00:00There may be a new world record for longest successful sniper shot, and surprise surprise,
00:05it happened in Ukraine.
00:07Not only did they set a world record, the Ukrainian sniper team took out two enemy soldiers
00:13with a single round.
00:14And before we get into it, reminder this is a story about snipers, so viewer discretion
00:20is advised.
00:25This is video of the August 14th incident, recorded and posted to social media by Ukrainian
00:31war reporter Yuri Budasov.
00:33It shows Ukraine's combined Pravide or Ghost Sniper Unit firing numerous shots with a Zato
00:40Snipex Alligator Anti-Material Rifle.
00:44An unmanned aerial vehicle using artificial intelligence helped in both acquiring the
00:49targets and confirming the shot.
00:52Budasov says two Russian soldiers were killed when one of the alligator's rounds came through
00:57the window they were standing next to.
01:00The shot was fired from a declared range of 4,000 meters, which is 13,123 feet, or just
01:09about two and a half miles.
01:11Now at a distance that great, the Ghost Unit had to deal with all sorts of environmental
01:16conditions like elevation, wind, humidity, and the fact their targets might have been moving.
01:24So the whole one shot, one kill sniper mantra goes out the window in situations like this,
01:30which is why we see the Ukrainian Ghost Snipers taking numerous shots before scoring a successful
01:36hit.
01:37Or hits.
01:38Sorry Tom Berenger.
01:39From now on, one shot, one kill, no exceptions.
01:45The rifle that made the shot, the aptly named Snipex Alligator, is a beast.
01:51It's made by Zato Industrial, and at 6.5 feet, it's taller than most men.
01:57It shoots 14.5 by 114-millimeter caliber rounds, which is the same size bullet fired in some
02:04Soviet-era anti-aircraft guns.
02:08So it's a good thing the alligator weighs 55 pounds, and has what's known as a floating
02:13barrel to help deal with the recoil.
02:15The weight of the gun means the Ghost Unit is not exactly the most mobile sniper team in
02:21history, but when you can reach out and touch someone more than two miles away, you don't
02:26necessarily need to be.
02:28The maximum range of the alligator's round is 7 kilometers, which is more than four miles.
02:34The alligator uses such a big bullet because it was originally designed as an anti-material
02:39rifle to take out armored vehicles.
02:43But the reality of warfare means using whatever weapons you have available for the mission
02:47at hand.
02:48So employing anti-material rifles against personnel is becoming more common in Ukraine.
02:55It was another anti-material rifle, the Lord of the Horizon, that previously held the record
03:01for longest successful sniper shot at 3,800 meters.
03:04A Ukrainian sniper was also responsible for that shot.
