00:00eclipse. If there was a code for living your best life, I think we may have cracked it.
00:10Last week, we left Rome and headed down Italy's west coast to explore the island of Capri.
00:16It looks very tight and very small. You know what you have to do? You have to pray.
00:21Breathe. And the ancient city of Pompeii. It's like we've stepped back in time because things
00:31are so well preserved. This week, our scenic eclipse Italian icons voyage is taking us to
00:39the Mediterranean islands of Sardinia and Corsica, up to Monaco, and finishing this most magnificent
00:46of travel experiences in the French city of Nice.
00:51Today, we're anchored off Porto Cervo in northern Sardinia.
01:04From here, we're traveling 20 minutes by road to San Pantaleo, an ancient village dating back
01:10to 800 AD.
01:11What a backdrop to this town, these mountains.
01:23These mountains we call the Sardinian Dolomites. All rocks, all mountains here are granite.
01:29And that's why you can see even here in the village how they use the granite to build up
01:35the houses. Over the centuries, this beautiful village has kept its old world charm and its
01:42artistic heart.
01:43It's known for the artist and handcraft workers which they chose to live here in the sixties
01:54of last century. And then here we will find all the small roads, some artists or some handcraft
02:01workers. They are sailing their products.
02:03Despite its small size, San Pantaleo's charming streets and narrow laneways leave a big impression.
02:19Beautiful beaches and charming villages aside, Sardinia is also a renowned wine region.
02:25First of all, we are on an island with nearly no industry. So all the things that we are producing
02:34here are organic. If you have a look up there, you can see the rest of an old castle from the
02:4112th, 14th century of A.C.
02:44Oh wow. And up there is the castle of Balayana and that's why this winery is called Balayana,
02:51which is a part of the winery of Piero Mancini.
03:03These scenic free choice excursions are of course all inclusive to give us guests the best experiences
03:09and locations at every port. This one, the name is Falkale and this is the Kano Nau.
03:17The international name is Gerenas. And if you needed an excuse for a daily tipple,
03:24apparently a Sardinian reg can add ease to your life. We have the blue zone here in Sardinia
03:30and in the blue zone, the 100 years old people, they are all confirming that they are still drinking
03:36wine, doing their dishes like lunch and dinner and it's the Kano Nau wine.
03:41So if we drink this, we will live to where 100?
03:45What a 100, yes.
03:46Why are we having a glass? We should just have the bottle.
03:49No, no, no, you have to. You can drink but one glass for the dish.
03:56Okay, so still in moderation.
03:58So cheers to living to 100. Yes.
04:10At 168 metres long and with just 114 guest suites, Scenic Eclipse is as spacious as it is luxurious.
04:19Every suite is decked out to give guests the ultimate in comfort.
04:24And, of course, comes with a full-size balcony to really capture the at sea experience.
04:32As much as I love getting out exploring, nothing beats coming back to my own private oasis
04:38and just taking it all in.
04:40After the break, the beauty of the island of Corsica.
04:50We have over 100 mountains that is over 2,000 metres high, so it's pure mountains.
04:55From the gorgeous Italian island of Sardinia, Scenic Eclipse has taken us north to Corsica
05:18on our eight-day Italian Icons cruise.
05:21Despite its close proximity to Sardinia, Corsica is actually part of France.
05:31This laid-back island has a very rich history, from prehistoric settlements to Greek and Roman influence.
05:44We're in the oldest village in Corsica.
05:46We are on one of the oldest. We are about 500 metres above the sea level.
05:50And this village was built back in the 10th century, so 900, which makes one of the oldest one in Corsica.
05:56And what is its name?
05:57It's Sant Antonino.
05:59And how many people live here?
06:00There's about 50 people who live here all along.
06:02At all?
06:03It's very, very tiny, it's very, very small.
06:04It's really a village where everybody knows everybody, and it's probably all the same family.
06:07There's four families that share in the village, actually.
06:10This hilltop village in the north of the island, with its ancient stone houses, narrow laneways and panoramic views, has a charm all of its own.
06:20For the millions of tourists who visit Corsica every year, how is it still so untouched?
06:30The reason why is because, as Corsicans, we try to protect our nature as much as possible.
06:35So here there is no big constrictions, we don't have big hotels, we don't have those fast food, those international companies.
06:40It does not exist in the island.
06:41For example, if you go down at the beach, you don't have those passive huge hotels, those huge resorts.
06:45We try to protect as much as possible.
06:49And what you have to understand is three quarters of the island is totally wide.
06:53So it's really, really wide island.
06:54It does have that rugged sort of appeal, I can feel it.
07:01This tiny village has one very popular local delicacy.
07:05Why is citrus so good here in Corsica?
07:07All right, this is something we've been making for thousands of years.
07:10Okay, here the first people that came here were the Greeks, so 2,600 years ago.
