00:35air is really special for a number of reasons

00:53the scottish grand nationals one of the most historic and famous races of the year

00:59and this year again it's the battleground of the race to be champion trainer

01:04dan skeleton alongside me this race could define the trainers championship

01:08yeah it could there's a lot on offer we could do with we could do the nice slice of this

01:13good luck here all right cheers the trainers championship is totally based around prize

01:19money every race that you win the prize money goes to your total not you again

01:25you've got two weeks to go and the coral scottish grand national is one of the last big prize

01:31plots of the season 200 000 it's huge

01:34so there are two men left standing in the race to be champion trainer britain's dan skeleton

01:42against arlen's willie mullins in a head-to-head and it's quite clearly going down to the wire

01:46competition's going to be fierce and all we want to do is win

01:51it's a shootout isn't it you have to make them count

01:57willie is trying to make history back-to-back wins he is hungry

02:07it's one of those rare things in sport that very few people ever achieve it sets you apart from

02:16your peers it's a lifetime opportunity

02:21dan skeleton is vying to win his first british trainers title

02:28i don't know what i'd feel if i won the trainers championship but yeah i'd love to know what it

02:35feels like and i'll explain very very happily for you what it felt like but it's got to happen

02:41willie mullins congratulations sir this title race has been going to the wire the last two seasons

02:52you know i got beat in the championship on the last day

02:57that pain of failure lasts so much longer than the joy of victory

03:05willie actually said afterwards you gotta lose one

03:29dan's progress over the last decade has been incredible to watch

03:35he's still young in terms of being a trainer

03:40but he's absolutely in the top tier of britain's top trainers

04:13we enjoy the sport we're in and we want to be successful in it we want to lift trophies

04:22we want to get to the top

04:23my relationship with harry is probably unlike anybody else's in racing because we're brothers

04:31harry rides more or less exclusively for me

04:34his success is directly linked to mine which is how we want it

04:39we've been around horse for a life and it's all we know

04:45families are funny things and the skeleton family is an extraordinary one

04:56they are a formidable team

05:00i think of the two things we're trying to do this year

05:03jockey cup and the trainers championship

05:06if everything went to plan it would be a once-in-a-lifetime achievement and it will be enough

05:11going into the grand national meeting at entry dan's had his best ever season

05:19he's amassed over three million pounds so far and he's about 860 grand ahead of his closest rival

05:28and that's left harry skelton heading up the david power jockey's cup

05:44it's a brand new initiative and it's run for six months throughout all the jumps races on itv where

05:53jockeys have been able to accumulate points

05:55and so i'm delighted to welcome on the stage harry skelton

05:59to win the first david power jockey's cup it's a great honor

06:05harry skelton takes over the winning prize of 500 000

06:10i don't know what harry would do with the money

06:16i mean i could give a bit to his brother that'd be a nice thing to do wouldn't it

06:22i'm gonna blow the lot to be honest

06:24now i'm not joking let's remind ourselves that some of the high profile wins harry has secured

06:31this season this time harry skelton has not blinked cheeky enough here fortune

06:39amer gets revenge throughout the season it's harry's jockey cup total racked up

06:43but loader sue driven clear is going to complete doubles for harry and dan skelton

06:48so too the dan's champions championship prize pot

06:51will win the bet fair heavy of the end obviously steve will chase loader soon

06:55probably had more runners than we've ever had more prize money than we've ever had

06:58and we've got a good jump on the others

07:00the new line harry skelton is getting up the new line has won the turners

07:06the skeletons have been in really good form all season

07:09he's flying along at the moment i think it'd be very hard to beat this year

07:13the double is seriously real it's on

07:16when in the jockey cup won't sort of mean harry rests on his laurels he is relentless

07:23we're in a great position to be vying for a trainer championship that's the one we're missing

07:29of a gunner for the double

07:41but a few hours after the presentation the most lucrative jump race of the season is on

07:47and dan is in the stands without a runner

07:51and now the conclusion of the grand national

07:53five of willie's horses are in a line

08:14for willie mullins to accumulate over 860 000 pounds in one jumps race i don't think it'll ever be matched

08:33we've got three weeks left of the season it's going to be an absolutely incredible finale

08:39dan skeleton must feel that willie's just driven a bulldozer to the house that he's been building all

08:46it's going to be a lot tougher than people think but you know dan is not laying down and taking this

10:11is a bit of a joker card anyway so it's not like it has to happen but it'd be great for it to happen

