00:00We start at St. Paul, Minnesota, where 135 classics take on the great race.
00:24Nine days, hidden checkpoints, and precision driving to South Carolina.
00:30Along the way, family teams and vintage flatheads show it's about more than miles, it's about memories.
00:37Next, at Southfield Classics, brand new SE31T trucks roll out.
00:42GM 3100 replicas reimagined as all-electric hot rods.
00:47Finally, we hit Echo Park Speedway, where a 93 Toyota Supra gets a tune-up and prepares for the 2026 NOPE Nationals.
01:00We have 135-plus cars in the great race.
01:04Checkpoints along the way that they don't know in advance, and so the goal is you're going to stay on target.
01:10From start to finish, it's like family to me.
01:12So keeping it maintained, keeping it running hard, it's a complete family member, it's an experience.
01:17All the workers, all the towns that have been welcoming us.
01:20Winning an ace in the great race is just, it's one of the things that just lifts you up.
01:24Were we on time and everybody else was wrong?
01:26Were they on time and we were wrong?
01:28I guess we'll find out tonight.
01:30We're kicking off the great race in St. Paul, Minnesota.
01:33135 cars, hidden checkpoints, and nothing but precision driving.
01:38It's family, it's teamwork, and it's nine days of pure adventure all the way to South Carolina.
01:43Welcome to another great season of Sam's Garage.
01:47Check it out.
01:48We've got the 240 back in action.
01:51We're at the great race, St. Paul, Minnesota.
01:53The start of the first day.
01:55Today is a practice run day.
01:57We just had a driver's meeting.
01:58Doug is in the building taking care of some business, and we're going to be going all the way down to South Carolina this year.
02:04You guys don't want to miss it.
02:05We're going to bring you half the episode, double the action, from the great race.
02:09We're even starting off at one of the biggest events in the country, which is the back to the 50s, at the fairgrounds right here in St. Paul.
02:16I can't wait to go to the show tomorrow, where the start of the race is going to take off at noon from the show.
02:22I cannot wait.
02:24Volunteer.
02:24It's my sixth year on the great race.
02:27I kind of got wrangled into this six, seven years ago by Jeff Stone, the director of the great race.
02:32Riverside, California was my first stop.
02:34He showed up, and what you see in the background is what Jeff told me I needed to set up every day at the great race, at the finish line, every day.
02:42So six years, seven years, we've been doing this every day for the great race, and everything that the great race brings to town each night.
02:50Me and my crew is in charge of setting up, and we've been doing it ever since.
02:53The camaraderie, the race cars, the race individuals, the teams, the drivers, the crew, Coker Tire, everybody, it's great being here.
03:03You look forward to it every year.
03:05It's only nine days, and then we get to spend 11 months and two weeks trying to figure out how to get back and where we're going.
03:12My oldest two sons have been with me two different years on the great race, and this year, my youngest son's with me.
03:18Great family event.
03:20Jeff's wonderful to work for, and the whole great race crew.
03:23We look legit, right?
03:24Because we've got the RV, we've got two chase vehicles, we've got the race car, we've got ladies in the background sitting with their dog.
03:30We've got the whole family out here to make sure that we're going to complete this race, and we're no longer novice this year.
03:36We're actually sportsmen, which means instead of coming in 89th place, we may come in 87th place, as long as Doug does his job, and I do my job driving.
03:45And you guys, this is a slow, technical race.
03:47It is all about how well you can follow instructions and drive the car at a steady pace, slowly.
03:54And so you think that this is easy.
03:57It's actually much harder than a race you would normally go when you're trying to beat the time and go very fast.
04:01Much harder race than that.
04:02So you want to stay tuned.
04:04This is going to be very fun.
04:08Tim's quarters, okay?
04:09This is where Tim does all the driving.
04:11We have a new guy.
04:12His name is Anthony.
04:13And there's Deanne.
04:14She is here for the support team as well.
04:16She is Doug's better half.
04:19Fourth year, me and my brother.
04:20Each time we run the great race, we find something different that needs to be fixed on the car.
04:25But I think at this point, on our fourth year, I think we're in really good shape.
04:30We've rebuilt the transmission.
04:31We've built the engine, suspension.
04:33So it breaks for anybody that's in the cars.
04:36If you don't have a support crew, you need to be able to work on your own car, which that's what we are.
04:40We're our own support crew.
04:42But we've got through everything, and here we are again.
04:48So what we've got here is a 1972, so we have a choke.
