00:00It's 2 of 82. The new New York Knicks are gearing up for their second impression tonight against the Boston Celtics at the Garden.
00:07Our New York Post sports reporter Jared Schwartz has two articles out about Mike Brown's new offense that might bring out the best in his stars and of course his role players as well.
00:17Jared, what's up, man? Thanks for hopping on with us. Let's get into this, man, because I feel like there are two New York head coaches whose offenses are under a microscope.
00:27And that's Brian Dabo with Jackson Dart. And then there's Mike Brown with Jalen Brunson.
00:32So we'll start with the article titled whole new Jalen Brunson on display for the Knicks next era.
00:39One game has been played so far in the season, but from what you've watched, how much do you think Jalen Brunson's role on offense has changed under Mike Brown?
00:49And is it for the good or for the bad?
00:51It's night and day, Brandon. And we saw that with the first game. He didn't shoot well.
00:57But the process of how they want to get him shots was was evident.
01:00And I dug into the numbers in that piece. And I have them here for you right here.
01:06He's coming. Mike Brown wants him to come off the ball way more.
01:09He doesn't want him to bring the ball up and pound the ball into the ground and have to create all these shots for himself.
01:14He wants him to create. He wants him to get catch and shoot opportunities, open shots in the corner.
01:19He wants him to get the ball in the paint without having to drive past his man.
01:23He took nine three-pointers in the game. Seven of them were catch and shoot.
01:28That's the most of any game he's played with the Knicks. So that's that's glaring.
01:32He averaged just over four dribbles every time he touched the ball and almost just under five seconds every time he touched the ball.
01:43Last year, he averaged six and six in those two categories. So he has the ball in his hands less.
01:49It's it's it's glaring that that they want to get the ball out of his hands to give him easier shots.
01:53And it was evident in game one. He didn't shoot well, but the way he got those shots was different.
02:00You saw ball movement. You saw other guys have a chance to eat and kind of Jalen Brunson didn't have to play hero ball.
02:07And I get it. That's one game sample size.
02:09But what they put on tape, I believe, is what Knicks fans were hoping for within this offense.
02:15And to continue to look back on Wednesday night's win, what else kind of stood out to you most about Mike Brown's offense
02:22and how he plans and planned on using guys not named Jalen Brunson?
02:27It's that, you know, that that you said it ball movement and pace.
02:32Those are the two things that Mike Brown wants most.
02:34And those are probably the two things that Tom Thibodeau was least known for ball movement and pace.
02:39You know, the Knicks last year were one of the most isolation heavy teams.
02:43And they were one of the slowest teams in terms of pace.
02:46The Knicks had one hundred five possessions on Wednesday last year.
02:49They averaged nine just over ninety seven, which was the fifth least in the NBA.
02:54And the one thing that that really stuck out to me was the secondary assists, you know, not the primary assist,
03:00but the secondary assist where, you know, I pass it to the guy who then gets the assist with they had.
03:08Seven of them on Wednesday last year.
03:10That was the most of any team's first game played, you know, across the NBA last year.
03:15They averaged three point six. So that is a big, you know, indication that the ball was moving more.
03:22There was there was more ball movement. There was more open shots.
03:25There was more space on the floor. And that's that's, you know, Mike Brown's vision.
03:31It might not always be pretty. You know, there might be a learning curve.
03:34There might be struggles. I get we did see struggles at times on Wednesday.
03:39But that ball movement and that pace was evident.
03:42And that's what Mike Brown wants. And that's what he's he so far got.
03:46The other thing was the three point shooting. I believe they took 40 on Wednesday.
03:51Mike Brown just wants more threes.
03:53Like like like Tom Thibodeau last year, the Knicks ranked near the bottom of the league in not in three point percentage,
04:00but in three point attempts. You know, they made a good percentage,
04:02but they just didn't take that many of them. And that often led to them losing like the numbers game.