10:46i love spanish harlem yeah i was hoping the ground would be a bit drier but can't have everything right

10:51the best outcome is us being first and second the worst outcome is willie filling the first six which

10:56after last week in the grand national you know it isn't impossible for for him so we'll just see how

11:02we get on i'm happy with my horses hopefully they can just proud six horses for willie mullins he's

11:08got a seriously strong hand he's going all out to win it again blue brazil either one or two

11:52huge ambition i have as well and and people when you get get to that end of any sport you like to

12:00win you like to give it your best shot for willie and the whole family whole yard to win the uk trainers

12:09championship again would be unbelievable that's going into the history books to win it again it just would

12:16show that maybe it wasn't a fluke the first time whoo don't want to lose this good team of horses

12:26now going to air so um we'll keep our fingers crossed keep our fingers yeah the thing that makes the

12:32conclusion to the trainers championship so fascinating is willie's desire to hold on to the trophy it's a

12:38nice cookie jar for the year isn't it he wants to basically keep the trophy not just for the sweets

12:43but just because that's been his ambition we'll have to see how the gods line up we thought we

12:50were lucky last year so maybe we'll be lucky again this year fingers crossed you know this is unique

12:58the opportunity is there and if the ball bounces right it could happen again just came on we're coming

13:05after that so much will be decided at 3 35 in the coral scottish national

13:21first scottish national or the english national scottish mate i won it twice have you ever won it

13:25i just need you but it's got a chance that would last year make that last year

13:34as they run to the second last mcdermott and danny mullins last year winning on mcdermott

13:40gave me an unbelievable buzz as they head down towards the last in the scottish national

13:44it is mcdermott who's moved through the lead for willie mullins

13:48and when it was all in the balance at the last jump danny just rolled the dice and went all in

14:00coming up towards the line mcdermott and sorry first in a photo that is so so close is this

14:07the photo that decides the trainer's championship first number 11 mcdermott

14:13riding that winner for willie when he really needed it that was something extra special

14:21can i get a very quick i want to see my men when danny won the four finish last year it was huge

14:27that's one photograph i'll be taking home i think that secured the championship for him it was the

14:33tightest of finishes preventing dan from securing his first ever championship

14:38next comes the big one though scotland's most famous race

14:47will lightning strike twice sail away sail away you won here before very good do it again

14:57yeah our chances in the scottish national sail away harry's riding him harry my brother

15:02that day you went over three miles you got an extra mile today and i think given your age you're

15:09ready for it don't let anyone tell you you're not whether he can see out the longer distance we'll

15:17see if we could pick up some valuable prize money i think we'd be happy but willie will also be there

15:23with his team as well we've got two runners in the race we also run snipe snipe's ridden by one of our

15:31younger jockeys harry atkins he ran all right last time as well that could help right young harry

15:38good it's your moment to shine all right to have a ride on a horse with a good chance in the race

15:45it's unbelievable it's a big race everyone's watching you're going to get there get there late

15:50yeah okay you know what you're doing yeah i look young i'm only 20 but i've been riding in races since

15:55i was 16 and to add the scottish national to my cv would be unbelievable just second line and then

16:02find yourself a bit of space you know what you're doing all right dan and harry you can see how much

16:07it means to them you just want to do the best and get the prize money as much as you can

16:13where are you going to line up just second road down the middle somewhere

16:26willie has got a lot of runners and he's got a lot of good horses with a lot of good chances

16:30but you've just got to try and get them all beaten you are the man that potentially holds the aces in

16:36this race is alongside me willie bunnings uh you have six in it you know we as you say we have six

16:41shots and they all have chances um let's go down can we just show this you've highlighted the the

16:46horses you've got and that's basically it throw as much at it as we can just could get very tight

16:52and i think every shilling is going to count willie can't miss from here home it's he's running out of

17:00time but there's big prize money there best of luck thanks fortunately i picked up an injury i'm going

17:07to miss air but i won't miss a second of it on the tv the fact that paul town and is out injured this is

17:13like a premier league manager losing his center forward it's like mo salah being out for liverpool

17:18it's a huge blow for willie so another one of the six for willie mullins here captain cody we don't

17:24often see harry cobden riding for willie in fact it's his second for the maestro replacing paul town

17:32and is a thankless task but willie looks outside the box and he goes for harry cobden england's

17:39champion jockey and there's no better substitute it's an honor to ride for willie mullins isn't it

