00:00Sylvania, pioneer in light, sight, and sound invites you to join the fun as we
00:07play America's number one party game, Beat the Clock, starring America's number
00:12one clock watcher, Bud Cunyer!
00:15Thank you very much ladies and gentlemen, welcome once again to Beat the Clock, a show
00:24where you can have a time of your life playing against time for big-time prizes.
00:28We have a couple of contestants from last week here tonight who had a chance to practice
00:32their stunt all week.
00:33How are you there?
00:34Oh, I'm pretty good.
00:35Nice to have you back.
00:36It was Mr. and Mrs. Grieger, that's right.
00:38Do you have your card there Mr. Grieger?
00:40Well it's nice to have you back.
00:41You live in Baltimore, Maryland.
00:42Did you come up specially for the show tonight?
00:44Oh yes.
00:45Did you practice the stunt at home?
00:46A little bit.
00:47Only a little bit?
00:48We couldn't get any right-sized pillows.
00:50Oh, we couldn't get any right-sized pillows, well it did involve pillows, you're perfectly
00:53right.
00:54But we'll see just how soft a proposition it'll be for you in just a few minutes, but...
00:58Hey!
00:59What's this?
01:00Looks like somebody's giving Bill Shipley the eye.
01:03Let's take a look.
01:05Well, if you'd like to give your eyes a real treat, take a look at Sylvania's newest television
01:10first, Halo Light.
01:12Now here's the greatest television development since the big screen picture tube.
01:16Halo Light.
01:17It's a soft frame of light around the screen to reduce that sharp contrast between the brilliant
01:22picture and the darker outside surroundings.
01:25And you'll notice, too, that Halo Light makes the picture look larger and more lifelike.
01:29You look for Halo Light on Sylvania's new Golden Jubilee models, the finest television sets ever
01:35built at any price.
01:37So visit your Sylvania dealer and see those movie clear pictures that are held rock steady
01:42by exclusive triple lock and hear that studio clear sound on a wide range of table and console
01:49and combination models, each of which is individually styled.
01:53And then you'll know that for the most in television enjoyment and television value, it's always Sylvania.
02:02And remember, only Sylvania has Halo Light.
02:08That's so right.
02:09All right, Mr. and Mrs. Grieger.
02:10Now, let's see.
02:11You have three children, don't you?
02:12That's right.
02:13You want to wave to him?
02:14Yes.
02:15You want to wave to him?
02:16Go on.
02:17Wave to him.
02:18Right in here.
02:19Get that out of the way quick, and I'll wave to my three, too, and then we're all set
02:20to start off.
02:21Come on back over here.
02:22By the way, I want to tell you something.
02:23Incidentally, tonight, you are going to be playing not only for yourselves, but, you know,
02:26the community chess campaign is on now in most localities, or will be starting in the
02:29next few days.
02:30So, Sylvania, for every clock that you and every contestant beats tonight, is going to send
02:34a contribution in your name to the community chess.
02:37See?
02:38So you're working sort of a double-edged sword here tonight.
02:40All right, come on over here and take your positions.
02:41I think you were next to me, weren't you, Miss Grieger?
02:43Yes.
02:44You were next to him and next to me.
02:45I mean, don't try to pull away.
02:46All right, Betty, would you put the pillow between the cheeks?
02:49Remember, this was kind of a cheek-to-cheek proposition.
02:51Now, Mr. Grieger, remember, you can't use your hands at any time.
02:54Remember that?
02:55And, Mrs. Grieger, you can only use your left hand to go along here and pick up pillow after
02:59pillow, placing them next to this one between your cheek and the pillow, or between your husband's,
03:03I don't care which end you pile them from, until you wind up with all those other five pillows,
03:07and you're standing cheek-to-cheek, holding them just with your cheeks.
03:10Do you understand the problem?
03:11All right, I'm going to take a look at our Sylvania clock and tell you how many seconds we have.
03:14Fifty-five seconds, that's practically the limit.
03:17So, okay?
03:18Do you understand your problem now?
03:19Yeah.
03:20You're all set.
03:21All right.
03:22That's the 21st century.
03:23That's the 21st century.
03:24Good!
03:25Good!
03:26Good!
03:27Good!
03:28Good!
03:29Take it easy.
03:30Don't look too fast.
03:31You've got a lot of pressure there.
03:32Stop the clock now get these three straight again come on get these three straight you
04:00Can use your hands to get these three straight come on because these three you didn't drop see
04:03I'm going to put these right in front of you and start again from here here
04:07Here are two more right there you can give me that a little bit of advantage. Are you ready?
