00:00Bombshell illegal gambling scandal overshadowing the start of the NBA season.

00:04It is like something straight out of Hollywood again.

00:07Now, there are two separate but related cases going on at the same time,

00:11and every single new detail is more jaw-dropping than the last.

00:14And they're just outrageous.

00:17First, the Fed say 31 people, including members of the Bonanno Gambino Genovese and Lucchese crime familias,

00:24for those counting, that's four of the big five,

00:26along with NBA Hall of Famer and coach Chauncey Billups,

00:30and at least one former player, Damon Jones, were all involved in illegal poker games.

00:35And I am talking elaborate illegal games.

00:39The NBA stars were allegedly paid by La Cosa Nostra to act as, quote, face cards.

00:45Now, the face cards' job was to attract high rollers called fish to these big money poker games.

00:50The mafiosos allegedly used highly sophisticated tech,

00:54stuff you will not believe, like hacked card shufflers and special contact lenses

00:58that could identify specific cards to rig these games.

01:02Now, I mentioned the name Damon Jones.

01:05He seems to be the bridge between Tony Soprano's Poker Knights and the second scheme,

01:10which involved prop bets and NBA games.

01:13Remember, there are two huge criminal conspiracies allegedly afoot here.

01:18Now, prop bets are wagers within a game that don't depend on the outcome of the game itself.

01:23Think how many points player X is going to score in a given game, who wins the tip-off, stuff like that.

01:28Well, Jones, along with his poker moonlighting, is also accused of tipping off bettors

01:34with non-public information about him, his teammates, and even competitors.

01:38Kind of like insider trading, but for sports.

01:41Along with at least one other player, Terry Rozier,

01:44they would share things like whether or not they were injured

01:46or if they themselves were going to pull out of a game early.

01:49Now, the bettors with the inside track wagered accordingly,

01:52and then they split the winnings with the players who acted as their informants.

01:57Allegedly, as I have to say many times.
