00:00Simple advice that could save lives. Helm Town Hall has invited local people to a training
00:14session to teach them what to do in case of attack.
00:18They often have certain preconceived ideas that are quite far from reality. But that's
00:23what these meetings are for, to get things straight.
00:27The meeting is also a forum for discussion, where residents can voice their complaints
00:32with the memory of September's air raid alerts on everyone's mind.
00:42Halina, meanwhile, says she heard the sirens as she was making supper, but didn't know
00:47how to react. She sees this training as indispensable.
00:52We all need to get informed about how to keep ourselves safe if necessary, though we hope
00:57it will never be necessary.
01:00Many here have got one major question on their minds.
01:06It's a touchy topic. Helm has got no underground spaces suitable for protecting people from
01:10aerial attack. The council is assessing whether the basements of certain public buildings could
01:15be turned into shelters.
01:19The head of this primary school had never previously visited the network of underground corridors
01:23arranged under the school during the Cold War. In case of attack, she'll be responsible
01:28for getting the children to a safe place.
01:30But despite its potential, this basement no longer meets health and safety requirements.
01:42The council is paying for renovation work that it hopes to get finished before the next air
01:48raid alert.
01:49This place will never fully meet today's criteria for perfect air raid shelters, but we can at
01:54least change the ventilation system and put in phone and internet lines and try and seal
01:58the doors better.
01:59Some residents have asked for a survey of their own basements to determine how safe they would
02:04be if Helm comes under attack.
