00:00And how you we get, you'd be very, very rich.
00:03This season was set for the most extraordinary, unpredictable drama.
00:07The David Power jockey's card, half a million pounds to the winner.
00:11Everybody is a rival.
00:14The competition is going to be hotter than ever.
00:20It is a very dangerous way to make a living.
00:23I just felt my pelvis break, everything's snuck.
00:30To win is a dream.
00:33When you see the winning force, everything slows down.
00:36Go on, Brady!
00:52At Boracot this afternoon, hearts will be broken, but legends will also be made.
00:58Aintree is ready.
01:01What will happen in this year's world's most famous horse race, the Randox Grand National.
01:10To have a ride in a race like the Grand National, it's a privilege.
01:15Massive day in the racing calendar.
01:17To win the Grand National is the dream.
01:21The whole atmosphere is extraordinary.
01:24The butterflies and the anticipation, just crazy.
01:27Is the pinnacle of our sport.
01:31The best horses against each other.
01:33A very, very competitive race.
01:36It's the best and most unpredictable ten minutes in sport.
01:40Plus the fact, it's worth a million pounds.
01:44The jumps are bigger.
01:45The distance is longer.
01:48Hang on, Toast.
01:50Help!
01:50Anything can happen.
01:52Anything can happen.
02:02At the start of your career, someone said, which race would you like to win?
02:08I'd like to win the Grand National.
02:09And I was lucky enough to have won it twice.
02:12Oh, God!
02:13The thrill of winning the Grand National with I.M. Maximus was fantastic.
02:29Anytime you have a big win in your life, you want to do it again.
02:33So in the last hundred years, there have been three back-to-back winners.
02:37But if anyone's going to do it again, it'll be Willie Mullins.
02:39Good, that looks good.
02:52I was born in a saddle.
02:53My first memories are just horses, horses, horses.
02:56Did you give him a pick of grass?
02:57Yeah.
02:58Okay, do one big.
02:59You know, my father's a trainer.
03:01I picked up knowledge from him over the years without realising it.
03:05If I had a problem, I'd say, what would my father do?
03:08I'd just say, well, he'd have done this, that, or the other.
03:11And then it became easier.
03:13Well done.
03:14Racing has great dynasties.
03:17The Mullins is one of the greatest horse racing dynasties.
03:21It goes back three, four generations.
03:23It really is extraordinary.
03:26This is our riding outboard.
03:27Four to five horses for each staff member to ride.
03:30Patrick does that, all that.
03:32Which is a tough job, matching riders with horses.
03:36Not one that I'd like to do it.
03:37That's why I give it to Patrick.
03:39Feel your eye too big, make sure your girth's tight.
03:41That's the same way.
03:42That's the same way too, yeah.
03:44It's a family business.
03:45So Patrick, my son, is very involved in it.
03:49He's an assistant trainer here.
03:51He helps run the show.
03:53My day-to-day job is being in the yard and being involved with the horses.
03:58David, he's coming back to you.
03:59I'm assisting my father in training, basically trying not to get in his way too much.
04:04I'm learning a lot from talking to him and from watching him.
04:08He worked well, didn't he?
04:09Yes, ran on Sunday.
04:10He was young, brilliant.
04:12We will clash on several issues, but he has this very annoying habit of being right most of the times.
04:17You're happy with him?
04:18Yeah, that's fine.
04:19Okay.
04:20He's kind of quite old-fashioned in how he trains.
04:22He likes to train on his eye.
04:24That looks good.
04:25Are you going to go up sides, anything?
04:27Yeah.
04:27Being the only son, it would make sense that at some stage, I suppose, I'll take over.
04:33But I don't see Willie retiring to the Bahamas anytime soon, no.
04:38That'll do me for you.
04:40Growing up in a yard like that for Patrick, huge pressure, so much achievement.
04:44But at the same time, he'll know how lucky he is too.
04:47Beauty capture, perfect for me.
04:49As well, looking after the yard in close hutton.
04:53Patrick is an amateur jockey, fantastic amateur.
04:55He can't really turn professional because he's too heavy.
04:59I've managed to keep my weight just about right for being an amateur.
05:03But it was never in my head to be a professional jockey.
05:07Well, Alex, your moves okay?
05:09Patrick Mullins is technically an amateur jockey.
05:12He made that choice, I think, for a number of reasons.
05:14He's a big guy, and amateurs can be heavier than pros.
05:18The downside is you don't get paid to ride because you're an amateur.
05:21And he has broken every record in terms of amateur status.
05:27I'm 35 now.
05:28I'd like to ride as long as I can.
05:30And the dream race is the Grand National.
05:33This will be my sixth Grand National.
05:35My first ride in the National, I fell at Beecher's Brook.
05:38My second ride in the National, I fell in the chair.
05:40My owner's gone as well.
05:42My third ride in the National, I finished last.
05:44I finished fourth once.
05:46That was my best.
05:47Borough, say four.
05:48Such an iconic race.
05:50To win the Grand National, it's the dream.
05:52To put my name at power of that history.
05:55It would just...
05:56Nothing would be better.
06:02This is Nick Rocket.
06:05Riding the National later.
06:07So Katie's getting them all rugged up.
06:09And if you're getting brushed over and ready later.
06:15He's cheeky, but he's enthusiastic.
06:17He enjoys his job.
06:19Nick Rocket's price is 33 to 1.
06:21When you look through his form, there's bits there.
06:24But look, he's an outsider.
06:26Can he win the Grand National at 33 to 1?
06:29We love a fairy tale, but that's pushing it.
06:32He's not in the favour, but I have a very good team.
06:38We'll see what happens.
06:39We'll get them all out of here now.
06:41Nick Rocket, among six horses for Willie Mullins, he's got a seriously strong hand.
06:46He's going all out to win it again.
06:47The world is watching.
06:53On a day, the city of Liverpool bursts with pride.
06:57Gates are now open.
06:58Gates are now open.
07:00The Grand National is probably the most watched race worldwide.
07:08Tens of millions of people watching it.
07:12This is the one race, probably, that transcends our sport.
07:15It's our Open, our Wimbledon.
07:17Yeah, it's big.
07:19Good best of luck today.
07:20Very much.
07:22No, it's been cooking in soon.
07:24The dog is all getting nervous.
07:27We've been in early this morning and sorted everything out.
