00:00You know, I was in the moment, so I understood everything that was going on.
00:06You know, there were some surprises, I can say that, but, you know, me being in that moment...
00:14Terrence Bud Crawford has finally spoken out about the shocking incident that happened just hours after his victory parade in Omaha.
00:23The newly crowned, undisputed super middleweight champion explained how police stopped him at gunpoint.
00:30Even though the situation didn't call for it, Crawford said he has plenty of video proof showing that the officers overreacted for no reason.
00:57Crawford.
00:58It was crazy.
01:00I was the driver.
01:01I wasn't drunk.
01:02There was no issue at all with the stop.
01:04But pointing guns at us while we were fully cooperating?
01:07That didn't make any sense.
01:09I don't know if they just wanted to ruin our day, but it was completely unnecessary.
01:13I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't party, really.
01:16You've never drank or smoked, right?
01:17I don't do nothing.
01:18That's crazy.
01:20I'm just real chill.
01:21Crawford also revealed that he spoke directly with Omaha Mayor John Ewing Jr., who is a former police officer.
01:28The mayor assured him that an internal investigation would begin right away.
01:32Because of that, Crawford said he decided to hold back some of his video evidence until the investigation is finished and justice is served.
01:40Crawford, knowing everything that was going on when it was happening, it was like everything just slowed down to me at that.
01:47Crawford.
01:48We've got the video evidence, but we'll release it once the investigation is done.
01:52I believe there should be consequences in cases like this.
01:56The only reason you're hearing about it is because I'm famous.
01:59Ordinary people go through this every day and nothing is done.
02:02After this interview, Crawford posted on Instagram to celebrate his birthday with the caption,
02:07They say 38 is old, but I tell them I'm aging like fine wine.
02:12Chapter 38 underway.
02:1538, 38, 38.
02:1838, 38, 38.
02:20It's a blessing.
02:22Hey, listen, I appreciate all y'all for coming out and celebrating with me from the parade to the park.
02:33Interestingly, Crawford's head of security, Qasim Shabazz, was also in the car.
02:38He ended up saying even more about the stop than Crawford himself.
02:42Shabazz explained,
02:43A cop came to my window, another to Bud's window.
02:46I know the protocol.
02:47The officers said while Bud was reaching down to grab his license and registration,
02:51they spotted a gun near his feet.
02:54That's when they told him to get out, and he did.
02:57Then they put him in handcuffs while they investigated.
02:59This is what they was doing.
03:02Comfort.
03:03Like I'm saying, I mean, anybody that's being held and down and disrespected wants to prove everybody wrong.
03:10I mean, if you're a real champion, you know what I'm saying?
03:13The three other passengers in the car were also ordered out at gunpoint and handcuffed.
03:23Police later reported finding two guns inside, but admitted everyone in the car was legally allowed to carry.
03:30Shabazz, however, gave a different account.
03:32He said Crawford never reached for his license or registration at all.
03:37According to him, Bud told them straight up,
03:40No, I don't have it on me.
03:42I left everything at home.
03:44So there was no reason for him to reach for anything.
03:48Shabazz admitted both he and Crawford were armed,
03:51but that they followed Nebraska law and immediately informed the officers.
03:56He said that's when things escalated.
03:58Bud told them,
03:59I have a firearm, too.
04:01That's when the cop just went off.
04:04He started yelling,
04:05Hands up!
04:06Get out!
04:07Don't reach!
04:08But there was never a gun in sight.
04:10We all thought we were going to die, man.
04:13In the end, Crawford was hit with a reckless driving charge,
04:16even though Shabazz said they were pulled over for speeding.
04:20Ayo, that's embarrassing.
04:21By Omaha law enforcement,
04:23that you were arrested,
04:25held on gunpoint,
04:26Terrence Bud Crawford?
04:27After having a parade in Omaha?
04:30After receiving the keys to the city?
04:33Huh?
04:34Ayo, that cop gotta be some hater, bro.
