00:00When I go kayaking at Tout Point, it's really, really beautiful.
00:24Just really to get on water and just learn from how much it kind of calms me down and grounds me.
00:30This house has given us so much.
00:39We sort of fell in love with the place and each other at the same time.
00:48Is that fair?
00:50Yeah, I thought buying this place was actually going to break us up because it was very early in our relationship and I did not have the vision for it that he did.
00:58I felt like there was something there that we could figure out and a way for us to learn how to compromise, build things together, create a home.
01:08You need someone with vision and then someone who can sort of execute and so we're definitely a good team that way.
01:14I was confident that George would come around to it and with his magic and eye kind of make it beautiful.
01:20We're in the South Fork of Long Island, Southampton.
01:34The house is on Sims Street, S-I-M-M-S.
01:41I thought it started as a, it was meant to be a summer cottage.
01:44Yes.
01:45But on Sims Street and then you started saying Simmer Down and then it became Simmer Cottage is how I remember the conversation.
01:52Okay.
01:53Also I think the simmer just with like something simmering on the stove just really played well with like what the house represented in terms of like this is a place you kind of come to slow down.
02:01We live in a one bedroom apartment in Chelsea in Manhattan.
02:05Just knowing that I have a place to go to on the weekends, I think is just so good for me.
02:12Simmer Cottage is three bedrooms.
02:17About 1,100 square feet sitting on a half acre.
02:22I think part of it was built like in 1918 and then another part was built in like the 30s.
02:26So some of it might be over a hundred years old.
02:28I think the first time we came to visit this house was in September of 2017.
02:33There was something about it that just drew me to it.
02:36I was excited by it.
02:37I felt like it had a story.
02:39I felt transported the minute I arrived here.
02:42The first time I walked in, I was like, oof, it was really in dire straits.
02:47And I said, no, but he, you know, went forward with it.
02:50And it actually kind of, you know, we were nesting at that point.
02:54It became like our joint project.
02:56First time we arrived at the house, the thing that really drew me to it was the porch, but also this chimney, which wasn't anything.
03:02But just really sweet and really just drew me in.
03:07Come on in.
03:09You enter the house and you're in the front porch.
03:12There's just this beautiful, bright, airy porch with like little reading nooks.
03:16We set off to just kind of make this really different than how you were first greeted into the house.
03:23So we built these, found a woman on Etsy to create these little cushions, and then just found as many pillows as we possibly could find.
03:32And this is where I'll just sort of chill.
03:34I need to just sit here and just like watch the day go by.
03:44This is the living room, which I'd say is probably like the coziest room in the house.
03:49Like perfect for winter.
03:51It's a little darker, has the fireplace.
03:53This is what sold me on the house.
03:57I just felt like there was like a heart and soul to this fireplace and just something I imagined that's like curling up next to having a Christmas tree here for the holidays.
04:07Sure.
04:08Yeah, this is where the tree usually goes.
04:10It kind of just felt like I was like entering a rom-com.
04:12The movie The Holiday was definitely a reference.
04:15We had been to the Cotswolds probably earlier that year or the year before when we bought this, and we loved it.
04:21We actually went to the town where the movie was filmed, looking for the house only to find out it was a set.
04:27It did not exist, but there was a placard there.
04:30But it was, yeah, it was a cute, sweet little town with tea houses.
04:33We wanted it to feel like a place that you came to, transported, like you were arriving at your grandmother's home and you were going to have a really nice cup of tea and some really good baked goods.
04:42And just have a chat and feel like you had like warm hugs all weekend.
04:47You know, we both lived in London for a few years separately.
04:50And I think that culture really just, you know, got under our skin in a good way.
04:54This is not what I would consider a typical beach cottage.
04:57It's not shiplap.
04:59Maybe what a British beach cottage would look like.
05:12This is probably the best room in the house, honestly.
05:15Just like from the scale and the pattern of the fabric.
05:21You have this nook up here that we have like a dollhouse, a birdcage.
05:25We have hampers.
05:27The first homeowners, they were fabric importers from France.
05:29We were told they owned a fabric company.
05:32Every wall in this house, it looks like wallpaper, but it's actually upholstered fabric.
05:37So it's soft to the touch.
05:39It absorbs sound.
05:40It's really quiet and cozy in here.
05:42I think audibly it is.
05:44Visually it is in every way.
05:46There is something about the fabric that just like warms up a room and makes you feel like you're just like in like a big pillow or like a big bed.
05:53We just started adding more corny plates.
05:56Some we would take from restaurants if they had their name on them.
06:00Friends started bringing some out.
06:02I think this octopus is my favorite.
06:04It's from John Darien.
06:05I think it was a gift from my mother.
06:08I think your mom gave you that.