07:31Popping the colours up, getting the saddles ready.
07:33And yeah, stage is set for the big day of the year.
07:36All right, gents.
07:37Hey, up.
07:38He's the man from the tree.
07:40He's fine looking out.
07:42Johnny doesn't ignore the man from the tree.
07:44He's like that.
07:47All right.
07:48It'll be chaos in the end of the year, but Harry knows what he's doing.
07:51All right.
07:51Also in with a good chance of winning the Randox Grand National this year is Paul Nicholls.
07:57He's throwing plenty at it.
07:58He's the 14-time champion trainer, and he's won the race before.
08:02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:02You want to be as close to doing the first hand as you can.
08:05Grand National is a meeting I really love.
08:07Just the whole thing, the characters, the people.
08:10But to me, it's the winning.
08:11The Neptune's alone.
08:12In 2012, good old Neptune Clones, 33 to 1, won the National.
08:16If you end up winning that, that makes such a massive difference.
08:22Willie's got a good team to run in the race this year, numbers and class.
08:25But my horses will be there on the day to do their best, and we'll be trained to win.
08:31It's a big, long preparation.
08:45A lot of these horses have been trained all season with the Grand National in mind.
08:49In the last couple of years, I don't think we've had a runner.
08:51You've got the right horses, and in just that position, I think we've probably got horses that are going to go into it with a bit of a chance.
08:57Hey, come on.
08:59I'm running five in the National.
09:01A horse that runs in there needs plenty of stamina, plenty of ability, and an older horse with plenty of experience.
09:06I think experience helps.
09:09That's Stay Away Fae.
09:10Been running well this year.
09:11This is Brave Man's game.
09:13Got a touch of class, and that's what you need.
09:15This is 300 through 5.
09:16He's in good shape.
09:18This is Hitman.
09:19He looks good.
09:19He's had a great season.
09:20And then we've got Kandu Kid up there with Harry.
09:23The one that I really think has got a great chance was Kandu Kid,
09:27who won the Coral Gold Cup in Newbury back in November.
09:30Horses that win the Coral Gold Cup normally have a good record in the Grand National.
09:35He felt unbelievable.
09:37He's just a lovely horse.
09:39He's very kind and pretty chilled about life.
09:43He'll run a massive race.
09:44I fancy him anyway.
09:47There's not much more we can do between now and Saturday.
09:58Right.
09:59Just take this lot over now this week.
10:01It's not a race.
10:02They don't need to do too much.
10:03Just a good three-quarter speed all the way back together.
10:06Just let them enjoy themselves.
10:07They've all worked hard last week.
10:10This week is exercising and keep them fresh and well and making sure everything's OK.
10:14Do you feel all right, Harry?
10:15Yeah, great.
10:17Kandu Kid's in some really good shape.
10:19And he loved the sunshine.
10:20He loved the ground on Saturday running.
10:22Yeah, very happy with him.
10:23They all look good.
10:25Paul Nicholls has got five potential runners in the Grand National,
10:27which gives him a bit of a headache and a conundrum
10:29trying to find the right jockey for the right horse.
10:32Well, so if he runs in the Grand National Saturday,
10:35we can find a jockey three or four days before the race
10:38and we haven't got anyone to ride him.
10:40He'd been massively let down.
10:43Bryony had agreed to ride him a month ago,
10:46but she's got to run the big race.
10:48I asked Johnny Burke.
10:49He said yes.
10:51To ride in a race at the Grand National for Paul was nice.
10:55So I was obviously excited and looking forward to it.
10:58So then I'm dealt with this dilemma of the surreal position
11:01on the Monday for the Grand National
11:03to get a call from William Mullins.
11:06Jockeys are competitive.
11:08They want to be on the horse with the best chance
11:10and that will mean occasionally having to let a trainer down.
11:13I took the easy option and I rang my agent.
11:15I said, I'm sorry, but this one's for you.
11:17You're going to have to ring Paul.
11:20So he made the phone call
11:21and to say Paul didn't take it well
11:23is to say lightly, basically.
11:26He went nothing short of mad.
11:28It can't be all day.
11:30Someone rang him up and said,
11:31sorry, I've accepted a ride.
11:33Yeah, that's all you do.
11:34Yeah, yeah.
11:35You know?
11:35I can get asked again.
11:37Right.
11:38It's something that Paul Nicholls
11:40would have never encountered before.
11:41Yeah, I can see why he lost the plot.
11:44I just don't like letting the owners stay
11:45and that's the thing.
11:46You don't like messing people about.
11:47Grand National Day at Aintree.
12:03Get ready, everybody,
12:04for unscripted, captivating drama.
12:10It's a race that makes legends
12:12but also shatters dreams.
12:16Have a good day.
12:18Aintree, we love going there.
12:20There's lunches and pretty good parties.
12:23It's just really good fun.
12:24Good luck with all your runners
12:25and everything today.
12:26This is going to sound totally bizarre
12:28but Sam Quek,
12:29our gold medal winning hockey player,
12:31she's just announced live on air
12:32that you're her celebrity crush.
12:35Ollie Bell came up to me
12:36and said, listen,
12:36I've got a bit of a request.
12:39Get in there.
12:40Mickey, I love you.
12:41That's Aintree.
12:42I can't believe you came over.
12:43Well, I wouldn't miss this for the world.
12:46Sort of thing that wouldn't happen at Cheltenham
12:47because probably you're being too serious.
12:50Right, today's the day.
12:51Today's the day.
12:52Right.
12:53Absolutely.
12:54This is Highland,
12:55Mickey Henderson's best chance in a long time.
12:58Highland, who's a young horse
13:00but doing very, very well
13:02and is on the up.
13:03If he learns a bit from this year
13:04and wins it next year,
13:05that'll be fine.
13:06A knicker will be riding him.
13:09If you talk to me,
13:10I'll drag you up.
13:10Governor's record in the Grand National
13:13has been a bit hit and miss.
13:17I know that he'd love to win it.
13:19It's a race that's evaded him.
13:21Have a lovely day.
13:22And you.
13:23You have a good day.
13:24Back a winner.
13:25You won't be mine.
13:26We've never won the Grand National.
13:29For 45 years, something goes wrong.
13:32But if your luck goes your way,
13:34you've always got that little chance.
13:37Foyne-Avon, the Foyne-Avon year.
