00:00First, we hit the road with 135 classics in The Great Race.
00:23A nine-day rally where timing, teamwork, and family fuel every mile.
00:27Then we go deeper into the heart of the journey, where vintage flatheads and father-daughter
00:33teams carry the spirit of the competition across 2,300 miles.
00:38Back in the shop, Southfield Classics takes us under the skin of their all-electric SC31T,
00:44classic lines hiding a high-tech chassis.
00:47And finally, Sam unveils the long-awaited CRNSX, an icon reborn, 15 seasons in the making.
00:57We have 135-plus cars in The Great Race.
01:04Check points along the way that they don't know in advance, and so the goal is you're
01:08going to stay on target from start to finish.
01:11It's like family to me.
01:12Keeping it maintained, keeping it running hard, it's a complete family member.
01:16It's an experience.
01:17All the workers, all the towns that have been welcoming us.
01:20Winning an ace in The Great Race is just, it's one of the things that just lifts you up.
01:24Were we on time and everybody else was wrong?
01:27Were they on time and we were wrong?
01:28I guess we'll find out tonight.
01:30The Great Race is brought to you by Car Capsule.
01:33We preserve, protect, and present the finest vehicles in the world.
01:38So what we're doing here this morning is going to be getting our instructions so we can do
01:42the start of the race.
01:43Today we're going to be going to the Iowa 80 stop, which is the country's biggest truck
01:47stop.
01:48We're going to check out a couple of museums as well.
01:49And then we're going to go on to Waterloo.
01:51I don't know where we're spending the night, but I'm sure Doug knows where we're spending
01:54the night.
01:55Because remember guys, my job here is to drive the car.
01:58Drive the car, that's it.
02:00Last night when the race finished, the driver of the 110 Camaro, Tim Kiley, came to me and
02:10said that the pedal goes to the floor on the brakes.
02:13And so we pulled it inside.
02:16We thought there was something going on with the brakes.
02:18It turns out that the brakes were good.
02:21We jacked it up on the right to bleed the right side front.
02:25We jacked it up on the left.
02:26And when we did, we found that the wheel was wobbling.
02:29Well, the wheel wobbling was the actual issue that was making the brakes bad.
02:33So we went ahead and pulled the wheel off and found that one of the wheel bearings had gone bad.
02:38He's busy working on the car in the morning.
02:43I'm getting the instructions.
02:44Gotta hustle to get them all figured out.
02:46Because once we start driving, there ain't no writing going on.
02:49So it's a hoot.
02:50So this is the morning of the race and we have to get the car going.
02:54It's a lot more complicated than some of the cars on the race because it's older.
02:59It needs a little more love.
03:01Like for example, this morning I see that we lost the cap off our magneto.
03:05And so we just had to take some electrical tape and put the magneto back in place.
03:11We have to add oil like any other car.
03:14It doesn't drive like a normal car.
03:16This is your brake.
03:17So it's a hand operated brake instead of a foot operated brake.
03:20This is your shift lever.
03:23So those are your gears.
03:25Your throttle is in the middle here, which is a little bit weird.
03:28And then you have this advance and retard which moves the magneto and the distributor up and forward to make it run better.
03:37So it's a lot of things to kind of keep moving when you're driving a car like this because of the ancient technology.
03:45Actually this motor that's in the car was designed in 1905.
03:50It was originally designed by Mercedes out of Germany.
03:54And then America and France bought the plans to it in about 1910 and started putting it in their vehicles.
04:00And so this is a 1918 and it uses 1905 technology.
04:06It's a whole new world.
04:07I'm used to more of the racing style, faster, who gets there first kind of thing, drag racing or anything like that.
04:16So this is a whole different aspect of everything.
04:19You know, your time.
04:20You have to be places at certain times.
04:22Everything is so detailed and down to the very second.
04:25So it's very different but it's a lot of fun because of that.
