The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) is upgrading the Malaysian Tsunami Early Warning System (SAATNM) to speed up earthquake and tsunami alerts, the Dewan Rakyat was told on Thursday (Oct 23).
Acting Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said alerts are currently issued within eight minutes of detection and disseminated through multiple channels to relevant agencies and the public.
He said the 24-hour system, managed by the National Earthquake and Tsunami Operations Centre, is supported by 80 local seismic stations and 323 international ones that provide real-time data.