07:14And with them, they brought vignettes, olive oil and lemons.
07:17So since then we've been producing lemons.
07:19And it's very famous here, you've made a drink that I hear is very popular.
07:23Exactly, it's not limoncello, there is no alcohol, it's pure lemon juice that of course we mix with water.
07:28This is something we have to have in the morning.
07:30So we buy the bottle which is already made, and you pour a little bit in the morning.
07:34Chin chin!
07:35Oh, chin chin!
07:40What do you think?
07:41I love it!
07:42It's good, eh?
07:43It's good, eh?
07:44I kept hearing you had to add sugar, so I was expecting it to be quite bitter, but that's beautiful.
07:47It is not, it's actually a very sweet can of lemons.
07:50I don't need sugar in that.
07:51No, you don't.
07:52We're anchored just off the pretty port of Calvi, so guests can explore at leisure, soak up the comforts on board, or head further afield.
08:05We've signed up for the old villages of Portica scenic free choice excursion, and our next stop is a local favourite.
08:12What is so special about this village, there's this narrow little street full of cable stone that gives a lot of charm to the village.
08:19Full of colours, you know, the blue colour of Piña, which makes it unique, the contrast of the water, the contrast of the architecture.
08:25It's absolutely a beautiful village. To me, it's probably my most favourite village.
08:29Piña is one of many inland villages in Corsica. Developed because centuries ago, when there was a risk of invasion from pirates, it was considered far safer to live away from the coast.
08:45Look at this auditorium. This place was made basically back in the 15th century for the animals, so we used to keep all the animals, like animals, cows, donkeys, right here.
08:56The former stockyard was transformed into a theatre back in 1974, and is now listed as a historical monument.
09:03But what Piña is best known for these days is its artisan origins.
09:10This is Thomas. It's the third generation of making ceramics here.
09:14This place was opened in 1976, and they've been making ceramics since then.
09:18So everything is handmade, they have a beautiful colour, and the typical colour of Piña is the blue,
09:24because the colour of the water, which is really, really blue, and the colour of the sky.
09:29Wow, so when you come here to Piña, you know you're getting one-of-a-kind, handmade ceramics.
09:35Exactly.

10:13After the break, living the high life in Monaco.
10:18We really are in a beautiful part of the world, aren't we?
10:21Oh yes.
10:33Waking up aboard Scenic Eclipse is already a magical travel experience.
10:38But when it delivers you to locations like Monaco, you know the day is set to get even better.
10:44P-N-A-N-O-R-O-U-S
10:51What a glamorous place this is.
10:54And very tiny as well.
10:55It is.
10:56It's seven smaller states in Europe.
10:58At the Vatican, just one square mile.
11:00It's unbelievable that all this money is concentrated on such a small space, isn't it?
11:07Despite its small size, Monaco is known as one of the wealthiest countries in the world.
11:12It's historic casino was established back in the 1860s and has become a symbol of the extravagant lifestyle.
11:21Champagne, wick, soup, caviar.
11:23Just steps from the casino is another local icon.
11:29Café de Paris.
11:30Now Sam, look around here.
11:31You are in the most iconic place in Monaco, the most iconic restaurant, which was opened already in 1868 as a meeting point for high society.
11:42The location itself isn't the only thing that's made this restaurant a Monaco landmark.
11:49Well, you can taste good crepe everywhere in France.
11:52It's our best appetitizer, our favorite brunch, but only here in this place, in this restaurant, you can taste the right one.
11:59Crepe Suzette.
12:00Legend has it that royalty at the time was dining here, and the chef accidentally set fire to the liqueur on the crepes.
12:11That glorious mistake created this magnificent dessert.
12:14Try it.
12:15Taste it.
12:16So soft, subtle kick of orange.
12:26What a delicious mistake.
12:31Monaco has been ruled by the Grimaldi family for eight centuries, making it the longest-running royal family in Europe.
12:37in Europe. The Prince's Palace is the centrepiece of the old town area. Built in the 12th century
12:46as a fortress, it's now a lavish home to Prince Albert and his family. It's really building
12:53up now in front of the palace. Is something going to happen? Oh yes, we are waiting for
12:57a change on the guard, the main one, which is just once in the day. It's 12 o'clock
13:01that's really deep. At just over 200 hectares, Monaco is the second smallest country in the
13:11world and only two thirds the size of New York's Central Park. Even more unbelievable is the
13:19opportunity to see it from up high. If being on a superyacht wasn't surreal enough, taking
13:26off from it and a private helicopter is really taking things to another level.
13:38Scenic Eclipse has two resident helicopters, giving guests the ability to see each destination
13:44from all angles. Are we still looking at Monaco here?
13:49Nope, from Monaco is behind us and now over here to the left is Merton.
13:54Or this is now France, over here to the left.