13:39And now with all this mayhem,
13:42Foyne-Avon has gone off at his own.
13:44A complete outsider.
13:46Won by a complete fluke.
13:48Foyne-Avon wins the National.
13:49But that is the Grand National.
13:51It's what it can do.
13:52The Grand National's the people's race
13:56because of the small man,
13:58the underdog thing.
14:00And if you train a winner at the National
14:01or you ride a winner at the National,
14:03it's life-changing.
14:06Hey, bubs.
14:07Cheeky boy.
14:08You've got a bit of shine to it.
14:10Grand, yeah.
14:11All happy.
14:12Get his head settled.
14:13Just put the saddle on the horse.
14:16And that, for me,
14:17was probably the one time
14:18we actually take a deep breath.
14:20You get a bit of a tingle
14:21and be proud of yourself.
14:22And I think that's probably
14:23the first time I'd ever said to myself
14:24that I was proud of myself.
14:33Normal Warren Hill grass.
14:34Just drop to the back on her
14:35and look after her a little bit, OK?
14:37She can do it normal
14:38like Warren Hill grass.
14:39So I predominantly train flat horses.
14:41We're based in Newmarket here,
14:43which is home of flat racing.
14:44Who's this, Heron?
14:45I'm just starting off
14:46as a trainer in this industry.
14:49I've only been going for five months.
14:51We've had a fantastic start.
14:53Flat horses have running well
14:54and we've had eight winners now.
14:56Up the farm, please.
14:57Just steady with him.
14:58Up the farm.
14:59I'm not from a wealthy family
15:00by any means.
15:01When I left school,
15:02I was working on a building site.
15:03Being from an Irish family,
15:05horse racing was always
15:06in the background growing up.
15:08And I got hooked on this idea
15:09of training horses.
15:10Go round the golf course,
15:12canter.
15:12Just literally a hat canter.
15:14When I set my sights on something,
15:16I want to try and get
15:17to the highest level.
15:20Oh, you rug slip buddy.
15:21Come here.
15:22What have you done?
15:24Horan Zuderi is an absolute dude.
15:26You couldn't have asked
15:27for an easy horse to train.
15:29He does have a bit
15:30of a sensitive side to him.
15:32Yeah, he's a real character.
15:34Knows how to show up
15:35for the cameras.
15:37The owner of Horan Zuderi,
15:38we were at the races one day
15:39and he said to me
15:40he's going to try
15:41and buy this horse
15:42in the sale
15:42four weeks away
15:43from the Grand National.
15:45He was trained by William Allens
15:46but we were more surprised
15:48when we got him for 50 grand
15:49and I suppose
15:50your initial worries are
15:51what's wrong with the horse?
15:52Have we missed something?
15:55He was in our yards
15:56quite recently
15:56but you know,
15:57it's a very difficult race.
15:59He just wasn't quite up
16:00to the level of ability
16:01that we wanted.
16:03Well, you take the risk
16:04that your horse
16:05will come back to bite you
16:06but you can't keep every horse.
16:08You know,
16:08you've got to turn them over
16:10and try and get younger horses
16:11and hope that you might
16:12find a better one.
16:15Most of our horses
16:16live on a straw bed
16:17but we felt he was
16:18a little bit sensitive
16:19so we've moved him
16:20onto the wood shavings.
16:22When he came over
16:22from William Allens
16:23he had a pretty nasty
16:24lung infection.
16:25There was a small percentage
16:26of me that was worried
16:27we might not get him
16:28to the Grand National.
16:29After his first
16:30serious piece of work
16:31for us
16:32we had to have
16:33the vet look at him.
16:34Hello darling.
16:36When he did arrive
16:37he was maybe
16:37a little bit flat
16:38a little bit tired
16:39but now he's dragging
16:41us around the canters
16:42he's got a bit of spark
16:43in him
16:43a bit of life in him.
16:45William Mullins
16:46sold Taranzo Derry.
16:47He didn't sell him
16:48because he thought
16:48he'd win the National.
16:49It's brilliantly bonkers.
16:51I know we throw out
16:52some stories in the National
16:53but this will be a big one.
16:56Horacean Dory
16:57I think is his name
16:58but
16:58I'm not very good
16:59at French to be honest.
17:01I struggle with English
17:02a little bit.
17:04We're lucky to have
17:04Kieran Gethins
17:05riding the horse
17:06an experienced jockey.
17:08Kieran's never sat
17:09on him before
17:09in a race
17:10but he's been
17:11heavily involved
17:12in helping us
17:12prepare him for the race.
17:14Horacean Derry
17:14has never jumped
17:15a Grand National fence
17:16so obviously
17:17that's something
17:17we need to teach him.
17:20So big fence
17:20it's a fair old task
17:22for a horse to get over.
17:24Gonna take some jumping.
17:26It'll be good.
17:26I'll let you decide
17:29how much you want
17:29to do with him.
17:30Yeah, if he jumps twice
17:31I'll be happy
17:32to be honest.
17:33Very important
17:34this schooling session
17:35goes very well.
17:37If he doesn't take to it
17:38probably he's not ready
17:39for the Grand National.
17:40So not only are they
17:44giving it plenty of height
17:45they've got to give it
17:45plenty of length as well
17:46so you've got to be
17:47a real athlete
17:49to be able to get over it.
17:55Here we go, yeah.
18:00He got over it nicely.
18:02It's not small, is it?
18:04Fucking not small.
18:04Can you get off the ground
18:08all right, Kai?
18:09How's it going?
18:10Karen said he's come alive
18:11since the last early.
18:13I'm very happy.
18:14Good.
18:14He's a different animal
18:15than two weeks ago.
18:16Yeah, he is.
18:17He's really come on, isn't he?
18:19Hi, Jim.
18:20He's flew over the fence there.
18:22Listen, whether it's enough
18:23to win a Grand National
18:24I don't know
18:25but we'll give it
18:26a bloody good go.
18:27Where are we going to go?
18:35Go out there
18:36and whatever big screen
18:37I can see it on
18:38I'm going to start
18:38and watch it there.
18:39Crazy atmosphere
18:40for that Grand National parade.
18:42You know, Paul Nicholls
18:43has stood on one side
18:44and Willie Mullins
18:45is across the way
18:46and just to be there
18:47is amazing.
18:48It was a privilege
18:49and just a fantastic day
18:50and we want more of it.
