00:00Vroom! And I was like, dude, you're giving Prince Charming from Shrek 2.
00:05Guys, congratulations on this movie.
00:08I'm not a big comic book guy, so I went into this thinking,
00:12does the world need a clay-faced movie?
00:15And I came out thinking, what the hell do I need?
00:17Yes, thank God the world does have a clay-faced movie.
00:19It is wildly, screamingly entertaining.
00:22Yay.
00:23I wondered, did you guys ever have any doubts before or during about this process?
00:29Or did you just throw yourselves in enthusiastically?
00:32Are you kidding me?
00:33I mean, speaking of the both of us, we are both very big comic book fans.
00:38And I think I reveled in the fact that this was not just like a clay-faced origin story,
00:47but it was doing it with like a really strong genre.
00:50And I think that's something I want to see more of in the comic book movie space,
00:55is like allowing directors to really take control of the genre as well,
00:59and like switch it up and play around and be more experimental.
01:03So when I saw it, I was like, this is sick.
01:05This is so cool.
01:06And like, let's give it a go and like, see what happens.
01:09It's clear that they've given you guys, the whole creative team and the director,
01:13like a lot of kind of leeway.
01:15License, yeah.
01:15And that makes the films really exciting.
01:17You also know things could be a car crash when the studio just goes,
01:19you go and do it.
01:20It's where you get like your really, really good stuff as well.
01:23We've seen a whole bunch of kind of comic book side characters, shall we say.
01:28Yeah.
01:28Don't really sort of clay-faced.
01:29Yeah.
01:30Often kind of anti-hero types getting their own movie treatments in recent years.
01:33Often with, I'm going to say it, dreadful results.
01:37But why do you think this works?
01:40I've seen Madame Webbs several times.
01:44Why does this work?
01:46Yeah, yeah.
01:46I mean, I think I was excited about this film long before I was a part of it.
01:51When I heard about the project, I heard it was going to be James Watkins.
01:55I heard that it was going to be a clay-faced movie,
01:59a character that I think just inherently lends itself to this medium.
02:04You know, there's certain characters that fit into different spaces,
02:07but clay-faced is a very, it's very organic to the things that movies like.
02:11And I thought the idea that it was going to be a more contained movie,
02:15budgetarily, all of this stuff, I thought,
02:17boded very, very well for the film being something interesting and different.
02:23And so I think the fact that we get to be a part of it is just amazing.
02:28And then that Tom, you know, whose work I wasn't, like, super familiar with before this,
02:33and he just completely blew us away.
02:35I mean, his performance is incredible in the movie.
02:39He's going to be a huge star after this.
02:41And then also the leadership just on set.
02:44With James.
02:45Yeah, from the top down, just the environment that they created was really special,
02:50and we had an amazing time making this.
02:53I think there's, like, an element as well.
02:54This felt closer to home in terms of it feeling more like shooting in indie,
02:59even though it's, like, underneath the kind of, obviously, a huge studio.
03:02There was something really intimate about the everyday thing that actually, you know,
03:06I've done studio films that feel intimate too, but this felt really intimate and really playful.
03:12And I think the reason why this film works is because it has a sense of play.
03:16And it has a sense of not taking itself too seriously.
03:23And there's a sense of fun about it.
03:26Obviously, the film is, like, a horror, but there's, I think you would agree that it's weirdly fun,
03:30and people have fun watching it.
03:32Yeah.
03:32It's pure entertainment.
03:34Yeah, it's, like, I went in and knowing, I'm not usually a massive, I like some early Cronenberg,
03:38but not massive, like, into body horror.
03:40Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:40And I knew it was meant to be a bit scarier, and you've seen a million, like, superhero movies and
03:44things.
03:44But then it's, like, it's got the right amount of, like, wackiness.
03:47Yeah.
03:47Along with the really intense, like, brutality.
03:52And together, you just come out smiling.
03:55You feel like you can't.
03:56It's weird, isn't it?
