00:00The UKIP demonstration, which has been banned from taking place as planned on Saturday,
00:10was promoted as a so-called mass deportations tool, where organisers calling on attendees
00:18to reclaim Whitechapel from the Islamists. The event was banned by the Metropolitan Police
00:26on the grounds of Whitechapel's large Muslim population and what the Met described as a
00:33realistic prospect of serious disorder. A counter-protest organised by Stand Up Racism
00:41and a number of local groups was also expected. On Tuesday, police said they had imposed public
00:50order and conditions, meaning UKIP cannot hold its protests in Whitechapel or anywhere else
00:58in the borough of Tower Hamlets. UKIP was, of course, instrumental in paving the way for
01:05the in-out referendum on British membership of the EU and received 3.9 million votes under
01:13Nigel Farage's leadership in the 2015 general election. Mr Farage quit UKIP in December of
01:222018, saying he was uncomfortable with the direction the party had taken, having criticised then-leader
01:30Gerard Batten for appointing English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson, whose real name
01:38is, of course, Stephen Yaxley-Lennon as an adviser.
