00:00You're one ride away from being paralyzed.
00:05You get a fall, you still want to ride in the next race.
00:09Last season we had a trainer's title that went right down to the final day.
00:13That is so, so close.
00:16This season we're set for the most extraordinary, unpredictable drama.
00:20That is insane!
00:22The David Power Jockey's Cup is the most valuable jockey's challenge in the world.
00:27Half a million pounds to the winner.
00:30It's going to be very hard to win.
00:31Those lads are so hungry for it.
00:35Specs surprises.
00:38And now the conclusion of the Red National.
00:40A clash of the titans.
00:42Main games are started.
00:43We all get a bit emotional.
00:46It's highly charged stuff.
00:48The competition is going to be hotter than ever.
00:51On a day's racing, anything can happen.
00:53I'm going to turn it right up.
01:00Boxing Day, as we know, it's one of the great sporting days of the year in Britain and Ireland.
01:16But the focus is here at Kempton.
01:19For Jumps Race fans, this is Christmas.
01:23Gifts galore in our grade ones this afternoon.
01:26Big day ahead, isn't it, Lewis?
01:28Oh, yeah.
01:29Boxing Day is a big day for jockeys.
01:32Big day for racing.
01:33A lot of rides.
01:34Gat boy!
01:35Kempton's always a good buzz.
01:36It's always the place you want to be on Boxing Day.
01:40It's just a massive day in the racing calendar.
01:42Phil, have you got another one of those hangars?
01:45God, you're all right, maintenance, are you?
01:46Today is Box Office, with a Christmas clash to savour.
01:54Constitution Hill is back in action this afternoon.
01:57The Christmas hurdle's a big deal this year.
02:00The comeback for Constitution Hill has been so long awaited.
02:05It hasn't been seen for a year.
02:07Constitution Hill, as he did 12 months ago, comes home to win the Christmas hurdle.
02:13Constitution Hill is the poster boy of jump racing.
02:18Constitution Hill remains unbeaten over hurdles.
02:21He's our horse of a generation.
02:24Bribery.
02:26Gets you everywhere.
02:30He's a very, very talented horse.
02:33He's just so straightforward.
02:37Well, the little monkey knows I've got them in my pocket.
02:40Stop being a pest.
02:42You are funny.
02:43You're too clever by half.
02:45We actually didn't think he was very good at all to start with.
02:49Only because he was so laid back, he didn't want to show us where the button was that you press.
02:56And it's very simple, once you've found it.
02:59Come on.
03:00He's a real friendly person.
03:05He's lovely.
03:07Are we feeling nervous today, Nick?
03:09Incredibly nervous, yeah.
03:10Yeah.
03:10Yeah.
03:13Constitution Hill is a joy to work with.
03:16He can take your breath away every single day with his ability.
03:20And what he is capable of is an awful lot more than most horses.
03:25I think if you asked every jockey in the way around, they would want to ride Constitution Hill.
03:28The partnership between Nicky Henderson and Nicko Du Boisneville has been a hugely successful one, and it's resulted in Nicko riding more Grade 1 winners than any other current British jumps jockey.
03:55Nicko, we'll start with you.
03:58He is a Mr. Cool, and he's just very good on the big day.
04:01It doesn't rattle him.
04:03All OK?
04:04I don't think any part of being a jockey is straightforward.
04:08All OK?
04:09All OK?
04:11Looking back on it, it was really difficult to get noticed.
04:14All right?
04:16Yeah.
04:16OK?
04:17OK?
04:17Like all youngsters, you probably feel like you're being overlooked, and I guess I was very frustrated.
04:25I was riding a lot of very good horses in the mornings, but not being used in the afternoons.
04:31OK, stop that.
04:33Whoa.
04:34And I felt that I wasn't going anywhere.
04:39Knock on the office door on a Sunday morning, and Nicko said,
04:43I'm out.
04:44This isn't working.
04:46OK, yeah.
04:47I handed my notice in, and it didn't go down very well.
04:52Um...
04:53I said, well, that's a pity.
04:56Because I've just spent most of the morning getting you the ride in Petit Robin next Saturday.
05:02So we had a chat.
05:03He said, I think you'll really regret it.
05:06And we decided that we're going to continue.
05:09Petit Robin has just taken it up now.
05:11Nicko de Boisville with a second vantage.
05:13And it's not surprisingly, he won.
05:16A weekend never to forget.
05:18Brameter rider, Nico de Boisville.
05:20It was quite a pivotal moment.
05:24The relationship between the jockey and the trainer's got to be strong.
05:27There's a lot of trust involved each way.
05:29All right.
05:37And that's as soft as it's been up there for a good while.
05:39OK.
05:41My relationship with Nicky Henderson is long established now.
05:45I've been at Seven Barriers for over half my lifetime.
05:48It definitely feels like my second family.
05:50Do we want to do that early again?
05:51Well, I'm not going to take a hundred horses up.
05:54I'll look down to the racket.
05:55Yeah.
05:56Yeah.
05:56I've been very, very lucky with our jockeys.
05:58It's been quite a short list over a long period of time.
06:02Yeah, but do we want to do the good ones early and then we can swap on to the winter?
06:05Could you?
06:05Yeah, but...
06:06Because it's getting light.
06:07Glad we've got the back of the hill.
06:08All right, yeah.
06:09And we've all been terrific friends.
06:12Nicko is one of the top boys at the moment.
06:14There's no doubt about that.
06:15I'm going to take these babies up in the back of the hill now.
06:17OK.
06:18When I've heard about breakfast.
06:20Yeah.
06:21I like to think he looks out for me and I look out for him.