04:52That's in order to get the carburetors all ready to go when it's cold.
04:55That way it'll dump fuel.
04:57Let's see what happens.
04:58Let's see if this Nissan's as reliable as we think it is.
05:02You know, there's another type of choke, too.
05:05And that's when Sam pisses me off, and I do this.
05:09So that could happen today.
05:10If it doesn't happen today, it's going to happen at some point this week.
05:12Yeah, absolutely guaranteed.
05:15Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU.
05:20Brought to you by the following companies.
05:22Welcome back to Sam's Garage.
05:52Sam's Garage, presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
06:03The great race isn't just about cars.
06:06It's about family, heritage, and the thrill of the journey.
06:09From father-son teams to daughters navigating, these classics are rallying 2,300 miles with
06:16original flatheads and three-speeds still going strong.
06:19We've been doing this since 2005 was our first year, so about 20 years now.
06:24We all got started with my grandpa.
06:26He started in 2000.
06:28Father-son team.
06:29We do, in addition to the great race, we do a thing called the ISDE, which is an international
06:33motorcycle race that we support Team USA for every year, and a different country every year
06:38as well.
06:38It's an original 21-stud flathead V8 motor, three-speed transmission, original driveline.
06:44We actually just got done replacing the driveshaft coupler on the rear end, but we ended up shearing
06:49almost all the splines off of it.
06:51So we just got that back together about an hour ago, so we're ready to go rallying now.
06:56The great race is about, really, in your case, and a lot of cases, hanging out with your family.
07:00Yeah, my daughter is the navigator, so she is the one responsible for keeping us on track
07:06and on time.
07:07I'm just the driver, which makes it a lot easier, because if there's a mistake made, I don't
07:11get yelled at, and I don't yell at her.
07:14That is so true, right?
07:15The driver's got it made.
07:16You can't replace the time with them, so it's a fun sport.
07:19I really like the great race.
07:21There's good people that are out there.
07:23We take it to car shows.
07:25We take it to cars and coffee.
07:26We just take it whenever we want to go somewhere that people want to take a look at you, so
07:30that is so cool.
07:31This is going to easily handle 2,300 miles.
07:34Yes.
07:34Very nice car.
07:35I think so.
07:35I'm real anxious to get to the fairgrounds tonight.
07:40We're at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.
07:42I am here with my family at Back to the 50s.
07:46We work at thekeyguys.com.
07:49It's our family-owned business, and we've been coming here for about 17 years.
07:54I am not familiar with the great race, but I've now heard about it, and it sounds very
08:00cool, and I'm excited to see it.
08:01I do like classic hot rods.
08:03If I could have one, it'd be a little bit too new to be here, but I would love to have
08:08a 64.5 or 65 Mustang Fastback.
08:13Back to the 50s show.
08:15Look at all the people.
08:16Look at all the cars around us.
08:18This is the biggest event in the country every year.
08:20There are 10,000 to 15,000 cars show up registered.
08:24That's not including the people who are coming through the gate.
08:26Pretty cool.
08:27We had a very interesting day today.
08:29We ended up with a really good score overall.
08:31We still came out with an ace.
08:33A seven-second day.
08:34Three seconds of that, we can't be blamed for.
08:36Right before the last checkpoint on the day, we come around a corner, and there's the wonderful
08:40public.
08:40Just decided to park their car in the middle of the road, which, why wouldn't you?
08:44I mean, that's what roads are for, right?
08:45And so we come up, we have to stop behind this car, the car freaks out, we did the right
08:50thing and started yelling curse words at the top of our lungs, and continued on our
08:54way once they got out of our way.
08:56We're trying to make up all the time we lost right there.
08:58We come around a corner, boom, checkpoint, we got caught with three of our seven seconds
09:02on the day right there.
09:06You go to the website, you're going to register, you're going to get online, there's going
09:09to be a two-year waiting list.
09:10Once you get here, you're going to go through what you saw Doug going through.
09:13When you're going to go through inspections, when you get all your stickers, if you haven't
09:16already put them on your car.
09:18There's a lot of stuff on YouTube for the rookies to learn how to do it.
09:21There's a lot to it.
09:23And for you pilots out there, to kind of give you an example of what it's like, it's like
09:27instrument flying for eight hours.
09:29You've got to be so focused all the time, otherwise you can miss a turn.
09:34Just in a blink, you can miss it.
09:35Or your speed may not be right.
09:37Absolutely.
09:38And the only thing you guys need is a 1974 or older vehicle.