17:45i'm more than happy to step up and give him a hand if i haven't got a runner in the race harry's

17:51free to ride whatever and you get offered the chance to ride one for willie mullins you can

17:54ride it i followed him in cheltenham just did you right yeah and i thought he over traveled for a

17:59little bit of the way yeah well if you if you're worried about that and just get him settle in

18:02somewhere yeah half run well and he might nick a lot if you can dan's probably won't talk to you for

18:09a while but anyway don't worry about that yeah thank you i met harry compton on traders i just i'd

18:15say to the whole room that we don't even need to think about this it's got to go

18:19danny all right have you your plan plan a yeah i'd imagine hand you away a bit of lice

18:24yeah i was worried well the ground had been too soft from were you willie mullins has got together

18:27a pretty ace team of jockeys we've got danny mullins who we know does particularly well for his uncle

18:33johnny burke who rode for him of course in the grand national and he's got his son patrick riding for

18:39him we're keeping him jumping isn't it ruby just says don't move don't move just let him do his job

18:44yeah that'll do me olympic man i think this is the pick of the mullins horses i've got patrick on

18:52board can he add a scottish national to that hugely emotional english grand national victory

18:58i desperately want to win i desperately want to beat him the only thing is he can swamp it we're gonna

19:08need everything to go away here on these big days i'm ready for it but i like to remain chilled

19:24i think harry skelton brings a bit more energy to the likes of these days pull it up pull it up pull it

19:30up pull it up there's an awful lot of money on offer here over 100k to the winner this is important

19:36this is a big one we're heading literally down the final stretch now in the trainers championship

19:43going into the scottish grand national there's around 170 000 between them this race matters

19:53we go and find a place to watch it we go up to ronnie's box these big meetings like air you're under

20:01pressure but with the trainers championship there is an extra pressure no the lift could take forever

20:08what are we doing the start for me in the scottish grand national is quite tense when willie's got that

20:14number of horses in the race if dan's going with two it's like going to war six against two now they

20:21move forward and hopefully we'll get away first time are we going this time we are yeah the big days are

20:27the ones that really matter it's hard to get a right in those races let alone win there's nothing

20:33like it steady steady steady

20:48the nerves are unreal because you think to yourself you know what happens if you win

20:53are we are we in here we are they must be off

21:03he's let them go for the scottish grand national of 2025

21:12you know it we are proper donald ducked four miles ahead of them they have 27 fences to jump

21:21we have six runners they're all horses i think are capable of winning prize money and it'd be

21:26brilliant if one of them could win there's a lot of pace on down to the first sailways one around

21:32the track before so all being well we've got a chance

22:05all right that's all over it got one more dart in there harry

22:09harry i can tell snake 50 of our chance of winning a scottish grand national is gone after one jump

22:14i saw harry scotton fall at first better him than me isn't it you know

22:27so a blow for dan skeleton harry's mount is out of the race but dan's still got one shot left

22:33and snipe's still in with a chance

22:36it's all going okay so far for snipe no real dramas from him so far

22:40he's got to have a chance hasn't he spanish harlem on the outside is in fifth followed by snipe

22:47we're jumping very well pay for a winner but you've got to keep your head straight and go

22:52another level head especially time where you need the prize money

22:57on now towards the second of the open ditches and down is snipe oh god snipe has come down he may

23:04well have brought down astings that didn't look very good that snipe gone out after his fall the

23:14horse snipe looks to be okay but jockey harry atkins appears to have been badly hurt i don't like this

23:22at all i'm really worried for harry and i i'm not sure this young harry's very good

23:34here at air in the scottish grand national dan skeleton's chances in this race are over we'll

23:44just go down there both jockeys have been unseated you almost know you're coming down

23:52hit the floor oh god a bit of a nasty bang to the head

24:10can't remember a lot but i was knocked out

24:15i had a few grazes

24:17my cheek was a bit swollen but i got up and walked off to the ambulance

24:24young harry was definitely concussed but luckily everything else was okay kind of does

24:31make your heart sink really because we've gone from having two chances to none

24:39and up now towards what will be the final fence in two more circuits time

24:43we've done out of the race olympic man has got the lead going very well and he's got into a good

24:49rhythm it's now all about how well willy's horses do so we've got six horses in the race which is a

24:57lot it obviously gives us a better chance we want to win and it is olympic man who leads the scottish

25:03national field i see patrick in front on olympic man so i'm worried as a father would patrick be able

25:09to stick on him then i'm trying to pick out my horse of the different colors hope they don't fall hope