06:25What are the standouts for Nicky Ensen, of course, being six times champion trainer?
06:29That's a nice one to have on your CV.
06:3173 Cheltenham Festival winners.
06:33That crazy daisy come on your left and you come on the left of crazy daisy.
06:38He loves his horses.
06:41He absolutely loves his horses.
06:44But Constitution Hill, I think, is one of the biggest challenges
06:48throughout his career.
06:56The first half of the season, we were flying.
07:00Easy peasy.
07:01And then all of a sudden, boom.
07:06Something gets in here.
07:07We don't know what it was.
07:09It's really been likened to a cold.
07:17Just like a cloud came over the whole thing for a fortnight.
07:21Last season, Nicky Henderson was dealt a huge blow
07:24when a mystery virus spread through his yard, affecting all of his horses.
07:28It was a huge news story at the time and also devastating for the sport.
07:36We had a terrible Cheltenham Festival where we ended up just withdrawing everything
07:43just because the horses weren't right.
07:45Horrible.
07:47You have the horses that are good enough to win and you can't run them.
07:51Last year was devastating, man.
07:55Absolutely devastating.
07:57I mean, shocking.
07:58Nobody ever found out what it was,
08:00but my horse was the only one that got this really savage lung infection.
08:04Disappointing news for racing fans
08:06because defending champion hurdle winner,
08:08Constitution Hill,
08:09is out of next week's Cheltenham Festival due to illness.
08:13We have a problem.
08:14He has just been scoped.
08:15There was some mucus.
08:18As you can imagine, it's a bit of a shock.
08:22Yes.
08:23OK.
08:23We'll watch this space.
08:24Nicky, best of luck.
08:29Constitution Hill.
08:30He had a lung issue.
08:31He had a colic.
08:33He had a lameness after this.
08:35He was in hospital for five or six days.
08:38There's so many question marks over Constitution Hill.
08:41He really was in a life-threatening situation.
08:44So to come back from that, as good as he was,
08:49we just don't know.
09:00Constitution Hill on this side.
09:06What the governor's looking for
09:08is to check the Constitution Hill is moving well.
09:12You're looking for that little anomaly.
09:13That's probably the most important piece of work
09:16that we have done in the last two years.
09:18It's a lot of pressure on everyone involved.
09:22He's a very important horse.
09:24That's why you're not allowed to say anything.
09:26You've got one whisper of that.
09:27That'll be the headline of every newspaper in the country.
09:29You've just got to be incredibly patient.
09:36And you start running horses when they're wrong.
09:38Then you'll do an awful lot of damage.
09:39What do you think?
09:44He wasn't quite paying attention with another one in front of him.
09:46No.
09:48Nico knows the horse well enough
09:50to be able to tell very early on
09:52there is something wrong.
09:53I need to get out of here quickly
09:55before any damage is done.
09:57It is the only thing that matters.
10:00The horse and the jockey.
10:02They're the two people you're putting at risk on any day.
10:12Constitution Hill looks big and good.
10:15Yep.
10:15After all his problems and all the talk,
10:18he is back.
10:19Constitution Hill.
10:21In the paddock here at Kempton,
10:23this place absolutely buzzing.
10:25And look who's right behind him.
10:27The mare Lossiemouth, so good
10:29that she has come to take him on.
10:33Happy?
10:34Well done.
10:35She's ready to go.
10:36Lossiemouth's a lovely mare.
10:38She's a very calm horse.
10:39Kind of takes it all in her stride.
10:41Moves beautifully.
10:43I think all those sort of things,
10:44plus her natural ability,
10:45make her special.
10:51OK.
10:55Do too big today.
10:59Noss Moon.
11:00Too big.
11:02Racing has been my life,
11:04though I've all been competitive.
11:06You know, if we have a good day in Constitution,
11:08Hill has a bad day, of course.
11:10He's beatable.
11:11You can't be afraid of one horse.
11:13On a day's racing,
11:14anything can happen.
11:16Perfect.
11:16Just walk down this way.
11:18The concerning things that Nicky Henderson
11:20is that Willie Mullins isn't scared
11:23of Constitution Hill.
11:24People used to run their horses
11:26away from Constitution Hill
11:27because they knew they couldn't get him.
11:28Now they're coming to take him.
11:30That'll do fine.
11:32Willie Mullins is an incredibly dominant force.
11:36He's dominated Irish racing
11:38and, of course, the Cheltenham Festival.
11:41We're lucky enough
11:42that we have horses in Claude Sutton
11:44to compete at the top level of jump racing.
11:48Lossy Mouth is absolutely phenomenal.
11:54In the closing stages,
11:56a second festival victory.
11:58Lossy Mouth and Paul Townend
12:00have won the Close Brothers.
12:02She's only been beaten once.
12:04She's run ten times
12:05and she's just kept building and building.
12:10There's that whole bit of colour
12:11with Rich Richie.
12:12He's an amazing owner.
12:13And he brings a sort of wonderful madness
12:18and passion and excitement
12:21to her story.
12:24Everything pushes you towards Lossy Mouth.
12:26She's got the Willie Mullins factor.
12:28She's got those famous Rich Richie colours on.
12:31And she's got Paul Townend.
12:33Oh, right.
12:39Lossy Mouth, Constitution Hill.
12:41How do you see it going?
12:44I don't see much.
12:48You hold that there.
12:50And it's I am Maximus
12:52and Paul Townend
12:53for an Irish national.
12:56Paul Townend won virtually
12:58every big race last season.
13:00He was six times champion jockey in Ireland,
13:02four gold cups,
13:03one grand national.
13:04Yeah, an amazing CV.
