Japan's new prime minister, Takaichi Sanae, has promised to boost defense spending two years earlier than originally planned. She made the remarks in her first policy speech since taking office, where she also pledged to work with the US to boost deterrence.

00:00Japan's new Prime Minister, Takahichi Sanae, has given her first policy speech since taking office,
00:06pledging to boost defense spending earlier than planned.
00:12Our nation must take the initiative in radically strengthening its defense capabilities.
00:18To this end, we will act to bring forward the implementation of the 2% of GDP defense spending level
00:25within the current financial year set out in the National Security Strategy
00:30in conjunction with the supplementary budgetary measures.
00:35The original target was fiscal 2027.
00:39On the foreign policy front, Takahichi promised to work with the U.S. to raise deterrence
00:43ahead of the meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump next week.
00:47And she spoke of the challenges from neighbors, including China,
00:50but said that Tokyo must build a stable and constructive relationship with Beijing through dialogue.
