00:36
Hello everyone, I'm Kaylee Carey, and today for Craig Negrelli.
00:40
This morning, Gaza's ceasefire is holding, but only barely.
00:44
After a deadly day of fire and blame, Israel says the truce is back on,
00:48
following what it called a serious violation by Hamas.
00:52
Israel says Hamas killed two soldiers Sunday,
00:54
triggering retaliatory strikes that left at least 44 dead across Gaza
00:58
and temporarily shut down aid deliveries.
01:01
Israel's defense minister said Hamas would, quote,
01:04
learn the hard way that the IDF is determined to protect soldiers.
01:08
Hamas denies any attack,
01:10
accusing Israel of using flimsy pretexts to justify new strikes.
01:15
By nightfall, Israel announced it was reinstating the ceasefire
01:18
and allowing humanitarian aid to resume.
01:21
Vice President J.D. Vance, speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews last night,
01:26
said the U.S. expects ups and downs as the peace deal takes hold.
01:30
He also said he may head to Israel in the coming days.
01:34
There are going to be moments where you have people within Gaza
01:37
where you're not quite sure what they're actually doing.
01:39
So we think that it has the best chance for a sustainable peace.
01:44
But even if it does that, it's going to have hills and valleys
01:47
and we're going to have to monitor the situation.
01:48
CNN reports two of the deal's U.S. architects, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff,
01:54
are also heading to the region this week
01:56
as the Trump administration pushes for phase two of its Mid-East peace plan.
02:01
An Amazon outage is wreaking havoc worldwide this morning,
02:04
taking down some of the Internet's biggest names.
02:07
Amazon Web Services, a cloud backbone for thousands of companies,
02:11
suffered a major failure Monday,
02:13
knocking out apps and websites from Robinhood and Snapchat to Hulu, McDonald's and Roblox.
02:18
The company says the issue originated in its eastern U.S. region
02:22
and the engineers are working to fix it.
02:25
The website down-detector showed spikes in complaints from users around the globe.
02:30
Even AI startup Perplexity and crypto platform Coinbase reported interruptions,
02:35
both blaming AWS.
02:37
The Pentagon says another U.S. strike in the Caribbean has killed three suspected traffickers,
02:43
part of what the Trump administration is calling its new war on the cartels.
02:47
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the strike Sunday,
02:50
saying the boat, linked to a Colombian terror group,
02:53
was destroyed Friday with, quote,
02:55
substantial amounts of narcotics on board.
02:58
All three men on the vessel were killed.
03:00
No U.S. forces were hurt.
03:02
Hegseth posted on X that these cartels are the al-Qaeda of the Western Hemisphere,
03:06
adding they will be hunted and killed, just like al-Qaeda.
03:10
This was the seventh strike in recent weeks,
03:12
part of the administration's push to target drug cartels as terrorist groups.
03:17
But critics, like Republican Senator Rand Paul,
03:19
says the policy amounts to summary executions without due process.
03:24
The FBI and Secret Service are investigating a security scare near Palm Beach International Airport
03:30
after a suspicious hunting stand was found with a clear line of sight to Air Force One.
03:35
The structure was discovered Thursday during a routine sweep,
03:38
just hours before President Trump's arrival in Florida on Friday.
03:43
Investigators say the wooden perch overlooked a section of the airport where private planes
03:47
and at times Air Force One have parked.
03:50
A senior official told NBC News that the stand was located across the street from that area
03:55
and that Air Force One has parked there in the past.
03:59
CBS News reports the stand appeared to have been there for months based on its condition.
04:03
This morning, questions about how a live fire demonstration
04:08
for the Marine Corps' 250th anniversary went wrong at Camp Pendleton.
04:13
The New York Times reports that a 155-millimeter shell
04:17
prematurely detonated Saturday, sending shrapnel onto highway patrol vehicles
04:21
parked on a closed ramp along Interstate 5 in Oceanside, California.
04:26
The officers were part of Vice President J.D. Vance's security detail.
04:30
No one was hurt. Governor Gavin Newsom had ordered a 17-mile stretch of the freeway shut down
04:36
after objecting to the plan to fire over it, calling the move reckless.
04:40
Marine officials confirmed the shell exploded mid-air during the demonstration,
04:45
which was immediately terminated.
04:47
The U.S. Marines have launched an investigation into what went wrong.
04:51
The event was attended by Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
04:54
Two ground workers are dead after a cargo plane skidded off the runway and into the sea
05:00
at Hong Kong International Airport.
05:02
Officials say the plane struck an airport security vehicle around 4 a.m. local time today,
05:08
shoving it into the water with two employees inside.
05:11
The Emirates Boeing 747 had just arrived from Dubai and never issued a distress call before landing.
05:17
When rescue crews' teams arrived, the jumbo jet was split in two,
05:21
its four crew members unhurt and waiting at an open door to be pulled to safety.
05:26
Investigators are now looking into what caused the plane to veer off course in the final moments of landing.
05:33
Finally this morning, the hunt is on for a crew of masked thieves
05:36
after one of the most audacious heists in Louvre history.
05:40
In broad daylight Sunday, just 10 minutes after opening,
05:43
four masked thieves pulled off what French officials said happened in just seven minutes.
05:48
Using a mobile lift to scale the Louvre's facade,
05:50
they cut through a window into the museum's gilded Apollo Gallery,
05:54
the dazzling hall that showcases France's imperial crown jewels.
05:58
This is where Napoleon's family treasures have glittered for decades.
06:02
Cases of gold, sapphires, and emeralds under arched ceilings of gold leaf and light.
06:07
The thieves knew exactly where to go,
06:09
grinding through two display cases and making off with eight pieces linked to French royalty.
06:15
Including an emerald necklace and earrings from Empress Marie-Louise
06:18
and a tiara worn by the Empress Eugenie wife of Napoleon III,
06:23
one of the crowns belonging to Eugenie was found outside badly damaged.
06:28
Authorities say the stolen jewels are of inestimable value
06:31
and believe the thieves were highly trained,
06:34
possibly with inside knowledge of the building's security.
06:37
The museum will remain closed today.
06:40
And before we head out, here's what we're tracking today.
06:43
This morning in Illinois, jury selection begins in the murder trial of former Deputy Sean Grayson,
06:48
accused of fatally shooting Sonia Massey, an unarmed woman who called 911 for help.
06:54
At 11, President Trump greets the Prime Minister of Australia.
06:57
The two leaders will take questions in the Oval Office shortly after.
07:01
In North Carolina, lawmakers are set to begin redrawing congressional maps
07:05
that could help Republicans lock in 11 of 14 House seats ahead of 2026.
07:11
And later today in Chicago, a federal judge holds a hearing on body camera rules for immigration agents.