13:07Paul and Oliver seemed to have
13:08that little bit something special.
13:10Was able to read a race,
13:12knows where the winning post is.
13:13That's a huge asset in a jockey.
13:17I actually haven't ridden
13:18over hurdles here before,
13:19but I've had a walk around it,
13:21watched plenty of videos
13:22and done all the homework we can
13:23and thinking is done now.
13:25It's time to do the business.
13:26What crap are you talking?
13:28Paul Townend is a class act.
13:30There's no other word for it.
13:32He is a fantastic jockey.
13:34Who's going to follow who?
13:35Oh.
13:39That's all you're going to get.
13:40There you go.
13:40Yeah.
13:41That's all you need to know.
13:42We're so competitive.
13:44We literally want to win
13:45every race, every day.
13:47I'll predict it, shall I?
13:49Go on then.
13:49Paul will follow Nick.
13:50Yeah, I'd say you're right.
13:51We want to win
13:52as much as we can
13:54and on the biggest stage possible.
13:56Mind games have started.
13:57The ice man is melting.
14:01Yeah.
14:13Kenton is always buzzy
14:15at Christmas.
14:17You know, everyone's eating too much
14:19and they want to get out,
14:20but also they want to enjoy great sport
14:23and they're never disappointed.
14:26Nico, did you get the gout again
14:27this Christmas or was it just last week?
14:29What did you get gout from, Deutsche?
14:30I think over-indulgence.
14:32Yeah.
14:32Expensive food, expensive taste.
14:34Yeah.
14:35Personally, Christmas Day is a tricky one
14:38because I know that in the next couple of days
14:39I've got some really big sort of rides coming up.
14:42Chris, they're not working.
14:43Probably because you're too fat.
14:45I guess you have your weight
14:47in the back of your head
14:48and you don't want to fully let yourself go.
14:50Every jockey from lunchtime
14:53when they have their Christmas dinner
14:54starts thinking about Stephens' Day
14:56or Boxing Day.
14:58What did you have?
14:59All the trimmings, everything.
15:01And then took laxatives.
15:05Constitution Hill and Lossie Mouth
15:08for the Christmas hurdle.
15:09It really is a coin flip.
15:11Constitution Hill is at the top of the market
15:13for reputation alone.
15:15We've not seen him,
15:16so we can't judge him
15:17on what he's done on the racetrack.
15:18All we can do is trust in Nicky Henderson
15:20that the horse of training
15:22has been good enough.
15:24Constitution Hill, no.
15:26Impossible?
15:27I think it's impossible
15:28to beat something like Lossie Mouth
15:30the way things stand today.
15:33So Paddy Brennan and myself,
15:35we have a bit of a love-hate relationship.
15:38If Constitution wins the Christmas hurdle,
15:40I'm taking you into London.
15:42Fancy bars, fancy lunch.
15:44They say Constitution Hill won't turn up.
15:48He's going to be destroyed by Lossie Mouth.
15:50They say that he should probably be retired.
15:53Probably that I should retire as well.
15:55Nope.
15:56And what do you think to that?
15:58Well, I know what I'd like to say,
16:00but, uh...
16:02I got told off last time
16:03for swearing on camera
16:04and I'm not going to do it.
16:05Feeling good?
16:10As long as he's feeling good,
16:11you don't want to worry about how I'm feeling.
16:14That won't help the situation.
16:17There were an awful lot of voices
16:18saying we'll never see him again
16:19and this and that and the other.
16:21We're pretty hardened to that.
16:25After 40-something years,
16:27you get pretty used to listening to
16:29a load of rubbish, to be honest with you.
16:32Hiya, Paul.
16:36What do you hear?
16:36What do you say?
16:37You all right?
16:37Merry Christmas.
16:38You OK?
16:39Good.
16:39Here we go.
16:41What do you reckon?
16:43It's not gone.
16:44It is.
16:46Is she as good as we think she is?
16:48Well, it's time for the talking to stop
16:50and the horse to show us what he's capable of.
16:54Nicky, just how nervous are you?
16:56Well, we are.
16:57Yeah, of course we are.
16:58But luckily, he's the one that matters.
17:00I don't think he's in good shape.
17:03Whenever Constitution Hill runs,
17:04all eyes are watching.
17:06To do this without a run since this time last year
17:09is bound to be hard work.
17:10So, here we go.
17:12I am looking forward to getting back on him
17:13and seeing if he retains all his old ability
17:16and his old spark.
17:17Good luck.
17:18Thanks, Matt.
17:19You're not confident.
17:21Somebody says, are you confident about this?
17:23No, I'm hopeful.
17:25And you cannot be more than that
17:26on any given race.
17:28The lot can happen.
17:33Tactics have been done.
17:34The horse has been prepped.
17:35I'm only a spectator from there on, really.
17:38All your work's done.
17:39Yeah.
17:40And all we can do.
17:45I met Nicky in the early 1980s.
17:49He's a dear friend
17:50and we've had a lot of bad days
17:53and sad days.
17:55I had a very good horse
17:57called the Proclamation
17:58who was killed at Ascot.
18:01I remember getting a letter from him
18:03talking about how sad it was
18:04and it was all splodgy
18:05because of the teardrops on it.
18:07And, um...
18:08that's him.
18:12I'm always hoping he wins
18:14because I love the guy.
18:19After his brilliant wins
18:21came a wind of colic
18:22lame earlier this season.
18:25What next for this star hurdler?
18:27We're about to find out.
18:29I'm very determined
18:30to win this for the governor.
18:32He's putting his reputation
18:33on the line.