25:14that they don't make a bad mistake and put them out of the race

25:18it's a ferocious pace but he's jumping very well you probably think that lightning can't strike twice

25:27but if you're not in you can't win so we'll roll the dice and you might get two sixes

25:34another one towards the rear and quite wide is captain cody i'm happy where i am it's all very

25:40well flying out in front and having your moment on the first lap and a half first lap and a half

25:45isn't important it's olympic man and patrick mullins who has the lead they've gone well through halfway

25:52the last half a mile is the most important in that race and that is when most of them are going

26:00backwards it's olympic man who took that fence with him he almost banked that made a bad mistake

26:11we're going out in the last lap and he just starts to lose his concentration he starts to get a little

26:15bit tired he makes a couple mistakes olympic man again made a bad mistake we lose momentum

26:22i'm thinking i'm beaten so they're going now for the last two fences in the back clark kent on the

26:32inside clark kent is with johnny burke jumping well galloping well things have run really well for me

26:43and i'm starting to think that this could be on captain cody in the orange getting closer as they go

26:49over the final fence taken in the bank street that leading group of eight are very tightly packed

26:57three more fences to take in the final half file of the 2025 coral scottish grand national and the

27:04field are led into the home straight by clark kent and jonathan burke i can feel the pack i can hear them

27:11but i'm still controlling the race at this point there's nothing going to flash by me

27:18i'm still too far from home to get excited

27:21harry gordon outside race on captain cody

27:26we turn into the straight i'm going better than everyone else

27:30captain cody smuggled into the race on the outside the only horse that's going remotely okay is the one

27:36one in front and i knew that i had him covered everywhere so it was just a matter of when i'm

27:41going to go they're racing now down towards the final fence of the coral scottish grand national

27:47captain cody on the outside for willie bullens and harry codden johnny's absolutely winged it in

27:54front of me he's landed out the back of the last three lengths in front of me but i know the whole way

27:59up the run and i'm going to get him they've got a hundred yards to go it will be a one-two for willie

28:05bullens but which way will it go it is captain cody who wins the scottish national

28:20it was just the most goat-wrenching feeling because i just felt up to that point

28:25i've won the scottish national and when he came by me my heart sunk

28:34unbelievable i've never won a scottish national before

28:38never won any national to take one of those off my cv was pretty incredible

28:44thank you i like it but you're not getting a kiss to be first and second way better than we ever

28:53thought thank you thank you wow wow wow we're in with a great show and um delighted person

29:01like it was just extraordinary it's um what a feeling this was massive for willie a one-two

29:09in the scottish national he is right on skelton's tail there's just two weeks left of the season

29:21and dan skelton now only leads willie mullins by around 16 000 pounds wasn't ideal for us willie was

29:30first and second a bit of deja vu um yeah the show goes on thank you very much we're still slightly

29:38ahead which is a very different position to what we were in last year we were well behind

29:42after the scottish gram national last year so we'll just keep fighting that's all we can do

30:00here look at this that's probably the first picture of us two with a racehorse

30:06what year was that 17th the 10th 93 93. there's been plenty of adversity in our lives

30:15it may look like it's silver spoons and gold medals but i can tell you it's been a long way

30:20from that in reality that was it granddad's hat yeah that was handsome one night i'd obviously been

30:26sent to the barber with that hairstyle terrible haircut yeah i think i'm much better now hey yeah

30:31shut up mama just probably chopped it off to some scissors

30:39i think i was five and harry was barely one mum and dad got divorced and we went and lived with mum

30:44her mother had a very long battle i suppose with alcohol

30:58and you know i was only young and and dam you know could see a lot more what was going on and

31:05i was very lucky that you know i had him it was hugely corrosive

31:19you know i recognized pretty quickly that i had to look after harry i had to

31:25notice things and spot things it wasn't very easy

31:28in the end we got too much for mum and we just couldn't all live together

31:40and we ended up moving back with dad and that wasn't straightforward because

31:44dad was away competing all the time and things weren't straightforward

31:53i'm five years older than harry so yeah i did have to grow up quicker and i looked after harry

31:57for a lot of his youth really you know i've got him to thank for a lot and i think now that's

32:05probably what what makes us so close all we've known really yeah we're lucky we got each other

32:11i wouldn't want to ride for anyone else there's nothing like riding a winner for your brother

32:18i just love putting you on them just seems so easy maybe i'm spoiled but i am spoiled i know that