09:41And this is the Back to the 50s show.
09:42So everything 64 and older is only allowed here.
09:46But they made an exception for us because we do have cars up to 74 here amongst the show.
09:51So that's pretty cool they made that exception for us.
09:53That's an incredible turnout.
09:54It was so much fun today.
09:56It shook the rust off.
09:57We just had a fantastic time.
09:59Today we're going to be showing you guys how you can prevent rust.
10:13It's a 1968 Corvette, numbers matching big block, four-speed car.
10:17I bought it in October.
10:19I restored it.
10:20Just a great car.
10:20I've taken it on the power tour.
10:21I drive it.
10:22I try to put some miles on it, but not too many because of the original motor.
10:26And we're here today to try to do a little rust prevention.
10:29There's an issue with the frame in that the cross rails and the side rails, I noticed
10:33when I was under the car a thousand times doing the restoration.
10:36You can see little pieces of surface rust up inside the frame rails.
10:40They have drain holes, but I think moisture still gets up there and creates some surface
10:43rust.
10:44So I've blown that out to blow as much of the rust out as possible.
10:47Then you and I had a conversation about it, and you recommended that we use the NHLU spray.
10:52We're going to use a nozzle.
10:53We're going to take this.
10:54We're going to spray it all in the cavities of the frame.
10:56This is also very good that if you guys got engines sitting around like I do, stored,
11:00waiting for a project in the future, the cylinders can get rusty.
11:04So take your sparkler out and spray some of this in the cylinders as well, and that'll
11:07do a nice coating of oil, unlike something that would maybe coat it for a second, then
11:12run off.
11:12This will actually stay.
11:13And then when you go to crank the engine up, it'll just burn out completely.
11:16So, you want to do rust prevention?
11:18Check out NHLU.
11:20Welcome back to more Sam's Garage, presented by NHLU.
11:30At Southfield Classics, we're checking out the brand new SC31T trucks, replicas of the
11:37iconic GM 3100, built from scratch right here in the USA.
11:42These aren't restorations.
11:44They're all-electric hot rods with wheel-wood brakes, custom chassis, and zero maintenance
11:49headaches.
11:51Here we are today at Southfield Classics.
11:53I'm here with Dan Paul.
11:55He is the COO of this manufacturing company of building the most iconic series of GM trucks.
12:01Correct.
12:01It's a 3100 replica that we've built under the new replica car law.
12:08And you guys, these are done to the nines.
12:11Think of it as a hot rod, right?
12:12It's got all the components you would use when building these cars from scratch.
12:16Wheel-wood brakes, quick performance 9-inch for your end, boxed in frame, because you guys
12:21built the frame from scratch.
12:22Correct.
12:22We do all our own chassis work.
12:24We do all our own body placement, fitment.
12:27All the body panels are built in-house.
12:28So basically everything on this truck is built in-house with all brand new parts.
12:32Now let's talk about the powertrain of these vehicles.
12:34You see, they're absolutely beautiful hot rod trucks.
12:37These are brand new, but they're high voltage, all electric.
12:40And that's what makes them even cooler.
12:42Because you guys, cool is cool, fast is fast.
12:44And I remember being in the kid in the 80s, going to Radio Shack and getting a remote-controlled
12:48car, hearing those sounds and having the fun that you had with them.
12:52Now it's just a bigger version of it.
12:54You're out there, you've got smiles ear to ear because you're in this beautiful truck.
12:58And it just takes you back to your kid because of the noises that you're hearing.
13:01Correct.
13:02It sounds a lot like a, like you said, like a small RC car only amplified by 10.
13:06So you've got a nice whine or a whistle.
13:09But that's the only sound you're going to hear.
13:10If you're in drive mode, regular mode, you can actually creep up on people.
13:14They never hear you coming.
13:15Absolutely.
13:16And these have got no issues as far as maintenance goes.
13:20You've got regular maintenance, you've got brakes, you've got tires.
13:22You don't only have any minimal cooling hoses.
13:25And the cooling system is only there to keep the inverter cool, right?
13:27Correct.
13:27It's only there.
13:28It's a low-pressure system.
13:29It only has about five pounds of pressure.
13:31And it's basically just to travel and pump through the system, keep the batteries and
13:34the motor and the inverter cool as you go.
13:37Yeah, no issues as far as reliability goes.
13:39These high-voltage vehicles don't have any of those problems, so it's just nothing but
13:43absolute satisfaction and joy.
13:45Done to the nines, brand-new vehicles.