18:35There's an expectation
18:35for the horse to run well
18:38and show his old self.
18:41Can you imagine
18:42having a heartmaster
18:43on Nick or the wine book?
18:44But I am a bit worried
18:46about Lossy Mouth.
18:47Full town and they're
18:48motionless on the mare.
18:50There's an expectation
18:51comes with riding for Willie
18:52that every horse
18:53is supposed to win.
18:55That probably brings
18:56the pressure with it.
18:57But once that's channeled
18:58in the right direction
18:59it can be an edge.
19:02Let's talk about
19:03Burdette Road.
19:03Could you get a freebie
19:04on the front?
19:04I'm on Burdette Road
19:05who was third favourite
19:07for the race.
19:08Going into the race
19:09it was a showdown
19:10between Constitution Hill
19:11and Lossy Mouth.
19:13This is the stuff
19:14that really gets your heart
19:16going that couple beats faster.
19:19I get very, very, very nervous
19:21before the race.
19:22I don't watch the races.
19:24I'd rather just listen
19:25and sort of be in my own world.
19:27It's just my little habit now
19:28I suppose.
19:29Come home safe.
19:31Thanks Ben.
19:32Well done.
19:33Fantastic.
19:34And they're off.
19:36Lap of Christmas hurdle
19:37a quality field of four
19:38break away Burdette Road
19:40quickly into the lead
19:41and Harry Copton
19:42immediately looks behind
19:43to see Constitution Hill
19:44heading up the chase.
19:46That start
19:46or the only way
19:47that we could beat
19:48these two horses
19:49was to get out
19:50over the first
19:51and get a bit of a lead.
19:52Constitution Hill
19:54he's never been beaten.
19:55If there was any
19:56chunk in his armour
19:57it'd be first time out
19:58after a long lay off.
20:00Open the lead Burdette Road
20:01from Constitution Hill.
20:03When you're in a race
20:04it's a very
20:05insulated world
20:06from the outside.
20:08It's just you
20:09and the horse
20:10working as one.
20:11You can hear the horses breathing.
20:12Astrophys were very attuned
20:15to a horse's breathing
20:16because it's really important
20:17to know how they're going
20:19and if there's a problem
20:19in that breathing.
20:21Was it the old
20:22Constitution Hill?
20:24There's a proper gallop
20:25isn't there?
20:27It's more fun
20:28when you're involved
20:28in a big clash
20:29to heavyweights
20:30taking each other on
20:31tactics come into it.
20:33It's amazing
20:34and it is addictive.
20:35It's like playing chess
20:37at thousand miles an hour.
20:42So quick.
20:44Crikey.
20:46Lossie Mouth
20:46is just closing now.
20:48I knew I had to get
20:49in a rhythm.
20:51Rhythm is very important
20:52in a race
20:52and you just want
20:54to position yourself
20:54in the place
20:55that's going to give you
20:56the best possible chance.
20:58Lossie Mouth
20:58has now got to within
20:59a length and a half
21:01of her chief market rival.
21:03Full Townend
21:04and Lossie Mouth
21:05are very close on my tail.
21:07I know that they have
21:08good finishing speed
21:09and they're able
21:10to stay really well
21:11so I have to be on my guard.
21:12I thought we went
21:15a really good gallop
21:16but our hills jumped great
21:18but obviously
21:19Constitution Hill
21:22seventh gear kicked in.
21:26Constitution Hill
21:27pulls out.
21:28Lossie Mouth tries
21:29to get on his tail
21:30on the runs
21:30at the second last.
21:31Still Bird Air Road leads.
21:33Constitution Hill
21:34draws alongside.
21:35I decided with the governor
21:36that going to two out
21:37I was going to take it out.
21:38The crying rise
21:39for Constitution Hill.
21:41Constitution Hill took off.
21:44Lossie Mouth digging in
21:46trying to launch a challenge
21:47trying to expose
21:48any weakness
21:49in Constitution Hill.
21:54Going to the last hurdle
21:55he took a big blow
21:57which in
21:58layman's terms
21:59means he's
22:00inhaled and exhaled
22:01which
22:01is a
22:02lack of fitness.
22:03Could this be
22:06that we've left him short?
22:09It's a worry
22:10because it might give Paul
22:11a bit of room
22:12to get into the race.
22:15By the time we get to the last
22:17I catch up
22:18hoping Lossie Mouth
22:20would come alive
22:20and the engine
22:21will really rev up.
22:24But we're not catching him.
22:25The final fight
22:27in the Christmas hurdle
22:28Constitution Hill
22:29of Estates
22:30by 5th Road
22:31Lossie Mouth
22:32hasn't been able
22:33to get close enough
22:34and Constitution Hill
22:36will land a third
22:37Christmas hurdle
22:38and see Dr. Mayor
22:39always going to
22:40strive better
22:41Nico Des Moines
22:42middle for Michael Buckley
22:43and Nicky Henderson.
22:47We all
22:47as everybody knows
22:48get a bit emotional.
22:50Those big days are.
22:51Well done.
22:54Well done.
22:57It's highly charged stuff
22:59and yeah
23:00it gets to you.
23:03Well done.
23:03Well done.
23:04Well done.
23:05Well done.
23:05Well done.
23:07Well done.
23:08Well done.
23:19It's why we do it.
23:21Nico
23:21it's a very simple question.
23:24How did the boy feel?
23:25He felt fantastic.
23:27And what do we say
23:28about Nicky?
23:29He did it with
23:29Sprinter Sakura.
23:31He's done it again.
23:32I think all the credit
23:33has to be taken
23:33to the Governor.
23:35That is some
23:35training for us.