04:29It like keeps your mind going constantly.
04:31There's so much to think about and everything.
04:33It's really something else.
04:34I'm a gearhead in training so pretty much everything is new.
04:37Over the last few years I've been exposing myself to different types of racing,
04:41different everything, automotive, gearhead.
04:44So this has been an amazing experience.
04:48I drove yesterday.
04:49I was definitely nervous.
04:51It helped that all of us, since everybody in the car, it was our first time.
04:55It was really helpful.
04:57I felt more comfortable making mistakes.
04:59And that's part of what I try to bring to the table,
05:02is sharing that I struggle.
05:05Sharing what it's like that we all start somewhere.
05:15Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU.
05:20Brought to you by the following companies.
05:22.
05:25Welcome back to Sam's Garage,
05:53presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
05:56The Great Race isn't just about speed, it's about spirit.
06:00Families, friends, and vintage machines tackling 2,300 miles of hidden checkpoints,
06:06classic engines, and unforgettable stops.
06:09From flatheads to first-timers, this is Heritage in Motion.
06:13The Great Race is brought to you by Rodden Supply.
06:17We don't just sell them, we race them.
06:19Our car is doing really well, because it's a Nissan, right?
06:24It's the only real import here.
06:26The only thing I have is that to adjust the idle up a little bit,
06:29because the year that it sat in Oklahoma, I don't know what happened, maybe it was a gas,
06:33but it's a little too high.
06:34So what I'm going to do is lower it just a little bit,
06:37and I don't even need tools, I just need fingers.
06:39Right here, we're going to go just like that.
06:42You want to adjust your idle on a carburetor setup when it's fully warm.
06:46Complete operating temperature.
06:48And that goes with you guys and your idle screws if you have a mechanical throttle body,
06:52if you have fuel injected.
06:53Make sure it's completely operating temperature.
06:56The largest truck stop in the country.
06:58You can see that we're in Tornado Alley by all the flags with the wind.
07:01This is pretty cool, because they're giving everybody a free tank of gas.
07:05And when you guys finish up, come in, we'll top you off.
07:07That's a really big deal.
07:09It's a really big thank you, guys.
07:10We really appreciate you doing that.
07:12Whatever grade these guys want, over 150 cars.
07:15That's saying something.
07:16And this is a very iconic truck stop.
07:18It's even got a museum attached.
07:21Very cool.
07:21If you guys are in the area and you're coming through,
07:23you've got to stop here whether you need gas or not.
07:25We're on our way to Moline, Iowa.
07:29I think it takes a lot of pressure off of them.
07:32They have less to worry about.
07:34They're consumed when they're in that vehicle during the day.
07:37They're checking the boxes, not missing any turns, speeds.
07:42They're reading everything, managing the right speeds.
07:46If they develop a problem, we typically have been able to provide the tools.
07:52And if necessary, go hunt for an automobile parts shop to get the parts that are needed.
07:58Because those things do happen.
08:01A couple of years ago, Curtis thought he had some brake tools that he needed.
08:05So I ran to the store, bought the brake tools that he needed so he could get his car back together.
08:11But it's that type of support.
08:13He didn't have to worry about it.
08:15We were there.
08:16This is a 1930 Ford Model A, and there's not much of the Model A left of it.
08:23It started out as a pickup truck, a pickup roadster.
08:26So the bed is gone, the fenders are gone, sideboards are gone.
08:29We took off everything that you can to save weight.
08:32Pumped up the engine, putting out 120 horse, and we're doing great.
08:36Now, all those things takes away points, right?
08:39You get penalized in some way or another?
08:41The way that we did it is that we don't get penalized.
08:44You're kidding me.
08:46So everything on the car is done in a way to not get penalized.
08:50So we still run original brakes, original transmission, original rear end, 6-volt car.
08:56Wow, that's impressive.
08:58That is very cool.
08:59So how did you guys do today?