13:47Every part of them is brand-new.
13:49And through this season on Sam's Garage, we're going to be showing you every bit of these
13:54vehicles, their individual components, and how they're assembled, what makes them new,
13:58and how they're certified.
13:59Correct.
14:00So we're going to try to go through the whole process of how we actually build a vehicle
14:03from scratch, from absolute nothing.
14:05Build up through the whole process.
14:06We actually complete a vehicle by the end of the season.
14:09And if you guys are in the customization industry, you know that if you're wanting a car, let's
14:13say you want a custom car, you're looking at two to five, six years, sometimes even more.
14:18In this case, you're going to have a brand-new manufactured vehicle within six months' time,
14:22and they're going to build it just like that Restomod.
14:24Correct.
14:25We're actually going through the process at least two times.
14:27Sometimes it's multifaceted and multifit.
14:29But what we're trying to do is basically eliminate that time factor to where you don't have to
14:33wait two years to have your Restomod.
14:35This way, you can actually come in, pick your colors, pick your interior, pick your wheels
14:38and tires, and you're on the road in six months.
14:41And these things are all built right here in America.
14:43GM-certified bits and pieces.
14:44We're going to show you how to put them together.
14:46The original frame rails, they get modified right here in Brazzleton, Georgia.
14:49They get assembled.
14:50They are fully 100% USA made, and that makes them even cooler.
14:54It does, and it helps with a lot of the tariffs that are going on now.
14:58We try to keep as much as we can in the United States to keep everything moving forward.
15:01All right, Dan.
15:01So let's see if somebody's interested in purchasing one of these vehicles.
15:04What steps do they have to take?
15:05So the process basically is to contact us, come out, talk with us.
15:08We'll sit down in the office, and we'll go over, build projections, what you want it
15:12to look like, and then we'll talk about price and value.
15:15Usually what we do is we take a deposit up front to get started, get all the parts in.
15:18Once we have all the parts in place, then we start production on the vehicle.
15:21So you can go to Southfield Classics, come on out, and you can get yourself a brand new
15:26SC-31T.
15:35Sam's Garage is presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
15:40It's brought to you by the following companies.
15:51Welcome back to Sam's Garage, presented by NHOU.
16:12We're getting ready for the 2026 NOPE Nationals.
16:16And nothing says iconic like a 93 MK4 Toyota Supra.
16:21From its legendary twin-turbo inline-six to 2,000-plus horsepower single-turbo builds,
16:27this car rewrote the rulebook.
16:31Getting ready for the NOPE Nationals.
16:33By the time you guys see this, you'll be thinking about 2026 September NOPE Nationals.
16:37Next week, September 13th and 14th, we have a big show going on.
16:41And this right here is one of the most iconic cars that is part of that show.
16:44So this right here is a 1993 MK4 Toyota Supra.
16:48It's funny, because behind me is its bigger brother.
16:51Back in the day when they made these two cars, this was the rich man Supra.
16:55It's identically the same as far as the chassis and powertrain goes, but non-turbo.
16:58Then later on, this became the poor man Supra.
17:02So that's kind of funny.
17:08What made this vehicle so iconic was the power plant that's in it.
17:11This is an inline-six twin-turbo.
17:13Made 320 horsepower from the factory.
17:16With some bolt-ons and a little bit of tuning, you can make 415 at the wheels.
17:20But if you were to remove the factory turbos and put on a big single turbo with equal runners on the exhaust manifold,
17:27you can make upwards of 2,000, 3,000 horsepower, depending on how well-built the engine block is.
17:33So the engine is very, very, very strong, popular for that reason.
17:38It's one of the dominating engines on the street.
17:41That's why they're so iconic.
17:43Forever, they've been completely supported by the aftermarket community, and nothing has slowed down since.
17:48So this right here is very iconic, but it's got a couple problems.
17:51This is an old-school build.
17:53It's absolutely beautiful.
17:54It's kept itself in very nice shape.
17:56It was built in the late 90s.
17:57It's got a wide-body kit on it, and it's got the original spark plugs tying both everything since 1992, which makes it 32 years old.
18:05So we have a misfire, and we're going to diagnose the misfire.
18:12First thing I would do to diagnose a misfire, this thing has problems.
18:15We do have a check engine light for a code 14.
18:17What happens is that wire is really small, and it starts to corrode under the hood.
18:22Right at the connector, about two inches from the pin, it's all green.
18:26So what I did was I went back in about two or three inches.