23:36We're back.
23:38It's been a long time
23:38coming but
23:39it was definitely
23:40worth the wait.
23:41And one more thing.
23:43Paddy Brennan
23:43you can shove that
23:44where the sun don't shine.
23:50Stopped.
23:52Stopped.
23:53Oh well.
23:54Back to the drawing board.
23:55Ran a good race.
23:56He's home and safe.
23:57It's alright.
23:58Stopped.
23:58There's definitely
24:06a feeling of relief
24:07for the boss
24:08because I know
24:09what he has to suffer
24:10and people
24:11question him
24:12all the time.
24:13Ten pounds
24:14better than that
24:14Governor.
24:16It's nice that
24:17he was vindicated.
24:18The old fool
24:20eh?
24:21Worth all that
24:21trouble
24:22wouldn't it
24:22eh?
24:23Right.
24:24If he can
24:25come out of the season
24:26with his record
24:27intact
24:28that would give me
24:29such pleasure
24:30you wouldn't know.
24:31I'm going to be the
24:34happiest bunny in this
24:35land.
24:38Well done.
24:38Constitution Hill
24:46he's back
24:47and he's the
24:48first ever
24:49three times winner
24:50of a labyrinth
24:51Christmas hurdle.
24:53Constitution Hill
24:54beats Blossyville.
24:55I'm disappointed
25:04but this sport
25:06moves so fast.
25:09It's a tough game
25:10you do lose
25:11more than you win.
25:13You just have to
25:14move on to the next one.
25:18A jockey's day
25:19can be so hectic
25:20they might be riding
25:22in six, seven races
25:23a day.
25:26If a football player
25:27has a bad match
25:28he has days
25:29to get over that
25:30whereas a jockey
25:30has 25 minutes
25:32I think that takes
25:34such mental strength.
25:37You wouldn't be human
25:38if you didn't feel
25:39the pressure
25:39and the stress
25:40that comes with it.
25:42You have to
25:43grab hold of yourself
25:44and give yourself
25:45a shake.
25:46It can get on top
25:47of you if you let it.
25:49We've still got
25:55the big race
25:56to come this afternoon
25:57the highlight
25:58of Christmas.
26:00A race that promises
26:01so much today
26:02in this King George.
26:04King George
26:05fabulous race.
26:06Good luck, kid.
26:07In racing terms
26:09the King George
26:09is right up there
26:11as the top
26:12two or three races
26:13in the racing year.
26:14Exciting stuff today
26:15I must say.
26:18For Kempton
26:19the King George
26:20is their biggest
26:20jumps race.
26:21The race has so much
26:22history.
26:24It's so career defining.
26:26Prize money wise
26:26148 grand
26:28what's not to like.
26:29The King George
26:30this is the one.
26:33It's a race.
26:33Everyone wants to win.
26:34You want to be
26:35part of it
26:35but part of it
26:36is only so good.
26:37You want to win it.
26:48I think in life
26:49everyone has to
26:50make sacrifices
26:51to follow their career.
26:54Our careers
26:55are so short
26:56that you have
26:57to give it 100%.
26:58If you don't
26:59you're fooling yourself
27:00and you're not
27:01going to get there.
27:03Paul, you're having
27:04a magnificent season.
27:06What number
27:06of winners
27:07for the season
27:07is that for you now?
27:08I think that's
27:09my 31st about that.
27:10I left school
27:11at 15
27:12and moved
27:13to William Mullins
27:14to start an apprenticeship.
27:16Paul Townen
27:16and the men
27:16of the moment
27:17riding a quick
27:17double here.
27:18Paul, did it impressively?
27:20Yeah, he's not
27:21a long person.
27:22Living home
27:23at that age
27:23is difficult.
27:25Paul,
27:26you know,
27:27he'd be quiet.
27:28Not that he's shy
27:28but he'd be quiet.
27:31There was a couple
27:31of weeks
27:32of homesick
27:33and things.
27:34I was naive
27:35to the whole thing.
27:36You start so young
27:36you start riding
27:37a few winners
27:38and you think
27:39it's easy.
27:41It's not.
27:42He came,
27:43obviously,
27:43he's a very good
27:44pony race rider
27:44so a big reputation
27:45but he couldn't
27:46ride a winner for us.
27:48I remember
27:49really kind of thinking
27:50jeez,
27:50is this fella
27:51just not lucky?
27:52And then suddenly
27:53he had a winner for us
27:54and...
27:55And it's that man
27:56again,
27:56Paul Townen.
27:57We meet yet again.
27:58You're having
27:58a marvellous day.
28:01It's hard to get
28:01to the top
28:02of any sport.
28:03There's so many
28:04jockeys
28:04fighting for
28:05a handful of rides.
28:08It's that man
28:08of the moment,
28:09the Tony Mackay
28:10here of Grange
28:11Board of Inters
28:11afternoon,
28:12Paul Townen.
28:13To get there
28:14is hard
28:14and it's hard
28:14to stay there too.
28:16Paul,
28:16I've lost count.
28:18How many is that?
28:19That's four out of that.
28:20It's a results-based
28:21sport and
28:22if you're not
28:23giving results
28:23you're on the
28:25chopping block,
28:25you know?
28:28Here's Gallop
28:28and the Champs'
28:29gold cups.
28:31Oh gosh,
28:32they're heavy,
28:32aren't they?
28:34So this is what
28:35you drink your
28:35morning coffee out of?
28:37Yeah.
28:37Just to remind yourself?
28:38Yeah,
28:38only four days a week
28:40of coffee.