18:53Thanks.
18:57I'm competitive
18:57in the sense
18:58that I want to win
18:59but I'm not competitive
19:01in the sense
19:01that I want to beat
19:02a certain person.
19:04Hello, everyone.
19:05Very good.
19:05How are you?
19:06Very well indeed.
19:07I just like getting
19:08my horses to run well
19:09for their owners
19:10and seeing the joy
19:13they get out of it.
19:14There's plenty more
19:15to find, isn't there?
19:16Plenty more, yeah.
19:17I just want one like him,
19:18will I?
19:19Yeah.
19:20There's an element
19:21of mystery about it
19:22when you buy
19:23a young horse.
19:24What might it be?
19:25What could it win?
19:27And it's just something
19:29that I developed
19:30a passion for.
19:32I'd gone to the sales
19:34with my wife, Sadie,
19:36to look for a mare
19:37for Sadie
19:38and Sadie had got
19:40chatting to Willie.
19:42It transpired that
19:43we went to the same
19:44national school together,
19:45did our first communion
19:46together
19:47and we just started
19:48talking about old times.
19:50On the way home
19:51at night,
19:51she said,
19:52why don't we ask Willie
19:53if he'll train horse for us?
19:54I said,
19:54well, ring him up.
19:55All for the want
19:57of just going
19:58and having a cup of tea
19:59and a chat.
20:00We end up with
20:00a fantastic horse.
20:02Got it, well done.
20:04Nick Brockett,
20:05so laid back,
20:06you'd think you were
20:07asleep all the time.
20:08He's very light-framed,
20:10but tough as old boots.
20:11First time he ran for us
20:14was sadly five days
20:16before Sadie passed away
20:17with terminal cancer.
20:21Willie hadn't actually
20:22got the horse fit to run,
20:23but he ran him
20:24so that Sadie could see him run.
20:27We knew she didn't have
20:28a lot of time left, really.
20:30He finished fourth,
20:36then Willie had a chat
20:36with Sadie after the race
20:38and said,
20:38don't worry,
20:39he will win next time he runs.
20:41And he did.
20:42Nick Brockett
20:43on the stand side
20:44for Willie Mullins!
20:46Someone who'd been
20:47so full of life
20:48the last time I met her
20:49to get ill
20:50and pass away so quickly,
20:52it's just,
20:53life isn't fair.
20:54Every time Nick Brockett runs,
20:58Sadie is right there
20:59in the middle of it.
21:02Her name's still on the car
21:03with the horse
21:04as the owner.
21:06I mean,
21:06that's just magic.
21:07And to be riding
21:09Nick Brockett
21:09is an honour, yeah.
21:12Sadie loved Nick Brockett.
21:15I know ultimately
21:16I should have absolutely
21:17revelled in the occasion.
21:19I'm going and getting
21:20a new outfit
21:20and talking to all
21:22the friends
21:23and I should have
21:24loved it.
21:33A little over
21:34a hundred minutes
21:35and counting
21:35to the Randox
21:36Grand National.
21:37Can you kid?
21:3822 to 1.
21:39I take that price
21:40that'll be shorter.
21:41Nick Brockett
21:41winning by the only
21:42amateur of the race.
21:4325 to 1.
21:44I am Maximus.
21:45His favourite
21:46to win the race
21:47for the second consecutive
21:48year, 7 to 1.
21:49Point on end
21:50we'll ride him again.
21:51Paul has been
21:53with fantastic
21:54all season
21:55riding out of his skin.
21:57You were caught
21:58as long as I'm
21:58a loser.
22:00I have the privilege
22:01of picking
22:01between the majority
22:03of Willie's horses.
22:05Nick Brockett
22:06has won all
22:07the big trials
22:07for the race.
22:08Big, big ride
22:09but can I ride him
22:11out with the chance
22:12I am Maximus
22:12as of winning?
22:13No.
22:14Definitely not.
22:16Here's the reigning champ.
22:17It's I am Maximus.
22:19Can he do it?
22:21Who knows?
22:23I am Maximus
22:24has won the Irish
22:25Grand National.
22:26He's won the Grand
22:27National last year.
22:29He's gone there
22:29in good form.
22:32He's a big,
22:33big chance again.
22:35Paul Townend
22:35has had some
22:36incredible successes
22:36with Willie Mullins.
22:38He's Willie Mullins'
22:39number one
22:40stable jockey.
22:41Defeat is not
22:42in his vocabulary.
22:44When you're growing up
22:44the big green fences,
22:46Aintree,
22:47it's where you want
22:48to win
22:48and it does
22:50have that feeling
22:50that it's special.
22:52A million pound question.
22:53Can you win a second one?
22:55We'll give it a rattle.
22:58Success keeps
22:59me motivated
23:00because you've
23:01experienced it.
23:02You know how
23:03high the highs are.
23:05Paul is hugely competitive.
23:06We're very close.
23:07We're good friends
23:08but he's still a rival
23:09to me
23:10once we're on the track
23:11anyway.
23:13You sit alongside
23:13the person
23:14you're trying to beat
23:15and between
23:17the Mullins team
23:18it's everyone
23:19for themselves.
23:27Some stage.
23:29All are looking
23:30to win
23:31the people's race.
23:38Oh Willie
23:39come on again.
23:40You've been tansy.
23:40You've been tansy.
23:41You've been tansy.
23:42You've been tansy.
23:42You've been tansy.
23:43The Grand National
23:44is the race that
23:45everyone in the sport
23:46wants to win
23:47plus the fact
23:48it can have a huge
23:49impact on the
23:50trainer's title.
23:51To be champion trainer
23:52it's not about the
23:53number of wins you have
23:53it's about the amount
23:54of prize money
23:55you can accumulate
23:57over the season.
23:58With the Grand National
23:59worth nearly a million
24:00pounds
24:00and half a million
24:02pounds to the winner
24:02it's always going to be
24:04pivotal.
24:04All season pretty much
24:09we thought Dan's got
24:10this.
24:11Going into the Grand
24:12National Willie
24:12Mullins is over a
24:13million pounds behind
24:14Dan Skelton in the
24:15race to be champion
24:16trainer.
24:19But Dan Skelton
24:19hasn't got a runner
24:20in the race.
24:22We just don't have a
24:23horse for the Grand
24:23National this year.