04:37Terrence Bud Crawford,
04:39the undisputed super middleweight champion,
04:41found himself in a disturbing situation
04:43only hours after Omaha had celebrated his historic victory over Canelo Alvarez,
04:48with a city parade and a birthday.
04:51Party in his honor.
04:52When police stopped his vehicle late that night
04:54and escalated the encounter to a level that left Crawford,
04:58his security team and passengers shaken.
05:01According to police reports,
05:03three other passengers traveling with Crawford
05:05were ordered out of the car at gunpoint
05:07and placed in handcuffs while officers investigated,
05:10later stating they had discovered two firearms inside the vehicle,
05:13though they admitted that every individual present was legally permitted to carry.
05:18Crawford's head of security,
05:20Qasem Shabazz,
05:21gave a different version of events,
05:23saying that contrary to the police account,
05:25Crawford never reached for his license or registration at all,
05:28as officers had claimed,
05:30and had in fact told them directly,
05:32that he had left everything at home,
05:34meaning there was no reason for him to be seen reaching for documents.
05:37Shabazz explained that both he and Crawford acknowledged being armed,
05:41and did so in full compliance with Nebraska law,
05:44notifying the officers immediately.
05:46But that once Crawford stated he had a firearm,
05:49one officer suddenly lost control,
05:51raising his voice and shouting aggressively for Crawford to put his hands up,
05:55get out of the car,
05:56and not make any moves.
05:57Even though there was no visible gun in Crawford's hands or within reach,
06:01Shabazz recalled the situation growing so tense and unpredictable
06:04that everyone in the car
06:05genuinely believed they might not survive the encounter.
06:09And in the end,
06:11Crawford was charged with reckless driving despite
06:13Shabazz's insistence that the stop was actually made on the claim of speeding.
06:18Crawford himself later raised the point that the stop was unjustified,
06:22saying that the officers had no radar to measure his speed
06:24and that he had proof on camera of a police,
06:27officer admitting he lacked the radar equipment to verify any speeding claim.
06:31However,
06:32Shabazz mentioned that this video evidence
06:34has not yet been shared with the media.
06:36Once Omaha's Mayor John Ewing Jr. learned of the incident,
06:40he and his chief of staff Tom Warren reached out directly to Crawford,
06:43who expressed his desire for a full investigation into the matter.
06:47Mayor Ewing then contacted Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmatterer,
06:50who authorized an internal affairs investigation
06:52to determine exactly what had occurred during the traffic stop.
06:55Mayor Ewing publicly emphasized that their responsibility
06:58was not to jump to conclusions,
07:00but to gather facts,
07:01present them to the community,
07:04and remain fully transparent about every step of the process.
07:07The Omaha Police Department,
07:09when asked for direct interviews by local media,
07:11declined to provide further comment beyond a written statement
07:14and confirmed that the investigation remained ongoing.
07:17In a Facebook post,
07:19Mayor Ewing acknowledged the seriousness of the incident
07:21and highlighted the importance of maintaining trust
07:25between law enforcement officers
07:26and the community they serve.
07:29Adding that Police Chief Schmatterer
07:30had assured him of a thorough and complete investigation,
07:34one that Ewing said he would fully support
07:36and ensure was transparent for the public.
07:38He admitted that hearing about the incident was heartbreaking,
07:41especially since it had capped off
07:43what had otherwise been
07:44a joyful day celebrating Crawford's accomplishments.
07:47And he urged the city to remember the day as one of pride,
07:50while also committing to seeking the truth.
07:53Ewing stressed that every person living in Omaha,
07:56regardless of status,
07:57deserved to feel safe, respected, and protected.
08:01This stark contrast between the citywide celebration
08:03earlier in the day and the tense,
08:05confrontation later at night
08:06made the incident all the more troubling.
08:08Just hours before the stop,
08:10Crawford had been honored in a parade downtown
08:12after making history in Las Vegas by defeating Canelo.
08:16Alvarez and becoming the first male boxer in history
08:18to unify three different divisions.