28:42Paul Townend
28:43is bidding
28:44to make an
28:45extraordinary bit
28:46of history
28:46when it comes
28:47to jump racing.
28:48I could do it
28:48clean.
28:49He's got that
28:52gold cup
28:52in the bag.
28:53He's got the
28:53champion hurdle
28:54in the bag
28:55with state man
28:55for Grand National.
28:57The entry
28:58to Grand National.
28:59This one's pretty cool.
29:01Imagine if in a
29:02calendar year
29:03he also wins
29:04the King George.
29:06I mean,
29:06that really would
29:07go down in the
29:08history books
29:08as something that
29:10I don't think
29:10we'll see done again
29:11for a very long time.
29:13It looks lonely
29:14there, doesn't it?
29:14I'll get another one.
29:16As jockeys,
29:17we're probably
29:17too competitive
29:18sometimes.
29:19We like winning
29:20and the game's
29:21all about winning.
29:22If you could
29:23bottle the feeling
29:24we get,
29:25the adrenaline
29:25high we get,
29:27you'd be very,
29:27very rich.
29:29When jockeys
29:30retire,
29:31they say they'll
29:32never replicate
29:32the adrenaline
29:33rush they get
29:34from riding horses.
29:37To someone
29:37that hasn't
29:38experienced it,
29:39it's very hard
29:40to explain.
29:44Hewitt
29:45won in third place.
29:46He's crossing
29:47fast on the
29:48front two.
29:49Oh my God,
29:49a brave man's
29:50game,
29:50but Hewitt on
29:51the outside
29:52is delivering
29:53a challenge
29:53and Hewitt
29:54right three
29:55out of,
29:56running last
29:57to first,
29:58seizes the
29:58King George,
29:59a damaged
30:00year.
30:00Yeah,
30:03last year just,
30:04that was unreal
30:05to tell you
30:06the truth,
30:06I never felt
30:07like I was
30:07in the race,
30:08I never felt
30:09competitive.
30:11That's what
30:11he talks about.
30:12I've
30:12Hewitt all
30:13the time,
30:13so boring.
30:15He keeps
30:16going around
30:16telling everyone
30:16it costed 800
30:17quid,
30:18was it?
30:18I don't know,
30:19but it didn't
30:20really matter,
30:20did it?
30:21Ah,
30:21when I seen you
30:22lying on the ground,
30:23waving up,
30:24and bye,
30:25Gav.
30:25Paul Townend
30:28has never won
30:29a King George
30:30before,
30:30it's one of the
30:31few races
30:31that isn't on
30:32his resume,
30:33but it won't
30:34be easy,
30:35feeling great.
30:37Standing in his
30:38way is the
30:38reigning champion
30:39Gavin Sheehan,
30:40he's on board
30:41the real whacker,
30:42don't forget the
30:43champion from
30:43two years ago,
30:44Harry Comden,
30:45he's on board
30:46Brave Man's
30:47Game.
30:48Big field this
30:48year,
30:49biggest field
30:50since 2009,
30:5111 runners,
30:52bit of French
30:53spice in there,
30:54just great to see
30:55such a strong
30:55representation,
30:56we haven't had
30:57a French runner
30:57since 2005.
31:05I'm 25 years old
31:07and I'm a racehorse
31:08trainer based in
31:09France.
31:15Our yard is in
31:16Chantilly,
31:17just north of
31:18Paris.
31:20We have 80
31:21horses now,
31:22it's an amazing
31:23training centre,
31:24it's a dream to be
31:26training there.
31:28It's an unbelievable
31:28facility.
31:31Noel George
31:32decided to go to
31:33France, he thought
31:34there were better
31:35opportunities for him
31:36out there.
31:37Noel's a young
31:37trainer coming through
31:38but with Amanda's
31:40at home he's teamed
31:41up with a big
31:41experienced team.
31:44He's starting out in
31:45France but the prize
31:46money is so much
31:46better but you could
31:47argue the quality of
31:48racing may not be the
31:49same.
31:51I think many people
31:52are looking at
31:53Noel as can he
31:56build a better
31:56training career than
31:57his father Tom did
31:58being based out in
32:00France whilst Tom
32:00was based in
32:01England.
32:01That's
32:05general chef.
32:06He's third in the
32:07French gold cup.
32:10My father's name's
32:11Tom George.
32:13He's been a very
32:14successful racehorse
32:16trainer.
32:20He's had just under
32:211,000 winners.
32:23My grandfather had
32:241,000 winners.
32:25Grandfather had, on
32:27mum's side, had 18
32:28champion festival
32:29winners.
32:34Obviously coming from
32:35a successful racing
32:37family, everyone
32:38thinks you're handed
32:40everything on a plate.
32:46Sad lad.
32:49But when I first
32:50moved to France, I
32:52didn't speak a word
32:53of French.
32:54I had to learn
32:55French.
32:56I had to learn
32:56how to set up a
32:57business in France.
32:59It was a leap of
33:02faith.
33:04I don't want to be
33:06known as Tom
33:07George's son.
33:09I admire him and I
33:11also try and think to
33:13myself I want to do
33:14better.
33:15I'm very young and
33:16ambitious.
33:17You've got to try and
33:19top what family have
33:20previously achieved.
33:24When are they
33:25travelling?
33:25Over.
33:26Christmas Eve.
33:27They look ready in
33:28here.
33:28Yeah.
33:30Generals flying and
33:32Né Le Francais.
33:37Né Le Francais is a
33:39superstar in France.
33:42His name makes him
33:43very popular.
33:45Obviously his name
33:46means he is French
33:47in French.
33:48If you were going to ask
33:51someone to do a painting
33:52of a horse it would
33:53probably be him.