09:00We got a one-minute because we knocked it by one place, and we erased it.
09:04It's difficult catching up one car at a time, right?
09:07So we had to do six of them, so we had to really go balls out and took over enough cars.
09:13Isn't that the funnest part, though?
09:15Oh, it's great.
09:15Next time, if you could tell me what exit to get out of, that'd be great.
09:18Yeah, you know, Sam, we weren't the only ones that missed that little spot, you know,
09:22but next time I'll make sure that we're doing the mile markers this way we take a look at.
09:27And we've got to be far enough in front of it all the time, so that happens.
09:33I wish it happened more often.
09:34Yeah.
09:35So we went 21 miles out of our way, had to come 21 miles back,
09:38and then we were chasing everyone down, then we missed the right-hand turn.
09:42We missed it quickly and got right back on course, still chased everybody else down,
09:46and we got, what, 18 minutes?
09:49So we cut that time by 22 minutes.
09:51It's a mile a minute, right?
09:52Yeah.
09:53Well, at 60 miles an hour, but we were running, yeah, we were way over there.
09:57It was so much fun.
09:59It was unbelievable.
09:59You guys, today, vehicles have gotten double the price, sometimes triple the price,
10:14and we want to protect that investment and make sure that vehicle can last as long as possible on the road,
10:18and that's where NHLU comes in.
10:20We have a completely new product.
10:22NHLU Boss Wax Hybrid.
10:24Vehicles come in with major corrosion.
10:26And I don't mean, like, I mean surface rust, but stuff that you shouldn't see on the undercarriage of the vehicle.
10:33And that's the beginning, right?
10:34That's the beginning.
10:35And so people say they want to use our Boss Wax, great.
10:38Boss Wax really isn't designed to go over rust.
10:41And so we're happy to remove this rust and, you know, play games and whatever, you know, to get the surface the way we need it.
10:48So what we did was we said, okay, how can we mitigate that rust and still offer them the warranty?
10:54And so what we've done is we've made a product, and it's compatible with GMC.
10:59It'll displace moisture and oxygen.
11:01When it does, it's creeping, and it takes about three months before it solidifies and sails, and so it allows that to pass through.
11:09Then it sails, and you're not worried about encapsulation.
11:12You know, when you think about it, the maintenance is pennies to the dollar compared to replacing it and the investment money that you lose.
11:17Cheap insurance.
11:18Welcome back to more Sam's Garage, presented by NHOU.
11:32We're back at Southfield Classics, where heritage meets high tech.
11:36This time, it's all about the chassis.
11:39Boxed frames, coilovers, air ride, and regen braking.
11:43Built from the ground up for the all-electric SC31T.
11:47Classic looks, cutting-edge performance.
11:49Continuing on with our theme here at Southfield Classics, last year we showed you guys how they build the cab, and this year we're going to go over the chassis.
12:00And the chassis is really cool because they start with original frame rails that they modify to make the truck overall.
12:06And this chassis is filled with all the hot rod components that we're all used to.
12:11So this is an actual original chassis that we used that was underneath one of our mule trucks, one of our test trucks.
12:17So this is where we started all the modification process, trying to figure out where everything actually went in place before we started building our new chassis.
12:24So you start with a rail.
12:25We start with the rails.
12:26Totally plain.
12:27Correct.
12:27Nothing on it.
12:28Nothing on it.
12:28You box it in.
12:29We box all the frame rails, and then we start adding the regular hot rod components, the four nine-inch rear end, ladder bar suspension.
12:37We make all our cross bracing, all the new stuff, wheelwood brakes, quick performance, nine-inch rear end.
12:43You've got a four-link setup in the back.
12:45This particular one also has the option of an air-back system.
12:48Correct.
12:49So this one has RideTech air ride system on it, and that way it can basically air it out all the way to the ground.
12:54That is very cool.
12:55But if you wanted to, you can get this with coilovers.