24:25I could run four.
24:26I could run five.
24:27But they're just not
24:28suitable horses for
24:29this race.
24:31I am worried that my
24:32two biggest rivals in
24:34the trainers championship
24:35have got a third of
24:36the runners here
24:36between them.
24:37There's a good chunk
24:37of prize money
24:38available.
24:39I think going into
24:40the National we're
24:41probably about a
24:42million behind Dan.
24:43I think we really
24:44need a miracle to
24:45happen.
24:46We just need
24:46everything to go
24:47right and that
24:48doesn't happen in
24:48the National.
24:50I thought Maximus
24:51should just win it
24:51again but...
24:52Well we all thought
24:53that when he crossed
24:53the line last year
24:54but he's got to
24:55carry Salve Stone
24:56he's got to do it
24:57again and on
24:5850 rounds.
24:59Let's face it
24:59you're going to find
25:00any negative
25:00with Mullins.
25:01Yeah ask me another
25:02one I'll tell you
25:02why that can't win.
25:04I'm not saying I
25:06am in numbers
25:07man but he could
25:07be looking at it.
25:08Dan's about £850,000
25:10in front of us so
25:11you know I need to
25:12win the National
25:13have a good entry
25:14meeting to close
25:14again.
25:15Ruby keeps in
25:16while you haven't
25:17run him enough
25:17he won't be fit
25:18enough.
25:18I think he'll
25:21handle the ground
25:22and Willy's got
25:23six and Paul's
25:25got five.
25:27They are
25:28definitely going to
25:28take something
25:30out of this race
25:30it's just a question
25:31of how much.
25:39Right the owner
25:40is a can-do kid
25:41on here
25:41he's in Barbados
25:42watching this.
25:43So Paul Nichols
25:44has had a very
25:45uncharacteristic
25:46tricky time with
25:47jockeys in the
25:48build up to the
25:49race.
25:49Johnny Burke
25:49says yeah
25:50love to ride
25:51your horse
25:52sir but within
25:5224 hours he
25:54thinks he gets
25:54a better offer
25:55from Willy
25:55Mullins and he
25:56jumps ship.
25:57Get a good start
25:58and then see
25:59what's happening.
25:59Yeah I reckon
26:00when I talk
26:01in the other
26:01morning I felt
26:02like I was
26:02going to give
26:03him a good
26:04gun up.
26:04It's been
26:05interesting
26:05who was going
26:07to ride a
26:07stairway fair
26:08but we went
26:08for Paul O'Brien
26:09I've got lots
26:10of confidence in
26:11him the owners
26:11have he knows
26:12the horse.
26:13I've got a
26:14fantastic team
26:14can-do kid who
26:16I said is our
26:16best chances
26:17obviously written
26:17by Harry
26:18Covden.
26:19It's all about
26:20mindset you have
26:21to be incredibly
26:22selfish just do
26:23what's right for
26:23yourself and be
26:25pretty ruthless
26:26about how you
26:26go about it
26:27because it
26:27doesn't get
26:28any better
26:28than the
26:28Grand National.
26:3429 here
26:35this is
26:36Horzantu
26:37Dori
26:38his trainer
26:39Michael Keady
26:40has never
26:40trained a
26:41winner over
26:42fences.
26:42Imagine if
26:43he does it
26:43here.
26:45I think there
26:46is an element
26:46of me being
26:47the new kid
26:48on the block
26:48and it turns
26:48up in the
26:49Grand National
26:49and a few
26:50eyebrows raised
26:51but really
26:52I'm relying on
26:53my experience
26:54to prove them
26:54wrong.
26:56I've never
26:59ridden a
26:59race and
27:00Dori in a
27:00race before
27:01so I've
27:01got a few
27:01butterflies.
27:04The atmosphere
27:05in the
27:05way room is
27:06definitely on
27:07edge.
27:07A few people
27:08quieter than
27:08normal.
27:09There's a lot
27:10stake for a lot
27:10of the jockeys
27:11I'm so hot.
27:15James can you
27:15mop my brow?
27:17Charles
27:17I've heard him.
27:19There's a time
27:19and a place for
27:20mucking about and
27:21having a laugh
27:22but once you're
27:23out there you're
27:23being paid to
27:24do a job.
27:25I'd love to win
27:25the Grand
27:26National not
27:26just for myself
27:27but for the
27:29Governor.
27:30Gary yes and
27:31of course
27:31Bob.
27:32Bob.
27:33Yeah.
27:33I never believed
27:35in destiny but I
27:37met Willie
27:37Thrusader and
27:39obviously Nick
27:40Rocket that's
27:41what she left
27:41me with for
27:42me to carry
27:43on and have
27:44a life after
27:44Sadie had
27:45passed away
27:45just before the
27:47race.
27:48I'm kind of
27:48thinking is this
27:49happening?
27:51Are we here?
28:06Now comes the
28:07moment as the
28:09jockeys make
28:09their way out.
28:10Patrick Mullins
28:11running for his
28:11dad on Nick
28:12Rocket.
28:13You're trying to
28:13stay calm but at
28:14the same time
28:15you're rearing to
28:16go.
28:17Oh this is
28:18hold on to
28:18your hot weather.
28:19So six horses
28:21for Willie
28:21Mullins going for
28:22back to back
28:23Grand Nationals.
28:24Paul Townend
28:25will come out
28:26with the trophy.
28:28Big atmosphere
28:28over there.
28:29Feel all that
28:30anticipation.
28:31As a defending
28:32champion I'm
28:33feeling the
28:33pressure so it's
28:35going to be
28:35tough.
28:35He's on my
28:39attention and
28:40that's me.
28:41I don't know
28:41what it is.
28:42I can't
28:42tell you.
28:44Give me two.
28:47Now plan A.
28:48A nice start.
28:49That's it.
28:50Get away and
28:51hopefully no
28:51fall.
28:52Okay let's get
28:53on board.
28:54We've got to get
28:55our tactics right.
28:56Tactics that
28:57complement one
28:58another rather
28:59than compete.
29:01What's the point
29:02in two horses
29:02going out doing
29:03the same thing
29:04and ruining each
29:05other's chances?
29:07That's a look.
29:09Freddie one thing
29:10just enjoy yourself
29:11and then ride it
29:11to run well
29:12alright?
29:12Exactly.
29:12Perfect.
