New Zealand issues rare red warnings due to destructive spring storm

New Zealand's weather agency issues rare red wind warnings and officials declare a state of emergency in the Canterbury region as a powerful spring storm brings destructive gales and heavy rain to the South Island and lower North Island on Oct. 23, 2025. Flights in and out of Wellington, the capital, and Christchurch, in Canterbury, have all been canceled, some train services have been suspended and several government facilities such as libraries have been closed. New Zealand Transport Agency also shut several roads and there have been significant power outages. A red warning is only issued in the most extreme events and people have been asked, where possible, to shelter in place, and government buildings such as libraries and parks have been closed in areas worst affected.

00:30It hurts to be fair but we're mindful that the house is still there and the family is safe and that's really what counts most.
