A new plaque has been unveiled on Farnham’s Notable Names of Farnham wall to commemorate the life and achievements of internationally renowned dendrologist Alan Fyson Mitchell VMA (1922–1995).
The unveiling was held on 14 October and was attended by family members, friends, and special guests, including Colin Hall Chairman of the Tree Register of the British Isles, which Alan founded in 1988. Alan Mitchell’s daughter Julia joined the Mayor of Farnham, Councillor George Murray to officially reveal the plaque.

00:00Coming today for this special occasion to celebrate the life and achievements of Alan Mitchell.
00:072025 is the 30th anniversary of his death and it is very fitting that we remember his incredible
00:15work in this way. We will say a few words here and then add to them away from the traffic
00:21when we go back to the council chamber. The notable names of Farnham is dedicated for those
00:29who have achieved great things in Farnham or who have a close connection with Farnham and
00:36achieved great things elsewhere. We currently have 35 plaques on this wall, soon to be 36,
00:44from remembered people of distinction from musicians to sports people, artists and architects
00:52and now a dendrologist. That's a new word I found out today I would say. Every day's a
00:59burning day, right? So it gives me great pleasure to invite Alan's daughter, Julia, to join me
01:06and officially unveil the new flag on our notable names of Farnham Wall to celebrate the achievements
01:12of internationally acclaimed Alan Mitchell. Right, are we ready to do the honours?
