00:01Before I was a captain, in the 60s and 70s, my father and other industry pioneers caught over 300 million pounds of cane and bared-eye crab, from Atka all the way to Attu, and down the Aleutian chain.
00:17The western grounds were the most productive in American fishing history.
00:22Then the crab disappeared.
00:27But everything's changed.
00:30This is how the fleet and my old man convinced me to head back west, where it all began.
00:54Well, we're back in Dutch Harbor. We are getting ready for the red king crab season.
00:59Now, this is the second year it's been open in a row. And the quotas are bigger. We're up by about a half a million pounds. We're up over 260% for bared-eye for the tanner crab season.
01:12And Apilio are back. So, I mean, everything's moving. All the pistons are running in the engine right now.
01:19There was a video going around of some big king crab that guys were getting out west.
01:25Look at that thing. Look at that thing. Dude, these are some fatties. That's crazy.
01:31These guys were fishing cod, with cod pots out west. Now, whether it was just one pot that they filmed, or many, I don't know.
01:38But the reality is, I mean, guys haven't been out west for decades.
01:45You know, you're talking about the past here. And I mean, back then, yes, it was amazing.
01:51There was millions made out there. But, you're talking about today. And that's history. I mean, there is just an enormous...
02:01I do. Now what?
02:19I've been looking all over for you. You're driving me crazy.
02:23Well, just the boat's right around the corner.
02:25I'm trying to tell you. I'm trying to tell him to meet me at the boat.
02:29Then he tells me, hit the boat. Now, hit that car.
02:32Watch out, old man.
02:34Jonathan!
02:44How many grandbabies you got now?
02:46I mean, are you catching me? I got seven.
02:49You can't catch me. My grandkids are like rabbits.
02:51I didn't know we were competing about grandbabies.
02:53You gotta catch me. Yeah, I'm competing. How many you got?
02:56Number four, five months ago.
02:58Number four, see.
02:59It's kind of fun, though.
03:00Aren't they the best?
03:01They would have to change diapers, and they stink, and they cry.
03:03It's broke. It's broken. Here, take it.
03:05It's so fun.
03:07Oh, yeah.
03:09But anyway.
03:10So where are you going to go fish this year?
03:12I know it's not in your DNA to give up numbers.
03:17I'm thinking of traditional grounds east.
03:19It's on the other side of the ridge, but that's what I was thinking.
03:22I think that there's still big crab right around that edge.
03:25Out west. I'm talking way out here.
03:30There's a big biomass.
03:32These are going to be big crab, a couple pounds heavier.
03:37It's a long way to go.
03:39If you got 100,000 pounds, and it's $25 a pound, that's $2.5 million, dude.
03:44That'll get bomb up there in the pair of shoes.
03:47You're serious. I know you're...
03:50I'm going whether you go or not, but I would just love to have you with me.
03:53I don't trust anybody else, you know?
03:55You're looking at 150, 200,000 square miles. You know that, right?
03:59Yeah, yeah.
04:00And I'm just saying, if you miss, dude, you're starting over.
04:04I could cover the area twice as fast.
04:10I want to go, but I don't want to take the risk.
04:17Well, thanks.
04:19Okay, buddy.
04:20Worst case scenario, reach out on the radio.
04:22And keep working on them grandkids, you know?
04:26Good Lord.
04:27Jonathan wants to go out west and give it a try.
04:30And it's a long journey.
04:32And when you do that, it's an expensive journey.
04:35Justifying that kind of risk is, right now, not worth it for me.
04:40SIG is a third-generation fisherman, and I can trust him.
04:49If you have two boats, you have twice as many pots.
04:51You can cover twice as much ground.
04:53It's a risk, but we could have, like, some of the biggest crab we've seen in years.
04:58But this is going to be me.
05:01Just the bandits.
05:03I mean, there's tens of thousands of dollars just in fuel.
05:08And then if you strike out, it's the time.
05:11And the time is what's important here.
05:13You've got to come back, and you're starting from ground zero.
05:15Why would you take a chance like that?
05:17No, it doesn't pencil out.
05:20It doesn't pencil out.
05:21Hey, get off, get off!
05:47Get off, get off, get off, get off, get off!
05:50Get off, come on!
05:52Go, go, go, go, go, go, go!
05:55Get off, get off!
05:57Everybody?
06:02Yo, Max!
06:03That's what all you are on, man!
06:05Max!