33:56He's a horse who on his
33:57A game is virtually
33:59unbeatable.
34:00He's not camera shy.
34:01I think a lot of jockeys would
34:09envy me in riding him.
34:10Very well balanced and he's
34:13got a big engine and a big
34:14heart.
34:15He's so kind, gentle.
34:20I just said he was kind.
34:23He's biting me.
34:24James Reeveley who rides
34:26Il Le Francais, English guy,
34:28has been three times French
34:29champion jockey and three times
34:31winner of the Grand Stipe de Paris
34:33which is like, I suppose it's
34:35France's gold cup.
34:36Beautiful horse.
34:38James' style is tailor-made for
34:40Il Le Francais.
34:42He makes good horses look even
34:44better.
34:45After?
34:46Yeah.
34:46Ready to go?
34:47France is obviously where we're
34:52based but to win in England is
34:54where my heart wants to win
34:56really.
35:05So this is the Landbrooks King
35:07George VI Chaser grade one
35:08contest over three miles headed by
35:10number one Banbridge Balltown in
35:12Rides.
35:13We'll talk about Banbridge since
35:14he's here beside us.
35:16The Joseph O'Brien team.
35:17It's a question of his stamina
35:18because his form over hurdles
35:20over this trip hasn't been the
35:21best.
35:23Willie Mullins decided not to run
35:25any of his horses in the King
35:26George which now means that
35:28Paul Townend is free to ride
35:30for other trainers which can be
35:33a disadvantage because he doesn't
35:35know the horses as well.
35:42Banbridge, he was running a
35:43huge race in Cork.
35:45Unfortunately he gets rid of
35:47Richie.
35:49Look you man wins his third
35:50hill away for Paul Townend and
35:52Willie Ballons.
35:53A little bit disappointing to be
35:54honest.
35:57Banbridge trained by Joseph O'Brien
35:59is a horseshoe but it's not in
36:01perfect conditions.
36:01He can really spit the dummy out and
36:03run a bad race.
36:04He needs everything to go right and
36:06to put him into a new environment
36:08like the King George, the helter-skelter
36:09of a King George, it makes it very
36:12challenging.
36:13Mick, Brave Man's Game, the 2022
36:15winner.
36:16Yeah, he came close last year, got
36:17hampered later on.
36:19Last year was probably one of the
36:21hardest days racing I've ever had.
36:23I've finished second and I don't
36:25think I've ever walked out of a
36:26race course feeling so deflated.
36:28It's the King George is the race
36:29everyone wants to win.
36:31The real wackered Paddy Neville,
36:32the trainer in great form.
36:33Gavin Sheehan won the race last
36:35year.
36:36A jockey hasn't won back-to-back King
36:38George's on different horses since
36:391979.
36:40I was very lucky last year to win
36:42the race.
36:43If I had the same luck again this
36:44year, then brilliant, but it's a
36:45very hard race to win.
36:47What a sight that is as they peel
36:48off and make their way to the
36:50start.
36:51Watch on the steps.
36:52What?
36:53Watch on the steps.
36:54We're not travelling across the
36:56channel with our horses just to
36:59come and take part.
37:00We are coming to win.
37:02James reckon there's going to be
37:02many taking him off?
37:06Yeah.
37:09A lot of people are going to be
37:14afraid of Lille-Francais in the
37:15King George because he sets a
37:17pace that a lot of horses find
37:19hard to follow.
37:20Turn around guys.
37:21Turn left-handed.
37:23From the time you get to the
37:24start, it is a game of chess.
37:26Being aware of what's around you
37:28and that's where your homework
37:30comes into it as well.
37:32The flag is up ahead of racing's
37:34Christmas highlight.
37:35Keep it steady lads.
37:36We'll go first time.
37:39And they're off and racing.
37:42Crowd giving a send-off to the
37:43Ladbrokes King George.
37:44The sixth chase the real
37:45whacker wide out.
37:47When you're out in the King
37:49George, you just get that good
37:52feel.
37:53It's not too often.
37:54You get to ride in the big
37:55races and the buzz is different.
37:58It's very special.
37:59It's a thrill.
38:01Bambridge is right out the back as
38:03he steps up to three miles.
38:04We kind of had a plan in our
38:07heads to get away smart, but we
38:10ran into a little bit of traffic
38:11problems and that just put us a
38:13place or two further back.
38:14Now let Ron say, you're going to
38:16see exactly what you get on the
38:17tin, Ruby.
38:18He's getting it pretty easy, isn't
38:19he?
38:20It's going to be fast and furious.
38:21The tempo of the race is so hot that
38:23with the French horse going so fast,
38:26if we were to match him, we weren't
38:27sure to stay.
38:28Braveman's game in third place.
38:30When we go and ride those big
38:32races, everyone rides a bit tighter.
38:34No one gave us anyone an inch.
38:35It's just so competitive.
38:37Ilay-Francais, there's no doubt
38:39that he's taking a few of these
38:40outside their comfort zone.
38:42Seems to have got the leads.
38:44He likes it, that.
38:47After the third fence, I have a
38:49little look in behind.
38:50Quite surprised to see that we're so
38:52far ahead already in this race.
38:54So Ilay-Francais seems to be getting
38:55a mid-race breather.
38:56It's quite an extraordinary feeling
39:00being out there on your own.
39:02There's no noise, just the wind
39:03and the noise of your horse galloping.
39:08It's quite a nice feeling because,
39:10you know, you can give your horse
39:10a breather and it means you're putting
39:12the others under a lot of pressure.
39:20They're all well grouped in behind.