03:56Yeah, you feel like you've taken joy in certain things, even though the end is, like, there's some brutal things
04:03that's quite hard at the end.
04:05Speaking of Tom, like, he's a very experienced actor, and he's been around for a little while,
04:09but you guys have kind of, I think it's fair to say, been involved in more larger, kind of, big
04:14-budget projects over the years.
04:16Was there a sense of kind of taking him under your wing, in a way, on this?
04:19Opposite, opposite for me.
04:20Like, literally the opposite.
04:21Yeah.
04:21I felt taken under his wing.
04:23I felt like he was the most incredible leader.
04:25I mean, one of the things that, like, people don't talk about a lot, but is the idea of being
04:29the number one on the call sheet.
04:30And you can work sometimes with number ones who are really, like, take a different role on in the production.
04:38And Tom was absolutely that guy, the tone that he set.
04:41And I felt, I just felt so grateful for that.
04:47He's an amazing actor, but also an amazing person.
04:50And it's so nice to see good guys win.
04:53Yeah.
04:53Incredible hair as well.
04:55Wonderful, dude.
04:56I'm so happy somebody talked about his hair.
04:58No one's mentioned it.
04:58I said to him yesterday, so he went, I can't remember why, we were at the screening.
05:03And someone was like, yeah.
05:05Someone was like, Tom, your hair is in your face.
05:07And he went, vroom.
05:08And I was like, dude, you're giving Prince Charming from Shrek 2.
05:13Like a L'Oreal advert.
05:14Yeah.
05:14And then I was like, you should just, like, do that and then, like, put some lip gloss on in
05:18your Prince Charming.
05:19It's all right for some.
05:20I think, mine was always like a kind of a bird's nest.
05:24So every time, I think, he's probably going to get his own, like, Instagram page at some point, I'd imagine.
05:30Finally, Max, I know you're a big DC fan as well.
05:32And you know Strange is getting behind the camera, Teen Spirit a few years ago.
05:36You made Shell your own, like, body horror just a couple of years.
05:39But I'd like to shout out your dad as well, who's, like, such a massive kind of inspiration to, like,
05:44film fans.
05:44I was talking to someone by chance about how much I love Truly Madly Deeply.
05:47Oh, that's so nice of you.
05:49And so many of these films that have kind of not only stood the test of time.
05:52Oh, bless you, mate.
05:52Impacts a lot of people.
05:53But as a fan of DC and being experienced behind the camera as well and seeing what's possible with this
05:59movie, have you thought about, like, what might be possible for yourself?
06:02Have you thought about a character in the DC world that you'd actually like to have a go at from
06:07a directorial perspective?
06:10That's a great question.
06:12I mean, look, I'm so excited to be part of this world.
06:15I would love to, you know, work in it again at some point.
06:20And my hope, honestly, I'm not trying to, like, dodge the question, but I really hope that Clayface I get
06:26to see again and that Caitlin I get to see again.
06:28Like, I fell in love with these characters at the end of the film.
06:33And I was just like, I can't wait to see what happens next with Matt.
06:36But which one would you pick?
06:38I felt so invested.
06:39I felt so invested in these people.
06:42So it would be maybe to get to work with those characters again, because I love them now.
06:46I'm really invested in them.
06:47I can't wait to see what happens next.
06:48My favourite kind of comparison or quote outside of this was Dr. Corbin described as a fringe scientist akin to
06:54Elizabeth Holmes.
06:55Which made me laugh.
06:56You could do a Nathan Felder style.
06:58Yeah, just like, living with her and exposing.
07:01I have nothing to hide.
07:02That would be great.
07:03Guys, really loved this movie.
07:05It's ridiculous and incredibly entertaining.
07:07The whole world, I'm sure they will, but the whole world kind of throws their weight behind it as well.
07:11It would be great to see more of it.
07:12Oh, thanks, Matt.
07:13Pleasure.
07:13Take care of yourselves.
07:15Have a good rest, darling.
07:15Have a good rest, darling.