04:07They call it where other teams just took more of them and they got more points out of them.
04:11They took 40 on Wednesday and Mike Brown said, I want even more.
04:15All right. More threes, more trays. Absolutely love it.
04:19And it's looking like not only is the star going to eat the superstars going to eat the stars,
04:24but also the role players as well, because all offseason, Jared, you know,
04:29all everyone talked about was the new additions to the Knicks bench.
04:33But Wednesday night, it was the guys who were were lost on the bench last season under Tibbs,
04:38who kind of made some of the biggest impacts in that win.
04:41I'm talking Deuce McBride, Landry Shamit and Tyler Colick.
04:45They all hit a big shot, sparked and sustained some runs and some momentum.
04:50So which one of these guys do you think is going to shine the most in Mike Brown's new system?
04:55Like you said, like all offseason, the talk was Yabu Saleh and Jordan Clarkson
05:00and what they can bring to the bench.
05:02And then it was the guys who were on the team last year that made the biggest impact.
05:06Of the guys that you mentioned, it's Miles McBride for me.
05:09He keeps getting better and better every single year.
05:12His role keeps growing and growing.
05:13And I think Mike Brown's system can really help that growth go exponentially.
05:18As we talked about before, Mike Brown likes pace.
05:21McBride is their fastest player.
05:22And he's the guy who likes to play with speed the most.
05:26He's the leader of that bench unit.
05:31And one thing that Mike Brown will want to do is play a small lineup with a lot of guards on the floor
05:36and a lot of guys who can shoot threes on the floor.
05:37It's something that Tom DeBito didn't like to do.
05:40We saw on Wednesday in crunch time he was closing with Miles McBride on the floor.
05:44It was a smaller lineup with Cat, Carl Anthony Towns at the five, O.G. at the four,
05:50Bridges, Miles McBride and Jalen Brunson.
05:52He likes to get five guys on the floor who can shoot.
05:55Miles McBride is certainly one of those guys.
05:58And Jalen Brunson was raving about him after the game.
06:01And he's a steady guy.
06:03He's a steady player.
06:04He plays both ways.
06:05He plays hard defense.
06:06And he can certainly shoot.
06:08And it could be a really big year for Miles McBride.
06:12Mike Brown wants to use this bench more and more.
06:15Miles McBride will be the centerpiece of that.
06:17And this system should only accentuate all of his strengths.
06:22All right.
06:22We got game two of 82 at the Garden tonight.
06:26The Celtics come into town.
06:28Different team.
06:29Different defensive schematics.
06:31So what are you going to be watching for offensively from the Knicks in tonight's game against Boston?
06:36I think it's a three-point shooting.
06:38Mike Brown said, I want more.
06:40That was a good start to have 40 of them on Wednesday.
06:43Now he just wants more.
06:44And I think that let's see if they heed his call to just take more of them.
06:49On Wednesday, they did go through some lulls.
06:52They let the Cavaliers make some runs.
06:54I want to, you know, I'm looking to see how many three-pointers they take.
06:58And also, can they get Jordan Clarkson going off the bench?
07:01You know, he, I think he was two of seven on Wednesday.
07:05Let's see if they can get some of these new guys.
07:07You know, Yabusele didn't score.
07:09Clarkson, I think, had four points.
07:13Ariel Hooporty, who will likely start again at center with Mitchell Robinson out, I think had two points.
07:18Let's see some of those guys get involved.
07:20And if they can, this is a deep team that, you know, they can beat you in a lot of different ways.
07:27Usually when a team is like, oh, we got to get better or we haven't scratched our ceiling,
07:32you kind of look at them and it's like, no, you are who you are.
07:35But with this team, if they can continue to get more out of guys and guys that, again,
07:41that were already here and guys that have just gotten here and still win games,
07:45they are going to be what everybody hoped for when the coaching change was made
07:50and these guys were brought in.
07:52So it's going to be a good time tonight at the Garden.