08:21His record at that point stood at a flawless 42 wins
08:24with zero losses, including 31 knockouts,
08:27and Omaha residents had turned out in large numbers
08:30to cheer their champion.
08:32That evening, Crawford's birthday was celebrated
08:34at a live music venue not far from where
08:36the traffic stop eventually occurred,
08:38marking his 38th year with festivities,
08:40recognition, and community pride.
08:43During the weekend of celebration,
08:44Crawford proudly displayed his latest prize,
08:47a gleaming $188,000 gold ring belt,
08:50which symbolized his triumph over Alvarez,
08:53and later spoke about how he had been reflecting
08:55on his achievements at his mother's home,
08:57where he keeps all of his championship belts.
09:00He explained that this new belt in particular
09:02would remain a treasured keepsake for him,
09:05regardless of whatever future titles he might capture.
09:08Among the many tributes Crawford received
09:10following his win,
09:11one stood out in particular.
09:12Legendary rapper Eminem sent a personal video message,
09:16congratulating him on the September 13th victory,
09:19joking that Crawford had used all of his tricks
09:21to defeat Canelo,
09:22then sincerely praising him for achieving greatness,
09:25calling it goat stuff,
09:27and saluting him as a champion who deserved every accolade.
09:30Crawford's performance against Alvarez
09:32was remarkable not only because he had moved up
09:34two full weight classes to take on the Mexican superstar,
09:38but also because he managed to completely neutralize Canelo's offense
09:41with speed, agility, and technical brilliance,
09:45proving that he could carry his skill set and power
09:47into higher divisions without missing a beat.
09:50The win was widely considered
09:51one of the most significant of his career
09:53and cemented his legacy in boxing history.
09:56At the Omaha celebration,
09:57several big names from the boxing world,
10:00including Claressa Shields,
10:02Shocker Stevenson,
10:03and his longtime coaches Red Bomac and Davis,
10:05joined him to mark the occasion,
10:08though not everyone could attend in person.
10:10Still, the message from Eminem,
10:12which was played during the event,
10:13became a highlight.
10:15As the rapper praised Crawford for his historic achievement
10:17and expressed pride in his success,
10:20the joy of these moments
10:21made the late-night confrontation with police
10:23seem even more jarring.
10:25With the image of the city's world champion,
10:27fresh off one of the greatest victories in boxing,
10:30being pulled from his car at gunpoint,
10:32handcuffed,
10:33and charged under disputed circumstances,
10:36the whole incident sparked conversations
10:38about policing practices,
10:40accountability,
10:41and the treatment of even high-profile figures like Crawford.
10:44While raising awareness of the fact
10:45that many ordinary citizens face
10:47similar situations without the same level
10:50of public attention or support,
10:52Crawford himself pointed out
10:53that the only reason the story gained traction
10:55was because of his fame,
10:57stressing that countless others deal
10:58with such unnecessary escalations on a daily basis,
11:01without justice ever being served.
11:04As the investigation moves forward,
11:06Crawford has chosen not to release
11:07some of his video evidence
11:08until the process is complete,
11:10saying he wants to allow the authorities
11:12to do their work
11:13in hopes that meaningful accountability
11:15will follow.
11:16Mayor Ewing, meanwhile,
11:18has promised transparency
11:19and emphasized that his administration
11:21will take the matter seriously,
11:23balancing the need to honor Crawford's achievements
11:25while also addressing the troubling way
11:28the celebration ended.
11:30Ultimately,
11:30the story captures both the highest highs
11:33and the lowest lows of a single.
11:36Day in Crawford's life
11:37from being celebrated as Omaha's hero,
11:40a 3D Vision unified champion
11:41with an undefeated 42-0 record,
11:44to being treated with suspicion and aggression
11:47by the very police force
11:48meant to serve his community,
11:50and it leaves both supporters and city.
11:52Officials awaiting the results
11:54of the internal investigation
11:56that could determine
11:56whether the officers involved
11:59face consequences for their actions
12:01or whether this incident
12:02becomes yet another example of
12:04mistrust between law enforcement
12:06and the people they police.
