00:00We Republicans supported making the CDC director Senate confirmed.
00:11It's such an important position that we demanded a role in her or his choosing.
00:18And so part of our responsibility today is to ask ourselves if someone is fired 29 days
00:25after every Republican votes for her, the Senate confirms her, the Secretary said in her swearing
00:33in that she has, quote, unimpeachable scientific credentials, and the President called her an
00:39incredible mother and dedicated public servant, like what happened?
00:45Did we fail?
00:47Was there something we should have done differently?
00:49On the morning of August 25th, Secretary Kennedy demanded two things of me that were inconsistent
01:01with my oath of office and the ethics required of a public official.
01:08He directed me to commit in advance to approving every ACIP recommendation, regardless of the
01:16scientific evidence.
01:20He also directed me to dismiss career officials responsible for vaccine policy without cause.
01:28He said if I was unwilling to do both, I should resign.
01:33I responded that I could not pre-approve recommendations without reviewing the evidence, and I had no
01:39basis to fire scientific experts.
01:44He told me he had already spoken with the White House several times about having me removed.
01:50Secretary Kennedy told me he could not trust me.
01:53I had refused to commit to approving vaccine recommendations without evidence, fire career
01:58officials without cause, or resign, and I had shared my concerns with this committee.
02:04I told the Secretary that if he believed he could not trust me, he could fire me.
02:10The next day I was told I still had my job, but the Secretary's expectations remained approval
02:15of ACIP recommendations and dismissal of career scientists.
02:20I would not commit to that, and I believe it is the true reason I was fired.
02:24The stakes are not theoretical.
02:26We already have seen the largest measles outbreak in more than 30 years, which claimed the lives
02:31of two children.
02:32If vaccine protections are weakened, preventable diseases will return.
02:37I was fired for holding the line on scientific integrity, but that line does not disappear
02:42with me.
02:43It now runs through every parent deciding whether to vaccinate a child, every physician counseling
02:47a patient, and every American who demands accountability.
