00:00What happened with Kamala?
00:01Her take was really confusing and weird and not good.
00:05And so, mutually agreed that we shouldn't publish it.
00:09Kamala Harris gave an interview before the presidential election that was so confusing and weird
00:14that she and the host agreed not to air it, a social media personality recently revealed.
00:20Kareem Rama is the host of Subway Takes, a popular online series
00:25where guests are asked to admit their favorite hot take.
00:28So what's your take?
00:28I think couples should have separate beds.
00:31In fact, I think they should have separate bedrooms.
00:33Leaf blowers need to be eradicated from the face of the earth.
00:36100% agree.
00:37But after he filmed an episode with the vice president and Democratic presidential hopeful
00:41in the summer of 2024, things went so badly that they decided to bury it.
00:47The presenter opened up to Forbes reporter Stephen Bertoni
00:50about why the clip would never see the light of day.
00:54Her take was that bad?
00:54It was really, really bad and it didn't make any sense.
00:58While Harris' team had told producers in advance that her hot take would be taking a stand
01:03against removing one's shoes on airplanes, Rama said when the interview started, Harris surprised
01:08him with a different hot take, one that he seemingly painfully cringed at while lamenting
01:13that it made no sense.
01:15I can tell you.
01:16Yeah, tell me.
01:16It was bacon, bacon as a spice, bacon as a spice, bacon as a spice.
01:21Rama admitted that the Veep's take was so bizarre that he didn't want to be blamed for her losing
01:26the election as the segment went live, so they killed it.
01:30The interview came as Harris was facing pressure to show her human side and reach new audiences
01:35through appearances with non-traditional media.
01:38While soon-to-be President Trump would go on to sit down with Joe Rogan for an hours-long
01:43discussion in October, Harris infamously refused to meet with the podcast king, perhaps in fear
01:49of unleashing more of the awkward word salads she'd become known for throughout the campaign.
01:55You know, every election cycle we talk about this is the most election of our lifetime.
02:00Lawrence, this one is.
02:02This one is.
02:03And certainly, strengthening our space cooperation would be a part of that agenda, including,
02:10of course, using our space cooperation to think about how we strengthen the economic
02:14prosperity and development of our nations.
02:17Instead of talking with Rogan, Harris opted for what seemed like a safer bet, a traditional
02:22interview with 60 Minutes.
02:24It was a move that would come back to haunt her and CBS, and only added to the scrutiny over
02:30her media appearances during the campaign.
02:32In the now-infamous interview with correspondent Bill Whitaker, Harris was asked why Israeli Prime
02:38Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wasn't listening to the Biden administration and was criticized
02:43for a word-salad answer that aired in a preview clip of the interview on Face the Nation.
02:49On this subject, the aid that we have given Israel allowed Israel to defend itself against 200
02:58ballistic missiles that were just meant to attack the Israelis and the people of Israel.
03:08However, when the same question aired during a primetime special on the network, she was shown
03:12giving a different, more concise response.
03:14Critics at the time accused CBS News of editing her answer to shield the Democratic nominee
03:20from further backlash, leading up to election day, and even sparked President Donald Trump to
03:26file a $20 billion election interference lawsuit against its parent company, Paramount Global.
03:33Earlier this year, the FCC released the full transcript of the interview, revealing that Harris' full,
03:38meandering, 179-word answer was cut down to just 20 words.
03:44The suit was eventually settled in June for what Paramount said was $16 million.
03:50However, the Post reported a side deal between Skydance CEO David Ellison and Trump to run between
03:56$15 million and $20 million in PSAs promoting causes supported by the president.
04:02We did a deal for about $16 million plus $16 million, or maybe more than that in advertising,
04:08Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews, according to a White House Poole report.
04:14Paramount has firmly denied this characterization.
04:17Maybe bacon as a spice wasn't so bad after all.