04:30That was too close all right boy I tell you that's kind of tough you know because they keep squeezing out there and popping out
04:47See and you also want a contribution for the community chest now step back on in there
04:51Because I want to make a little quick announcement to everybody that's watching with us tonight
04:55This from now on this was a carryover stunt from last week, but from here on through the show tonight with all our contestants
05:00All our stunts are gonna be sort of a little Halloween show
05:02They're all based on stunts. We have done before all actually stunts
05:05We have done before on the show and other weeks over the last year or so and also you'll find them in our little
05:11Beat the clock party game booklet if you haven't got one be sure to write Sylvania and get one and you can have a lot of fun
05:16If you're having a Halloween party, so watch these stunts tonight. They may give you some ideas
05:19Okay, now comes the sweet part, you know sweets to the sweet and that's the way we think it should always be in a happily married life
05:25And now your kids gonna love this come on over here with me both of you if you will to our ice cream parlor
05:30Did you ever make a sundaes at home?
05:32Oh, yes, we have well come over I want to see how good your technique is
05:37Now if you just step right up there you can become a soda jerk for just a moment and you sir
05:41You are going to have the privilege of having the finest seat in the house for this particular stuff. That's great. So what's the matter?
05:47Oh, that's fine. Don't sound like you trust me. Would you put that a shower cap on, please?
05:53It's to keep your hair out of your eyes you understand that's all it's for nothing else in the world
05:58That's the idea now if you will just lie down there with your feet out that way on your back
06:02You'll have the best view of this whole thing. I never had a Sunday like that. Oh, you said it you didn't all right
06:08If you will please mr. Greger
06:10That's the idea this that's it now keep your legs flat if you possibly can and here's the special little Sunday glass you see there it is
06:17Now I'm going to ask you to hold that in your teeth. There you are sir
06:20Now your job is is Greger is simply to fill that Sunday glass and make the Sunday now here is a scoop
06:26And there is some ice cream now you must keep dropping ice cream balls until you get one in the cup you understand
06:37We have a container of chocolate syrup for you to go on top of the sun
06:40As soon as you have the ice cream well covered with chocolate syrup the finishing touch
06:44Whipped cream on top of the chocolate syrup, you know how to work those little ready with things there
06:50You just push that little nozzle to the side either way point it down and push it either way
06:53Do you understand all right? I'm going to take a look at our sylvania clock with you and see how many seconds we have
06:5835 seconds to finish that Sunday. Are you ready? Go
07:02Get a scoop there

07:53I enjoyed it
07:54I'm afraid you did
07:55All right
07:56Would you step up on the far end of that little platform there, please?
07:59Because now you've won your way through to the jackpot clock
08:01And now you carry on for the family Grieger alone
08:04In back of this curtain is our big magnetic board, our jackpot board
08:07With all of the words on it of a famous saying or quotation
08:09They're all out of order
08:10Now what you have to do is move them around on that board
08:13So they spell out from left to right, you know, regular sentence form
08:16The famous saying or quotation we're after
08:18Now you have 20 seconds from the time I say go

09:54From Manchester, New Hampshire
09:56Ray Millan?
09:58Right
09:59How do you spell this?
10:00Oh, M-E-L-A-H-N
10:01Millan
10:02I beg your pardon, sound like Ray Millan for a minute
10:03Would you step around the other side of your wife?
10:05I like to have the gals next to me
10:06You don't mind, do you?
10:07Not at all
10:08How long have you been married?
10:09We've been married almost a year
10:10Almost a year
10:11Well, it looks like it's been a happy year for the two of you
10:13What do you do for a living, Ray?
10:14I'm a special agent for the Air Force
10:16Special agent for the Air Force?
10:18Right
10:19What does that mean, may I ask?
10:20I am a member of the Office of Special Investigations
10:22It's the same as ONI and CID
10:24Oh, I see
10:25Well, do you actually, do you have a, is this a civilian job
10:27Or are you actually in the Air Force?
10:29Some of us are civilians and some are in the Air Force
10:31And which are you?
10:32That is confidential
10:33Oh, I beg your pardon, lost my head
10:35If you strike it out
10:36Turn your sets off for just a minute
10:37Sorry, boy
10:38Okay
10:39Mr. and Mrs.
10:40I'd be glad to tell you if I could
10:41I know you would, I'm sorry
10:42I didn't mean to pry, believe me
10:43Alright, so now we have a little, a little stunt for you two
10:46And it's a special little stunt tonight
10:47I'll tell you why
10:48If you do it the way we first have it set up
10:51You will go right through our $100 and our $200 clocks
10:55Move right up to the jackpot clock with no stunt in between
10:57You understand?
