00:00Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party and the Japan Innovation Party have signed a coalition agreement
00:06paving the way for Senator Kaichi to become the country's first female Prime Minister.
00:12The last-minute deal was finalised just one day before the lower house vote on her appointment.
00:20According to the party, the deal includes strict timelines and detailed policy goals,
00:25among them a proposal to cut the number of lawmakers by 10%.
00:30The new alliance gives the two parties a combined 231 seats in the lower house, just too short of a majority.
00:38This virtually guarantees Takaichi enough support to win Tuesday's parliamentary vote to choose Japan's next Prime Minister.
00:46In the event of a run-off, she would only need a majority of votes cast, not a full majority of members.
00:52Even so, Takaichi will still need cooperation from other opposition groups to pass key legislation,
00:59including the upcoming supplementary budget.
