00:00Iconic fashion designer Giorgio Armani, the man who redefined red carpet style and brought
00:05understated glamour to Hollywood, has died at the age of 91.
00:10The Armani group confirmed the news on September 4, saying,
00:13Il Signor Armani, as he was always respectfully and admiringly called by employees and collaborators,
00:19passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones.
00:23They added that Armani remained indefatigable to the end, working on his collections and
00:27projects until his final days.
00:30Born in 1934 in Piacenza, Italy, Armani originally studied medicine before serving in the army
00:36in his early 20s.
00:38His first step into fashion came in 1957, working as a window dresser at a department store in
00:43Milan.
00:44By the 1960s, he was designing menswear for Nino Cerruti and freelancing for other houses,
00:50before launching his own namesake brand in 1975.
00:53What started with menswear and womenswear quickly expanded.
00:57Armani introduced accessories, fragrances, jeans, and even film costumes, most famously
01:02outfitting Richard Gere in American Gigolo in 1980.
01:05He also set up shop on Rodeo Drive and began building the connection between fashion and
01:10Hollywood.
01:11In 1978, Diane Keaton became the first star to wear Armani on the Oscars' red carpet,
01:16stepping on stage in an oversized beige blazer to accept her Best Actress award for Annie
01:21Hall.
01:22Over time, Armani won over more A-listers, from Julia Roberts to Jodie Foster to Jessica
01:27Lange and Michelle Pfeiffer, earning Women's Wear Daily's nickname, the Armani Awards,
01:32at the 1990 Oscars.
01:34His sleek, minimalist designs stood in contrast to the extravagant gowns of the 1980s, ushering
01:39in a new era of red carpet style that blended power with elegance.
01:43Armani's legacy grew with Armani Privé, his couture line launched in 2005, which cemented
01:50his place as a red carpet mainstay.
01:52Stars like Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, Nicole Kidman, and Jodie Foster remained loyal to his
01:57timeless, classic looks.
01:59Giorgio Armani didn't just create clothes, he created moments.
02:03For generations of celebrities and fashion lovers alike, wearing Armani was more than a choice,
02:07it was a statement.
