00:29beautiful nature and culture. Oaxaca is a place where it's inspired me a lot but
00:38look here the water for me this is like a painter the shapes ceramics textiles
00:48color flavors music is very it's a very rich country in terms of cultural
00:56manifestations for me was very specific and very important having a high-end
01:03house into a wild beach because it's a contrast I decide to make absolutely
01:12everything in the house I mean from the furniture to the cup where you drink your
01:17coffee so everything is possible because the clay here is important for this kind
01:23of rustic and very beautiful original pottery
01:31it's a beautiful dialogue in between the wild nature and the sophistication of
01:38of design
01:50since I was a child I was obsessed with order decoration colors so for me beauty is
01:59part of my daily life since I wake up until the end
02:08so for me breakfast is food but as well of food is color textures and all things
02:17that I'm totally obsessed in life this is palapa concreta on the Oaxacan coast of Mexico
02:25I live in between Oaxaca and Mexico City I come from originally Venezuela but I left my country because of the dictatorship 20 years ago and one of the first places was New York a political exile looking for a new place
02:32but you know missing my country always looking for a new place but you know missing my country always and looking you know for a right place for a Venezuelan artist
02:39I live in between Oaxaca and Mexico City I come from originally Venezuela but I left my country because of the dictatorship 20 years ago and one of the first places was New York a political exile looking for a new place but you know missing my country always and looking for a right place for a Venezuelan artist
03:00When I arrived here 2017 I came first time to this beach and I was walking with my dogs I saw a paradise just nature nothing else here we are very far from the town 20 km from from Cicatela
03:21from Cicatela when I first saw the land here was nothing I was the first one to
03:29make a house in this area I came here to this land you know in the middle of
03:34nowhere and say I want to make very high-end design house with my friend
03:39Anna La Sala that she's the architect and is we start making this this
03:45adventure about form love art and architecture
03:58all the plants here I I planted everything here is is local and you know
04:04endemic this is the first step to get into the house
04:15the palapa is the roof and the walls in general here we have three different
04:22materials concrete wood and palm gray beige brown
04:33we choose these materials because we're the local ones this is kind of a pyramid in
04:39concrete and then you have this triangle in wood so is the dialogue between these two
04:46elements this is a beautiful roof and wall that you can they meet with the palm here
04:56when it's green and this is why I love this rural way of making roofs
05:03I came from New York to here to see the process because I know it's an unique experience watching
05:15people knitting a roof knitting a roof this way as they did it 800 years ago the kitchen for me
05:25should be the center of any house for me this is like the soul of the house because you got everything that you need you can sit here during a conversation on a party or dinner and you can have here with friends and going up and going down going back it's like a huge monument for for art and creativity
05:45we made the shelf everything is made with pine from the area and I made all these ceramics with the Oaxacan clay this is the local clay this is a mezcal set made with clay from Mexico City so this is the same palette of the house everything is made with the same palette
06:10most of my time I have my workshop and my studio in Mexico City but sometimes I come here to the house and I normally when I'm in the house I'm working in some projects or a specific project with the clay from this area the Oaxacan clay this is a new specific clay got a lot of iron and the
06:40structure of the structure of the clay that is very raw and natural that are very good for modeling
06:47all the furniture was made with a carpenter and me so everything was made in the house I designed this day bed my mom paint these cushions and this table I designed it very
07:10very low I'm very rusty to to be part of this small area for having a nice conversation or coffee
07:19this is a very wild weather area so it's a seasonal house when here wins the winds come everywhere because the house is open if the rains comes there the rain goes everywhere
07:36in a part of the year it's impossible to stay here because the hurricanes and the rain
07:43one of the most beautiful things about the house is all the nature is inside and I can allow and embrace the nature coming into the house I'm not deciding that maybe this is coming down there is naturally there I'm not you know pushing nature to be in the place where I want
08:04one day I came and suddenly the vines were coming down and the gardener asked me to cut it and I said no please leave it in that way and this is like a natural installation here this is the second floor and we have here two rooms this is the second room of the house this is the gate
08:31room and with a mountain view and this is a system we design for the house for closing and you close here you take the stick stick and then you put this pin in wood like a lock like a rural rock rock rock
08:58When I come here it's not for escape from art it's escaping from the noise of the city and be in a very intimate moment with my ideas and with my drawings in a very small scale
09:25and with my life
09:27because here it's just sketches and playing exploring colors you know textures more than work
09:32I do a lot of self-portraits so this is the two me
09:41the happy and the sad life is made in a sense from this contrast of day and night
09:54day and night natural and concrete you know this this is like the essence of being here
10:04here upstairs everything is natural and local materials this is the door and the wall of the house and are made with the same technique that is a local and very antique technique of putting the coconut palm tree together with the Nile so this is a very beautiful
10:23this is a very beautiful way of using the coconut palm
10:30this is the main room
10:37human is my dog he's an Italian greyhound that comes from New York and he's the owner of my bed
10:51the way it was built the architect Anna she decided to locate the house with this front of the sea because the air could flow freely around the second floor
11:03you can have here the ocean view and the house garden view the sound of the sea is beautiful mixing with the air and the birds this beautiful is kind of a music as a contemporary piece
11:20my friend and Jean Louise they always come when I'm here at the house and we love cooking together
11:35she's one of my best friends he teach me and I teach her
11:50always
11:54Louis is Angie's husband
11:57he's one of the most important people for building this house
12:02he made all the wood on the concrete of the dining room
12:07all the furniture together
12:09we had one idea we discussed it and then he gave me his feedback about how we can make this furniture or this chair or this stool
12:19and we build the house together
12:22let's go to the beach
12:29let's go to the beach
12:34here is
12:36it's quiet
12:38and I can be in silence
12:40with nature
12:42so this is very important to reset
12:45a crazy life in the city
12:47for artists it's very rich place to be rich place to create
12:57and that's the most important thing for me
13:00as an artist and as a foreigner
13:03having a place where I can be free creating and living
