00:00The new head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been fired less
00:06than a month after they were sworn in. That's according to the White House on Wednesday.
00:11Susan Menara, as a federal government scientist, was, quote,
00:14not aligned with the president's agenda of making America healthy again,
00:18according to White House spokesman Kush Desai. Menara's attorneys denied she had resigned or
00:23had been fired and said that as a person of integrity and devoted to science, she will not
00:28resign. They also accused Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of
00:34targeting her for refusing to support what they called unscientific directives. Kennedy has made
00:40sweeping changes to vaccine policies since he was appointed, including withdrawing federal
00:45recommendations for COVID shots for pregnant women and healthy children. Menara's was nominated by
00:50President Donald Trump and sworn in on July 31st, but she'd contrasted with Kennedy during her
00:57confirmation hearings, saying she'd not seen evidence linking vaccines with autism. Kennedy
01:03has promoted the discredited claim of such a link. He also fired all members of the CDC's expert vaccine
01:10advisory panel in June and replaced them with hand-picked advisors that included anti-vaccine
01:16activists like him. Also on Wednesday, four senior CDC officials resigned. One of those that quit,
01:24Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Disease, Dimitri Daskalakis,
01:29said that the CDC's vaccination recommendations were putting young Americans and pregnant women at risk.
01:35Health and Human Services did not provide a reason for Menara's departure and did not address the
01:41resignations.