10:58If you fail, we'll set the clock back
11:00Give you another try at it under other conditions
11:02But you'll then just be trying for the $100 clock
11:04You understand?
11:05Gonna give you a real bonus try at it though
11:07See if you can jump right through two clocks, okay?
11:09Swell
11:10Alright, gonna see how well you two cooperate in your married life
11:12Come on over here with me if you will
11:13Now, Mrs. Milan, if you'll stand on this side of me facing your husband
11:16And Mr. Milan, if you'll stand right here facing your wife
11:19That's the idea
11:20I'm going to ask Betty to blindfold each of you
11:23That's it, just slide it down so she doesn't hurt you there
11:25Pull it down and play fair with us and tell us when it's on good and snug
11:29So you can't even peek out from underneath
11:31You want to slide this down here a little bit
11:32I think it'll hold better
11:33Now, let's kind of straighten it around there
11:34How's that?
11:35You can't see a thing, huh?
11:37Blind as a bat
11:38How about you, Ray?
11:39Same here
11:40All snug in there too, huh?
11:41Yes, sir
11:42Alright, fine
11:43Now, Madeline is going to bring out some various items
11:45And Betty is going to deposit some of them on the floor between the two of you
11:48And Betty and Madeline are going to put boxing gloves on each of you
11:51Now, before you get too apprehensive about this
11:53And think that we've given you a chance to have a slugfest with each other
11:56It's not bad at all
11:58Let me tell you what it involves
11:59On the floor between you are some garments
12:02They're male garments
12:03Now, what happens is
12:05You have got to see to it that they all get on your husband
12:08Say, we should have taken his coat off, I think, Betty
12:10Let's come back over here and slip this off
12:12And he can
12:13You take his jacket over there and hang it on the stand, if you will, please
12:15He takes his wallet out of the coat
12:16This guy's no fool
12:19Alright, sir
12:20Would you put this glove back on again?
12:21Here's this one
12:22And what you're going to have to do is
12:24Help your husband get into these garments that are on the floor
12:27There are three in number
12:29And you've just got to work them out with your sense of feel
12:31Slide your hand well in there
12:33Because you're going to have to use your thumb
12:34Well, that's what you'll have to find out for yourself
12:36Without removing
12:37And I'm going to tell you how many seconds you have
12:39On our Sylvania clock
12:4055 seconds
12:41Now, don't forget if you do it
12:43You'll go right through
12:44They're right on the floor between you
12:46And here you two are
12:47Reach your hands out
12:48There you are
12:49Okay

13:42Oh, with anything?
13:45Oh, I'm sorry, you didn't do it.
13:46Now, don't take your blindfolds off.
13:49Don't take your blindfolds off,
13:50but slip your boxing gloves off.
13:52You didn't do it on the bonus conditions.
13:54You sure were paw in the air.
13:56Special investigator indeed.
14:00Now, wait a minute.
14:01Now, you have the same three articles on the floor between.
14:03You're gonna put the clock back again to 55 seconds,
14:05but now you're just trying for the $100 clock, okay?
14:09Now, you've just got the blindfolds on,
14:10and I'll tell you that the articles are
14:12a coat, a vest, and a pair of pants.
14:14Are you ready?
14:15Go.
14:17Come on, get them on.
14:18This must be the pants.

15:23why slide along on back here because we have lots more in store for you that means of course

21:09thank you very much Roxanne mr. mrs. George Rowland hi miss Rowland
21:11don't be so nervous there now George nice to have you here with us you're from Haddon Heights New Jersey how long have you been married
21:19a year this month a year this month and and what do you do mr. Rowland I'm a gym teacher a gym teacher over where in the Haddon Heights school
21:28Delaware Township public school what sort of things do you teach there well it's just a recreation program I have grades one to eight inclusive
21:31oh you've got the little fellas all the way up well you have to have a lot more patience with that incidentally you know this is our all Halloween show I told everybody before that all the stunts we've done tonight we're doing tonight we have done before and suggestions for a little Halloween games at home on Halloween if you're giving parties now I want to see again how well balanced the two of you are this is a little similar to something we did before tonight so maybe you won't find it too hard come on over here with me you're trying now for the $100
22:01clock mrs. Rowland if you'll stand on that side over there mr. Rowland you stay on this side and I want to show you what it is you have to do face each other if you will and just as a slight example if you walk forward until you are holding this between your two tummies together just come forward that's the idea now that's the way I'm going to start you off see okay now stand back so I can illustrate what it is you start with that box between your two stomachs see then one by one when I say go you start picking boxes and you two one at a time and slide them in between your stomach and the side of the box that's next to you constantly moving away
22:31from each other of course until you have all of these shoe boxes supported between your two stomachs I warn you be careful because one little bit out of line and point the whole business goes if it does we'll pile them back up here and you start again okay all right now come together let's take a look at our Sylvania clock course and see how many seconds you have 55 seconds okay between your tummies all right are you ready go