06:20you guys are gonna have to start doing some cardio what's going on what's uh what's up
06:29we drilled roger that was about 55 seconds for everybody to get up here
06:37yeah i was in a good dream a good dream's gonna turn into a badger real quick
06:43you ain't up here in 20 seconds yeah we got two and a half three day steam out west
06:50yeah if everybody's sleeping which is gonna happen yeah it's usually when something happens
06:58if there's a fire it's not gonna take but a minute for this boat to sink
07:05i just want you guys to be ready yes sir good i appreciate all of you all right
07:15it's 2024 it's my second year on the titan explorer
07:20last year i spent a lot of time uh trying to prove to the owners that i was worth
07:28you know what they hired but now i want more what i have to do to buy this boat is i have to
07:36make enough money to get a portion of it but i haven't fished way out west for king crab like
07:46the rest of these veterans and when you're 450 miles out at sea the coast guard can't get to
07:54you in time if you run into trouble when you come up here to guarantee the fish the risk
08:03verse reward is really high you have to be able to take care of every possible situation
08:10i mean i experienced that last year with tyler for that fire
08:15hey guys i got smoke in the mouth smoke in the mouth
08:21holy fuck
08:22holy
08:24guys we got some more eyes for us all right
08:27boats are made with enclosed spaces with a lot of flammable things you know whether it's wood
08:35insulation blueies lines everything burns if you can't get to it to contain it
08:41it can just take out the entire boat
08:44the fire started moving an electrical short and then it torched off these
08:54paint cans so it's literally like bombs going off in the bow
08:59do we have a head count i need to know who is on deck
09:03where's tyler
09:04and then when we started counting heads we found out that one of our guys is down there
09:10tyler tyler
09:12unfortunately tyler was down there on his belly on the bottom of that tank
09:16he could see where the fire was coming from we couldn't
09:20and you know tyler had the presence of mind to shut that emergency hatch down there between the four peak
09:26and the storage line
09:28he trapped himself inside that hatch
09:31but tyler on deck there's tyler down right now
09:33and you don't know if he's alive or dead
09:39you can hear him screaming from down there get ready to pull that hat
09:51you better have a plan when you go west
09:53if you have a mistake
09:55serious fire
09:56it's gonna be 18 hours before you might even have a helicopter
10:03all you can do is focus on the problem
10:05we got him
10:07get him inside
10:11the fire couldn't spread into the gear room
10:17if that fire spread into the gear room
10:20this boat wouldn't be here right now
10:23he's alright
10:31alright thanks
10:32after all that adrenaline
10:43after you know everything's secure
10:45you know your crew is safe
10:47nobody has any major injuries or anything wrong with them
10:52then your body breaks down
10:54your mind breaks down
10:56the emotions start coming out
10:59because of the realization of what could have happened
11:02I just about lost my best friend's son
11:09my best friend is Kurt Frankenberg
11:14Tyler Frankenberg was a kid that was trapped down there in that smoke
11:18you know
11:19Tyler's like a son to me
11:21he has been since he was born
11:23and
11:25his family
11:27you know his grandma
11:29was basically my surrogate mom
11:32when I was a child
11:32you have to call
11:35the best man at your wedding
11:37a friend of 50 years
11:39and tell him that
11:40his son's not coming home
11:44how do you live with something like that
11:47you know
11:50I don't want to think about it anymore man
11:52I just I don't
11:53I don't want to relive it
11:55I don't want to tell you
12:17It should be right here.
12:39There she is.
12:43It's unlocked.
12:45It's unlocked.
12:50Really?
12:57How's it going?
13:00Okay.
13:03Good trip?
13:04Not bad.
13:06How about babies?
13:07Okay.
13:08Everything good at home?
13:10The kids are doing great, but I stood at that gate for a while.
13:13I almost didn't get on the plane.
13:16The faster you catch the crab, the faster you go home.
13:18The faster you go home.
13:20Are you almost ready?
13:22We've still got to get everything ready as far as the pots, the gear, the bait and all that good stuff.
13:28We picked an area?
13:32Yeah.
13:34And I think if we stay close to town, I think it's going to be a big payoff.
13:40Well, I mean, I'm sure you've read the survey, right?
13:46We can always look at it if you want.
13:51Got everything?
13:52Yep.
13:53Let's go.
13:53Go.
14:05This is the one that we got this year.
14:07Everything out here in the regular grounds, all dark, which means east is a safer bet.
14:19I see all these dark spots here out to the west.
14:21This is density.
14:24This is density, large size.
14:26Just saying.
14:27But this is...
14:28That's a...
14:29You are right.
14:30There's life.
14:30But we don't know specific depths, if there is any, um...
14:37It's a needle in a haystack.
14:38That's the problem.
14:40You understand?
14:41But they're bigger crap.
14:44Yes, but...
14:45Just think about it.
14:49I appreciate Manny's ambition, and that's what it's all about when you're a fisherman.
14:54That being said, uh...
