00:00The secret is out or about to be out. You are Keith.
00:03How does it feel to know that you don't have to keep this in any longer or
00:08for much longer? And what's it going to be,
00:12what's it going to mean to you to be able to talk about it and say,
00:14I'm part of the DCU.
00:16It's going to be great. I mean, you know, it's, it's,
00:20it's actually been fun not to be able to tell anybody anything, you know,
00:23because it keeps everyone intrigued and everyone guessing, you know,
00:26it's like, cause people know I'm in it, you know,
00:29and people know that I'm doing it and my friends and family know sort of what,
00:35what I had to go through while we filmed it, but no,
00:39it'll be nice for everyone to, to, to get to find out what it is. And, and I,
00:43I, I'm a fan of the show. So I really wanted the surprise to, you know,
00:48to be there. So I did everything I could to not tell anybody or talk.
00:52Have you gotten any outlandish guesses?
00:54Like if people come up to you in the street and been like, you're this person.
00:57And you're like, no, I'm not Batman. Like, yeah, no, I don't know.
01:01I know. I, there was one guy I was asking, but no,
01:05I can't even remember who it was. Cause I don't, I'm not a big like comic book guy.
01:09So I don't know. Like if they say something, I'm like, you know,
01:13unless it's Batman or, you know, one of these big guys,
01:16like I'm not going to know who it is. And everyone assumes, you know,
01:20because it's James Gunn, you're going to probably be some obscure character that
01:25he's pulled out of the universe. And he's, you know,
01:27which is exactly what happened.
01:29This is a reunion for you and James.
01:31What did it mean to come back and get to work with him again?
01:35Well, I mean,
01:36James is incredibly loyal to his actors that he hires, you know,
01:40they're, they come as friends and his family, you know,
01:43like there's a reason that he puts the same people in stuff over and over
01:46again. For me, it was, I've known James for 20 years and,
01:52and he's always been incredibly kind. You know, I've,
01:55I auditioned for something in guardians.
01:57He wrote me a lovely note saying, you know, how great I was,
02:00but they just went in another direction. And I just, for Superman, like it was,
02:06it was, you know,
02:07I never felt like I wasn't going to eventually work with him, you know,
02:10but I didn't know what this part would be. And, you know, that was,
02:15that was great to get this part.
02:17I also knew Steve Agee from Brightburn. I knew Freddie from,
02:22we did 13 hours together 10 years ago. And I knew Jen, obviously.
02:27So the only people I didn't know was Danielle and John and Danielle and I went
02:31to the same, you know, we went to Juilliard at different times,
02:33but we immediately bonded over that experience. And so it was really like kind of
02:38coming into a family, like, you know,
02:41James is so good at creating an environment,
02:45a safety net for us all to, to fail, you know,
02:49like he allows us to improv. He also improvs with us.
02:52Like he sits there with a microphone and a speaker where all the cast and crew
02:57would get to hear and he throws out lines and he's laughing. And, you know,
03:00so we get to do these things and, and if it doesn't work,
03:04it doesn't matter. Cause we can just, we'll, we won't use it. So, you know,
03:08it's, that is such a joy to be able to work in that environment like that.
03:14There's just a level of trust he has with his actors too, that, you know,
03:18you're, you're, you're, you know, you're able to roll with it, you know?
03:21And, and so it, it, it was a joy to get back, get back to work with him.
03:26Although this was the first time James actually directed me. So that was,
03:30that was fun.
03:31How did knowing that your version or another version of your character was dead
03:36in a different realm, kind of inform your, your choices. And as an actor, or,
03:41you know, thinking about how many infinite portal realms there are,
03:45did you ever think what is Keith doing in another realm at this moment?
03:50Well,
03:50that other stuff you can't really think about because you can only deal with your
03:53reality and what your reality is, is this is the father you have.
03:57This is the home you guys are living in this, you know,
04:01there are heroes in this society, like dealing with this, Chris,
04:06this Chris is a troubled Chris, you know,
04:08as you find out as the season goes on in his own way,
04:12that's different than, you know, the other Chris of reality.
04:16So all you can do is play the circumstances that are presented in front of you.
04:21Um, I mean, the infinite possibilities of DCU by creating those portals is, uh,
04:27it's pretty fun. And, you know,
04:29who knows what will happen and where you might end up and show up. Um,
04:34cause I think that's part of what, you know,
04:36James is creating here with this.
04:37The only things I knew that I had to have,
04:40they wanted someone as big or bigger than John.
04:42And they wanted somebody who had blue eyes,
04:45who looked a little bit like the kid who was in season one.
04:49And that's pretty much all we had to, to go on.
04:53And then everything else James created.
04:55Can you talk to me about, you know, building that relationship,
04:57that brotherly relationship with John,
04:59the relationship with John. I mean, John is,
05:02is such a dream to work with. He's such a gentleman.
05:05He's such a pro. Uh, he's very, you know,
05:10very kind and, and, uh, and giving like,
05:14we had to do a lot of very intimate scenes, you know,
05:16where he had to get pretty emotional and it was, um, you know,
05:19those are, those are intimate scenes for, for, you know,
05:23for the, the nature of what that Chris is dealing with. Um,
05:29and, uh, it was, it was really amazing to watch John's work in this.
05:34Cause I, I don't know that he's been asked to do this type of type of stuff
05:39in roles that he's played in the past. So, you know, uh,
05:43I think audiences are going to love it. You know,
05:45that's the beauty of a James Gunn project is that you have this huge range,
05:50right.
05:50Of this really raunchy comedy and silly things and then very touching,
05:55tender moments. And,
05:56and he fills in this backstory and makes this anti-hero someone you actually care
06:01about where you're like, you know, uh, it's,
06:04it's remarkable what he's able to do.