13:59Wow, so Monaco is just a tiny little dot from up here.
14:03It's tiny little dot, yeah.
14:05So Monaco, France and Italy in 30 minutes.
14:09That's correct.
14:11Well, I can honestly say I've never been to three countries in 30 minutes, but now again.
14:16And what perfect conditions for flying, the sun's out, it's just glorious.
14:21Yeah, it's a beautiful day. And now we're back almost in France.
14:26We're about to cross the border.
14:28That is open, of course. They're not checking everyone here.
14:32Alright, now we're back in France.
14:34We don't need to show our passports to cross over.
14:36And just when you thought one day couldn't possibly have any more highlights.
14:45Scenic and rich events are one-off experiences that always promise to add something special to your trip.
14:52And stepping out at night in Monaco of all places, it feels like this one might be extra memorable.
14:58Built within a cliff face, the Onshino Graphic Museum is one of Monaco's most striking buildings and home to more than 6,000 marine specimens.
15:09For us scenic guests, it's the backdrop for a very special evening.
15:14Watching a private classical concert in this iconic venue is a truly memorable travel experience.
15:30Okay travellers, it is competition time.

16:38After the break, we've arrived in the city of Nice.
16:42Just cruising and exploring at your own pace.
16:45This is holiday mode.
16:47I love me.
16:50I love you.
16:54Hell is for the way you look at me.
17:01From the ancient city of Rome to the Mediterranean islands of Capri, Sardinia and Corsica,
17:08Scenic's Italian icon's voyage has given us the chance to completely bliss out and soak up the very best of the Meds.
17:15After exploring Monaco from the sea, the land and the air...
17:22Up here, it's quite nice.
17:24You almost feel quite free just to see it all.
17:27We've reached our final destination, the French city of Nice.
17:31Nice is best known for its 7km long promenade, showing off views out to the Mediterranean Sea and the complimentary e-bikes from Scenic Eclipse are the best way to explore at leisure.
17:46There's something about being on a bike that makes you feel totally carefree is cruising and exploring at your own pace.
17:58Just half an hour inland from Nice is St. Paul-de-Fonts, one of the oldest medieval towns on the French Riviera.
18:08So Nice is a big, beautiful, vibrant city and then just a short drive, we end up here in the countryside in this beautiful, quaint village.
18:18Yes, it's a big contrast for us compared to Nice because it's a charm of France.
18:23Here you have the fortification, there you imagine from the 16th century, you could walk all along the fortification and during 10 years, between 1537 until 1547, it took a long time to protect the village.
18:42So 10 years to build the surrounding walls.
18:44Yes.
18:45The ancient city walls are still partly intact and while the town itself is tiny, it holds a wealth of history and charm.
18:54And this village, it's a very select place, it's a place to be, it's like a little MoMA from many writers, painters.
19:05Why do you think they were all coming here?
19:07Because there is a light, very special here for the painters.
19:12It's so charming.
19:15World-renowned artists like Picasso and Matisse all spend time in St. Paul and that artistic spirit remains.
19:25The village attracts a couple of million visitors a year but has just 3,000 permanent residents.
19:37Look at this street, very nice, isn't it?
19:41Very tiny.
19:42Yeah, it's very French, tiny little street representing the charm of St. Paul.
19:49We still have people living here, you know.
19:51Really?
19:52Yes, and some have houses from a long time and they even have a heart gallery.
19:58In the centre of the village is a 17th century fountain, now a historical relic, but once the primary source of water for the town.
20:06So people were bringing their own water up from the well.
20:09Exactly, and you see this is, it was a old hotel and here, that was a washing house.
20:16It's like the half of the village here, you know, where people meet and talk.
20:21The town's narrow streets house many local treasures.
20:28This is a traditional type of nougat.
20:32Yes, it is a traditional nougat from Provence and they made different nougat.
20:38This one is made with a white egg, it's a traditional one but we have different speciality, even with pistachio, with red fruits, with orange.
20:50And you could smell it if you want.
20:53Ooh, the almonds.
20:55Yes, almonds, and you could conserve one year outside like that.
20:59Oh, you can have it for one year.
21:01It would not last in my house for one year.
21:04It would last a day.
21:07What do you like?
21:09That's the best nougat I've ever tasted.

21:48Unforgettable in every way.
21:58From the glamour of Monaco to the charm of its seaside towns and medieval villages, the Med really does cover all bases.
22:07Throw in some sunshine, good times, a super yacht and a helicopter ride.
22:12This is definitely a holiday to remember.
22:14Thanks for cruising with me.
22:31Next week, Katrina is in Tahiti.
22:33You'll want to give yourself time here because it has it all.
22:37Plus really getting away from the tour in Tassie.
22:39Well, you won't find a better definition of isolation than this.
22:44See you then.
22:45Good night.
22:46Good night.
