role the key actors involved in this process will determine.