12:58Yeah, so there's two options on our chassis for the three-pack system is coilovers and air rides.
13:03With the bigger truck, the six-pack system that has the further range, it is air ride only.
13:08And I'm noticing that you've got a four-puck caliper in the front.
13:11You're going to go with a huge six-puck, 14-inch rotor.
13:15You've got standard brakes in the rear, four-puck as well.
13:18And the reason being because this high-voltage vehicle has regen braking.
13:21Correct.
13:22With the regen, if you're running the regen, you can actually turn it on and turn it off.
13:26So you can use it if you don't.
13:27And you can intensify the regen.
13:28And you can intensify the regen.
13:30And so we didn't really need big brakes because of the regen system.
13:33And it automatically breaks your motor as you let off on the acceleration.
13:38And then basically your brakes are just to stop and be able to completely stop.
13:41That is incredible.
13:42Everything here looks like it also will fit under the factory body with no raising the floor of the bed.
13:48No, and that was a big deal for us.
13:50You know, we're building trucks.
13:51We wanted to be able to use it as a truck, and it'd still be a truck.
13:54So for us, we wanted to keep standard bed height but be able to get all our components underneath it.
13:59Absolutely.
14:00Those little luxury vehicles.
14:01Yeah.
14:01That's what makes this older-looking vehicle.
14:03Little smooth things.
14:05And that's what justifies the price.
14:07Correct.
14:07You're buying a real high-end luxury vehicle that's capable in every way.
14:12Like we say, it's bespoke.
14:13So we're actually building it to the high-end by hand, in-house.
14:18We try to take care and pride in what we're building.
14:21You know, that's what it's all about.
14:22And high-performance components that'll last a long time.
14:25So that's really nice.
14:26I love this.
14:26This is a hot-rod chassis.
14:28Correct.
14:28It's super high-end.
14:29We want to make sure that we keep it.
14:31Like I said, we have to be able, as a manufacturer, to warranty it.
14:34So in order to do that, it takes a little bit better quality parts.
14:37So we want to make sure we use the top-of-the-line best quality we can get.
14:41High-end.
14:41What are we looking at here?
14:42So this is our SC31T chassis.
14:45This is a brand-new chassis.
14:46And what we're doing is we're modifying the battery pack location and how it mounts in
14:51the truck.
14:52We're building it out from scratch so that it misses the firewall.
14:54This one has coil-overs on it.
14:56QA1s.
14:57QA1s.
14:57See, there you go.
14:58Another well-known name out there.
15:00This is like a pre-fit stage, the way we've got it sitting down with the bed on it.
15:03We'll fit the cab one more time before it goes to paint, and then we'll be assembling.
15:07And this white color, is that a primer?
15:09What is that?
15:09No.
15:10So that's flat white.
15:11That's actually...
15:12Is that the final color?
15:12That is going to be the final color.
15:14So this truck was put together for SEMA show, and we're actually going back and kind of
15:18fixing some of the issues that we had with it before.
15:20Is this going to be one of the ones that are for sale?
15:22Yeah, this one will be for sale.
15:25Well, join us next week when we come back to Southfield Plastics, and we show you guys
15:29the motor setup and the battery pack.
15:35Sam's Garage is presented by NH Oil Undercoating.
15:40It's brought to you by the following companies.
16:01Welcome back to Sam's Garage, presented by NHOU.
16:10With 15 seasons in the making, Sam finally brings out the legendary CR-NSX.
16:18Born from a CR-X with an NSX swap back in 2000, this one-of-a-kind build blends history,
16:25horsepower, and heart.
16:27A true Nopi icon reborn for the next generation.
16:30It's hard to imagine that it's been 15 seasons for this guy to finally make it on Sam's Garage.
16:38So back in 1999, Madavi Motorsports opened up, me and my brother Arish, and we were doing
16:43Honda swaps in droves.
16:45We had done so many in the first year and a half of Madavi Motorsports that we got bored.
