A shocking video from the Erode–Jogbani Amrit Bharat Express (Train No. 16601) has gone viral, showing a man allegedly washing used disposable meal trays inside the passenger compartment, raising major concerns over hygiene and food safety on Indian Railways.

The incident reportedly occurred during one of the train’s recent journeys. The video, filmed by a passenger, shows a man — believed to be part of the railway catering staff — cleaning and stacking plastic meal trays at a washbasin meant for passengers. When questioned, he nervously claimed the containers were being “sent back,” but couldn’t explain why they were being washed in the passenger area instead of the pantry car.

The video has since gone viral, with social media users tagging @RailMinIndia and @IRCTCofficial, demanding an inquiry. One post alleged, “A scam worth crores — passengers are being served dirty, reused containers washed with filthy water.”

In response, Indian Railways clarified that “the casseroles were used only once, not reused for serving food. They were being cleaned before disposal, as verified through a factual investigation. Please don’t spread misleading information.”

The Erode–Jogbani Amrit Bharat Express runs once a week, covering over 3,100 km across multiple states from Tamil Nadu to Bihar. Experts warn that reusing disposable containers can pose severe health hazards, especially when serving hot meals, as plastic can release toxic chemicals.