32:23our spirit was always to fight and that's probably ultimately what led us to being competitors

32:30if it didn't go well you've got to keep scrapping

32:36we won't give up no chance

32:51this is it who will win the trainers championship will it be willie munans like last year

32:59or will it be a first title for dan skelp

33:03what a lovely day to win never give up

33:06what else we're going to fight don't worry about that script is not written yet

33:23we've got this far we've got to just keep focused try and get this job done

33:27for the past few weeks can only be described as a positive campaign from both sides willie

33:34mullins and dan skelton's team have been going the length and breadth of the country picking up bits

33:39and bobs of prize money here and there

33:43looking at the leaderboard willie mullins now leads the trainers championship but he's only two

33:46two thousand seven hundred and nine pounds ahead of dan skelton so going into the one grade one on the

33:52card the bet 365 celebration chase is quite clearly going down to the wire

33:56the bet 365 celebration chase the grade one of the afternoon 175 000 pounds up for grabs

34:07a grade one like this with so much pressure on you need to have done all your homework

34:16i'm definitely proud to be a mullins it probably brings that added pressure but for a sportsman

34:22pressure is what you want

34:36she's a trainer but she probably produces like more young horses and she'll pre-train some horses as well

34:45both of my parents were champion jockey tony mullins and champion lady rider margaret mullins so

34:57i'm probably an underachiever for my pedigree i haven't fulfilled my potential yet but hopefully

35:05i can start to fill into the booths it's a great family to be a part of

35:10she's back to say hello she's on a tour of the yard hi danny morning how are you newt patrick

35:17when the national has really brought the championship alive dan skelton he's had a great year hasn't he

35:24i think willie has to make it count on the big days so there's pressure on

35:32growing up in a hugely successful racing family you take it for granted by the time you start to compete

35:39and have a go you soon realize this is not easy your surname isn't going to carry you to get results so

35:46you have to put in the hard graft you have to make it happen yourself

35:51if the willie mullins horse can win this race it would be the seal of the deal in the championship

36:05and bolstering willie's chances further still his number one jockey paul townen is back from injury and

36:11ready to go it all comes down to this so we need to hit bullseye it's all or nothing today yeah

36:19okay gents you ready please willie mullins strong hand i think riding for my brother gives me

36:27more drive to succeed skeletons don't give up both dan and willie are desperate to win this but

36:35they've got to get past nikki henderson superstar jambon who is unbeaten around the track new

36:40rider for jambon to live is he in good form everything seems great he's been terrific

36:47jambon's the best two-miler in england it's a proper proper race we'd love to win it again

36:55jambon is a hot favorite it's the king of sand down here he comes jambon five out of five at sand

37:04down two celebration chases looking for third today facing off against jambon dan skelton has two

37:11horses but harper's brook is 125 to one long shot the better of his horses is unexpected party ridden

37:19by his brother harry going into the race you're hoping that unexpected party can outrun himself

37:27and maybe something might go wrong with favorite yeah hoping for prize money here's an ergamine

37:35in ergamine he's won two champion chases he's getting a bit older we've met jambon in ascot

37:44earlier in the year he's kicked our butt it's going to be happy jambon

37:50elete tom making his return after a year off the track elete tom coming into this race

37:57he's definitely going to be one of the outsiders

38:02for willie to be placed and get some valuable money here is the biggest expectation

38:09hopefully push it towards winning the championship

38:16lining up we know how difficult this race is going to be

38:20the party might end here for the skeleton the start could be important here oh that was an anxious moment

38:28energamine is a bit excited on their fall town and it's a false start this is knife-edge stuff

38:34the worst thing you can do is panic have to breathe keep it all together

38:42not what i wanted on illiter tom i'm trying to keep them relaxed start a bit more square on lads the

38:48starts are so important for any race don't go into that rail i'll go all the way out here

38:55everyone's getting a little bit worked up the occasion gets to everyone a little bit

38:59and they're off and racing and john bonn has jumped away perfectly okay

39:08i get a good start john bonn's in front where he likes to be john bonn out in the lead

39:16we're in a good rhythm jumping but we're just hanging on to john bonn's coattails

39:22we're needing him to make a mistake rather than us going to to take the race off him

39:29yeah we settle down passing the stands we're in a good rhythm elete tom is behind us so far so good

39:38so it's john bonn climbing the hill

39:43willie has told me to try and get as much prize money as i can

39:48don't be getting too involved in the early part of the race
