00:08The EU's trade rules have been called into question

00:11after US President Donald Trump shared a video on his Truth Social platform,

00:16which claims to show Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney

00:19attempting to strike a direct trade deal with the US.

00:22Trump shared a link to a post on X containing the video,

00:25which has amassed thousands of likes and shares,

00:28with a caption that Maloney has defied the EU.

00:31In a stunning political move, Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney has announced

00:35that Italy will ignore EU trade rules and strike a direct deal with Donald Trump's administration.

00:41The video also claims that Maloney will scale back Italy's support for Ukraine

00:45and that Trump has praised her leadership.

00:48However, despite the uproar from some social media users and even some Italian politicians,

00:53the video has no basis in fact, not least because the voice narrating it is AI-generated.

00:59As the European Commission says,

01:01trade outside the EU is an exclusive responsibility of the bloc,

01:06rather than the national governments of member countries.

01:09Maloney's office didn't respond to our request for comment as of the time of recording.

01:13But Italian news reports state that it has denied being in private trade talks with Trump,

01:18acknowledging that they're being led by the European Commission.

01:21It's said that Italy is only in bilateral discussions with the US

01:24over anti-dumping duties against various Italian pasta producers.

01:28It is true, however, that Trump appears to be a fan of Maloney,

01:31as he has praised her multiple times in the past.

01:34And Maloney has also shown herself to be keen to foster good relations with Trump,

01:39and was the only EU leader to attend his inauguration in January.

01:43More recently, at a Gaza peace summit,

01:45Trump said Maloney, the only woman at the event,

01:48was well-respected in Italy and very successful,

01:51and made headlines for calling her beautiful multiple times.