29:13Get in a rhythm
29:13and start passing
29:14horses.
29:15I've tried to give
29:16my lads advice
29:17as to what I think
29:18that each horse
29:19is different so you
29:19ride your own horse
29:20accordingly.
29:21No point saying
29:21follow this or
29:22follow that
29:22because you do
29:23the good end
29:24up upside down.
29:25You do what you
29:25think alright?
29:27Alright.
29:28And he's kicking
29:33out Brave Man's
29:34game.
29:34Walking out
29:35Brave Man's
29:35game in front
29:36of us got a
29:37little claustrophobic
29:37so there's a bit
29:39of a bottleneck
29:39and Nick Rocket
29:40starts to get a
29:41little bit anxious.
29:42You don't want
29:43to get caught up
29:43there and get
29:43the horse getting
29:44too nervous.
29:46It just shows you
29:46that it's even
29:47before the race
29:48you can start
29:48running into trouble
29:49when it comes to
29:50Aintry.
29:50Yeah welcome
29:51to Aintry which
29:53is in a fever
29:54pitch of excitement
29:55as the 30 foot
29:56runners are
29:56assembling down
29:57at the start.
29:58Ready to rush
29:59and roll.
30:00That is organised
30:01chaos.
30:01Steady on lads
30:02push over.
30:04Horses everywhere
30:05trying to form a
30:06line.
30:07Everyone's on edge.
30:08The noise is
30:09incredible.
30:10We canter down to
30:14the first jump
30:14show it to him
30:15so he realised
30:16what was coming.
30:17Ah Varun's
30:18daring.
30:18That's that
30:18Varun's daring.
30:20I see a little
30:20slot beside Harry
30:21Cobden.
30:22I slot in beside
30:23him.
30:24Everyone is fired up
30:25because they know
30:26what they've got
30:26ahead of them.
30:28The intensity of it.
30:29Yeah it's not for
30:30the faint hearted.
30:31Push over lad
30:32keep going over.
30:33I want to be in the
30:34middle.
30:35The line turns
30:36I kind of needle
30:36him.
30:37That's great.
30:37I'm right where I
30:38want to be now.
30:47We're going to have
30:47to go and watch
30:48somebody else win it.
30:49I'll be cheering on
30:50quite a few of the
30:51other trainers.
30:51Not all of them.
30:54Keep me taking.
30:55One second.
30:58Go on.
31:01They're away
31:02for the first time.
31:04As it raced towards
31:04the first Iron Maximus
31:06is one of those
31:06towards the inside.
31:08Iron Maximus
31:09gets a brilliant start.
31:10He remembers where
31:11he is.
31:11He thinks right
31:12this is good.
31:16Get down to the
31:16first and I can feel
31:17Arrest and Laurie
31:18noticing this is
31:19different today.
31:21He has a good look
31:22at the first and he's
31:23over the first.
31:25That's a big sigh of
31:26relief.
31:31You're thinking
31:32about nothing else
31:33bar what's it for you.
31:36You're going into the
31:36unknown you know.
31:40My mindset in a race
31:41like this is fence by
31:42fence save energy.
31:44Rhythm.
31:45Can't do kid right up
31:46there.
31:47Your mind is on all
31:48the surroundings.
31:49The horses and we're
31:50following the right one.
31:51Does that one jump
31:52right in front of you
31:53and get the old
31:55faller next to you.
31:57Brush flying everywhere.
31:59A lot of things can go
32:00roll.
32:03So on towards the fence
32:04before beaches.
32:05The most important
32:06horse I'm watching is
32:07Nick Rocket.
32:08My son is riding him.
32:10Any father, any mother
32:11would be looking at
32:12their son to make sure
32:13nothing goes wrong in
32:14the race.
32:16They've got a sensible
32:17pace.
32:18Nick Rocket travelling
32:19nicely.
32:21Jumping at speed when
32:23you do it right.
32:24That is the biggest
32:25buzz.
32:25I can tell Nick
32:27Rocket has realised
32:28that the fences are
32:29different but that
32:30they're soft.
32:31That he can jump
32:32through the top of
32:32them.
32:34This is a big field.
32:35Everyone is quite
32:36hyped but we've got a
32:37good start.
32:37We've got a good
32:38position.
32:39Anything can happen.
32:42And Highland gets
32:43them closer too.
32:43Yeah, Nicky Henderson
32:44hasn't won this race
32:45but he's got a chance
32:46with Highland.
32:48The union between
32:49jockey and horse is
32:50incredibly important.
32:52I believe it is an
32:53art form.
32:55It's about conserving
32:57energy.
32:58It's trying to be
32:58efficient at your
32:59obstacles.
33:00It's trying to save
33:01your run for the
33:02right time.
33:05I think we may have
33:06as many as 32 still
33:07standing at this
33:07stage.
33:08I was hoping Paul
33:09would be going a bit
33:11better.
33:11I am actually.
33:12I've just been kept
33:13back at the moment.
33:14I'm slipping back
33:15through the field a
33:16little bit.
33:16He's not carrying me
33:17as well as he did
33:18last year.
33:19Everything will never
33:20go perfect in a race.
33:23The worst thing you
33:23can do is panic.
33:24They make their way
33:25up towards the
33:26chairs.
33:26Probably further
33:27back than I'd like
33:28to live, eh?
33:29Coming down to the
33:30chair, the big fence
33:31was very difficult.
33:32The crowd roaring,
33:34but you literally
33:35cannot hear anything.
33:37You're just thinking
33:38about your horse and
33:40the obstacle in front
33:40of you and getting
33:41over it.
33:43Are you all
33:44stepped foot over it?
33:45going down there?
33:46Come on!
33:47You can hear the crowd
33:48roaring them on their
33:49way as they come to
33:50the water.
33:51And still, so many in
33:53the race.
33:56Towards the outside is
33:57Toronso Derry.
33:59We're in about six or
34:00seven.
34:01He's going beautifully.
34:02He's gone further into
34:03the race than I thought
34:04he was going to.
34:05And he looks to be
34:05absolutely loving it.
34:08Come on!
34:09He's just gone halfway,
34:10absolutely cruising.
34:12Down there, come on!
34:13I cannot believe how
34:14well he's going.
34:16He's bang up with the
34:16leaders, not running
34:18like a hundred to one
34:19shot.