22:53you go
23:00you go
23:06go
23:07go too far
23:11go
23:13go
23:15go
23:16go
23:19go
23:21go
23:23go
23:24go
23:33go
23:35go
23:37go
23:38I had one another pop you go
23:39as well I wasn't a bad one you see that was showing that you two are very well balanced people that shows that the give and take in your married life must be one that's fairly simple and of course you've won another contribution for the community chest
23:46another contribution for the community chess which was sent there by Sylvania in your name for each
23:50clock as we go along in our halloween show well now we're going to find out what your problem is
23:54on the $200 clock very shortly but first of all let's take a look at something you may never have
24:01seen as explained for you now by bill shipley maybe you haven't bud because right now you're
24:06looking at the underside of a television set and every one of those coils and condensers the
24:11resistors and transformers in that maze of wire is essential to the reception of either picture
24:17or sound now those are 300 sources of possible trouble so it takes a real expert to isolate and
24:24correct that trouble if something should go wrong with your television set you know becoming a
24:31television repair specialist entails long training and it takes constant study to keep up with the
24:36ever-changing circuit designs of a thousand or so different sets but even skill and knowledge are
24:42not enough because good television service is a permanent business that requires a stock of over
24:48600 different parts and tubes so you can see that when something goes wrong with your television set
24:55and it needs a bit of attention you need to find a qualified service specialist like the man who
25:01displays this sylvania radio and television service sign for at that sign you're going to find experts
25:07who have the latest last word up to the minute sylvania test and repair equipment and those fine
25:13rugged long lasting sylvania tubes so the man at this sign depends on sylvania for quality materials
25:20believe me you can depend on him for expert service at really fair prices
25:25right you are bill and thank you very much job well done as always mr mrs roland through the 100
25:32hour clock you've gone you're going now into the 200 clock and this should be something that you will
25:36both enjoy very much so if you will both come over here with me and mrs roland if you will take a
25:43position right in between these two little tables you notice there's a little sort of paper plate on each
25:47one mr roland you come on over here now you have to make a little short trip this time here are a whole
25:53bunch of pencils you see whole supply of little short pencils now what you have to do with them is comparatively simple
26:00you have to take these pencils one by one and transfer any three of them one at a time to your wife
26:06and she has to deposit them on that plate over there when you have transferred three of them over there
26:10we'll stop the clock and you'll beat the clock simple enough isn't it would you step back just a
26:15little way so i can show everybody how many seconds you have from the time i say go 50 seconds to transport three
26:20pencils now come back over a little closer if you will you are to meet her halfway and you him halfway
26:25because you're the only one that can use your hands you must pick up the pencil like this place it
26:30between your nose and your lips like this and then you transfer it to your wife like this
26:37i think i'll do it you go on i'll show you the idea though let's see if you got a hooker there hey boy
26:43now let's see if you can too come on get a hold of it there that's the girl that's all you have to do with
26:47three of them get them over there you can't use your hands in any way you can only use it to
26:50pick the pencil up and put it between your nose and your lip you got the idea okay remember 50 seconds
26:55go wait a minute here to meet you
27:08one more
27:17i was willing to go right on and demonstrate it for you of course the funniest thing you don't have
27:41the vantage point i had looking out there in the audience everybody that i can see were all going
27:44like this see and i'll bet my wife was too all right mr mrs roland you're going to move up now
27:51till we try for the jackpot so it's all yours you step up over there if you will please mr roland you
27:55can't help in any way now so you stand on that end of that platform you just got to stand by and just
28:00hope you understand back of this curtain is our big magnetic board with all the words of uh of a famous
28:05saying or quotation they're all out of order you move them around until they're in order reading from left to
28:09right goodness gracious this has never happened before do you know what's happened we used up all our
28:14seconds and minutes just before the jackpot try now let's see you come from haddon heights new jersey
28:18can you come back next week for a try at our jackpot i don't know it's pretty rough we got a day off that's
28:25the reason we were able to you've got a day off to come over well i'll tell you uh uh we'll we'll have
28:31it i don't know i'll consult with the judges just a minute what did you say sir give them the set you win the
28:37television set all right congratulations i'm sorry you couldn't come back you're a really good sport
28:44ladies and gentlemen before we go tonight

29:07current colliers you'll see some pictures of roxanne this is bud collier speaking for sylvania
29:12hoping that next time may be your time to beat the clock good night everybody