39:22Someone's going to lead to lead
39:23the chase, though.
39:24It's a cat and mouse.
39:28Who's going to go after him first?
39:31No one wants to be the guinea pig
39:33or the one that sacrifices himself,
39:36do the hard work and drag the rest
39:38of the field in.
39:41Ilay-Francais is six lengths
39:42in front of me.
39:44I'm just thinking about myself, really.
39:47I kind of pulled off a bit of a miracle
39:48last year and hoping that I'd do
39:50the same again this year.
39:51James is going a nice, even gallop in front
39:55on Ilay-Francais and trying to get
39:57a little bit closer.
39:59I'm not under serious pressure,
40:01but we've got to pump the ante.
40:05We're trying to get everything
40:06gently, gently and momentum up.
40:09Get it all as gradual as I could
40:12for one last, last part.
40:14Banbridge is making good ground
40:16around the outside.
40:17Red cat.
40:18It's going to take a monster of an effort.
40:20Will Ilay-Francais hold together?
40:22That's the fourth rim home
40:32and Ilay-Francais
40:33simply soared over it.
40:36Ilay-Francais is the one
40:38they've got to take back.
40:39His lead has opened up again
40:41to ten length.
40:42Go on, boy.
40:45Grew up going to the King George
40:46with Dad.
40:48Go on, wing it, please.
40:50I first went to when I was
40:53ten years old.
40:56Dad running in it nearly every year.
40:59Never won it.
41:00He was second in it a couple of times.
41:03Banbridge is picking up
41:04from a long way back in four.
41:06I do have pressure to prove
41:08that I can do the same.
41:10Ilay-Francais by six length.
41:13But if we could win,
41:14that would be amazing.
41:16Go on, James!
41:18Banbridge in second
41:19and now he is in hot
41:20and persistent pursuit
41:22of Ilay-Francais.
41:24When I look behind,
41:25I see him a long way clear
41:26and I think,
41:27keep up this momentum,
41:29jump to the last fence as well
41:30and it's in the bag.
41:33But in between two out
41:34and the last,
41:34my horse is tying up
41:35underneath me.
41:36Banbridge is beginning to close.
41:38Getting a little bit worried.
41:42Banbridge is four lengths down
41:43but it's the enemy danger.
41:47I started to run out of petrol.
41:51Running on empty.
41:55Praying that the line would come
41:56sooner rather than later.
42:01One more fence to jump.
42:02James is still
42:15a long way ahead
42:16turning in.
42:19He was keeping it up
42:20relentlessly.
42:23It wasn't until we were
42:24a long way up the straight
42:25that he did start to tire.
42:26The distress signals
42:31were coming from the horse
42:32in front of me.
42:34We're building up momentum.
42:37My horse has got his eyes
42:38on the horse in front.
42:40He can feel the horse in front
42:41coming back to him
42:42a little bit
42:43and that's giving my horse
42:44confidence.
42:46But I just can't panic.
42:48Breathe.
42:49Keep it all together.
42:55James sits up
42:56and doesn't get a good
42:57stride the last.
42:59It's not a long way
43:00from the last to the line.
43:05It's game on.
43:07Elé Froncet
43:08jumping in so good
43:09doesn't see a stride
43:10at the last
43:11and Banbridge does.
43:12He pounces on the
43:13front trader
43:14and Banbridge
43:15dribbling to the front
43:16has stolen the King
43:18giant
43:18with a better jump
43:19at the last.
43:20Holt howling
43:21mugs Elé Froncet.
43:23It was brilliant.
43:24Massive atmosphere
43:25in Kempton.
43:26A lot of happy people.
43:27That's your ball.
43:29Oh well done boy.
43:31Well done boy.
43:32Right place,
43:32right time.
43:33Managed to get on
43:34a King George winner.
43:36Brilliant.
43:38It's a race
43:38I'll always be able
43:39to say I've won.
43:42Fantastic jockey.
43:43It was unbelievable
43:43for him to win
43:44those full races
43:45in a calendar year.
43:47Incredible achievement.
43:48Yeah,
43:48one of the greats.
43:49That's cool, yeah?
43:50Yeah.
43:52You've won
43:53pretty much
43:53for everything.
43:54What else
43:55is there to achieve?
43:59To win a mile again.
44:04Yeah,
44:04we were very close
44:09and it was gutting
44:10to have got beat.
44:11We'll win it next year.
44:12What?
44:13Win it next year.
44:14Probably compose myself
44:17after getting beat
44:18a bit better
44:18being next to dad.
44:21He knows
44:22what it feels like
44:23to be beaten
44:24which helps.
44:26He knows
44:26kind of what emotion
44:27you're going through
44:28which is
44:29huge.
44:30You question
44:40whether that was
44:41your chance
44:41gone.
44:42I know obviously
44:43I'm young
44:43so I'd like to have
44:44a lot more chances
44:45but you still do
44:46question whether
44:47that was your chance
44:48gone.
44:51When do you get
44:57in second place?
44:59First loser.
45:00What do you think
45:02it's a matter of fact?
45:03It's where dreams
45:03can be made
45:04and hearts
45:06can be broken.
45:08There's no debate
45:09in the South
45:10for more successful
45:11to completely
45:12not a divide.
45:14I'm missing everything.
45:15Finance,
45:16marriage,
45:17my own health.
45:18The Southern jockeys
45:19are definitely
45:20a little bit more Hollywood.
45:21Well, they think
45:21they're Hollywood.
45:23They'd probably see
45:23it as easy pickings.
45:25Harry Skelton
45:26is not going to
45:26deprive me
45:27of half a million quid.
45:30the Southern jockeys