06:09Yeah.
06:10And then of course there's something for everyone in this room.
06:11So we have the candy corner over there.
06:14We set the room up to feel like a B&B, you know, if we have guests.
06:18So there's always like a cake plate with some snack in it.
06:23So here's the kitchen.
06:27This is a hybrid of the Great British Bake Off and Amy Sedaris.
06:33At home with Amy Sedaris.
06:34At home with Amy Sedaris.
06:35I've actually always dreamed of inviting Amy here.
06:40I feel like she would love this house because it's just so playful.
06:45We painted the walls yellow in here.
06:47We did a yellow and white checkered floor.
06:50Anthony loves the color yellow, so it just made sense.
06:53He's in here a lot.
06:54It inspires him.
06:59There are lots of parts of the house and yard that you can kind of get away and be on your own.
07:04There's a trail around the side of the house that leads back to this back patio that has these shades that you can pull for shade.
07:14We have a cedar sided hot tub here.
07:18A fire pit that we use at night.
07:20And then like a five foot deep pool.
07:23In a pool like this you can just hang out in here all day.
07:30Whether we're chatting, reading, relaxing.
07:34I started coming out here in 2013.
07:38That's when my parents bought a house about like a mile and a half down the road from here.
07:43And the beach was always prioritized in my family.
07:45We come from coastal Italy.
07:47And I think that having that proximity is just a real privilege and luxury.
08:00This is the gallery or hallway that basically leads to all the bedrooms.
08:04This is just a collection of art from our apartments, things that we've collected along the way.
08:10Oftentimes we'll be having like dinner, friends over for dinner, and they will say they're going to the bathroom.
08:16And then you kind of find them just kind of stuck in the hallway just looking around because their eyes are just going everywhere.
08:22Reading, understanding.
08:23Yeah, it's just an opportunity to kind of get lost.
08:26Really a hodgepodge of vintage store finds from the North Fork and the South Fork.
08:32Estate sales.
08:33We would be at like every estate sale.
08:34We knew people by first name.
08:36Every time we'd go somewhere, we'd find like a flea market or something where there was secondhand stuff for sale.
08:41It's a small house, but somehow it swallows everything up.
08:45If you just get the thing because you like it, it turns out like if you're getting all things that you like, they all just sort of like work together in the end.
08:55Head over to the captain's quarters.
08:56This is where George and I typically sleep.
08:59We call our bed the boat.
09:01And so this feels like you're in a boat in a way because you have all this blue fabric all over.
09:07The thing I really love about this fabric is it's actually really calming.
09:11You know, it's a small room, but the bed takes up both of the room.
09:14And it's just really cozy in here.
09:18This is the classroom.
09:19It sort of is modeled to look like a classroom that you would have seen maybe in elementary school.
09:24I think the map sort of drove it in that direction and then we sort of wanted an office.
09:28We went to visit my mom and we went into the attic and I found some old toys from when I was a kid and we put them up on the shelf here.
09:34Yeah, we just leaned into that for this room so that if people, if guests come with kids, they can put them in here.
09:39George's family is from a small town near Naples here on the west coast.
09:43And then my family's actually exactly on the east coast from a small town near Badi or Puglia region.
09:49I think like proximity to my family definitely drove the decision making a little bit.
09:58Thanks for having us. This is awesome.
09:59Bye dad.
10:03It's fun. I like cooking, especially as a group.
10:05My mom definitely inspired me. She was, she always used to try new dishes.
10:09Maybe 200?
10:10It's warming up. It's not there yet.
10:12Baked ziti, I got baked ziti. I would, hers will always be the best.
10:17I felt like this house kind of gave us like this canvas to host and create memories.
10:25Hi.
10:26Hi.
10:28It's just something that we both love doing.
10:33Every time I come in here, you like you pay attention to like a different detail because there's so much.
10:38It's a small house, but there's so many, there's so much detail around it.
10:41Yeah.
10:42You know, so like you have to almost like walk through it a hundred times.
10:45Yeah.
10:46I know you're going to be making them.
10:49We want to be able to have, you know, family out.
10:52We want to be able to have friends and their children out.
10:56Happy birthday to you.
11:12We really look forward to it being a place where more people can come and create memories with us.
11:18Having this is such a privilege.
11:20I'm so grateful that he didn't listen to me.
11:22Yeah.
11:23I just want to be able to be able to change them again.
11:24Yeah.
11:25It's great to be able to be able to relax, it's great to me to be able to follow us and
11:26bring it back, we feel grateful to ourselves and we do so as much as we can definitely
11:28happen, because we know that while we don't have time to stay, we make it look so happy.
11:29The older older older older older older older older older older older older older
11:30, we children we would try to work so-py.
