00:00Montero Beach in the morning can get really empty, especially when it's early morning and the sun
00:22hasn't rose yet. You can luck out and get to the beach, have there only be a few people on the
00:28beach and nobody in the water. It's a really special feeling to sort of be in the nature that way.
00:43To get here from San Francisco you're kind of like winding down the coast and it's like you're on the
00:50cliffs, you feel like you're in a totally different place. It just feels a little bit wilder than a lot
00:57of the Bay Area.
01:02So some people have beach cottages just their vacation home, but we benefit double because
01:09we live in our beach cottage. That feeling of peace is always at home with us.
01:15This is our Montero Beach cottage. It's about 1,200 square feet. We're on a 50 foot by 100 foot lot and our home is two bedrooms, one and a half bathrooms. We're about a 10 minute walk to Montero Beach.
01:21We're about a 10 minute walk to Montero Beach.
01:56To walk out of the front door and be on the trails in 10 minutes was so important.
02:02There's just a whole system of interconnecting trails here. You can go that way and get over to Greywell Cove. You can get that way, jump down to the beach or you can go all the way up to the top of Montero Mountain.
02:14It's pretty incredible. It's made even more special that we can just like walk there from our house.
02:20When we first saw the lot, it had a couple bushy trees on it. It's a 50 foot by 100 foot lot. It's pretty small.
02:34This is the first residential project I ever worked on. I'm an architect doing like civic buildings and large multifamily housing projects and I had some experience squeezing a floor plan into a small space, but I didn't have much experience in the small details that it takes to build a house.
02:53I definitely felt like I was the client and Mo was the architect, which I benefited from. Like there were so many decisions that I didn't have to make. Like, I think that's a hard thing about building a house. Like, okay, I have to decide 800 million different things. And Mo always has an opinion. So if I didn't care, he could pick something, which was really helpful.
03:16When we started the design, I really always wanted to put wood siding on the outside. We were really after that natural wood. Look, Ipe, it's a Brazilian hardwood that people often use for their decks. It performs better than almost all wood in the face of fire. It's also something that I think should be used ethically. And this is a really special part about the Ipe is it ages over time.
03:44So this part of the house is kind of neat because you can see where, like, this is more how the Ipe looked when we first put it up. Um, and then the sun comes through here and has been kind of lightening this whole side.
03:58So this is the main living space and it's open concept. Got the kitchen, the dining room, the living room. It's pretty compact.
04:20My brother made these light fixtures, these three above the island and then the two above the living space. He and I collaborated on the sort of, like, design of the pottery.
04:35We were always kind of trying to get the green in here to sort of tie into the mountains when they're nice and green, like, right now in the springtime.
04:47In the morning, the sun comes through, like, right behind here because it's east, a little bit southeast facing.
04:53And, like, you can read here. And then Naomi will come and snuggle, too.
05:04Book.
05:06When this project started, I was, like, 23 and Mo was 24.
05:11And we just started dreaming about this idea of building a house.
05:15And it really didn't seem like it could ever become reality.
05:19We were living in, like, a 300-square-foot apartment.
05:24It wasn't quite a studio because it had one door.
05:27That door was really important to us.
05:30Eventually, you know, we started seriously looking for land and checked out a couple different places in Monterra.
05:38And we really liked this one.
05:40About a third of the way into the project, we came down here and went for a walk in the woods, and I proposed to Adanya.
05:55We got married during the process of construction, and we had a kid.
06:00So we were racing to the finish line to try to get the house done before our daughter, Naomi, was born.
06:07I would, like, come to the construction site and, like, show my belly and try to, like, get the construction workers to hurry things along.
06:16But, yeah, we were able to bring her home from the hospital to this house.
06:22We got it in time.
06:23This was, like, Mo's sketch of our house from, I think, before we even applied for a building permit.
06:41I mean, I just felt scary to take the leap of building a house.
06:47Like, when we came to the site and they had framed the house, it was like, oh, my gosh, you can walk around in it.
06:53It really feels like a home.
06:55And then that felt so exciting.
06:56And we were like, okay, this is great.
06:58This is all worth it.
06:59So this is our room.
07:03It's small.
07:04It's simple.
07:04But it's a really kind of special and relaxing place.
07:08When we were doing the floor plans for the house, we were thinking about how to make the house as compact as possible.
07:14And I remember, like, putting a queen bed into the drawing of our bedroom and, like, room for a closet.
07:20And we're like, great, done.
07:21Like, it doesn't need to be any bigger than that.
07:23I think small homes just really work for some people.
07:27And it doesn't have to be where you live on your way to something bigger.
07:31That can just be where you live and be wonderful.
07:35Almost all the doorknobs in the house came from my great-grandmother's home in Montreal.
07:41I think they were installed in her house in, like, the 50s.
07:44We like old things.
07:46I think they have a lot of heart in them.
07:49This house does, too.
07:50But some of that heart is going to grow with time.
07:53We're excited for this to become an old house someday.
08:00So this is Naomi's room.
08:02It's actually one of my favorite rooms in the house because when your kid is young, you spend so much time in their room, rocking them to sleep or, like, up at night with them.
08:12And you want it to be, like, a really peaceful and home space.
08:19Ooh!
08:23You're going to do pretend sleep?
08:24Ooh!
08:25Ooh!
08:25Ooh!
08:25Ooh!
08:25Ooh!
08:26Ooh!
08:26Ooh!
08:27Ooh!
08:28Ooh!
08:28Ooh!
08:29Ooh!
08:29Ooh!
08:30Ooh!
08:30Ooh!
08:31Ooh!
08:32Ooh!
08:33So this is the bathroom.
08:35The tub is a little bit Euro-style in that it's very cozy once you're in there because the curtain goes all the way around you, and it's a great tub for Naomi.
08:47The cloth foot tub is, it's really nice to lean into for a little kid, and she loves this thing, and you can hardly get her out of the tub.
09:02Hi, Naomi.
09:03You know, even though we're in the cold part of California, we like the kind of, like, indoor-outdoor vibe, so we like to throw these doors open most of the time.
09:16We added this shower a few months after living here.
09:21It's a really nice place to wash our dog, and a really nice place for me to go after surfing.
09:27We built this whole thing ourself.
09:30I mean, we kind of slapped it all together, but it's all Ipe because it's just extras from the house.
09:40This log actually came from a tree that fell on our property, and we wanted to save this log, and we always had an idea of it being a bench.
09:49It was just, like, floating around the construction site for, you know, years after that, and we kept being like, don't throw the log away.
09:56Like, we're going to need that.
10:10Hello!
10:11Hello!
10:12We've come bearing wine and bread.
10:14Oh, thank you.
10:16Oh, thank you.
10:17Hi.
10:18You know, Naomi's not ready for it yet, but when she's a little bit older,
10:23I would feel totally fine sending her out on these trails by herself because she knows them so well.
10:32I mean, I picture her as an older kid, like, running wild in the street and going and walking the trails by herself and just having this really outdoor childhood.
10:42But I hope that she really appreciates the landscape here.
10:48You know, I didn't grow up by the ocean, and I never imagined that I would live by the ocean.
10:53And it's wild to me to think that this is just going to be her normal.
10:57All right, cheers!
10:59Cheers!
11:00Cheers!
11:01Cheers!
11:02I just, I think I hope that the place instills, like, a deep peace inside of her.
11:09I think it'll be good for her to grow up in a place like this.