14:57She really doesn't know what she's asking for, you know?
15:00You know, last year, uh, Keith had an incident, and it just goes to show how when you're alone
15:08and you're out there in the middle of nowhere, someone gets hurt, it can be a very scary place
15:14to be.
15:21I don't remember what happened.
15:23I remember being on the floor.
15:30Are you all right?
15:43Bro!
15:45Are you all right?
15:49Hey, bro.
15:49And then, you know, I came to, and I...
16:01Just...
16:03My left side was numb.
16:05You're kidding.
16:06You're what?
16:08You're kidding.
16:09I haven't watched
16:11that footage.
16:14I don't want to see myself that weak.
16:18I don't want to see myself
16:20not being in control.
16:23U.S. Coast Guard, uh...
16:25Sector in Anchorage.
16:27Fishing vessel wizard?
16:28We've had, uh, some sort of an episode on board here.
16:34It's my brother.
16:35His name is Keith.
16:36His left arm was going numb.
16:39At this point, my concern is that he possibly had a...
16:44possibly a mini-stroke.
16:47Maybe I was afraid that I was human.
16:50Maybe I was afraid that I wasn't bulletproof.
16:51Maybe the realization that...
16:54I was heading out on a plane or helicopter.
16:59That I was not going to be going back out with the wizard to fish.
17:09I don't...
17:10Monty was a hero that day.
17:25He got his brother to town.
17:36You know, Monty and I fight a lot.
17:39We're brothers.
17:39He was really stressed out, yelling and screaming and mad.
17:43And he's kind of rotten to me, but...
17:46We'll go get past that.
17:48He's his older brother, I guess.
17:52Monty and I are only a year apart.
17:55We've been fighting since we're kids.
17:57We've also been fighting for each other since we're kids.
18:02There's nobody else on this planet that I wouldn't go to...
18:05go to war with than my brother.
18:09The reality is, had he been far from shore,
18:13who knows what would have happened.
18:16He was close to shore.
18:18That's probably what saved his life.
18:20So, how far away you are being on your own,
18:24it's part of the equation.
18:25We're going to head farthest west we've ever been.
18:33We're going to head farthest west we've ever been.
18:46I hope that it's all going to work out.
18:48We get on the motherland, so...
18:50Yeah.
18:51See how it rolls.
18:52Pretty excited, you know.
18:54We've got some big boys out there.
18:58Let's go ahead and cut it loose, guys.
19:01Woo-hoo!
19:01Go on fishing.
19:03Go on fishing, baby!
19:03Go on fishing, baby!
19:06Go on fishing, baby!
19:07Go on fishing, baby!
19:08Go on fishing, baby!
19:08Go on fishing, baby!
19:15Our ADAC crew starts right here in Dutch Harbor.
19:19To go out west, it seems a lot to me, you know.
19:23I can't stop the tank, but this is the same route
19:26my granddad, Ernest Clyde Schubert, took in World War II.
19:30Bought the Japanese.
19:31A lot of people don't know it.
19:36Right after Pearl Harbor was bombed,
19:38Dutch Harbor was also bombed.
19:42The United States had a guy named Colonel Kastner,
19:45and he got scouts from all over the United States and Alaska,
19:50guys that could live off the land,
19:52guys that could go unnoticed and like ghosts, invisible.
19:55They were called to cutthroats, Kastner's cutthroats,
19:57and instrumental in stopping the Japanese
19:59from coming up the Aleutian chain.
20:01My granddad, Ernest Clyde Schubert,
20:04was a cutthroat.
20:06And they called him Schubert.
20:09Glad that those guys fought for us,
20:10so we have freedom today.
20:12Because of him,
20:13we're here.
20:16It could be the smartest thing I've ever done,
20:18it could be the stupidest thing I've ever done,
20:20but that's the way we live.
20:21Get Neil out of here!
20:32Wait, hey, smoke, smoke!
20:34Neil!
20:35Neil!

