00:00President Donald Trump appeared to change the nation's policy on Chinese student visas
00:04on Monday, announcing he is allowing a massive wave of students into the U.S. It's a shift
00:10from a policy Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced in May that said the U.S. is revoking
00:15visas from Chinese students.
00:18I hear so many stories about we're not going to allow their students, we're going to allow
00:23their students to come in, we're going to allow, it's very important, 600,000 students.
00:28U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told Fox News' Laura Ingraham Monday that Trump
00:34sought for the students to help the 15 percent of colleges who would face closures without
00:38a boost in attendance.
00:40Trump has not detailed how or if the visas would be allocated.
00:44The president's announcement drew sharp criticism from some of his closest allies, like Republican
00:49Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.
00:51She wrote on X that, quote, if refusing to allow these Chinese students to attend our
00:56schools causes 15 percent of them to fail, then these schools should fail anyways because
01:01they are being propped up by the CCP.
01:04Trump noted that relations between the U.S. and China have improved since the Biden administration
01:09warranting a new economic approach.
01:12We have a very strong relationship, Howard.
01:15Trump has threatened to impose a 200 percent tariff on imports from China, but has suspended
01:24the levy until at least November.