34:19Definitely feeling like
34:20we're outrunning the
34:21rods at this stage.
34:23Here he is, absolutely
34:24tanking up the front,
34:25just starting to let
34:25myself dream a little
34:26bit here.
34:27Iron Maximus is going
34:28the shortest way round.
34:30My eye keeps being
34:31drawn back to Paul.
34:32You can see him just
34:33waiting and waiting to
34:34make that decisive move.
34:37As we head out in the
34:37second circuit, I'm
34:39hoping Maya Maximus
34:40is going to come alive.
34:41I can't afford for
34:42anything to go wrong.
34:50As they continue on
34:51their way, there are
34:52plenty in going very
34:53well at the moment.
34:56Going into the second
34:57circuit, all six of
34:58Willie Mullins' horses
34:59are still in contention,
35:00as are the five, though,
35:01for Paul Nichols.
35:03Can-do-Kid is starting
35:04to creep into it.
35:05My record in the Grand
35:10National is pretty
35:11terrible.
35:12I've only completed
35:13twice.
35:15But this year,
35:16Can-do-Kid, you know,
35:16I generally think he's
35:17got a good chance.
35:20Ruling race over a
35:22marathon distance takes
35:23a lot of grit and guts
35:24to win.
35:26I'm travelling nicely.
35:27I'm following Ion Max,
35:29who is obviously the
35:29favourite.
35:30and Can-do-Kid is half
35:32taking his eye off the
35:33fence.
35:38Landed steep, but we
35:40were going down.
35:41Can-do-Kid is a
35:42faller.
35:43My race was over.
35:45Momentum takes over,
35:46I saw two just
35:47gravity, unfortunately.
35:48The race is over in the
35:50blink of an eye.
35:51Gutted.
35:53I'm sad because he was
35:54travelling ever so well.
35:56He's fine.
35:57Paul Nichols has
35:58taken a big hit at
35:59fence 21.
36:00We're only going
36:01backwards, weren't we?
36:02Harry Cobden out,
36:03but now two of his
36:04other runners have
36:05pulled up.
36:06But I say, the signs
36:08are ominous that it's
36:09not going to be our
36:10day.
36:17Coming to the canal
36:18turn.
36:19The canal turn, and
36:20because you're taking
36:20that fence at an angle,
36:21anything can happen,
36:22horses on your
36:22inside, outside, but
36:23Nick Rocket just
36:24launches at us.
36:27It was the biggest
36:28job we put in the
36:28whole race.
36:30And I thought to
36:30myself, we've got
36:31plenty under the
36:32bonnet here.
36:34Maximus has got
36:35quite a lot of work
36:36to do from where he
36:37is, and Nick Rocket's
36:38also got to pick up
36:39quite a lot of
36:40ground.
36:40You can hear the
36:41horse breeding,
36:41you're listening to
36:42him, making sure he's
36:43breeding right, while
36:44watching ten different
36:47things happening in
36:47front of you.
36:48It's amazing, and it
36:50is addictive.
36:51This is the third
36:52from home.
36:52Home port not very
36:53low.
36:54The leaders have just
36:57gone a little bit
36:57away from us, but
36:58anything can happen
36:59here.
37:00It's the Grand
37:01National at the end
37:01of the day.
37:02As I jumped the
37:10canal turn for the
37:10second time, I can
37:12feel Highland beginning
37:13to tire, and once I
37:14get up to the
37:15Melling Road, I knew it
37:16was time to pull up.
37:17Highland doesn't seem
37:18to be enjoying himself
37:19and he's out of the
37:19race.
37:20You're pulling up so
37:21that he can go and
37:22race another day.
37:24I was a bit gutted that
37:25it was all over, but I
37:26was incredibly proud of
37:27my horse.
37:28As always, if you
37:29don't win, it's
37:31disappointing, but
37:32you've got to keep
37:33trying.
37:36Iron Maximus is
37:37actually just getting
37:38a little bit closer
37:39now, starting to get
37:40serious.
37:41I noticed Paul coming
37:43towards the outside, and
37:45once he gets clear air
37:46in front of me, he
37:48starts to pick up and
37:49go well.
37:50I can see Nick
37:51Rock in front of me.
37:52If I can get onto his
37:53tail, he might bring me
37:54into the race.
37:55Iron Maximus is
37:56hanging in there, and
37:57once we're hanging in
37:58there, we have a
37:58chance.
37:59On your inner side!
38:02You're looking, trying
38:03to see who else might
38:04win.
38:04Some people play it
38:05like chess.
38:06You might move here
38:06to get someone to move
38:07there.
38:08Sometimes it's poker.
38:09You might be bluffing
38:10someone.
38:10You can try to get
38:10someone to go earlier
38:11or wait longer than
38:12they want.
38:13Now we're at 6.07.
38:148, 9, 10 in with
38:15chances here.
38:16Iron Maximus getting
38:17close to Nick
38:18Rock at 2.
38:20We spread out down to
38:21the second last.
38:22I get a bit of
38:23daylight, and I can see
38:24now I'm only two
38:24lengths off the
38:25years.
38:25I'm thinking,
38:25perfect.
38:27A lot of the hearts
38:27are crying off now, and
38:29I know Max can stay, so it's
38:30all about keeping the
38:31tempo stronger, keeping
38:33breathing, keeping
38:33jumping.
38:34I am Maximus down the
38:36outside, Nick Rocket
38:37travelling well, then
38:38Tuick in behind the
38:39Iroko, two out of the
38:40national.
38:41I am Maximus coming
38:42there with Nick Rocket,
38:44Manela Kakuna, Grange
38:45Clare West, meeting of
38:46the waters, and down
38:47towards the last.
38:48From the second last
38:49home, it looked like it's
38:50between three or four of
38:51our horses.
38:59Does history beckon?
39:00Paul Townend looks over
39:01to his left.
39:02He's got a huge chance
39:03here.
39:04I am Maximus comes
39:04off my outside.
39:06I know it's Paul now
39:06because I can see the
39:07white hat, and the
39:08minute he does that, my
39:09horse picks up with
39:10him.
39:10Down towards the last.
39:11I am Maximus on the
39:12outside of Nick Rocket.
39:14They head towards the
39:15elbow.
39:16Nick Rocket, I am
39:17Maximus.
39:19That's not finished
39:20yet.