21:14bay freezer was on fire fire is out Roger thanks Russell thank you keep me
21:28posted that's my scariest thing is your bow cuts fired we're all asleep traveling and
21:35you wouldn't have seen the smoke you're dead man these wires look like they melt
21:41it right here and hopefully they didn't short nothing out inside the box and this
21:46was just happened to be in the way this made a lot of smoke I don't know what
21:51kind of damage we have I didn't know if I can get it working again
21:58you got another breaker we're gonna have to friggin do some rewiring it's all
22:03melting so it's gonna be a while hopefully we can fix it on the way after a screw
22:08thank you Neil
22:16we got to be able to fix that we need our bait bruiser we lose our bait we're
22:22aft aft tango uniform gets up
22:47you
22:52right now we're doing the coast guard inspection
22:59yes it's not expired service date take a look at your epurb i can't go out without it there you go
23:08perfect they're trying to make sure that when we go out there we all come back alive can we grab
23:18your stability book and take a look at it um felipe it's a skinny yellow book i'm gonna
23:25review some stuff with you so i feel comfortable that your life raft and your training ramp are
23:35hooked up correctly did we get any any weights on the pot yet so 835 832 778 11 suits are good okay
23:44i think we're looking good jake um something changes something comes up or you got a question
23:49about anything you can always reach out to us all right be safe crossing the dock most dangerous place
23:54hey there lovely lady hey yo how's it going got the coast guard inspection done we're good with the
24:10state we're good with the feds we just need a little bit more gear to be rigged and we'll be ready
24:16ready to go out west
24:17um yeah well i mean i know you know what you're doing but
24:30you know we just we're barely a year out from everything that happened with the saga
24:36i'm just trying to do the best i can do to provide for us and it seems like the best
24:49option to grow the empire and to find a boat
24:55because this is your literally your wheelhouse it just sounds like a big risk it just feels like a lot
25:03i'm just kind of worried about wanting to talk to you
25:06okay all right i love you love you too okay bye bye
25:13i know it's expensive to go all the way out there if i don't make money
25:25all those decisions impact everything that happens back home
25:30my kids my wife and a year ago i lost everything
25:36the doors change
25:48i was standing in the back of my own wheelhouse and i couldn't get in
26:02and i didn't know why because the amount of money that i put into the saga was enough to buy it twice
26:09and that was
26:12what's the deal
26:17there's leans on the boat
26:19the bank they said nobody's allowed on it
26:23they own the boat i don't know how
26:26i just feel like such a fool
26:29lenny the worst partner i've ever had in my entire life
26:36i mean did you not pay his bills what happened
26:39i still don't know what what happened because all i've gotten was an empty telephone
26:45i'm still in a lawsuit paying lawyers to figure out when i'm gonna get my money back
26:54i'm going to uh get some of my stuff now and oh it's sad
27:01this is a salvage mission
27:03this is
27:10this is hard
27:12i got
27:19uh because i didn't just lose my boat i also lost my crew which was my family
27:24i remember loading stuff off big 450 a big dirt bike
27:31and i was trying to tow the totes because my four wheelers didn't work
27:44i remember i dumped it
27:46like i fell on it
27:48and then my crew pulled up in the truck
28:04and i remember asking him you know do you think you can help me
28:08come on
28:10you know i remember i said can you help me
28:16and he said you know i can't i gotta i gotta go
28:21crew members on another boat and i was just like
28:24kidding me dude
28:28unless you've been homeless before and left by society
28:44you wouldn't understand what it's like to be left by your own people
28:48it's one of the hardest things a human being can go through
28:52and only very few know it
28:55stripped of all my money and title
28:58i'll never forget that night
29:00that night was brutal
29:02losing the saga it really dropped me down a peg
29:09it's like going from being a captain
29:12to a deckhand
29:13but you know i really do respect jenna as a partner in my business
29:20and if she thinks something's too risky
29:24a lot of the time she's right
29:26i've earned respect
29:30as a captain on the titan
29:32but if i go all the way out west
29:35and fail
29:36i will get fired
29:38every decision that i make impacts my family
29:42and i don't want to lose everything
29:45again
29:46well here we are
30:07this is the greatest thing in the island
30:08we're way out west
30:12way way west
30:12but uh
30:16we got a breaker problem
30:17it's a breaker for the bait freezer
30:20this is the most important thing on the boat for crab fish
30:23it keeps all of our bait
30:24not frozen
30:25we don't have frozen bait
30:26we use the bait as fast as we can
30:28try to catch as much crab as we can
30:29until it got rotten
30:31then
30:31pretty much have to go to town
30:33pretty nasty within three days
30:35we're a long ways from home
30:38great second island
30:43it was a key location in world war ii
30:46it's one of the major refueling stations
30:49you can still see a lot of structures here
30:52i can see
30:55quonset huts
30:56and bunkers and stuff
30:58oh yeah
30:59this is definitely a remnant of what they call the forgotten war
31:04you know when the japanese took over the aleutian islands
31:09the cutthroats actually traveled to atu in a submarine from dutch arbor
31:13my granddad
31:15ernest klein schubert
31:16he was actually one of the kids that was dropped off on the islands
31:20and they actually held off the japanese for a couple days
31:24while our military snuck around the back of the island and came in through the back
31:27i think 5 000 japanese died in those 18 days
31:34cutthroats and colonel castor actually won the war
31:38in the illusion chain
