Some Indonesian migrant workers say they've been charged illegal brokerage fees when renewing contracts or changing employers. They and labor rights NGOs are demanding a crackdown on the practice.

00:00Migrant workers are demanding the government stop job brokers from charging illegal fees
00:05to help them renew contracts or switch employees.
00:0920 workers who have been charged these fees gathered with NGOs outside the Labor Ministry Sunday
00:14to share their stories of exploitation.
00:19Not long ago, our contract was ending and the employer wanted to keep employing us.
00:24But while handling the paperwork, the broker privately demanded we each pay $1,600 to $2,600 U.S. dollars
00:31as a condition for renewing the contract.
00:34The workers here did eventually get their money back,
00:38but NGO Taiwan International Workers Association says that's not enough.
00:43It's calling for changes, including more direct hiring of migrant workers,
00:47a stringent international monitoring system,
00:49and severe punishment for brokers who charge these illegal fees.
00:54The Labor Ministry says that brokers caught taking money illegally from migrant workers
01:15can be fined up to 20 times the amount they take and be shut down.
