00:00Hello again, how are you?
00:02It's nice and cozy, aren't you?
00:03Oh my god, it's nice to see a friendly face.
00:04I know you as well.
00:05Oh, we're doing the European kiss.
00:06I don't know why I do that.
00:07So European of us.
00:08Oh my god.
00:09You look gorgeous, I love you.
00:10Thank you, so are you.
00:11No, I'm not.
00:12It's like, I don't know what day it is about LFF.
00:14You know how it is.
00:15I don't know what day it is, period.
00:18Listen, you're amazing in this.
00:20What a gear shift from playing clothes.
00:22I mean...
00:23That's the last thing we spoke about, right?
00:24Oh, yes.
00:25Your character is literally a maniac.
00:28I mean, I know that, as an actor, you're not supposed to judge your character.
00:31But you must have been side-eyeing him a little bit.
00:33I mean, yeah, a little bit.
00:34When I first read the script, I obviously judged him.
00:37But then very quickly, in order to play him and empathise with him,
00:40you have to stop judging and start loving him.
00:44And so I had to, like, learn to love this maniac,
00:47who kind of is like a wild animal in a cage.
00:51I actually weirdly found it easy to love him,
00:53even though he's problematic.
00:55Yeah.
00:56But he's charming, you know?
00:58He's a charming maniac.
01:00I know, I know.
01:01That's the problem, Drew.
01:02Yeah, yeah.
01:03In a way, is it kind of...
01:05I don't want to say fun, because that's not the right word,
01:07but in a way, is it, like, cool to tap into those dark hearts?
01:10Do you know what I mean?
01:11Yeah, it is.
01:12It's kind of messed up to call it fun, but it is.
01:16You're so messed up.
01:17No, sorry. Sorry!
01:18No, no, I've been saying the same thing.
01:20It is fun, because...
01:23Not because of the content or what he does.
01:26But I grew up with people like that, who are off the walls.
01:31You know, he's probably extremely ADHD.
01:34He's probably got some undiagnosed things going on.
01:37And hasn't had the support or the system behind him to, like, manage it.
01:42And he's also...
01:43The story we built for Dee is that he comes from a lot of trauma
01:46and a really messed up family life.
01:49And so that's what he's covering up.
01:50So it is fun to get to be loose and wild
01:53and very different to things I've done before,
01:55but also to try and empathise with that kind of person who is damaged.
01:59Absolutely. And obviously there's a rise in toxic masculinity at the moment.
02:04I mean, what was it like exploring all that side of things within this
02:07and the present setting as well?
02:09Yeah, I mean, I feel like a lot of the roles I do in some way or another
02:13are in conversation with what it means to be masculine
02:17and what masculinity actually looks like.
02:20And so I'm starting to...
02:23But then again, I think that's just like the nature of making art
02:26is that it's about people and so it's inherently socio-political
02:30no matter what it's about, you know?
02:32So, yeah, I'm glad to be making work that is hopefully entertaining
02:35and also shining a light on, like, the pros and cons
02:40of how masculinity is upheld and performed.
02:44Your work is so important, but am I right in saying
02:47after this you went and did a rom-com for a bit of light, right?
02:50Genuinely, I needed to. I did Plain Clothes and then this
02:53and then a film called Watch Dogs, which is coming out next year.
02:55who is even more problematic in many ways.
02:58And so, yeah, after those three characters that were a lot of trauma
03:01and pain, I needed to do something fun.
03:03And also I want to keep people guessing
03:05and not know what to expect next, you know?
03:08Okay, thank you so much. It's so nice to see you again.
03:10So nice to see you. Love to see you. Thank you.
