00:00Preseason is over for the New York Knicks.
00:02They get a 113-108 victory over the Charlotte Hornets in their final preseason game.
00:06They lost only one game.
00:07Dexter Henry joined by Stephan Bondi.
00:09Steph, I know you are excited to get on to the regular season games.
00:12The games that actually count.
00:14But in this one, Jalen Brunson played really well.
00:1631 points, played a bunch of minutes, 34 minutes in this one.
00:20What have you made of his performance throughout this entire preseason?
00:23Yeah, it was a little uneven, but tonight was kind of those things where it was like,
00:26all right, this is Jalen Brunson.
00:27And Mike Brown came in with a plan of playing him a certain amount of minutes,
00:32certainly more minutes than he had ever played before during this preseason.
00:35And we were reminded that Jalen Brunson is a scorer,
00:38and he can take over games when you need him to.
00:41So I thought it was an encouraging performance for Jalen Brunson today.
00:45And, you know, the rest of the preseason was kind of like, you know,
00:49kind of like tiptoeing around the new offense and everything.
00:52Yeah, I had that feeling out process there, too.
00:54I think another player that played well tonight and throughout this preseason
00:56was Mikel Bridges.
00:58He had 16 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, 2 steals.
01:02Really good all-around game.
01:03He looks very comfortable in this offense.
01:04Yeah, and I think, you know, when you look at the different players that will play well
01:08in a speedy ball move, when the ball's moving and pace and everything like that,
01:13you look at Mikel Bridges.
01:14I think that suits him, that suits his style, that suits his game.
01:18And he did have an encouraging preseason.
01:21And he was healthy, you know, unlike a lot of the other guys.
01:23Yeah.
01:24He's always healthy, by the way.
01:25He is always healthy.
01:26He always plays.
01:27We saw some other guys not play tonight there, too.
01:29So a lot of the Knicks regular rotation guys didn't play.
01:32But somebody who did get some time, that was Landry Shamit.
01:35He played in this game.
01:36Garrison Matthews did not.
01:38Shamit shot the ball pretty well.
01:40Did he lock down the final spot?
01:41Yeah, I don't have any confirmation.
01:43But, you know, I think that was an indication of where this might go.
01:47And we went in the locker room just now, and Garrison Matthews' locker room was cleaned out.
01:52Now, that could be because he didn't play and he didn't have to shower and everything.
01:55But Landry Shamit was still there.
01:56So if I were to give somebody the edge, of course it would be Landry Shamit right now.
02:03Yeah, our Landry Shamit has the edge on that inside spot, according to Steph.
02:06Not reporting.
02:07But we'll see how that all plays out.
02:08Last thing, Steph, Knicks finished the preseason.
02:10Only one lost.
02:11Didn't get to go undefeated.
02:12It's that some people are going to be mad about that.
02:14But what do you make of what you saw in this team in the preseason?
02:17What are your final preseason thoughts as they get ready to start the regular season?
02:21Well, if I were going to give a grade, it would be incomplete.
02:23And certainly there were positive moments.
02:26But the injuries, like, you know, Josh Hart played a quarter.
02:30Not even that.
02:31Not even that.
02:32Not even that.
02:33OG Ananobi sprained his ankle.
02:35Carl Anthony Towns had a quad issue.
02:37So, you know, if the point of this was to build some chemistry and have guys familiar with each other in the starting lineup, that was not achieved.
02:45So we did not see this team whole for very long in the preseason.
02:48Should fans be concerned about these injuries they saw because you gave the incomplete grade?
02:52Should there be a concern about that at all?
02:54You know, according to the Knicks, these are not concerning.
02:57They're precautionary stuff.
03:00You know, Mitchell Robinson's situation is kind of, you know, you have the antennas raised because it's load management, they say.
03:06But he hadn't played in a week, you know, five days or whatever it is.
03:10And then they don't play again for another five days.
03:12So what are you load managing?
03:14You know, and when we asked that question, Mike Brown directed us to the medical staff.
03:19Of course, we're not allowed to talk to the medical staff.
03:21So we're not getting any answers there.
03:22We're not getting any answers there.
03:23Hopefully we'll have some answers soon.
03:25Knicks tip off their season on Wednesday against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
03:28We'll have a lot more on that.
03:29That is Stephan Bondi, the great beat writer, here for the New York Post covering the Knicks.
03:33I'm Dexter Henry.
03:33We'll catch you next time.