39:21I am Maximus,
39:23bidding to retain his
39:24crown.
39:25I'm thinking, hoping,
39:27praying, that when we
39:28swing off the elbow like
39:29last year, I'll take
39:31off.
39:31A sniff and tongue
39:32between these two.
39:34You've just got to put
39:34yourself in the right
39:35position and hope that
39:37you get the bounce at
39:38the ball.
39:38Nick Rocket, launching,
39:40dreamy, holding
39:40another.
39:41Just as they round the
39:42elbow, I am Maximus,
39:43edges ahead.
39:47Then I think the dream
39:48is my son winning the
39:50national.
39:50He was over.
39:52But I was thinking of
39:53my son.
39:54I wasn't thinking of
39:55winning the national.
39:57Patrick Mullins,
39:58to the seal by I am
39:59Maximus.
40:00This is a kick into
40:01top gear.
40:05He's starting to put
40:06away gear.
40:08I'm looking for a
40:09finish line, but it's
40:10so far away.
40:11I am Maximus trying,
40:13training.
40:14To get upsides, I am
40:16Maximus has given me
40:17absolutely everything.
40:20Up towards the final,
40:21150 yards.
40:23I'm looking for a shadow.
40:24I'm looking for something
40:25coming on my outside.
40:26I'm thinking, please don't
40:27get beat now when we're
40:28this close.
40:29Nick Rocket, hanging
40:31top.
40:31I am Maximus.
40:32I'm waiting for someone to
40:33come in to shatter the
40:34dream.
40:35And up towards the line,
40:36it's Nick Rocket's grand
40:38national for amateur
40:39Sir Patrick Mullins.
40:44I can't believe it, you
40:45know, when he passes the
40:46winning post, I'm trying
40:47to breathe.
40:48And all these other
40:48thoughts flooding my mind.
40:51Wish my mother was here.
40:53Wish my father was here.
40:55Sharing in the joy of it
40:56all.
40:58It's just the ultimate.
41:00I stood up and smiled.
41:02A smile of just pure
41:03happiness, yeah.
41:05I mean, just extraordinary.
41:07A father and son
41:08combination to win the
41:09grand national is
41:10something else.
41:12Congratulated them.
41:14And yeah, you're just
41:15envious of that feeling
41:16because you've been there
41:17before.
41:18It is a team.
41:21But you want to be the
41:22one holding the trophy.
41:28Doron Su-Derry finishing
41:29in 13th.
41:30But that in itself is a
41:32great achievement.
41:34We were dreaming.
41:35Unfortunately, the distance
41:36was just a little bit too
41:37far for him.
41:38but genuinely never felt so
41:39proud for a horse in my
41:41life.
41:42This is extraordinary.
41:45We've got the winning
41:46owner here.
41:47So emotional.
41:49Well done.
41:49Well done.
41:50I had a feeling that he'd
41:52win.
41:52I don't know why.
41:53I was just so confident.
41:57My late wife, Sadie.
41:59Oh, she was there, yeah.
42:00She'd have been laughing and
42:02crying and jumping up and
42:04down.
42:04But she'd have been ecstatic
42:06over it.
42:08Stuart held it to get her
42:10admirably well.
42:11He would just see the pure
42:12enjoyment about it.
42:18Willie, that was some
42:19result.
42:20Some result, yeah.
42:21You can see the last
42:22horsey started to come back
42:23and down to the right.
42:24Mads are asking me all these
42:26questions.
42:26I just can't answer.
42:27I can't open my mouth.
42:28I'm just too emotionally gone
42:30at this stage.
42:31Yeah, I will.
42:33Be up to the leg or something.
42:36Willie, take a moment.
42:38It's the first time ever that
42:40I'm stuck for words.
42:42I should be up to the
42:43one, isn't it?
42:44Just one minute.
42:45We'll come back in a minute,
42:46Willie.
42:46Yeah.
42:47Yeah.
42:47I've just become very emotional,
42:50I suppose, is the word.
42:52I meet with my father and I was
42:54as amazed as anyone at the
42:55reaction.
42:56He doesn't really get like
42:58that.
42:58It really added to the
42:59occasion for me and obviously
43:00made me a bit emotional.
43:02Yeah.
43:02I mean, look, every son wants
43:03to make their father proud,
43:04so it was just very special,
43:05I think.
43:07The winning jockey is Patrick
43:09O'Reilly.
43:12I can't see myself topping that
43:15achievement, especially for
43:16Patrick.
43:17And I felt like I felt like any
43:19dad or parent did on the day
43:21that your kid has just won.
43:24All that pride came out,
43:27just burst out.
43:31I didn't realise how well the
43:33race had gone until we got
43:34back into the weight room.
43:35Someone said, we were first,
43:37second, third, fifth and
43:39seventh.
43:42Then we were trying to add up
43:44how much money that was going
43:45to be for the training
43:45championship.
43:47The drinks are on penny!
43:48For Willie Mullins to
43:50accumulate over £860,000 in
43:54one jumps race, I don't think
43:56it'll ever be matched.
43:58Willie Mullins, Leapfrogs,
43:59Paul Nicholls and Nicky
44:00Henderson is now second in the
44:02trainers championship.
44:03He was over a million pounds
44:05behind Dan Skelton at the start
44:06of the day, but now he's closed
44:08the gap to less than £140,000.
44:10Do you know what you have
44:11behind him?
44:11What?
44:12£140,000, £140,000 behind him.
44:14Is it all?
44:14Our horses have to keep going
44:16without a replay from Dan.
44:17Now we're in with a shot.
44:19Very well, Dan.
44:20Thank you very much.
44:21What a day, eh?
44:22For him to just go and take
44:24out that much prize money in
44:25one race is deflating when
44:27you think you've worked hard
44:29all season to build up a
44:30lead that you hopefully can
44:32protect.
44:33You start thinking, how did
44:34we ever get to this position?
44:36But you ain't won it until
44:38you won it.
44:38And we ain't won it, yeah.
44:41It's all to play for.
44:42And what a season finale it's
44:44going to be.
44:45This is it.
44:47Who will win the
44:47trainers' championship?
44:49We're still in with a chance.
44:50We fight to the very end.
44:51We've got this far.
44:52We've got to keep focused.
44:55Who knows?
44:55Maybe it comes down to the
44:56last race.
44:57The script is not written yet.