16:51And so what happened was, we got thinking and said, let's do something totally crazy that
16:56no one's ever done.
16:57So we got a CR-X from one of our customers.
16:59I was able to get a complete NSX chunk that included the subframe, which is what the NSX engine
17:05sits in.
17:06So we took the whole unit, cut out the floor in the trunk of this car, and installed this.
17:10Back in 2000, me, John Kaufman, and Hugh Hamilton.
17:15John Kaufman and I, he was KMS Engineering.
17:17He built a lot of the cylinder heads.
17:19He was racing.
17:19He was an engine builder and machinist.
17:21Unfortunately, he is no longer with us.
17:23So he helped us build the chassis.
17:26Took it back to Madavi Motorsports.
17:28Hugh Hamilton, who is also, unfortunately, no longer with us, helped to wire up the whole thing.
17:33So the whole thing is wired up with Honda wiring.
17:36So we took this back out, cleaned it all up, it runs like a champ, and we're going to take
17:41it and showcase it at the show.
17:42John Pops also helped us maintain and fix the wiring on this and keep it up to date later
17:48in the years.
17:48Second decade, we've had it.
17:50He is also no longer with us, unfortunately.
17:53All the talent that has helped build this car and made it so successful is no longer with
17:57us.
17:57However, Albert from UAB, that's why it says UFO by UAB.
18:02Ultimate Auto Boutique.
18:04He was one of the pioneers in fiberglass work back when the Nopi Nationals was very popular
18:09in the 2000s.
18:10People spent a lot of money back then doing fiberglass work and fusing headlights and
18:14different stuff into their cars from different model cars.
18:16So as you can see, this used to be a solid metal Honda CRX.
18:27Back in the day, because Honda Drag Racing was so big, they had one piece fiberglass front
18:32end.
18:32So Albert took this and called me up one day and said, Sam, you know, do you think I can
18:36run with my imagination and do what I want to do?
18:37I said, you know what, Albert, do what you want to do, right?
18:39So this is what he did.
18:41He covered the front wheels.
18:42He made it wide body.
18:43He put a wide body in the rear, cut the doors in half, built brand new fiberglass doors that
18:49are in half, made all the aerodynamics that you see underneath.
18:53On top, there's an icebox underneath that lid.
18:56There's a fan with two scoops, one going into the turbo, the other one going into the super
19:00intercooler.
19:01Because we did put a super intercooler along with the Mitsubishi 20G upgraded turbo on
19:05this, it made 456 wheels at nine pounds of boost.
19:09We also had a shot of nitrous on it.
19:11Back in 2002, we ran it at Atlanta Dragway and it ran 11.6 at 130 miles an hour.
19:21And that was when we just had nitrous on it.
19:24We took it home, took the nitrous off of it, put the turbocharger on it.
19:27So this is an iconic car.
19:29It's called the CRNSX because it's a mix between a CRX and an NSX.
19:34So I love it.
19:36You can't find a lot of this stuff anymore.
19:39Madhavi Motorsports was all about doing engine swaps.
19:41We built more horsepower than anyone I know in town because of all the volumes of cars
19:45that we built.
19:46So we're going to take this car to Echo Park Speedway, September 13th, 14th, Nopi Nationals
19:52next year, 2026, third weekend of September.
19:55If you guys missed it this year, make sure to check out Nopi, Google it, look it up.
19:59We'll have the Nationals again in 2026.
20:01We're going to see you there.
20:02And hopefully you guys will also see the CRNSX.
20:04Be sure to check out Sam's Garage on these other media platforms.
20:20Send us questions and feedback to info at samsgaragetv.com.
20:25From century-old racers to cutting-edge EVs and one unforgettable CRNSX, this episode celebrates
20:34the past, powers the present, and looks to the future for performance.
20:38Thanks for watching Sam's Garage, where every build has a story and every story drives us
